- In this video I cover 5 reasons why your Maytag/Whirlpool /Kenmore/Amana/ Admiral washing machine is stuck in the sensing mode and will not advance to the wash cycle. The video covers both the diagnostics and repair of the issues causing your machine to behave like this. The model in the video is a Maytag Centennial machine, however the concepts are applicable to any washing machine that has 6 lights followed by a pause play button. This video is also part of my series "Free on Facebook" in which I find things for free and show you how to repair, recycle, and repurpose them.

It is actually registering the amount of resistance/current draw it takes to turn the tub to determine the amount/weight of clothing in the tub to determine the amount of water to dispense and wash time. But a great video. I should have made videos for the 15 years I owned an appliance business but thankfully you are to help people.

Hi! mine won't go to diagnostic mode and stays only on sensing mode. I see two issues as per researched and videos related. The Shift actuator or control board. Please give me your feedback and ideas if I'm correct.

I have reset and recalibrated my Whirlpool. It works everytime but it only last a a load or two. What could that be since it does not seem to be a broken actuator or valves as it works well once recalibrated.?

Hi, my whirlpool washer , it start filling water later it's showing wash light green, and lid locked showin red, but it doesn't washing. What's the problem it now.
My Maytag washer MVWC6ESWW1 has an automatic water level control combined into the temperature control. I found water all over the floor once and when I looked inside it was only half full and could not see any water leaking anywhere. I tried it again and it didn't spill any water through the whole cycle I went through your 5 reasons for overflow, and it checked fine. When I blew air to the water level switch it did shut of the water valve but could not hear any click. I use the warm water wash and saw the hot and cold-water valves cycle off and on to make the warm water and worked fine. Could a water valve have a random sticking problem or is there something else to check or you think it's a random problem in the water level switch because it does not click?
My Whirlpool stuck in sensing mold if I select wash mold, but It draw water, spin and drain if I manually choose soak,Drain&spin molds.what’s my problem? The actuator?
I have a Whirlpool top loader washer and while washing, we tripped the breaker with 2 vacuum cleaners operating. The washer turns on, but there are no lights to indicate the cycle. The machine doesn't lock. Any help would be appreciated.
Can you tell us what noise if any it might make ...like no noise bad valves or no movement but water bad motor etc.
My Kenmore series 400 fills with water then agitates and begins to wash. It washes for a few seconds only to pause and fill with water again. It repeats these ateps and doesn't stop.
maytag 2000 series wont spin in normal wash but it has no problem on rinse and spin?

I have a Whirlpool that does all the cycles however at spin it spins ...all water is drained, you can hear the drum coming to an end but it goes back to spin and won't skip to Done. I already bought and installed new timer and it didn't fix problem. Any suggestions?

Hi you were one of the best with the most discriptive videos I’ve come across but I do have the exact same washer but mine stopped it’s cycles and the lid lock switch was locked when my daughter tried to take the clothes out my son told me when she told him he tried to open the lock by pushing the lock mechanism open but couldn’t get it so I don’t know if that also mess up the slide part of the lock I have not replaced that but the first thing I did replace was the switch lock which the light was blinking before I opened the back up to get the washer lid open after replacing the switch lock it didn’t seem to make a difference so I replaced the shift actuator and it still didn’t fix it. So I bought a new hub because another video said that it may be stripped and slipping underneath but when I got it off it didn’t look perfect so I bought another one but didn’t put it on yet because it didn’t look like the part/shaft under there was moving I did pull the motor and try to test the ohm resistance but it seemed to have good values according to another video I did return/exchange the first new switch lock and get another one put that in and still no luck. The lock does not lock still I hope you have an answer for me hopefully an easy and cheap one thanks
I've got a problem with my whirlpool Cabrio...i need help...it washes and everything...just when its doing the last spin and stops, it won't shut off on its own...if i dont remove the clothes, it will start all cycles al over again....is this normal???

My machine will spin up once but doesn't add any water. From there, it gets stuck. So does that mean the motor and rpm sensor is ok, and it would be valve or control panel?
How about the main locking switch being broken?
Whats going on if my washer while on sink will not switch to the wash cycle instead it spins my water out but will complete all the other cycles?

What if its stuck in sensing but the lock light doesnt come on at all. Also wheb I try to recalibrate it the start button seems to not be doing anything

I reset my Maytag Bravos, it seems to go through all of the cycles now, but there's a clicking during the wash and rinse cycles. No clicking during the spin and draining, assuming not a belt issue. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Great Video. Thank You. I have a Maytag that I changed Washer Drive Hub Kit. Instruction Sheet says I should Recalibrate Machine. I can not get it into that mode so I just ran washer and it is working. Any advice? Thank You Again.
Recalibration mode is the same as diagnostic mode, except you just keep going until the "rinse" light is lit up and hit play. Honestly, if you can't figure it out it's most likely okay. You really didn't replace any electronic components, so it shouldn't require a recalibration.
When did he hit the start button twice?
I replaced the shifter actuator its still doing the same thing.. i had a question, i made sure i matched the number on the one on amazon and they still sent me on with a different number seems to be exaclty the same. Will that cause it not to work? And also how do i recalibrate it?

All I did was tap with a screw driver at bottom everywhere and it work. Moved belt and it worked

I would definitely swap it with a different one. Unfortunately most of the other brands have there own issues as well (especially GE). I would try my luck with another WP

I have a whirlpool top load washer that is only 2 years old and the other day I noticed a screeching noise while the washer was on the spin cycle and now the washer will fill but it will not switch into the wash or spin cycle all it will do is sense and then after a few minutes the green lights go off and the washer drains but it does not wash them or spin them out. I am trying to determine the problem and I am not good and fixing appliances. Lol! Please help???
Screeching noise is a bit odd but you may want look at the clutch/shifter actuator
After changing out the shift actuator the sense error persisted. Changed out the water valves and now it's working just fine.

Ok I put the machine in test mode, and it was fine, then in Manual mode, everything fine, but when I tried to run it , the sensing light come on and it does nothing, I put a lid lock, Actuator, and cam,...nothing! Only work right when in test mode..must be a bad board 😢, so I'm I right? Oh the water valve work fine.

I replaced my shift actuator a few months ago and it worked fine. Now it is stuck in sensing mode again. I can hear clicking underneath. Is it possible it went out again? It won't even run the diagnostic
It quite possible it went out again. Perhaps try replacing it with an OEM part. Also make sure the clutch moves up and down freely
I performed the Diagnostic Mode on my Maytag washer (twice to be sure) and both times the only light flashing is the sensing light (all the way to the left) which is the “F” code. Since there are no other flashing lights, I’m trying to figure out what that finding indicates. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help!
Never mind… 🤣 Turns out that a road crew hit a water line so the water was turned off on our street! I have saved your video and will refer to it if/when my washer ever malfunctions. Thanks! 😊

My brand new whirlpool washer would not move past sensing mode. Customer Service gave me this trick: First cancel the load, then Press Start, Press it again and Hold 3 seconds. My machine then ran a wash cycle. Pretty ridiculous to have to do this, but it worked for me.

I got one a Kenmore thats stuck the washer will fill up with water and then stop after it fills then sits stuck in sensing i replaced the actuator the lid lock recalibrated it. Belt is good spins good when put on spin. Im lost on this on
Best thing to do at this point is put the machine into diagnostic mode then go into the error code mode and see what errors come up.
Mine doing same thing. Noticed drive motor to hot to touch ,spins freely, but never ran

Question for ya. We have a whirlpool that blinks sensing and the lid lock will lock but doesn’t move from there. Do you think it is the lid latch assembly if it’s locking or something else?
I would say if the lid lock mechanism locks and unlocks it is probably fine. Does it fill with water?

Same here, but mine fills with water. I can manually advance it thru modes by hitting the start/stop button
What would cause the shifter to break after one week? It will spin but the agitation mode is very weak.
Could the water level sensor not also be the problem?
On this particular type, the water level sensor is part of the control board. You can try replacing the water control level hose to see if that fixes the issue. That is my next step. I can put the machine in drain and spin, and the machine switches over to that mode. The tub spins, and the water drains out. But it will not switch out of the sensing mode.
What about machines that stay stuck on wash but doesnt spin or advance to the next step? Should I check the actuator for that issue too?
Most likely, it is the actuator, but it is impossible to tell without taking a look at it or putting it in diagnostic mode. Luckily, the actuator is cheap, and it may be worth it to just replace it and see what happens.

Yes try recalibration. It could be your clutch is stuck

@@fredc8618 there is a recalibration procedure in the tech sheet that is located in the front panel of your washer (it is a straight forward procedure). If you can not find a tech sheet I would search maytag washer recalibration on TH-cam.

I just had this problem too. Finally it started working after I held the start button for about 5 seconds. Then the lid locked and everything started working. Tricky little sensor but its making alot of noise.
My Maytag washes but will not move to next cycle. You can advance manually but that’s the only way , it stays in washing after it washes

My sensing light would not stop flashing, to do any of these suggestions.
Once i pressed the off/cancel button for 5 seconds, it stopped flashing and i could do the the reset.
My washer starts sending mode and moves to wash after wash it drains but stays on wash mode with blinking lights
Trying resetting it by pulling the plug and plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, try the recalibration procedure. I have a video of it on my channel.
Very informative but if my washer mother board is out i mind as well buy a new one. Just my preference
Yes sometimes that is the best choice!
Most used washers can sell for approx $200, and the part may cost $250.00. If you can't fix it with a low cost part it may be time to junk it.
I have a whirlpool like this that after going thru the diagnostic test process blinks sensing, washing and then done. I have tried to find what the heck that means but I am not seeing it anywhere. Any idea what it is????

Where is the part # on the ACTUATOR ?
There are really only two types of whirlpool actuators a red one and a black one. The back one is more common (part number W10913953). Both are available on Amazon

Moat is likely it's the magnetic clutch that is bad

Had this issue going on for at least 4 months. Somehow got the machine randomly running after taking off the water line & connecting back, works at times but couldn’t figure out how to get it running. This comment saved me a lot of headaches 😅

I miss the old school washers, heaven duty beasts, set it and walk away, no sensors! These are made cheap and to break...anything the government controls is crap.
Old ones would last decades. I still pick them up all the time! Some people love them!

Mine is stuck in sense mode. I tried running diagnostics and or recalibration but I cant get those to work, the manual says the washer must be un standby mode ... what is standby mode and how do I get it into standby? Thanks!
