Another terrific VLOG Matt, really enjoyed watching. The relaxed interview style seems to work well, very entertaining and terrific content, I do find that I come away from all of your VLOGS having learned (or having been reminded of) something I can take away and use. Please do keep them coming. With regard to Frankfurt all I can say is fair play to you for the sheer mental strength to overcome those issues and cross the line in such a great time. I found it truly inspirational, Thank you !
You passed me on the very last meters, but I couldn't care less. I was just totally happy to finally finish sub2:30. But thanks for the nice pictures of me ;-)
Ya, trying to find bottles on elite tables just never worked for me. I finally just used water stations and sewed soft velcro patches to outside of shorts and used sticky back velcro on gels. That way I could carry at least 5 and take half and then stick it back on.
Gary Oakley Thanks Gary. I really appreciate the positive response. I have uploaded a few new videos that I was intending to make over the year. I will start doing frequent videos of training tips and also race and kit reviews. Hopefully you enjoy.
Steven Garland Thanks. I really appreciate that. I love the process of chasing my goals and I know If I keep working hard it will click eventually. Thanks for your feedback.
Brilliant honest recap! Join the club with the stitch issues, they’ve been ruining my races for a good couple of years now! You’ll totally grow from this and go again next year much stronger.... the Forest tracks will be perfect for training 🎲🎲
The FOD Runner Thanks Andy. My initial research has been really mixed wrt to stitches. There seems to be conflicting theories as to the cause. I will keep digging. Have you found anything that helps?
The Welsh Runner not yet mate, mine is down to bloating and I get a full diaphragm stitch like you said, starting left side and moving across but the epicentre for me is right below the sternum. Since Abingdon marathon I’ve decided to get my gut in check and started taking some pro biotics which, after 2 weeks seem to be calming things down 🤞although I know I’m in the minority for that cause of a stitch, others are not getting enough oxygen into the diaphragm and chest breathing rather than belly breathing
@@TheWelshRunner I suffered from these a lot a few years ago - I stopped drinking so much water before races and seems to have stopped the issue. Hope this is the reason...
Matt - loved watching your build up on here and the ‘gram’ - inspirational! How you got through for all that time with those issues is hard to comprehend. Do you think the answer to why you were experiencing these symptoms as early as 5k to halfway which you wouldn’t experience in training when running at similar intensities, is due to the fact that in training you hadn’t put your body through the huge carb depletion/loading?
Ed Eley Thanks for the comment Ed. You may be right. I am not sure yet. I am currently researching possible causes and will have to try a few things out in training or for another race. Initial research has shown 3 conflicting causes of stitches. None of which point to the deplete/load phase but I don’t think it can be ruled out. Anything that is different to a normal session or race must be included in my evaluation. Thanks for your comment.
I follow your running from a distance, in a 21st century stalkery way! It's a fascinating video, I enjoyed it. I don't doubt your mental strength nor your anaerobic engine. I'm struck that it seems you can't do yourself justice at the marathon. Sorry I know you're aware of that. As someone with a different physical set-up (I've never broken 16 minutes for 5k but I've run 2.26.30 over the marathon), I slightly suspect that it's something inate at present in your metabolism. But I think you could train your body to handle the final 12k, but it might take a different strategy. Perhaps moving away from speedwork and just spend the winter nailing the miles. I used to train at as much as 150 miles a week when I ran 2.26. If you fancy doing a few brutally long training runs, I'm based in Brecon. I'm also wondering about aiming for 2.25 in the spring, though I have so much work to do for that.
Matthew Jones Are you the speedster that shot off in The Wales Marathon 2016 and left me in your wake 😂? I also remember reading your excellent blog. I hope things have improved for you and you are making a good come back. I was cautious for this block due to my injury earlier in the year. I have no doubt that a bigger aerobic base will bring better results. I need that. I also need the longer runs to improve my fat utilisation. There are plenty of things to address. Not sure what caused the issues in this marathon. It may be a case that I would have blown up anyway but to get a stitch and vomiting so early in the race is concerning. I’m definitely up for some mammoth Brecon runs. 👊
@@TheWelshRunner ha, that was me back in the day. it was the last marathon i did before i got unwell and i'm only now getting back into it! ran a solid 2.41 in toronto and now just need to see if i can put together a good few months of training. your training is incredible though. 3.30m/km 14km run today? even at my best i was not capable or willing to push that hard. or perhaps it's comfortable for you! i'm preparing for a 100 mile ultra early december too, so needing to really get ready for that sort of endurance. then in the new year, it'll be all guns blazing for manchester or london. be great to try to get pushed faster by someone with your sort of engine!
Go back to basic, buy a casio STR 900 watch .. and lap u in every 5 K .. and use ur constand speed for ur sub 2.24 marathon .. thats why its so import in ur trainingplan to have those constand speed sessions where u run with that marathon speed .. where you know with feeling what speed you are holding without looking at the clock after each K or mile ..
Thanks for the honest and insightful reflection
Dan Runs Thanks Dan. 👍👊

Thank you for such a positive comment. That means a lot. I am glad you enjoyed the interview style and that you have learned something from it.

piano stein congratulations on a great race and a fantastic time. Well done.

Brilliant video and great insight I love the desire and determination you have to reach your goals

The valencia result must taste sweeter now!!! legend mate.
Thanks for keeping it raw and honest 👊🏼
You’ll get your 2:24... you don’t need me to tell you that. Not a matter of if but when 👍🏼
Thanks Rhys. I will keep at it until I do.
freaking well done your mental strength is incredible will remember this video next time I'm thinking of giving up in a race =)
MrMe1609 Thank you. I think each time something goes wrong you grow tougher mentally. 👍👊
Considering all the issues you experienced, you done amazing! New PB to top it off 🙂🙌
Moneil Patel Thanks mate. A PB is a nice consolation. Everyone knows I wanted more but I will learn and come back stronger. 👍👊

The Welsh Runner - no problem! Keep up the great work on the roads and on here. Really looking forward to watching your journey unfold!
Well done mate. 👍🏻
Tom Rankin Thanks Tom. Not the day I was expecting but another marathon experience and a PB. So I must learn and progress. 👍
You’re legend mate, keep up the good great work. Maybe one day I’ll bump into you as I only live in Swansea. You’ll find me on the trails 👍🏻
Sounds horrendous, good effort for digging in and getting it done ✅
Gethin Hosford Thanks Gethin. Not sure I would have on a different day but knowing the support I’d received meant I just had to dig in.

I can see a lot of positives in that race. Come back stronger and get the PB you want next year and of course enjoy getting fatter over winter 😋
MrSeether75 Thanks. I will certainly learn and come back stronger, and yes I will enjoy the Winter too 😂
