Solid session and another great video, as Kelly said more miles in the marathon bank and this is an absolute beast of a performance 👌 and bed grenades?! 😂 and a present under the bridge?! 💩
Great video. Haha just as Kelly said about the Grenades dropping under the duvet, I actually ended up just getting under the duvet. Massive coincidence! 😂😂
Thanks Zack. Absolutely. If you can train hard and have fun at the same time it makes thing much easier. Kelly has been the difference in this block. Her help and banter has been incredible.
Nailing those big sessions Matt! I've been following your journey for a while and have never seen you looking stronger. Looking forward to seeing what time you run in the marathon.
Thanks Shane. Glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed editing this one because I felt like more of our personalities were caught on camera and it shows the teamwork and banter we have between us.
Never fails to motivate, entertain and guide us Matt &Kelly 👍 Things like foot ache, Watch out of battery, weather conditions could be a blow for my long runs but for you all it matters is you train - and you finish the session that's planned.. even if it involves taking tired Kelly on bike ride.. erm, lets not go into that.. 😉 Loved the banter, music and editing. The runs look smooth as always.. Keep it up, mate 👐
Loving Kelly - sorry I’m not willing, I’m tired 😂. & imagine 14% battery that is major running fear especially when doing a session. Love the banter between you two and well done on getting it done in that wind it looked hard on the video.
That workout is 💪 . Really enjoyed the beginning. You can add shoes in STRYD as well to keep track of mileage on them, plus pull up data to see which ones are more efficient for you.
Yeah that’s a good shout. I really should log my shoes more accurately. I’m also still deciding which shoes to wear in the marathon so the efficiency in each shoe would be helpful. 👍
@@TheWelshRunner I've done some experiments using a bunch of different flats on same course and same workout and looking at the stryd data shows me a lot. Try to do it in similar weather. But adding shoes let's you go back later on and easily find what you were wearing. Good luck in your marathon. As a sub 2:25 guy I'd say you're in that shape or damb near close to it.
I started watching the video with 14% battery. Panicked and asked my wife if I could use her phone to watch it. In the end I persevered with mine, hope it lasts for me to finish this comme
@@TheWelshRunner ha ha look forward to that one then.. Btw I can’t recall having to go for a number 2 on the run before unlike yourself from what your wife said 🤣🤣 There was Paula Radcliffe in the Marathon who also had to take a quick pit stop 👍
Thanks for putting out your content Matt I have been enjoying it and also a shout out to Kelly for her interviews.. I very much enjoyed watching Holly Rush pt 1 & 2 well done!
The dreaded Garmin “Unproductive” after you crush a run. I bought an extra Garmin charging cable and keep it in my truck for emergency low power situationtions
For me you want to be already in shape for the marathon so not too early In a block. I like ~4 weeks before a marathon. A couple of sessions and long runs still to do after this and a taper. But pretty much ready to go. Fun fact: Italian marathoner Stefano Baldini did this session 3 weeks before he ran 2:07:57 in the London Marathon 1997. His averages were 2:53 and 3:02, averaging 2:58/km. He did 19km rather than 21km. He went on to win Olympic Gold in Athens 2004. I’m sure he will have done this session in that block too. The Gold he won was the famous marathon where the leader de Lima was attacked by an Irish priest at 22 miles. He carried on but slipped to bronze. Baldini finished strong taking gold. I’m not sure why I don’t mention this stuff in the vlog. In hindsight it’s quite interesting.
@@TheWelshRunner Thanks Matt! I'm less than 5 weeks to go now (May 2nd). Putting it on the schedule for next week. If my goal is 8:30 pace, should I do 8:15/8:45 splits? All In!
@@Teddy_J Yes that's about right. The session bit will take approx. 1h50 so you can shorten the warm up or cool down to reduce the total volume of time if you need to. I would normally build up to this session with other sessions but I do not know your current block. Good luck and enjoy.
Hey Matt, that session was mind blowing, well done! Just occurred to me, do you ever take on any other coaching clients? I've had a couple of different coaches, but never had someone who understands the impact type 1 does / can have. Perhaps after this marathon block...? (wouldn't want to interfere with that!)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I have a number of clients. All different levels but all with the drive and commitment to improve and chase their goals. Kelly is the only type 1 diabetic I have coached but it has helped me gain a good understanding and appreciation of the challenges type 1 runners face. I agree that you should commit to your current block. If you do want any further information on coaching in the future you can contact me through thewelshrunner.com/coaching 👍
Matt, I noticed that you said you felt sick after sprinting at the end of your session because you hadn't done much work at vo2 max. I've experienced some minor feelings of sickness recently after sprinting myself, and my team's coach has mostly been prescribing anaerobic intervals as of late - could you explain that statement?
Yeah basically what I was saying is that I haven’t don’t the conditioning required to handle anaerobic work very well at this stage. When I do more faster work my body learns to handle it better.
This session suggests that I could be in that sort of shape but it’s all risk/reward. I think 2:24 (5:30/mile) is a good goal for this block. But I won’t sandbag if I feel ready for a quicker time on the day then I’ll roll the dice. It could go the other way too. If it’s hot (my nemesis) then I’ll have to be careful with my pacing strategy.

That’s the best. Having that support and help around you can’t wait for Wrexham (Cheshire) marathon, going to smash it !
Love the support you and Kelly give each other! Great session Matt can't wait to see you smash Wrexham marathon.
Nothing adds more tension than a watch low in charge. Would have sent me spiralling down the rabbit hole.
‘Will it still count? 🤔’ ‘will I even get fitter if the battery dies 🤣’
Loved it! Great work Kelly
