An 8" .338 PDW is just nuts. Hell, the caliber itself is crazy - the high twist rate approach will yield a lot of interesting setups in the future I predict.
I have an issue with Kevin Brittingham's claims concerning 8.6 Blk. He says (and he says it on video) that an 8.6 Blk puts more energy on target with a 12" barrel (shooting supersonics) than a 308 does with a 20" barrel and with 20% less recoil. He claims it is because of the 1:3 twist. I call BS. I've done the math on his quoted ballistics and the numbers do not add up. I'm pretty sure if super fast twist rates do what he claims, a major manufacturer would have jumped on that bandwagon long ago. Kevin is certainly not the first person to try fast twists. Either way, it's still an interesting cartridge, but you need a large frame rifle (AR-10 size) as it doesn't fit in an AR-15. Of course, bolt guns don't matter in this case.
@edwardlance2379 I don't know how Kevin did his math, but I assume that he added in the rotational energy of the two cartridges. A 300 -350 grain bullet spinning at close to 500k rpm should have a lot of stored energy. The effectiveness is to be determined. The ownership and use of silencers are starting to be more widespread compared 15 years ago. This has resulted in many innovations. The baffle designs and materials used in silencers is an example. Fast twist barrels were not needed to help subsonic bullets expand until widespread use of subsonic bullets were a thing, hence the recent innovation. The gist of what I'm saying is that because of the NFA, some firearms technology is behind. It is an exciting time for firearms enthusiasts, with 3d printing flow through suppressors, fast twist barrels, and affordable thermal optics.
I did the math on the rotational energy of a 150 grain 30 cal bullet from a factory rifle (1:12 twist) and it was on the order of 9 ft-lbs (it's been a while). The 8.6 was something like 33 ft-lbs. It's not a lot in either case and even if we add the rotational energy to the translational energy of the 338 projectile of the 8.6, it is still nowhere near the impact energy (translational) of the 308.
@@edwardlance2379 I don't mean to be that guy... but math claims don't mean squat in the face of ballistic gel tests. I am very interested in the garmin, please review. Thanks for the video. I‘d love to see how it compares to the BulletSeeker Speedtracker and Labradar. I got the Magnetospeed which I like, but intend to get either of the above or perhaps your garmin device in addition in the future. If you do test it, could you please see if it works well with handguns too? I shoot a lot of revolvers. My friends speedtracker is not well suited to this as it really needs to be mounted on the gun to work well, unlike the labradar you can stand next to.
First off I definitely would love to see a video on that chronograph. My next question is as intrigued by this round as I am and I definitely want one in my gun cabinet question that I have is most bullet manufacturers require 1800 to 2000 ft./s for their bullets to open reliably on target.we are starting off at half of that right at the end of the muzzle, so how effective will this be as a hunting cartridge?
Would like to see you shoot the 285gr EDLX in a 16” without the suppressor with the GarMin. And maybe test out the Gorilla Ammo-their Supersonic-like the 210 TsX. And what about Atkinson Arms ammo?
What are you evaluating? Subsonic barrel length or supersonic barrel length? If Supersonic performance a longer barrel going to help, obviously. If subsonic, I guess you found your point of drag. But what's the "so what" of losing 20fps? I'm going to hazard a guess that the point if drag correlates to the quietest subs. Because the powder is all burnt up in the barrel. Hence the drag. So what means "subsonic performance?" Sound suppression? Max subsonic velocity 🤔 Or long range accuracy? I'm going to hazard a guess that fir most people it's Suppression.
The Garmin uses radar, so it's similar to the Lab Radar chrono. The Garmin is a lot smaller though physically and runs about $100 more than the Lab Radar.

How does one build the ruger american in a 8.6?
One goes out and buys a Ruger American short action, preferably in 308 or 65CM and sends the gun to Mostek to be rebarreld. In all seriousness, mostek can rebarrel almost any gun into almost any caliber as long as it fits in the action you have. Thanks for watching!
Did you get the 1:3 twist or the 1:6.5" from Mos-Tek? Trying to decide what twist I want on my custom build. Can you do a Super Sonic Test next?
I got the 1:3 and I haven't worked up a super sonic loading yet, but I plan to in the future. Thanks for watching!
What about supersonic rounds out of the same barrel lengths? Would the 16 be the better option? Which would be the best option for both super and sub sonics?
But if the chrono is mounted to the gun, how am I going to accidentally shoot it?
Thats why you bring friends to the range.
That rifle at 3:40 is beautiful what us it
Thanks for the video.
Yes to Garmin video and Yes to a ballistics gel video with 8.6
First off I definitely would love to see a video on that chronograph.
Honestly, the more I research this caliber with a 1:3 twist, the more I'm convinced that it's a perfectly optimized subsonic caliber.
Does 8.6 come in super sinic as well?
How quiet was the paladan compare to the bolt q rifle
Full video on C1 please
Probably going to make that happen! Thanks for watching man!
I’m down to see your take on the Garmin.
Might just have to do it! Thanks for watching!
The Garmin uses radar, so it's similar to the Lab Radar chrono. The Garmin is a lot smaller though physically and runs about $100 more than the Lab Radar.
