- Everett Buckwalter of Pennsylvania knows all the ins and outs of his 1994 Gravely 16-G Professional garden tractor. These machines were introduced in 1988 by the historic 100-plus year old Gravely Company. Lots of features including a powerful rear-mounted engine, a cast iron grill, and more made this a valuable workhorse around the home, the business or the farm.

Nice tractor. Lots of gears. Sharp looking.
Definitely unique to have engine in back but still a full hood. Pretty cool.
Thanks for the video Brian. Unique machine there. Very nice. These were well built. My compliments.

With the engine in the back looks like the weight would help with traction !! Nice!😊
I'd love to have one of those Gravely tractors, thanks for sharing!
gravely for the win
I have same tractor . Awesome quality.
Love my 18G Gravely
What a fine machine. Thanks for this review!! Would love to see if he has some of the many attachments made for this unit! Regarding the 3 blade mowing deck, there were actually a large number of machines back in the 60s, 70s, 80's, 90s that had three blade mowing decks so this was quite common. My still in the family since new 1969 Cub Cadet 125 (12hp Kohler) has the three blade deck, as does my 1970 Cub Cadet 147 (Kohler 14 hp) & my brother's Case. Regarding the rear weight, yes these tractors are known as the pound for pound tow champions of two wheel drive garden tractors as is seen at tractor pulls (unmodified of course) where the traction is so impressive because of the rear weight which adds traction. That weight does have some concerns though with steering being less effective (as you touched on) and that is why some will mount front end weights on these. But the rear weight is still overall a big plus & the gear transmission on these are swell and long long lasting (if not abused of course). It does limit the machine however because a zero category 3 point hitch was not available on these rear engine models such as was available on so many competitors (such as John Deere, or Bolens, or J.I.Case garden tractors etc, which were front engine & rear drive.) Also great to have is one of those monstrously heavy (about 300 lbs) commercial Gravely mowing decks (if you have the power which 18 hp should be fine with). Ideally owning a rear engine & transmission 2 wheel drive garden tractor like this Gravely is great along with a front engine rear wheel drive machine with a 3-point! In addition the garden tractors with the larger diameter rear wheel/tires also makes quite a positive impression (as on J.I. Case or the miniature farm tractor style Power Kings, even with their smaller 16 inch wheels (instead of the huge 24" jobs), which I think are overall ideal for a suburban garden tractor (keeps the machine more stable (lower to the ground) ;-)
Well said. I was going to comment about the 3 bladed mower decks that you covered quite well. As a kid I ran an AC B12 with a 48" 3 blade mower deck. The 12 hp may have been a little light for the heavy mowing we did, when it wore out it was replaced with a 16 hp engine that ran it for a couple decades.
Gravely was once a part of Studebaker, STP was also initially a Studebaker product.
What a great machine! Thanks!
I have this machine also with hydraulic liftable hitch.
--that is terrific. Would love to see a video on your machine and the details about the hydraulic setup!
I like that.
John deere 300 series ran 3 blades, prior to 94
I have a 16g with the 60'' deck.
"If You Ain't First Your Last!!!"
If it was mine I would definitely use it to cut my grass every week.
Yes, it makes sense to use these tanks, with the understanding that with all that metal, they can be quite readily rebuilt, or refurbished, or restored decades later if required. I have a 56 year old Cub Cadet 125. Original hydro-static trans and tough cast iron rear axle, second Kohler engine.
Those things are tanks. I remember my neighbor had one. He never changed the oil and would use the electric starter to ride it back to the house when it ran out of gas.
I recall the Cub Cadet 125 (1969 model, 12 hp, hydostatic) I was mowing the lawn with, as a kid, back in the 1970s. It started clanking and clunking in the hot Summer air and finally it just stopped! I had enough brains to check the oil level. What oil??!! There was none showing on the dip stick! So I drained what remained (about 3 ounces!!), let it cool and filled it properly with fresh oil. The thing started & ran for a another 5-6 years before the engine was replaced! So these things can take a lot of abuse!! I still have that machine with the original hydrostatic trans. You will be glad to know that I actually check the oil in my machines ever since that time! I like heavy duty stuff so I drive a Town Car! ;-)
My 1984 john deere 318 has 3 blades. I wonder where he got his info.
If he hasn't mowed with it, how does he know it doesnt bog down in thick grass?
I don’t know what this guy was talking about no other company had a 3 blade mower deck for the time as his is a 94. My 65 economy Jim dandy has a 3 blade 48 in deck
@@justinreed2708My 1968 IH Cub Cadet has a 48" three bladed deck!🤷♂️
