I was a little feller when we endured the 1978 blizzard. It was the roads with the dairy farms that got plowed out first. My dad bought a John Deere 440 industrial tractor with a 71 loader and Henry backhoe on it a few years earlier. After three days of being snowed in he dig his way out to the main road. I do remember the milk truck followed a Case 2670 four wheel drive tractor with a big blade. Even so, a lot dairies ended up dumping their milk. I think the coldest winter I remember would have been 92 to 93. One morning it was so cold my mom's new Chevy Lumina and my Dad's Chevy diesel would not start. My 82 Dodge an my 60 John Deere started so we had the jumper cables out on both vehicles to get them going.

Some of the best compliments I can give you guys is that 1.) You are absolute pros at cow and calf care. Bravo. 2.) Your entire place, inside and out, is meticulously maintained. Everything is so organized and clean. Having the boys helping on the farm contributes to that but I'm sure when other dairy farmers watch your videos, that's something they notice. Thanks SO MUCH for your videos. I enjoy them all, especially with the Internationals. ;)

Seeing the old picture of the MTA in the deep snow, and now seeing how little snow we now get is pretty telling. I remember us as a kid in the mid 80's watching dad pushing snow with our 440B JD Skidder or the 4030 tractor with a front blade. Now we hardly see the big snow storms that we use to in Atlantic Canada.

I’ll make sure it nursed and then load it in the truck back seat take it to the house and my wife uses hairdryer and paper towels. About 5 hours later back to mom and a blanket. Thanks so much for this video. Brought back many memories for me, as I grew up in Buffalo County and hauled milk to AG in Arcadia in the 80’s. I believe I may have picked up milk for some of your relatives in Travers Valley. And yes, I remember the Travers Valley Bar as well. Some of those winters in the 80’s were brutal to haul milk in, but it made me very thankful to have a desk job later in life. Really respect what your family does. If you ever want to chat, let me know.

People have forgotten about what it used to take to get the chores done. Y'all definitely have harder and colder winters than us. I can remember 20 below here only one time. I'm a couple years younger than you. But I don't know how we got done what we did with the M tractor and the later 2 wheel drive tractors now that we have the 4 wheel drive tractors and cabs. God Bless Y'all for what you do.

We had a 200' x 40' pole barn. We had just finished bedding the cattle outside and all of a sudden I heard this huge boom. the middle rafters broke in half and if you looked at it from the top it looked like the inside of a football stadium. Luckily all the cattle were outside in the new bedding. That next Summer we got about 8 local farmers with loaders and we lifted the whold shed from the inside and put posts in the middle.

Born in 1980, from about a young age I remember the snows an snow banks cleaned our driveway a yard with the ol case 530 gas tractor with the bucket. Super cold days kept one exhaust fan running. Kept the cows inside cleaned an beaded. An hoping nothing else freezes like the silo unloader.

I remember winters where we had a lot of snow and couldn't haul manure out to the field. We would clean out the barn, t hrowing the manure on a loader, and pile it in an open spot alongside the barn. In the spring, we would load it on the spreader and spread it on the field. We had hogs instead of cows.

Biggest blizzard I remember in VA was 1996. 2' of drifting snow, and it was a week of plowing the stuff and towing the Milk Truck in and out. Longest stretch of sub freezing temps was 2 weeks in 1982. We had a bunch of snows in 2010/11 , but had time to recover between them. Had an unpleasant few weeks in late January this year, but really wasn't that bad. Mainly because I don't Dairy anymore... 🤔😯👍🥛!

Dairy farmers really don’t get enough credit for the work they do. Have to be on call24/7 if you want things to go the best possible. I milked cows for 25 years when it’s 30 below or 105. You have to be committed to your cows to be successful. All the jobs from calving to breeding to feeding to cleaning makes a big difference. Many other jobs that I didn’t list, are also demanding. I tip my hat to the people still milking!

Your hammer at the end of the video is for stonework. I have the same heirloom hammer. It was used building the a couple of stone farmhouses back in the 1920s and 1940s on my family's old farmstead. The snow years tend to track solar activity (sun flips its magnetic poles every 11 years).

My dad helped run a dairy that milked 2,000+ head of cows and said they calves that were born in the cold weather were healthier, we live in Louisiana close to Shreveport, later the dairy got shut down it even had a petting zoo, a water park came in it's place but did not last long, I remember the fresh milk and all the good things the milk made, not only running the dairy because he was an assistant to the veterinarian he also ran a milk route when the bottles were glass and had a plastic coated paper lid, we enjoyed the ice cream , and everything that was made, it was a really big business Soo what happened because we don't live like this anymore, babies have to drink the powdered milk but we got raised on the fresh milk as soon as it came out and was still warmed it got strained and heated to kill any germs and we were waiting at the table to watch mama pour it in a snuff glass that everyone collected back then, the snuff glasses had a metal lid and when the older people got through with them we inherited them , the world us fussing about the PFAS and im going to assume that's plastic containers, my question is when did the paper containers come because I remember the small boxes of milk that came to the lunch rooms, was wondering why if glass was safer "Why did it get stopped"? and I also remember the choice over a soda was a cold glass of milk, as the praise was it was good for your bones and teeth, all I can think is SABATAGE, changing a great thing, probably also what changed was what you feed the cows and I wish all this would stop with the meddling of how we used to get to eat healthy, it's like there is a plan to stop every good thing from happening and its affecting everyone because the government has went too far with meddling and stirring someone else's life and we are suffering, wish it was the way it was when I was a child, obviously all the new gadgets that helped with the milking was a great thing and speeded things up to deliver it faster, it looks like the plastic was the only thing that came along not good, don't know about the feed because the cows eat grass and the type of grass is what made the milk taste good , also we would pick the hay after it got cut and dried, we packed the barn at our house and using the pitchfork was a job but not complaining, just saying people now a days don't want to work Soo you have to hire people from somewhere else, and this immigration thing is going to take workers away that are needed to run some of the outfits, the dairies that put the milk on the shelf and the ones that supply local townships, a dying art, I love what you do and pray you get to keep it going.
