Tim, what I find interesting on this project is the old farmer’s always told me that when the outside rounds of a field were done the field was 1/4 way done. Even with the odd shape you mowed that math of 1.5hrs to do outside rounds would put you at 6hrs for the whole property. Those old farmers sure did always know what they were talking about.
Nice video. I used to mow with a similar set up and then switched to a JD997 zero turn mower and cut my mowing time from 7 hours to 2 hours. The jd997 can handle very tall grass. As you showed in this video, the subcompact tractors are nice but lack the power to get things done quickly.
My little blue 94 Ford 1320 bought new in 94, yup 30 years in this seat, 5' cuts 1 acre per hour with ease, keeping pto at 540 burns about 3 quarts per acre/hour. in heavy grass 2 quarts in light duty.
Hard to beat a rotary cutter. I use a 60 inch Howse brand from the 80s. They are lighter and my sub compact runs it fine. I use a massey 25hp and it has a fan that keeps the oil cool. I would use a finish mower but I like knowing that when I hit a branch or rock I don't have to worry about spindle/blade damage.
well, i have ten acres and about half of it is mowable. I started out cutting it with my 1025. did a great job. was slow though. then I got a 9 series zero turn and cut my time in half.
we had a flail chopper in ohio we used to chop oats or grass to feed for silage, then we took the upper off and put cap on to chop corn stalks and it worked well for brush
For cleaning off the grille, I have a small battery powered workshop blower that is just the thing for getting all the grass seeds and fluff off the tractor and give the thing a quick clean when I'm done. Saves bringing the seeds back to the house yard and the shed..

I used to mow an R/C model airplane field with a Ford 8N and flail mower of equal age. No rocks, no brush, and it was set low. Did a finish mower quality cut. I use a 48” Everything Attachments HD rotary on my 1025R, but in addition to an old pasture now mostly just a dog play area I mow trails through brush lots and paths through woods. LOTS of rocks, roots and occasional small fallen branches and dogwood/milliflori rose.
I have a 2032R with a 6’ fail mower and mow 4.1 acres. It takes about 3:15 hours to do. It is surprising that a bit more HP and 2’ more mower will cut the time by a fair bit. My ground is a bit smoother but not park like.
2’ more cut. …. One could say that it is 50% more cut. BUT if you could overlap, I suspect you get 5 ft cut per pass where I get 3’ cut per pass. So, 66% more.
I use my 2025R with a Frontier 48' b-hog to do walking/ATV trails and it's perfect. If someone would make a 54" cutter I'd seriously consider buying it. Like you said Tim. A 48" works but could be a little bigger.
Hi Tim! Loved the video. I just finished mowing my 8 acre field with my 1025R and a 4’ RC2048 cutter. Grass was taller than the hood. Slow going to cut through that much material but it gets the job done. Hasn’t been anything I can’t do with this tractor. Might take longer than I’d like but that’s another issue!! Took me about 14 hours. Keep up the good videos!!
Absolutely have to agree with you TIM, a canopy and fan make a huge difference on a tractor when mowing. I use an green top canopy from ebay and a 16" radiator electric fan from Amazon and made my own mount and screen.
I use this same set up on my 5 acre lot. It takes ALL DAY. Grass isn't as thick so it does a better job and I use less fuel but it sure uses a lot of time.
Good vid Tim. I have an old Woods 5' rotary cutter pulled by old IH 274 diesel (27.4 PTO HP) and could mow the stuff you were cutting in high range 2nd or sometimes have to drop down to high range 1st. Slow, but got-er-done (10 - 12 acres). Do it now with a Deere 997 ZT with 72" deck, lots quicker and lots better.
Your points are spot on. I have more trimming in my woods which takes more time than the long clear areas. Even with my 6 foot rotary cutter with somewhat more acres, it still takes time. I guess it’s all relative, and what one is willing to put up with. But doing it with a cab tractor is so much more tolerable :-). Blessings
I think all things considered for the height of the grass, the size of the tractor and the mower, it did what its supposed to do. Not sure how often this is maintained but Im sure time and effort all around would come down with more frequent maintenance. The TB equipment seems to holding up well for the value.

Great video work. I mow my 7 acres with the 1025R and the GM1060E. Although I don’t let the pasture get out of hand by cutting them once every 3-4 weeks. The grooming mower on the 3point, in my opinion works better for me than the belly mower. Living in SC, I agree an oil temp gauge would be nice. Thanks for your videos.
Tim. Your video was spot on. I spent 7 hour the other day to mow 6 acres of thistle. Much bigger tractor 60 HP Kubota, with 6 ft brush hog, but new air ride seat. The issue is how rough my field is. Much rougher than yours with terraces carved into the hillside years ago. I can't do more than 5-6 hours a day, in low gear, without morphine at end of for my surgically repaired back. :-) I would like a much bigger bat wing but don't have the rear hydraulics, yet. So dollars for batwing ($$$), dollars for hydraulics ($$), or just mow a few acres every week and rely on drugs to recover. As a hobby farmer it looks like the third option for now.
My 48 Brush Hog is 40+ years old, and still works perfectly and has never broken down. I bet a Flail mower cant go a season. They are definitely the best value per dollar youll ever spend on implements.
Flail mowers do alright. I have an Italian built 88" that I purchased new about 15 years ago. I have mowed about 80 acres per year with it every year. Most years It mowed that area twice, so 160 acres x 15 = 2400 acres to date. I've put one new set of belts on and turned the fails, that's it for mechanical work. I just grease it and go. It cuts fast and leaves a nice job behind. The material gets chopped up fine which is good for regrowth. The suction created by the fails lifts the material flattened by the one set of tires that runs on the uncut pasture. I also have a 72" Landpride bush hog type mower ( inherited) but don't use it. The flail mower is faster and does a nicer job. Cost is the only issue. I think the Landpride cost about $1200 new while the flail mower was about $8,000, so it ought to work better!
The SCUTs work well only on properties which are small. The SCUTs niche is working in more confined areas where their smaller turning radius is an advantage. When you get to long straight runs, bigger will always be quicker.
Tim an old farmer taught me if you think you have been exposed to poison ivy wash with bar laundry soap washes the oils off also helps to use if you get poisson ivy to dry it out
I remember last year you used the blue tracker (battery) cutting the hole field and it did a great job. I do miss watching you work on that tracker around the farm. Sorry to hear that there out of business.
My LS tractor the seat is like sitting on plywood and I really don't have leg room. I bought a mower from tsc and they don't really have instructions except for cutting the driveshaft. I bought a 5 footer but still not as wide as the back tires, so i kinda overlap when mowing and I find it better to remove the bucket. It's over priced for what it is and i probably wouldn't buy another one like it. The lower pins i had to loctite them to keep the nuts tight. I never had that happen before. I like that seat you have, it's like the one on my zero turn and it doesn't work anymore, maybe from the salt air in Florida. This mower does cut well, just this year the grass and weeds were taller than the tractor in spots.
Deere will let me order a canopy and fan. Green Parts Store will ship for free with your code. I had decided to try the canopy alone until I heard your comment about the fan.

I find I’m faster if I don’t picture frame the mow first. I take the longest straightest line and do my cleanups in the turns. Also I don’t think you need an older tractor. A 2wd 5050e cost about as much as a 1025r with a loader. I mow a couple properties like this with my 3025e and a 5’ rotary cutter. I always question whether or not I should be doing it. I do enjoy it though. It’s a nice change of pace from the spraying I normally do.
A lot of this question depends on the job you’re doing. I own a junk and debris removal company myself and love the 1025R we will be using it on Friday to remove a bunch of old rotten railroad tie garden plots and level up the yard afterward. It is perfect for a job like that. My skid steer would tear their yard to oblivion.
Tim, I just got the new seat figuring it would work on my 2018 1025R. Well I’m having a challenge. I had to remove the existing seat hinge plate and use the supplied mounting brackets. That means I can’t use my backhoe. I will be contacting the vendor to see if they have an alternative. I will update this as we get a resolution
It does not work with the backhoe. Sorry. I mentioned that in the full review/install. I believe that info is also in the seat’s description. Unfortunately, I failed to mention it in this episode. Sorry.
Tim, we talked to the manufacturer and they said we were the first to bring it to their attention. They indicated they would try to fabricate a base with a hinge
The number one advantage a flail mower has over a rotary is it doesn’t throw rocks, sticks, etc, I have had rotary mowers throw rocks 300 feet, unless your out in the middle of nowhere then I would take the rotary over a flail.
Would be interesting to mow this property with every one of your tractors and implements as part of a series then do a summary episode comparing them all. Include in this a zero-turn if you think it can mow this property without tearing it up. You could include subjective elements like sub-compact vs compact vs utility comfort to mow the property. Part of that will be features of the tractor but also wheelbase, width and weight should benefit larger tractors. Just some thoughts. Thank you
Tim, while I agree that larger property mowing would not be real feasible with a sub compact, I would caution folks on how big of a tractor/cutter they should purchase. If they go to a large frame tractor (often the case with the 99-100hp tractor, they could end up needing a smaller tractor to do trim work under and around trees or other objects in many properties. Personally, I would never take a fail mower to a property that I did not know or a property I knew had debris and or rocks on it.
Great video. I do side mowing as a means of extra cash. Based on your money videos, I doubt the land owner would pay what you feel you needed for the time spent. As far as the mower, you called it a rotary cutter. Is it a cutter with a sharpened blade or a bush hog bar? When I’m asked to do a property, my first question is “how long has it been since it last cut”? If it’s over a month I take the brush hog. If it’s a monthly cutting, I’ll take a finishing mower or flail mower. As you mentioned they all have advantages and disadvantages. Good video 👍

@TractorTimewithTim Aside from the typical Tiger and Alamo commerical mowers, Peruzzo makes a 4200-R triflex flail mower that looks pretty interesting.
I gotta say I prefer the cut quality of a flail mower.... even with hammer blades I can cut my lawn. Then I can take it out into the forest and it is more nimble around trees etc. That being said I don't have a rough cut mower to compare....
Need to put a reverse fan they don’t exist but should be an option. or have one 3-d printed if it senses i’m getting too hot it reverses to self clean dust etc.
Correct. The last one I used was a 1960s or 70s model on my grandfather’s IH 300 tractor. I did some research a few years back on the newer versions for my old JD 790, but never demo’s or picked one up.
Fair enough. There are many different types of flail mowers, and there are many different types of materials. So, plenty of room for different experiences!
If i remember right it looks like the batwing mower mows better then the 3 point hitch mowers but it seems like a bigger tractor is needed for the batwing
Front cut; I believe the bigger Deer tractors in Europe have a front PTO option. Obviously more tractor cost. Would the mini front end articulated loaders be an option for front cut?
Re flail mowers. An old professor when I was in engineering school told us that the probability of failure of any mechanical device is a function of the cube of the number of moving parts. Twice as many parts, eight times higher probability of failure. But, the probability that the failure will leave the device inoperable can be lower. Loosing one of sixty-four flails doesn’t leave the flail inoperable. Lose a gear on the single point, and you’re done for at least a day.
I have a 1023E and I watch TTWT all the time. I really enjoy seeing what you have going on. Watching you haul that loader and grapple around for hours is agonizing. I realize you have some rocks there to deal with and I get that. But JD has engineered this tractor so well, it take 2 minutes to remove the loader. Why wouldn't you have it on site, but remove it for the hours you spend bouncing around the field. Plus your center of gravity will be lower for a smoother ride side to side. My 2 cents. You probably are used to it and do not even notice. Like my neighbor who used to mow his lawn with a 1025R with a belly mower, loader on the front and backhoe on the back. 🙂😲
If I take it off, folks have a fit. If I leave it on other folks have a fit. I used it here to push back some brush on the brush piles. I find it advantageous to have it on while mowing.
@TractorTimewithTim well I certainly get that. And you are very good at what you do. I really appreciate how, in one day, on my 2 acres, I can till my garden, haul things in the loader, then remove everything, drive over my belly mower, and mow the lawn. And only lose 10 minutes switching things over. I love it. And mowing with the one series with a belly mower is fun for me. Lots of blade speed and nimble enough to mow around the house. Now, if I could just stop hooking the blinkers on tree limbs...
I have had a different experice with my flail mower, i have a 28 hp compact tractor and using a 5ft flail in heavy grass requires a lower gear and seems to bog the tractor more than my 5 ft rotary cutter.
How much would you charge the tower people to mow this if you were being paid by them? 6hours mowing and some travel time. and would your hourly rate be much different if you were using the 3 or 4 series Johnny and the 10-foot batwing mower. This video was great example of the seat time you can have if mowing your own property or the same time earning a living.
Hi Tim I have only owned a bunch of belly mower garden tractors and now B2601. I do only smaller yards with grass sometimes that tall. I really don’t have to many problems with using just that. I was wondering is there an advantage to a rotary cutter vs belly mower? Other than getting under trees. Having a rotary cutter for that would be great.
Rotary cutter is built stronger. The blade mechanism is totally different, with swing away blades. Much less risk of damaging the gearbox. Especially in the kubota MMM which have the center blade directly attached to the gearbox. (Deere belt drives all 3 blades). Additionally, rotary cutters are equipped with stump jumpers to help the spindle ride over larger obstacles. These cutters are simply made tougher for mowing larger stuff.

I have 6.5 acres and a few cows keep it mowed and fertilized for the most part. I shred 2 times a year with an undersized 5’ Ford shredder that is old old. Would like to get a 6’ since that’s width of tractor but cost doesn’t add up for two cuttings a year. I’m wondering if the HST is cause if heat issue as they’re more setup for stop and goes than constant run? I have gear drive but no temp on hydro so have no clue if it runs cooler or not with hydro.

This would be a good test case for HydroPlus's larger hydro cooler to see if temps come down or improve with sustained use

My LS tractor the seat is like sitting on plywood and I really don't have leg room. I bought a mower from tsc and they don't really have instructions except for cutting the driveshaft. I bought a 5 footer but still not as wide as the back tires, so i kinda overlap when mowing and I find it better to remove the bucket. It's over priced for what it is and i probably wouldn't buy another one like it. The lower pins i had to loctite them to keep the nuts tight. I never had that happen before. I like that seat you have, it's like the one on my zero turn and it doesn't work anymore, maybe from the salt air in Florida. This mower does cut well, just this year the grass and weeds were taller than the tractor in spots.
I do commercial work with a 2025r and a 5' light duty rotary and that is about all it will handle.
Deere will let me order a canopy and fan. Green Parts Store will ship for free with your code. I had decided to try the canopy alone until I heard your comment about the fan.
Great informative video. Would like to see it with a 5 or 6 foot, and then the flex wing. Then summarize each mower, the rate per hour of each, and total cost per job per machine for those 4.3 acres

I find I’m faster if I don’t picture frame the mow first. I take the longest straightest line and do my cleanups in the turns. Also I don’t think you need an older tractor. A 2wd 5050e cost about as much as a 1025r with a loader. I mow a couple properties like this with my 3025e and a 5’ rotary cutter. I always question whether or not I should be doing it. I do enjoy it though. It’s a nice change of pace from the spraying I normally do.
Fair statement on the 2wd 5e. Quite cost effective.
A lot of this question depends on the job you’re doing. I own a junk and debris removal company myself and love the 1025R we will be using it on Friday to remove a bunch of old rotten railroad tie garden plots and level up the yard afterward. It is perfect for a job like that. My skid steer would tear their yard to oblivion.

Tim, I just got the new seat figuring it would work on my 2018 1025R. Well I’m having a challenge. I had to remove the existing seat hinge plate and use the supplied mounting brackets. That means I can’t use my backhoe. I will be contacting the vendor to see if they have an alternative. I will update this as we get a resolution

My New Holland 1630 has an oil cooler in front of the radiator. My 1520 may also.
The number one advantage a flail mower has over a rotary is it doesn’t throw rocks, sticks, etc, I have had rotary mowers throw rocks 300 feet, unless your out in the middle of nowhere then I would take the rotary over a flail.

Would be interesting to mow this property with every one of your tractors and implements as part of a series then do a summary episode comparing them all. Include in this a zero-turn if you think it can mow this property without tearing it up. You could include subjective elements like sub-compact vs compact vs utility comfort to mow the property. Part of that will be features of the tractor but also wheelbase, width and weight should benefit larger tractors. Just some thoughts. Thank you
Tim, while I agree that larger property mowing would not be real feasible with a sub compact, I would caution folks on how big of a tractor/cutter they should purchase. If they go to a large frame tractor (often the case with the 99-100hp tractor, they could end up needing a smaller tractor to do trim work under and around trees or other objects in many properties.
Personally, I would never take a fail mower to a property that I did not know or a property I knew had debris and or rocks on it.
that extendable wheel would be nice on my brush hog since it doesn't attach to the quick hitch

Great video. I do side mowing as a means of extra cash. Based on your money videos, I doubt the land owner would pay what you feel you needed for the time spent. As far as the mower, you called it a rotary cutter. Is it a cutter with a sharpened blade or a bush hog bar?
When I’m asked to do a property, my first question is “how long has it been since it last cut”? If it’s over a month I take the brush hog. If it’s a monthly cutting, I’ll take a finishing mower or flail mower.
As you mentioned they all have advantages and disadvantages.

Do you have a particular pull type flail in mind? I don't know of any majors that make them...especially flex wing.
@TractorTimewithTim Aside from the typical Tiger and Alamo commerical mowers, Peruzzo makes a 4200-R triflex flail mower that looks pretty interesting.
I gotta say I prefer the cut quality of a flail mower.... even with hammer blades I can cut my lawn. Then I can take it out into the forest and it is more nimble around trees etc. That being said I don't have a rough cut mower to compare....
You mention a few other types of mowing attachments for the tractor. How about a sickle bar mower?

Correct. The last one I used was a 1960s or 70s model on my grandfather’s IH 300 tractor. I did some research a few years back on the newer versions for my old JD 790, but never demo’s or picked one up.

Fair enough. There are many different types of flail mowers, and there are many different types of materials. So, plenty of room for different experiences!
If i remember right it looks like the batwing mower mows better then the 3 point hitch mowers but it seems like a bigger tractor is needed for the batwing

Front cut; I believe the bigger Deer tractors in Europe have a front PTO option. Obviously more tractor cost. Would the mini front end articulated loaders be an option for front cut?

Re flail mowers. An old professor when I was in engineering school told us that the probability of failure of any mechanical device is a function of the cube of the number of moving parts. Twice as many parts, eight times higher probability of failure. But, the probability that the failure will leave the device inoperable can be lower. Loosing one of sixty-four flails doesn’t leave the flail inoperable. Lose a gear on the single point, and you’re done for at least a day.
Losing one hammer would indeed leave it inoperable….so far out of balance that continuing would shake the mower apart.
One of these days I will own a ventrac!
I have a 1023E and I watch TTWT all the time. I really enjoy seeing what you have going on. Watching you haul that loader and grapple around for hours is agonizing. I realize you have some rocks there to deal with and I get that. But JD has engineered this tractor so well, it take 2 minutes to remove the loader. Why wouldn't you have it on site, but remove it for the hours you spend bouncing around the field. Plus your center of gravity will be lower for a smoother ride side to side. My 2 cents. You probably are used to it and do not even notice. Like my neighbor who used to mow his lawn with a 1025R with a belly mower, loader on the front and backhoe on the back. 🙂😲

I used it here to push back some brush on the brush piles. I find it advantageous to have it on while mowing.
@TractorTimewithTim well I certainly get that. And you are very good at what you do. I really appreciate how, in one day, on my 2 acres, I can till my garden, haul things in the loader, then remove everything, drive over my belly mower, and mow the lawn. And only lose 10 minutes switching things over. I love it. And mowing with the one series with a belly mower is fun for me. Lots of blade speed and nimble enough to mow around the house. Now, if I could just stop hooking the blinkers on tree limbs...
You can use a wider flail mower then a rotary cutter, and a flail Does a significantly better job then a rotary cutting with Y blades on it

I have had a different experice with my flail mower, i have a 28 hp compact tractor and using a 5ft flail in heavy grass requires a lower gear and seems to bog the tractor more than my 5 ft rotary cutter.
Makes sense. Lots o mulching goin on inside that mower.
How much would you charge the tower people to mow this if you were being paid by them? 6hours mowing and some travel time. and would your hourly rate be much different if you were using the 3 or 4 series Johnny and the 10-foot batwing mower. This video was great example of the seat time you can have if mowing your own property or the same time earning a living.

I have only owned a bunch of belly mower garden tractors and now B2601. I do only smaller yards with grass sometimes that tall. I really don’t have to many problems with using just that. I was wondering is there an advantage to a rotary cutter vs belly mower? Other than getting under trees. Having a rotary cutter for that would be great.
Rotary cutter is built stronger. The blade mechanism is totally different, with swing away blades. Much less risk of damaging the gearbox. Especially in the kubota MMM which have the center blade directly attached to the gearbox. (Deere belt drives all 3 blades).
Additionally, rotary cutters are equipped with stump jumpers to help the spindle ride over larger obstacles.
These cutters are simply made tougher for mowing larger stuff.

Having 85 acres of sagebrush I want to mow, my 6ft brush hog would take forever. I do want a flex wing mower but they are so expensive.
I have 6.5 acres and a few cows keep it mowed and fertilized for the most part. I shred 2 times a year with an undersized 5’ Ford shredder that is old old. Would like to get a 6’ since that’s width of tractor but cost doesn’t add up for two cuttings a year.
I’m wondering if the HST is cause if heat issue as they’re more setup for stop and goes than constant run? I have gear drive but no temp on hydro so have no clue if it runs cooler or not with hydro.

I found that with the 1026R with a 60D, I could cut a lightly tree'd 10 acre area at top speed 15-20mph in 5 hrs
Now, how do you manage to do that? Isn't the top speed of that tractor only 9 mph when empty on a road?
That's nothing. My 72D on my 1025R can cut it in 1.5 hours at 30mph!!!

Well, the big brush is too large for our flex wing. Some heavy duty flex wings might cut it, but this one won’t…and would need more tractor!

If the flail mower isn't doing it, you are using the wrong hammers. Add a oil cooler for the hydros.
