  • It's been over 10 years since I moved to Bombay and it was about time I told you a little story about it. Here's a small film about how Bombay hit me in the face like a train hurtling down a hill and how I learned to love that train.
If you like it, make your friends, mothers, bais and everyone else watch it. Don't forget to share it with your Bombay friends and say "Omg same!"
Comment below or tweet to me at @kittyzenkane if you want to say nice/nasty things about it.
    By Siddharth Sathyajit,
Shot and edited by: Siddharth Sathyajit/Siddharth Bandal.
Highway/airplane hyperlapses: Aakash Mehta, Ayush Om Wal.
Couldn't have done it without you guys:

    The Bandals,
    Aakash Mehta,
    Ayush Om Wal,

And the incredible people of Bombay who decided it was okay to put themselves in front of my camera,
Also philhellenes - "Science Saved My Soul"

I lived for quite a few years in Mumbai/Bombay. My company had transferred me there. After the first week of my stay in Mumbai I started mulling giving up my job and come back to my hometown Kolkata. What were the reasons. I tried to drive my car from Bandra(W) to Nariman Point everyday. Going was still ok but coming back was a nightmare especially crossing Peddar Road. I tried the local trains but failed to board anyone of them. So I started going by taxi and ended up spending Rs.500 everyday those days (1999). I went to my MD and briefed him and he advised me that this happens to all the people who come from outside Mumbai and said that I should spend at least two months there and take a call on that again. In these two months I got used to traveling by local trains, bumper to bumper driving, getting trapped in water clogged roads, walking on Mumbai footpath. Next I found myself in a position from where I could take off professionally in a huge manner and especially for the mission for which I was taken there. I stopped bothering about the day to day hassles. My achievements started happening almost on a daily basis. I used to live alone as my family was in y hometown but still I wouldn't find time for myself. Eventually I started liking the city. I started liking the people. Mumbai touched my soul. I became a Mumbaikar. In those few years I reached the peak success of my professional life. The mission was accomplished. Eventually the day came when I was to be released from Mumbai. I reached the airport with my luggage early in the morning and was waiting in the departure lounge. When the departure call was made I actually felt as if somebody was telling me "Dude, I will miss you, see you again" i was almost in tears. This why I hate Mumbai and this is why I love Mumbai.

I moved to Mumbai when I was 12 too. But coming to Mumbai meant to me that I finally had the chance to live in a cosmopolitan city. My family saw new people, new lifestyle, and to me a great deal of exposure that my cousins would not have even now after them moving to other big cities themselves.
No, its lot easy living here. My dad used to calculate when I was growing up, if he didn't get transfered to Bombay how much he would be able to save as the lifestyle cost here is so high. He hated the traffic, the filth, the slums and the fact that he was away from his hometown every day. But everytime we went to our hometown he'd get disappointed by how much worse it really is than in his imagination and long to go back home. And go back, we did.
To me, Mumbai stands for equality, opportunity, kindness and endless hope. Unlike our smaller hometowns with people with even smaller minds, Mumbai is where our previous baggage is allowed to be thrown out. I'm not a brahmin or a dalit. I'm not a woman or a man. I'm just a little piece in this giant puzzle, somehow both lost in it yet essential to it.

I can't hate my Mumbai. When I reached in Mumbai I had nothing but my certificates. Soon I got the fruit of my effort. I could
join a company with out any experience. I learned a lot of lessons, which helped me for better job and for a better life. Whenever I fell, someone had there to catch me saying "bhai aisa nahi aisa karo". They called me brother and helped me a lot without expecting anything from me. When I went to Middle-East to join a company, I was one of the well experienced, among the others. Mumbai is my second Mother. I never tried to take my belongings to Mumbai and settle there. I knew it's already crowded and should allow new people like I was, to stay and get enough experience for better life. Now I am proudly living in Kerala. I express my love and gratitude to my mother Mumbai.

so basically he just accepted what Mumbai is. But that doesn't mean living in Mumbai is great. things he hated initially are still there, he just got used to them, and that is not falling in love with the city. I don't get it ,why would he start liking all the hurry and surviving. having time to breathe and REALLY live your life is important. big cities don't offer that. I think dude just gave in.

    • @apoorva8114
      @apoorva8114 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

You cannot talk about "having the time to breathe" if it goes unappreciated. Sure the madness, chaos, crowds and hustle never ends but that's what makes you push forward. Sure taking a break and breathing is gonna give you realisations but what after that? What are you gonna do out of taking a moment? Hell you cannot even appreciate its value without facing a constant push in a big city.
Getting used to it is a way of falling in love. That is what is known as acceptance. You accept what the city has to give. When you fall in love with a human you take their good and bad sides, why not with a city?

Yet another glorified view of Bombay. I grew up here and finally after 18 years I got the chance to move out. And move out I did. Whatever you may say about the 'spirit of Bombay' or how it 'makes us happy while making us miserable', it only does poetic justice to a city where 5% of the people are rolling in cash and the rest try to survive in slums and chawls. 22,000 people/sq km. in mucky pollution is no way to live. These emotional views about Bombay are getting old. Bombay is only about the money. Once the money runs out, so will the people.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am sure you have your reasons for feeling the way you do about Bombay. But this video does an amazing job of expressing the reason why I personally love being in Bombay, or anywhere in India for that matter: the people. I have lived in quite a few different places, but India is the one place where the bright and shiny spirit of the people comes through, and just makes it feel like home. Though I must say, in terms of the money running out and the people leaving, you might be right (I'm sure way back when, people weren't expecting Detroit or Atlantic City to be what they are today). This point can be made about any city in the world. However, how I see it, it's the charm of the people, and what you make of your time there that really that makes a city a unique experience, and gets people to stay.

And about money running out of this city.. It will never be the case as people come here to make money and my city offers it in every field or profession u choose.

For that young boy it was Mumbai, for this adult girl it was Delhi. This video captures so much which, I, in my rant, could never explain.
How poignantly it shows, that yes, it is tough for each person to move out of her/his home town but for few it remains with them. And those few, with their pain, matter! For some exist who, even after leaving behind their home towns, can't find home in the new towns!
Thank you everyone who were a part in the making of this video:)

No where else have I encountered people who are so ready to help. Be it giving directions, picking up a child who fell while running, the auto rickshaw waala who took you in late at night and didn't mind that you were a few rupees short of the fare.. As a woman, Mumbai is the best place to live in. Cheers to Mumbai. Miss you

Absolutely beautiful video. I can totally relate to this - my family moved to Karachi from a small town in Pakistan a long time back initially I hated everything about it the crowd, the noise, the constant hustle & bustle, pollution you name it everything under the sun. Now around 15 odd years later the same guy who loathed this city so much works as a tour guide and travel writer on this city - its weird how with time a city and it's people can grow on you so much. Karachi like most mega cities world over has its fair share of problems but what I learnt to love the most about this city was the resilience of its people to get through every calamity and problem hitting their city together - always with a sense of optimism that tomorrow will be better than today. Albeit I haven't been to Bombay I have a strong feeling from your video that we're pretty similar to one another in general city dynamics - Thank God for the internet. Would love to visit someday though. Sending out lots of love from Pakistan.

Ive been to Bombay once when i was 12 too. And the phrase for the whole experience would be an 'existential crisis'. Also, if you've watched Shawshank Redemption, this is exactly what happens to Brooks. He hates prison, then he gets used to it, and finally he can't stand to leave it. Except you're not institutionalised, you're probably just accustomed to the filth around you cz you're too lazy to do anything besides make a YT video abt it.

I found the people friendly, helpful and civil. One of the things I liked about the city. hahaha. That and that you create your individual life here. There's no neighbour, mohalla, community. There is just you and the people you choose to be with.

I lived in Colaba worked in the Taj hotel, I enjoyed the rain and the local train, I could stand beside the panipuri uncle hold the paper bowl waiting for my turn comfortably, everything was perfect. I dreamed about Bombay so many times, it's a city full of miracles and it was the place where I found out who I really am. When I turned 21 in Bombay, I got an Indian map tattoo on my back. Your video tears me up, I wish one day we could explore the city one time together with our cameras.

Getting out of comfort zone means becoming cheap. Mumbaikars don’t have any comfort zone, peaceful mind and stability. They’re just cheap! Damn cheap and they promote that cheapness so well that it has become a style...Mumbai don’t have any class at all. Even Pune has some. Very few localities in Mumbai is classy. The rest of the Mumbai is just cheap, shitty and old school.

First couple of minutes into the video I was all up in arms to defend Mumbai. But you have put it across very nicely. I am too from Kerala. But I love this city like anything. The cultural diversity and the pace and rythm of this city is unmatched. I have lived in cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Trivandrum. But nothing compares like Mumbai. Every city I lived has its pros and cons. So does Mumbai. But it's not hate worthy. Even the crowded local trains are a rich source of interaction as I got fellow traveler friends whome otherwise I would have never met.

Extremely well made short film. Coming from another short film maker who used to think that I have learnt enough and am ready to move to the big screen ... I stand corrected now ... cos your film is far better than what I have made so far. Yes your film served as ‘higher education’ for me ... thank you Sir!
