i don't think he was surprised. i think he was even very impatient. he said that line with so much excitement and anticipation. and in the beginning when they climbed up the wall there berthold tells reiner that they should just do it now and return to their hometown. he seemed to be waiting for reiner to finally think the same.
@@PeyloBeauty very late, but Bertholdts surprise was justified, he just told Reiner that the jaw and the attack titan were right there, and they could take them by surprise, but Reiners split personality made him commit a huge mistake by spitting everything to Eren, his “soldier” personality and warrior personality got mixed up. It’s shown that it was a mistake by Betholdts surprise and Reiners addition that he didn’t know what he was thinking

Correct, even salt should be really expensive to get. And we’ve seen eren eating weird bread and soup before, and Eren is a son of a famous doctor who treats interior people. He should somewhat had a decent life compared to others in shiganshina. Unlike Armin, who said he eats a loaf of bread for a week or something(i’m not sure though)
If you will go back to season 2 episode 5, when the tower is about to fall and Ymir asked them to ride on her, you can see Berth about to bite his hand and transform. It's a little hint that Berth is a titan shifter.

One of the hints of Reiner and Bertholdt being Titans is when the tower was falling just when Ymir jumped up you can see Bertholdt preparing to bite his hand.

When Ange claimed that Reiner was a titan, I was like, “Wow, he surely guessed it right!” But for a moment, it also hits me like, “Oh no, did he just spoil himself?”. 😂 The community was like, “Nah, it was from the Female Titan’s blood. It has nothing to do with him being a titan.” We did our best to hide it, though. 😂
There are so many cool hints from previous episodes about their identity. My favourite is from the previous episode (2x5) - when Ymir climbs the tower, as it's collapsing, to tell them to hop on her back, there's a quick shot in which you can see Bert about to bite his hand and transform. This show is amazing! I can't wait for you to get through the rest of this season, it's my favourite of them all.
@@Misskanojojo to my knowledge that's the most in your face, "blink and you'll miss it" hint. I've only seen one reactor actually catch that hint before the reveal. Other hints I like: the second end credits for season 1 show Reiner, Bert, Historia and Ymir separated from the others by a wall; Reiner pulling down his hood when fighting Annie after Armin just told everyone to keep their hoods on; and when Bertholdt says Reiner used to be a "warrior", which is the word Annie used to describe herself when her identity was revealed. There are lots more.
@@SachalKhan For me the most blatant one is when Reiner stops Cony from analyzing the situation of that titan in his village (his mom) and saying that Cony didn't hear anything. This moment is where most of reactors I've seen starts suspecting about Reiner. From all reactors I've seen Carlie and Ange were the ones who got suspicious earlier the most, but that's because Ange thought the steam was from Reiner and Ange said she watched again very carefully the scene where Reiner asks Armin about Eren's location, so watching it again with so much attention kinda spoils things.

The scene where the armored titan was holding eren confused me as well my first watch but what happened was the transformation blew off liar reiners left arm. Eren had a perfectly normal transformation just this time around the animation is way better so we get to see muscles ,tendons and veins form.

The casual reveal, the reflection on the water, the windblown *red flag* that flapped and snapped to symbolise Reiner's mind going haywire, the complete silence, the rattling sound of ODM gear from Eren's hands, followed by Reiner's realisation monologue to finally, the syncing of the both titan's transformation and screaming from the OST called YouSeeBIGGIRL/T:T. It was all done perfectly to give us the feeling of shock and betrayal experienced by Eren. To Ange & Carlie, I envy you guys for being able to experience this for the first time. I wish I could wipe the memory of AoT and watch it again. Big thanks to the moderators for keeping them safe. To all viewers, this is how a genuine experience feels like when we don't spoil them anything. Fasten your seatbelt, guys. The ride has begun, and it will be more hectic than ever. @@MikeC-jw1ky I'm afraid you are wrong. Mikasa does not shudder. This has been shown in Season 1, where her body has transformed and become who she is now. She might be hesitant to kill Reiner and Bertholdt as they are her friends, but she does not get nervous. It will also be explained in later seasons why she is who she is now. It is Eren's; he still hasn't recovered from being shocked, knowing there are more enemies out there among their friends other than Annie.

To be honest, the steam thing was true, that was the female's blood on reiner, but he also bled a little. It was a great cover up. And you can see eren busted out of reiner's titan hand when he transformed.
I don't think it was actually Reiner's steam at all, I doubt Annie would risk hurting him like that. But the scene was meant to make you suspect Reiner because how else would he escape that titan? Even Levi would've died at that point.

Ange, about "the female titan's blood", when you came to the conclusion that Reiner was a titan, we were all like.... "Eh, too soon, too soon"!! But it got out of hand a little. Sorry mate!
Yeah, the deflection wasn't so much about you figuring out Reiner, but more that you guessed it right for the wrong reason lol I wished there was a way to steer you to the correct hint, like Annie looking at her hand after Reiner get out, and her immediate reaction afterward to go after another squad of scouts.
The reason why this reveal was so rightfully hyped up and amazing was because it wasn't dramatic, unlike regular plot-twist reveals. Like, any plot-twist reveal is expected to be as dramatic as Annie's reveal of being the Female Titan. But Reiner and Bertholdt's reveal of being the Armored Titan and Colossal Titan respectively was just so... casual. Even in the manga the reveal was just casually written in the corner. That's what makes it so interesting. Instead of a "Oh ho, you have found me out, now you shall die!" kind of reveal like Annie's was, it was more of a "Hey Eren, guess what? I got a funny story for you..." kind of reveal that, which normally isn't how plot-twist reveals are like, as said previously. Overall, the reveal was a 10/10. You can see why we hyped this episode up. But honestly I bet if we didn't this episode would be even more amazing for you guys, so sorry about that lol. This is why Attack on Titan is one of the, if not, best show ever made, and not just spanning to anime.
19:00 they set up the blood evaporating earlier when Levi was introduced, so when you see it on Reiner it's entirely plausible to go "oh, its the blood from him escaping the hand." It COULD be his, but since the steam is coming off his clothes instead of THROUGH his clothes, it's more likely that it was in fact the Female Titan's.
wait, how can you tell the difference between steam coming off his clothes vs coming through his clothes? It would look the same, especially in animation
So now that the big twist is out in the open, this is the part where you can start looking at previous episode footage and getting foreshadowing about this reveal for a long time, and certain things start to make a lot more sense. Ange is really cooking with gas, asking the big questions like "if the titans are previously people, and supposedly all the humans live in the wall, where did they come from?". There's a little thing from the previous episode that gives a hint, where Ymir is looking around the stored food and finds a can of herring and that booze and can read the strange writing that the other scouts can't read. Makes you think. What also makes you think is that herring is an ocean fish, but no one in the walls has heard of the sea.
About 19:55 If you love scenes like that that are devoid of music and are entirely about the characters, I recently finished rewatching the show and I just want to say there is an episode whose first 19 minutes are like that. It's one of those episodes that everyone loves.
To answer your question. reiner was holding eren, who turned titan i think. he grew too big to be cradle by rainer in his hand :P Also , i'm laughing at : - the Steam anger double anime betrayal :P - bert being the collossal catches you off guard right? Many people speculated about the armored titan being reiner for ages, but leaving bert as a silence background character was intentional so they catch you off guard here :D i told you.. .the writer in this show gives u a bone here and there... and then sneaks back into your room at night, steals it, and buries it somewhere else.

As a manga reader, when Isayama dropped this chapter, Reiner's revelation was in the background, he just said it so casually and it was illustrated as if it wasn't a big deal (in the background lmaooo) and they animated it so perfectly here
I love the way this episode is directed. Such a sense of unease up until the reveal from the lack of music, the wind, lingering an extra frame or two on the characters' faces, the slightly awkward interactions... and the LITERAL RED FLAGS on the walls. Something I noticed on this rewatch was that eren's transformation blows up the hand Reiner was holding him in. Good stuff.
Now I can drop it: In the epispde 2x5, when the tower falls down, just take a second look on Berthold! He is holding his hand right in front of his mouth as if he want's to bite into it. This little detail was indeed the moment when I started to suspect Berthold being a titan! (Still I didn't guess him to be the colossal)

26:25 I think you guys missed something here. Remember when Armin first saw Annies titan ? He had a theory where he said that this female titan probably worked together with the armored and collosal titan. He said that she probably baited all the titans to the hole so thats why there were so many titans that day when the walls broke. We already know this informationr but i think you guys missed it because it was just a small moment.
There was one more hint about the Armor Titan that the show didn't explain, for some reason. When Reiner 'attacked' the Female Titan, he first purposefully removed his hood. Why would he do that when it was supposed to protect him? Because he wanted Annie to know it was him, so that she would grasp him in her palm, so that they could exchange information.
Now that the Collosal is out of the box... in the shot where the castle tower is collapsing you can see berthold being ready to bite his own hand to transform as a last resort. Something nobody notices since the shot is so short but shows how much thought was put into this show.
I can finally say this so - I’m on a second rewatch of AoT in years (while also watching Ange and Carlie’s reactions) and there were TONS of suspicious close ups on Reiner, Bert or Annie all the way through the first season. I’m pretty sure we already got the armor and colossal reveal in the manga when the anime was adapted. If anyone had time, do get a rewatch!

Fun fact: The mangaka (author), Hajime Isayama, told Reiner's voice actor to reveal his titan status like he was reading the instructions for a washing machine (or something similar). It was clearly the correct choice because EVERYONE gets tripped up by that scene.
I love the mournful music that plays as the visages of the titans flash across their faces just before they transform. It captures the moment perfectly. It's not just a huge reveal, not just a betrayal. It's a tragedy.

Regarding Bertholt, people tend to forget that when they graduated he was part of the top 5. 1st Mikasa, then Reiner, Bertholt, Annie, and then Eren. There were very little crumbs pointing to Bertholt being a traitor. Now we're getting deeper into the plot. 😁
Remember that Bert finished in the top 3 ahead of Eren & Annie during their cadet training so he is pretty strong & capable despite his social appearance. Whenever he was on the screen he was often paired with Reiner, the foreshadowing runs even deeper than that..

If you will go back to season 2 episode 5, when the tower is about to fall and Ymir asked them to ride on her, you can see Berth about to bite his hand and transform. It's a little hint that Berth is a titan shifter.

There are so many cool hints from previous episodes about their identity. My favourite is from the previous episode (2x5) - when Ymir climbs the tower, as it's collapsing, to tell them to hop on her back, there's a quick shot in which you can see Bert about to bite his hand and transform. This show is amazing! I can't wait for you to get through the rest of this season, it's my favourite of them all.

Other hints I like: the second end credits for season 1 show Reiner, Bert, Historia and Ymir separated from the others by a wall; Reiner pulling down his hood when fighting Annie after Armin just told everyone to keep their hoods on; and when Bertholdt says Reiner used to be a "warrior", which is the word Annie used to describe herself when her identity was revealed. There are lots more.
@@SachalKhan For me the most blatant one is when Reiner stops Cony from analyzing the situation of that titan in his village (his mom) and saying that Cony didn't hear anything. This moment is where most of reactors I've seen starts suspecting about Reiner.
From all reactors I've seen Carlie and Ange were the ones who got suspicious earlier the most, but that's because Ange thought the steam was from Reiner and Ange said she watched again very carefully the scene where Reiner asks Armin about Eren's location, so watching it again with so much attention kinda spoils things.

The scene where the armored titan was holding eren confused me as well my first watch but what happened was the transformation blew off liar reiners left arm. Eren had a perfectly normal transformation just this time around the animation is way better so we get to see muscles ,tendons and veins form.

Ladies and gentlemen, here we are again. We are thrilled and excited to witness our fellow AoT comrades having to experience one of the best, if not the best mind-blowing scene of all time.
The casual reveal, the reflection on the water, the windblown *red flag* that flapped and snapped to symbolise Reiner's mind going haywire, the complete silence, the rattling sound of ODM gear from Eren's hands, followed by Reiner's realisation monologue to finally, the syncing of the both titan's transformation and screaming from the OST called YouSeeBIGGIRL/T:T. It was all done perfectly to give us the feeling of shock and betrayal experienced by Eren.
To Ange & Carlie, I envy you guys for being able to experience this for the first time. I wish I could wipe the memory of AoT and watch it again. Big thanks to the moderators for keeping them safe. To all viewers, this is how a genuine experience feels like when we don't spoil them anything.

She might be hesitant to kill Reiner and Bertholdt as they are her friends, but she does not get nervous. It will also be explained in later seasons why she is who she is now.
It is Eren's; he still hasn't recovered from being shocked, knowing there are more enemies out there among their friends other than Annie.

To be honest, the steam thing was true, that was the female's blood on reiner, but he also bled a little. It was a great cover up.
And you can see eren busted out of reiner's titan hand when he transformed.
I don't think it was actually Reiner's steam at all, I doubt Annie would risk hurting him like that. But the scene was meant to make you suspect Reiner because how else would he escape that titan? Even Levi would've died at that point.

Yeah, the deflection wasn't so much about you figuring out Reiner, but more that you guessed it right for the wrong reason lol I wished there was a way to steer you to the correct hint, like Annie looking at her hand after Reiner get out, and her immediate reaction afterward to go after another squad of scouts.
@@CarlieAndAnge Honestly, from Reiner's genuine-looking (in this episode) shock of having been near death twice, I think Annie did squeeze him.
The reason why this reveal was so rightfully hyped up and amazing was because it wasn't dramatic, unlike regular plot-twist reveals. Like, any plot-twist reveal is expected to be as dramatic as Annie's reveal of being the Female Titan. But Reiner and Bertholdt's reveal of being the Armored Titan and Colossal Titan respectively was just so... casual. Even in the manga the reveal was just casually written in the corner. That's what makes it so interesting. Instead of a "Oh ho, you have found me out, now you shall die!" kind of reveal like Annie's was, it was more of a "Hey Eren, guess what? I got a funny story for you..." kind of reveal that, which normally isn't how plot-twist reveals are like, as said previously.
Overall, the reveal was a 10/10. You can see why we hyped this episode up. But honestly I bet if we didn't this episode would be even more amazing for you guys, so sorry about that lol. This is why Attack on Titan is one of the, if not, best show ever made, and not just spanning to anime.

19:00 they set up the blood evaporating earlier when Levi was introduced, so when you see it on Reiner it's entirely plausible to go "oh, its the blood from him escaping the hand." It COULD be his, but since the steam is coming off his clothes instead of THROUGH his clothes, it's more likely that it was in fact the Female Titan's.
wait, how can you tell the difference between steam coming off his clothes vs coming through his clothes? It would look the same, especially in animation

So now that the big twist is out in the open, this is the part where you can start looking at previous episode footage and getting foreshadowing about this reveal for a long time, and certain things start to make a lot more sense.
Ange is really cooking with gas, asking the big questions like "if the titans are previously people, and supposedly all the humans live in the wall, where did they come from?". There's a little thing from the previous episode that gives a hint, where Ymir is looking around the stored food and finds a can of herring and that booze and can read the strange writing that the other scouts can't read. Makes you think.
What also makes you think is that herring is an ocean fish, but no one in the walls has heard of the sea.
The symbolism, the cinematography, their reactions, the emotions, the tension and the music. This is peak AOT right here.

Idk really, it probably stems of how I experienced Season 1 of the Anime, at that time I was in into a Different Genre of Anime and my Head space was probably a bit Prejudiced when I saw how Immature and Naive the MC was at sometimes, it's the same thing when I first saw Guilty Crown, Accel World, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, all Great fucking Anime with the down side of their MC's in my eyes back then and of course now I understand why but I think because I've never given those Show another Watch/Chance the Biases I had just stuck.
That's probably why in my head I don't like AoT that much since I judged it with the same Biases I had back then, even though I've read the Manga of AoT which I find very enjoyable and entertaining but after I caught up in 2017-2018(?) I've never read it ever since, in hind sight because of the Mentality I had back then, it most likely ruined, as what you said one of the Greatest Written shows.
I've seen bits of what's happening in the Last and Current Season of AoT and I would be lying to you if I said that I'm not interested, so yeah that's why I said I'm not the Biggest Fan.

As a manga reader, when Isayama dropped this chapter, Reiner's revelation was in the background, he just said it so casually and it was illustrated as if it wasn't a big deal (in the background lmaooo) and they animated it so perfectly here
I love the way this episode is directed. Such a sense of unease up until the reveal from the lack of music, the wind, lingering an extra frame or two on the characters' faces, the slightly awkward interactions... and the LITERAL RED FLAGS on the walls.
Something I noticed on this rewatch was that eren's transformation blows up the hand Reiner was holding him in. Good stuff.
Now I can drop it: In the epispde 2x5, when the tower falls down, just take a second look on Berthold!
He is holding his hand right in front of his mouth as if he want's to bite into it. This little detail was indeed the moment when I started to suspect Berthold being a titan!
(Still I didn't guess him to be the colossal)

If you don't remember, when Annie was revealed as the female Titan, She said "I've failed as a warrior". So when Berth said to Reiner he used to be a warrior, was an instant reveal they were titans or they have something to do with it.
Mikasa says in episode 7 that she is a warrior. At least dubbed she says warrior, I dont remember id she says Senshin

He had a theory where he said that this female titan probably worked together with the armored and collosal titan. He said that she probably baited all the titans to the hole so thats why there were so many titans that day when the walls broke. We already know this informationr but i think you guys missed it because it was just a small moment.

There was one more hint about the Armor Titan that the show didn't explain, for some reason. When Reiner 'attacked' the Female Titan, he first purposefully removed his hood. Why would he do that when it was supposed to protect him? Because he wanted Annie to know it was him, so that she would grasp him in her palm, so that they could exchange information.
Now that the Collosal is out of the box... in the shot where the castle tower is collapsing you can see berthold being ready to bite his own hand to transform as a last resort. Something nobody notices since the shot is so short but shows how much thought was put into this show.
I can finally say this so - I’m on a second rewatch of AoT in years (while also watching Ange and Carlie’s reactions) and there were TONS of suspicious close ups on Reiner, Bert or Annie all the way through the first season. I’m pretty sure we already got the armor and colossal reveal in the manga when the anime was adapted. If anyone had time, do get a rewatch!

Reiner's line about "fulfilling his duty as a warrior and accept the consequences of his actions" has been stuck in my head since I watched this episode, is such a badass moment but also a bit sad.

Regarding Bertholt, people tend to forget that when they graduated he was part of the top 5. 1st Mikasa, then Reiner, Bertholt, Annie, and then Eren. There were very little crumbs pointing to Bertholt being a traitor. Now we're getting deeper into the plot. 😁
Remember that Bert finished in the top 3 ahead of Eren & Annie during their cadet training so he is pretty strong & capable despite his social appearance. Whenever he was on the screen he was often paired with Reiner, the foreshadowing runs even deeper than that..
This was the episode I started to feel sorry for Reiner, seems like he have a lot of psychological issues, hurts to watch.
