We don’t realize that Reiner knows more than he lets on since we’re so focused on Ymir. It’s pretty genius. A foreshadow hidden behind a foreshadow.

When I first saw it, I thought for a minute that I had accidentally gotten one of those joke subs where the subbers would place bullshit in the dialogue. But nope, all real.

When Reiner said that he was surrounded by idiots, it's said in a friendly way. He got attached to his new friends, but had to complete his "duty". That dialogue is so sad

Reiner felt so guilty for what he was doing that he had to create this "bigger brother" facade to make him feel good about himself. It was a coping mechanism. That moment where he's owning up to betraying these new people and admitting he's (in his own words) "a half-ass piece of s**t" lol is an eye opening yet confusing piece of dialogue for people initially. Whilst also having disgust for them for his own reasons, hence why he called them idiots lol.
Sasha saying "Annie said she likes sweets which I thought was weird" is actually a pretty good observation by Sasha. Those in the Outer rings of the walls were farmers and hunters. It's unlikely that Annie would have ever tasted a sweet in her life unless she was lying about where she was from
Farmers, country people, poor people - know what sweets are. Farmers are literally the ones who are making the sweets - milk, fruit, sugar, fat etc. Those come from a farm. They might not be eating fancy sweets like the rich people in the interior but they still have pies, cakes or simple candy.

Then there are people like me who say 'Ok, so they're not from within the walls, so there is another civilization outside, and apparently they are titan shifters and don't consider themselves humans... and their fixation on Eren came after his reveal. Does this mean these Titan shifters are the dominant species outside the walls and the dumb titans are minions gone awry? No, not enough information for that, they get attacked by the Titans too. Is Eren actually of their 'nation' and Grisha was an exile? We have no backstory on him... was this insane war all Grisha's fault?'

I remember watching this scene being anime only and not spoiled for the first time. That scene was so damn tense. Probably one of the best transformations in all of anime. The cherry on top was Eren calling them traitors and turning too.
The most important thing in this show is a character's eyes. Even if they're not saying anything, if you look at their eyes it tells you everything they're feeling in that moment.
"If I only never knew that there were people like this, i wouldn't have turn a half piece of shit." Actually this line was kind a sad. Bertolt, annie and reiener's mission is to complete doom for the people in the walls but they got attach to their comrades that made them to holdback on their mission and hesitate to finish their mission.
Without getting into spoilers, it's crystal clear at this point that all three of them betray themselves when it comes to fulfilling their mission. Reiner convinces Eren to just keep moving forward until he can wipe out all the Titans. There's no actual reason to do that. He also saves Connie legitimately, and legit has feelings for Historia/Christa. Bertholdt was the one who helped Eren learn the ODM gear enough to advance to the scouts. Annie, while the coldest of the three, very clearly had a soft spot for Armin. And if Armin hadn't survived their first or second encounters as the Female Titan, then her identity wouldn't have been revealed. But she didn't even come out and say she should've killed him.... She just asked herself why.
Well technically, their is another reason they didn't just destroy everything yet, even if they didn't get attached to people. Anyway, that's why you don't send kids to do a mission like this.

During that female titan chase, Armin got the idea to wear their cape, since he assume this intelligent titan is seeking Eren. A nice detail, when Reiner came in to "fight" the female titan, he opened up his cape first and made sure Annie saw him.
This always reminds me of a story about an American soldier who went undercover and ended up pushing an iraqi insurgent off a cliff and he even said he could see the confusion on his eyes when he fell. War truly is hell.
That scene is one of my favorite scenes to watch in dub, because people actually literally miss what Reiner says, because it's portrayed so casually. It makes you have a double take, especially if you don't have subs to read to confirm what was just said!
Was so revolutionary about this episode/chapter is that it doesn’t follow the norms about plot twist. Normally it you would have a build up with a big reveal but Reiner just casually reveal he’s the armor in a background conversation. It’s always funny seeing people react to it.
In Japanese, Bertholt told Reiner "what are talking about?" instead of " why are you telling to Eren." That's casually translated part for a crucial moment.

When they were fighting the Female titan, she started to walk towards Eren the second Reiner broke free. 2. When Annie's identity was revealed, when she was about to turn into a titan in front of Eren, Armin and Mikasa, she said "I have failed as a *Warrior* ". When Reiner saved Connie from that Titan, Connie asked Bert "Has Reiner always been like this?" And Bert said "No, he used to be more of a warrior in the past, unlike now." (Also the name of this episode is Warrior) 3. In the same episode of point 2, they showed a flashback of Reiner and Bert showing Ymir's titan eating one of their friends but, don't you think it's a bit strange that some random kids were casually wandering outside the walls?? 4. Also, Reiner kinda looks like the Armoured Titan ngl lol the hair is way too similar

This is always the episode I’m hyped to see the moment I see a new channel’s first episode come out. Absolutely monumental. It’s so confusing at first but coming back to it after watching the rest of the show, its such a huge “aha” moment and an entirely different but equally enjoyable experience.
For us westerners that watched that show with subs , that scene was awesome... all of us had that same feeling breaking the 4th 5th and 6th wall... asking to ourself...nahh that was an error in translation here in the real world or i missed something here in the real world...!! but then we do realize that what we read was indeed what was supposed to read. That feeling would have not be the same if we hear it in english.
There's a scene in season 1 where during the training arc, they talk about the titans that showed up at shiganshina. When you watch that the first time, you don't notice it, but after this episode, it's clear that it was done on purpose: the "camera" switched to Reiner and Berthold right at that moment.
I don't think anyone watched this episode without being absolutely mindblown. Even with people who suspected them or predicted it, the delivery of it throws everyone off completely without fail 😂
15:07 One thing that’s always bothered me so much is the translation here. Bertholdt never said “why are you telling him?” when grabbing Reiner’s arm. The accurate translation is “what are you saying?”. Saying “why are you telling him?” is basically confirming the scout’s suspicion which would have been a clown ass move 🥴 some of the translations for the subs for this show are kinda whack
The symbolism of the post breaking in that scene is to show how high the tension is. The scouts are aware of who the possible titans are and Reiner and Bert are deciding to make a last ditch effort.Reiner has had enough and he's slipping through personality disorder that he just casually drops his plan to eren.The moment that post snaps and echoes shows how tense both parties are in this final exchange.
still one of the craziest reveals in anime ever, and it only gets crazier from here (something that the show does amazingly is the foreshadowing, it's INSANE) ooo also aot is the anime that has the most episodes to be highly rated in imdb next to breaking bad and ofc this episode is one of them
One of my favourite things about rewatching AOT is seeing all of the little nuggets of foreshadowing towards Bertholdt and Reiner being the Colossal and Armored Titan. They seem so inconsequential on first watch, but once you know to look for them it's crazy how many little hints and signs there are pointing to them.
In Episode 5 of Season 2 if you look closely when they are on top of the tower before Ymir jumps off you can see that Berthold was doing a pose where he was about to bite his hand to turn.
this episode remains monumental. after years still, the music goes underneath and binds the revelation of this episode. This series... is one of the best.
To this day, it’s still one of the most hype reveals in almost all of anime. I think what shocks us as viewers the most is how casually Reiner talks about the truth they’ve been searching for for so long. Craziness. The entire speech Reiner gives here is incredible when considering the context of the later seasons. Like I love so much that looking at this when it came out, I was like "WTF Reiner and Bertholdt!", whereas now I'm like, "ya know what, damn bro no you got dealt a really bad hand, someone give this man a hug"
I had a feeling something not right when Reiner escaped from the Female Titan. I thought "Oh well. It's an anime magic" and ignored that feeling. The writer knows how people see a show🙂
Here is a small detail most people miss but its subtle and I think you guys would enjoy. Remember back to the previous episode I think when Bertholdt and the gang were being over run by titans and Ymir was climbing the tower. If you look at Bertholdt you can see hes about to bite his hand to transform.
"The hometown that we lost" - Reiner Reiner has a split personality disorder, he was in his 2nd persona - who actually believed he was born & raised within the wall, which was destroyed by titans 5 years ago; but was actually him. Those were Eren's memories of Reiner & how clueless & deceived he mustve felt.
ATTENTION NEEDED !!! If you go on the previous episode, you can see Bertholdt about to transform ( bite his hand ) when Ymir is crashing the tower and they're about to fall. It's Christa, Reiner and Bertholdt on the screentime.
I remember when I got to that scene when they were casually talking I was switching between my phone screen and my monitor so I didn't catch everything they said and I was mad confused later when this shit got down. I also thought for like legit the rest of the season that Reiner was the Collosal and Berthold the Armored Titan. But after this episode AoT had me in his grasp and I'm convinced AoT is one of the best stories ever told.
The flag pole snapping is representative of Reiner finally snapping between his two personalities of being a soldier (human form) and a warrior (titan form).
So I was completely spoiled about the colossal titans shifter and was pretty bummed about it. YET THE REVEAL STILL CAUGHT ME OFF GAURD WITH A DOUBLE TAKE, respect to the writing for being able to still deliver that punch!
There are plenty of signs in previous episodes showing them together with Anny or being going to transform (in a previous episode) and other. But you won't even notice before you know the truth. It makes rewatching the show more fun.
If you go back an episode to where Ymir goes to the top of the tower to save the group, you can see the Bertolt assumed a position to turn into the colossal. He was about to bite his hand to get out of the situation but in the end did not have to because Ymir came to save them.
The sentence meant that Reiner and Bertholdt were there with the cadets for too long and him calling them idiots is just a way to say that they were deceived by Reiner as he’s the armored titan but the more important part is him saying that he didn’t know that there were people LIKE THAT (good people) and that if he had knew he wouldn’t have done the horrible deeds that he did
Some people knew very rare amount of viewers knew. But I think what threw people off guard, is Bertholdt being the Colossal Titan because Bertholdt is always quiet but the Colossal is known as destructive.

Was so revolutionary about this episode/chapter is that it doesn’t follow the norms about plot twist. Normally it you would have a build up with a big reveal but Reiner just casually reveal he’s the armor in a background conversation. It’s always funny seeing people react to it.

25:31 There were a few hints that if you are REALLY paying attention, you would know Reiner is the Armoured Titan.
1. When they were fighting the Female titan, she started to walk towards Eren the second Reiner broke free.
2. When Annie's identity was revealed, when she was about to turn into a titan in front of Eren, Armin and Mikasa, she said "I have failed as a *Warrior* ". When Reiner saved Connie from that Titan, Connie asked Bert "Has Reiner always been like this?" And Bert said "No, he used to be more of a warrior in the past, unlike now." (Also the name of this episode is Warrior)
3. In the same episode of point 2, they showed a flashback of Reiner and Bert showing Ymir's titan eating one of their friends but, don't you think it's a bit strange that some random kids were casually wandering outside the walls??
4. Also, Reiner kinda looks like the Armoured Titan ngl lol the hair is way too similar
3. It doesn’t necesserarily mean that they were outside the walls, it could be that the titan or human has infiltrated the walls, that they were searching for something were the wall was broken or that someone has turned a titan near their hometown and so on…

This is always the episode I’m hyped to see the moment I see a new channel’s first episode come out. Absolutely monumental. It’s so confusing at first but coming back to it after watching the rest of the show, its such a huge “aha” moment and an entirely different but equally enjoyable experience.
If you watch the last couple episodes, they are FILLED with foreshadowings of this scene.
For us westerners that watched that show with subs , that scene was awesome... all of us had that same feeling breaking the 4th 5th and 6th wall... asking to ourself...nahh that was an error in translation here in the real world or i missed something here in the real world...!! but then we do realize that what we read was indeed what was supposed to read. That feeling would have not be the same if we hear it in english.

There's a scene in season 1 where during the training arc, they talk about the titans that showed up at shiganshina. When you watch that the first time, you don't notice it, but after this episode, it's clear that it was done on purpose: the "camera" switched to Reiner and Berthold right at that moment.
I don't think anyone watched this episode without being absolutely mindblown. Even with people who suspected them or predicted it, the delivery of it throws everyone off completely without fail 😂

Bertholdt never said “why are you telling him?” when grabbing Reiner’s arm. The accurate translation is “what are you saying?”.
Saying “why are you telling him?” is basically confirming the scout’s suspicion which would have been a clown ass move 🥴 some of the translations for the subs for this show are kinda whack

The symbolism of the post breaking in that scene is to show how high the tension is. The scouts are aware of who the possible titans are and Reiner and Bert are deciding to make a last ditch effort.Reiner has had enough and he's slipping through personality disorder that he just casually drops his plan to eren.The moment that post snaps and echoes shows how tense both parties are in this final exchange.
Love gingers theories really thinking outside of the box, will come in useful for the later seasons
Fun fact: if you rewatch the tower collapse last episode,you can see bertholdt almost biting his hand (fearing to be dead soon) to transform
still one of the craziest reveals in anime ever, and it only gets crazier from here (something that the show does amazingly is the foreshadowing, it's INSANE)

One of my favourite things about rewatching AOT is seeing all of the little nuggets of foreshadowing towards Bertholdt and Reiner being the Colossal and Armored Titan. They seem so inconsequential on first watch, but once you know to look for them it's crazy how many little hints and signs there are pointing to them.

In Episode 5 of Season 2 if you look closely when they are on top of the tower before Ymir jumps off you can see that Berthold was doing a pose where he was about to bite his hand to turn.

Remember back to the previous episode I think when Bertholdt and the gang were being over run by titans and Ymir was climbing the tower. If you look at Bertholdt you can see hes about to bite his hand to transform.

I remember when I got to that scene when they were casually talking I was switching between my phone screen and my monitor so I didn't catch everything they said and I was mad confused later when this shit got down. I also thought for like legit the rest of the season that Reiner was the Collosal and Berthold the Armored Titan. But after this episode AoT had me in his grasp and I'm convinced AoT is one of the best stories ever told.
The flag pole snapping is representative of Reiner finally snapping between his two personalities of being a soldier (human form) and a warrior (titan form).

So I was completely spoiled about the colossal titans shifter and was pretty bummed about it. YET THE REVEAL STILL CAUGHT ME OFF GAURD WITH A DOUBLE TAKE, respect to the writing for being able to still deliver that punch!
There are plenty of signs in previous episodes showing them together with Anny or being going to transform (in a previous episode) and other. But you won't even notice before you know the truth. It makes rewatching the show more fun.

If you go back an episode to where Ymir goes to the top of the tower to save the group, you can see the Bertolt assumed a position to turn into the colossal. He was about to bite his hand to get out of the situation but in the end did not have to because Ymir came to save them.

The sentence meant that Reiner and Bertholdt were there with the cadets for too long and him calling them idiots is just a way to say that they were deceived by Reiner as he’s the armored titan but the more important part is him saying that he didn’t know that there were people LIKE THAT (good people) and that if he had knew he wouldn’t have done the horrible deeds that he did
Some people knew very rare amount of viewers knew. But I think what threw people off guard, is Bertholdt being the Colossal Titan because Bertholdt is always quiet but the Colossal is known as destructive.
