  • The ruin of Doriath was the ultimate conclusion of dooms, curses, and oaths coming into that Elven Kingdom of the Silmarillion. From the tales of Húrin and his family to the greed of Dwarves and the fire of the sons of Fëanor, Doriath and its king Thingol met their final fates during the First Age of Middle-earth. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the ruin of Doriath in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

Hey everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the video! I wanted to add that in 473 of the First Age, the Havens of the Falas were besieged and captured by Morgoth's forces. This was the same year that Túrin arrived in Doriath. Brithombar and Eglarest were destroyed and Barad Nimras were cast down. Thanks, if I come across more that I missed in this video, I'll add it here!

Is it possible that Maedhros maybe more tragic then Turin because he tried to be honorable and friendly with the people of Middle Earth and tried calming his brothers but the Oath he took always took that opportunity from him and in end he ended up committing mass murder and losing everything for nothing. That is pretty tragic because he lived for hundreds of years.

    • @MenoftheWest

I like to think that Maglor was spared such a fate and will eventually be pardoned- but Maedhros' tale reeks of tragedy. At the end, when Eönwë simply allowed him to take the Silmarils, it was as if the maia knew what would come of it, and allowed it to end his wholly tragic life to spare him further sorrow.

As a admittedly biased dwarf guy, you know what always struck me in this story? Naugladur, king of the Dwarves of Nogrod. Despite being very minor in the overall Silmarillion as a whole, he even gets to be a tragic character by being led astray into invading Doriath out of blind trust in what his Dwarves said to him, then annihilates Doriath, kills the mighty Mablung, *nearly beats Beren, one of the best warrior of his age, in single combat* and with his dying breath cursed the gold and brought ruin to Doriath. Fascinating little character.
Kudos for the awesome content! Keep it up!

Always felt pity for Hurin and his kin, it is probably truly the most tragic tales, ironically it later inspired the first Suikoden game (which was my first brush with the fantasy genre at 5 years old), with Thingol's tale one of my favourites alongside Hurin and Turin's tales. Thanks for this excellent video, re-watching this playlist as I write my own Anglo-Saxon tale inspired by Beowulf & Ivanhoe two of my favourite childhood stories that my father and mother used to read to me as a boy.

It's sad and tragic story but imagine how devasted Húrin was?
He saw the easterlings betrayal, he fought so long that everyone of his men were killed around him (including his brother Huòr). He basically watched all the hopes of Beleriand die around him. Then he was dragged to Morgoth and tortured, and when Morgoth couldn't break him,he was placed on a seat where he had to watch as the curse of Morgoth ruined his family. After the death of his children he was "released". Nobody wanted to see him in Dor-Lomin, Turgon didn't take him to Gondolin and when he finally met his wife in Brethil, she died. Having lost everything and everyone he wen't to pay Thingol for the care his children had gotten in Doriath. In Menegroth Melian lifted the shadow of Morgoth from him and he understood how badly he had been influenced and what he had done. He gave Thingol and Melian his respect. Thanked them truthfully and left. Having lost his will to live he went and drowned himself in the western sea.
Húrin Thalion has allways been one of my favorite characters.

In the books, he had been held by the elves of Mirkwood after escaping Mordor, and, after escaping them, had entered Moria from east entrance. He couldn't figure out how to get past the western doors, so he just happened to be there when the Fellowship entered. He got out like the orcs who tracked the Fellowship did - the bridge wasn't the only way to the east entrance, only the most direct.

King Edward "Longshanks" I, Hammer of the Scots, Lord of Wales and King of England That is a great question! Honestly, I’ve never been entirely sure either. He couldn’t have known they would have gone through Moria, so to have been there before them would have been odd. The West Gate became blocked after the Watcher. From what I can tell, he entered from the East side, and caught up with the Fellowship inside of Moria, for he did not have the ability to even open the Doors of Durin even if they were unblocked.

I've always head people tell me LOTR was Tolkien's only great work, only true aficionados know the Silmarillion is arguably better. The Children of Hurin, The Lay of Beren and Luthien, and the entire Quenta Silmarillion is a true masterpiece. A war doomed from the beginning, fought against insurmountable odds and against an unbeatable foe.

I'm realizing the elves have pretty much the same temptation to the silmarills that men had to the ring, and it's less forgiveable since they were pure light, something coveted, and their own greed drove them to do horrors. But men had no possible power to overcome saurons ring, him being a mayar, you really can't blame them, but the elves hold most of the blame. Adds an amazing layer to the elves who always seemed so perfect and noble in the final years of their reign, but we get to see how even the first born children were flawed, and all the better for it in the end

He was not, as he spoke with his wife, when she 'chided' him for being gone for so long he replied that he came, as best he could. While he cared those horror's he never bent to Morgoth or any others...
