Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed the video! My apologies about calling spiders insects. I should have said arthropod. I believe Neekerbreekers are also arthropods as well! My mistake! Let me know if there are any others and I'll try to amend them here! I also wanted to say that I didn’t add the Beornings as they were men with the gift of skin changing, and they were not actual animals themselves. But Vampires and Werewolves (besides when Sauron shape shifted into them) seem to be actual beasts within Tolkien’s works. To me it seems like Vampires are large bats and Werewolves are large wolves, and both have evil spirits within them.

Hey Men of the West, this was a great video. The animals play a big part in the story, but usually aren't talked about. Thank you for giving them their credit. I also want to ask, could you please do a Theory video on the three Elvin rings? Like what if they never lost their powers after the one ring was destroyed.

That was a big point to make, Smaugs weakness revealed by a bird. I enjoyed learning that the peoples animal allies were not what you would expect. They seemed (on the surface) not nearly powerful enough, but, as MOTW revealed to us, the information they provided was vital. I wonder if Tolkien got this idea from birds used in WW1.

When they make movie adaptations they do it for the masses. This means making a palatable world that a person totally new to LOTR or even fantasy general can follow and ideally avoid a "wtf thats stupid" sort reaction. Alot of the odd ball details in stories are dropped out right, I would have been surprised to see the thrush clue bard in.

From the early versions of the Hobbit, we can be quite sure that they were meant to be Chinese-style dragons. Tolkien eventually removed his reference to China and all other real world places in a revision, so no trace of this original description is found in the published Hobbit. Worm in Tolkien's writings often means dragon, so it makes complete sense that "were-worms of the east" are a kind of dragon inspired by eastern cultures.

@@MenoftheWest Thank you, Yoystan! I happen to be a pretty big of The Lord of the Rings too. Particularly for the film adaptations of it. When I first started reading the Silmalilarion, I was getting quite confusing about the main plot of the story. There were so many words in this book I couldn't read or pronounce right, there were various of perspectives that it goes through with so many cool characters involved. I'm also a slow reader as well, which makes the book even a little more harder for me to understand the story carefully. Great video! I was kinda waiting for you to mention Fastitocalon (gigantic sea turtle), but then again it's just a story, and not confirmed to really exist in Middle-Earth. I just recently learned that Fastitocalon is not Tolkien's own creation, but it is a monster from an old english poem. Tolkien implemented the creature (and the name) into the lore of Middle-Earth by making his own poem, which was well-known by the hobbits. I like the theory this giant turtle is not an actual living creature, but an allegory for of the fall of Numenor.

you should of spoken about what made the rohirrim horse so unique and formidable. the were trained by the people of Rohan and became wise horses like trained dogs. so when you fought a rohirrim rider, you fought the rider and the horse. they had a lifelong bond the rider and the horse growing up. the both learned to fight together. the horse would actually fight and take lead in battle. exactly why the archers for the people of Rohan were so skilled on horse back as the horse who ride around and fight and make key moves adjustments in battle and all the rider had to do was focus on his Bow and shoot well till he was out. the riders of Rohan were among the most elite warriors as simple men go as you fought both the horse and the rider. a bit much yes. but so cool the neat lore. they bred and trained them for battle to protect the country side farms and be ready for war in case.

They're as amazing and majestic as they are large and terrifying 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

Middle Earth sounds more like a mythology than a fictional universe, I mean these creatures and enviroments are no monster hunter monsters level of coolness and detail but they do have a very strong mythological and mysterious feel to them.

That was Tolkien's intention. He was disappointed at the fact that England didn't have a mythology of its own, so he set out to create one himself.

For further reference on the subject of Tolkien's mythic beasts I would recommend the book A Tolkien Bestiary ( ISBN O-345-28283-3 )by David Day published by Ballantine Books in New York in 1979. I was able to find it on Amazon.

    • @iarwain8584

I highly recommend avoiding anything written by David Day like the plague. He doesn't research anything and just makes stuff up. Hell, he couldn't even get the maps right. Even worse is the fact that he just released the same book under different titles, which is downright greedy.
One Tolkien scholar once said: _In Tolkien scholarship the worst insult one could deliver at any point for many years was equivalent to 'That sounds like something David Day wrote'._ For more accurate reviews, check his page on the Tolkien Gateway.

-There was a comment by someone once about the evolution or prehistoric nature of the fell beasts, how they were dinosaur-like creatures lasting in the modern age. You ever explored this in a video?

Huan was probably most noble of all good creatures. We have Lúthien - said to be most beautifull of all the Children of Ilúvatar and Beren one of the most greatest mens ever lived. They love was legendary. I believe these two with Huan as they loyal friend and protector beeing veery happy trio :) Each of these characters is unmistakable, unique and all had deep affection for eachother. Is like beeing in ideal relationship with him/her + having great dog only maaany times smarter/ loyal and badass ^_^

You should do a “what if” on Gollum, what if Gollum found salvation and decided to become good instead of become full Gollum and lose his alter ego “smeagol”
