  • Hi everyone,
I received an order of Vallejo Xpress Colors in the post today and wanted to try them out on some Napoleonic French. I picked a plastic Perry line grenadier (1807-1814) and recorded my first try with them. I have compared the finish with some GW Contrast painted miniatures for you to see as well. Please share your thoughts.
    Paints used in video:
    Prime Colour Forge Matt White
    Vallejo XPress Color Omega Blue
    Vallejo XPress Color Dwarf Skin
    Vallejo XPress Color Space Grey
    Vallejo XPress Color Black Lotus
    Vallejo XPress Color Copper Brown
    Vallejo XPress Color Wasteland Brown
    Vallejo XPress Color White Templar
    Vallejo XPress Color Plasma Red
    Vallejo Model Color Brass
    Army Painter Platemail Metal
P.S. I bought mine from Pendraken miniatures. I said in the video that off the top of my head, GW Contrast paints are £4.50 a pot... the RRP with GW is £4.75 (18ml) but 3rd party retailers sell for less. Xpress Color (18ml) are £2.95 at Pendraken.

Hey man thanks for this. All the videos I've seen for these have either been wacky scifi schemes or fantasy ones. Great seeing how useful these would be for historicals.

Thanks for the video Rory, useful Intel. Hoping to pick some of them up when they become available in Australia.

Exactly that - one coat paints allow for quick results where quantity matters more than quality!

Interesting review. I think you have got some good results with the Vallejo considering the fairly limited range at present. On the other hand though, you are a very good painter😊

Ha! Thanks very much. I really hope the range expands soon as there is a lot of gaps in the line currently.

Thanks for the review . It helps make decisions. I still think the "white" version are just confusing everyone. Might as well use a Light grey wash. I am working through some 1804 Victrix French atm using part Contrast and Vallejo washes and will look at grabbing a few as they run out

Yeah, no one has really nailed the "white". I think something darker in the recesses and around straps is needed to make whites stand out across a tabletop.

The thinned Black Lotus looks like a Payne's Gray oil wash.

You know, I have never used a Payne's Gray wash. I imagine that an oil wash is easier to control and wipe off than this stuff though.

That looked good although im not a napoleonic fan so not sure how it should have looked if different?.Anything that makes painting figure hell quicker and easier is fine with me.

For churning out models they will definitely do the job. Hopefully the range will increase soon, as it is crying out for another slate grey and a warm off white for Napoleonics (and others of course1!).

Very interesting Rory. Thinking in terms of a comparison with AP speed paints, did you find the paint reconstituted itself if you paint over it with normal acrylic?

Didn't notice any reactivation with the metallic layer that went on. Need to test highlighting and washing next to be completely sure, but it is looking good. I was put off the AP Speed Paints when I heard they reactivated I must say.

Interesting. The AP really do reactivate as well. Have heard leaving it for 24hrs before painting over will work but haven’t tried it yet.

Nice comparison, thanks! Do the Xpress colors reactivate?

      @CullodenPaintingStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

There wasn't any reactivation with the metallics that went on the musket etc. Might need to confirm this with some highlights or washes, but I don't think reactivation is a problem.
