While I was painting the Italian Chasseurs a Cheval for the last video, I also recorded the process I used to base them. I've used 50mm square laser cut MDF bases, Vallejo Earth Texture, grass tufts, flower tufts, and static grass to create the bases for this cavalry unit. Please let me know in the comments how you base your on models. Let's share some techniques and tips! Did you know that I'm...

Hello everyone and welcome to my latest video. As a follow up to painting a light cavalry horse, I have now painted its rider! The 4th Regiment of Italian Chasseurs a Cheval had an unusual violet facing colour and fit into my 1813 Leipzig force so this was a nice treat to do. • @CullodenPaintingStudio

      I think you wouldn't get the full "Xpress Colour" effect but it would thin the acrylic paint in a similar fashion to a glaze medium.

      Might have been down to the atmospheric conditions, but the few times I have spray varnished models with flags, the flags have ended up frosted. My models will end up in cupboards out of direct sunlight (also I live in northern Scotland!) so sun bleaching isn't too much of a worry for me!

    A welcomed video like all of your content! We know time is limited but we would watch these as fast as you could produce them. New camera is great, perhaps a microphone at some point as the volume ebbs and flows a bit. On the flags, any opinion on placing tin/aluminum foil inside the flag to assist in folding and structure? I know some people do this. Keep them coming👍

      @CullodenPaintingStudio 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. Yeah, a microphone would be a good addition to the set up. It's been on my to buy list for a loooong time. I have never done the foil method as I don't have problems with the way I do it. If someone were to print their own flag on thinner paper than the commercial offerings then it might need reinforcing I suppose.

    Great Job! I'm new to wargaming (and painting). I'm just about to base my first ever unit (Belgians), they look awful compared to yours, but if I squint from 5ft away they'll just about pass! I went for mostly Vallejo Model Colour paints, are the "contrast" paints easier for doing the fiddly bits (behind backpacks etc)? Thanks for your videos, I would have been lost without them.

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio
      @CullodenPaintingStudio 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Welcome to the wonderful world of wargaming! Contrast paints do flow easier, but they can be harder to control than regular acrylics. Your Vallejo paints will do fine I am sure. A dark paint will represent the shadowed areas well. The fiddly bits are lost in massed ranks of troops so don't worry too much about them!

    Thanks, very nice. It is close to my process, but I tend to get excited and cover most of the base! I do paint the base edges with a dull green before applying paste, some of the paste gets onto that edge and needs wiping back and this has an overall effect of ‘muckying up’ the base edge, so it looks less pristine. I di prefer your more controlled way of adding grass flock.

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio

    Welcome back! You are one of a few that, to me a beginner, can make a contrast/speed/express paint job look almost as good as regular acrylics. Watching you I have come to the conclusion that it is acrylics for me, at least for now. Two questions for you. As I begin in the hobby the idea of dry brushing highlights seems more approachable than actual painting the highlights. Any suggestions on how best to do that on 18-19th century miniatures? Each color dry brushed or a general dry brush? Being so small a figure I have struggled with that. Second, have you any plans to showcase your talents on a larger scale, in particular 40mm used often in skirmish war gaming. I enjoyed when you said beginner or table top standard. To me your work is museum quality.

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio
      @CullodenPaintingStudio หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words. I think that a general drybrush can work wonders. A warm off white will highlight just about everything. I use Vallejo Game Color Elfic Flesh for this role. I tend to do it after applying the base colours of the uniform and kit, but before metallics as it will rob them of their shine. I will often do it before applying a wash as well, and usually I will go back to tidy up white straps as a matter of course. Sometimes, I will use a spray primer in a colour that does most of the uniform for me, such as a dark green for British 95th Rifles, or a dark blue for French light infantry. I would give things a green/blue drybrush after the primer to add an easy highlight. It is hard to drybrush highlights onto one area only as you have found, so it can be a matter of choosing your battles! I don't have any immediate plans for larger figures, but for a good part of the 00s and 10s I pretty much exclusively painted 54mm sci fi figures for the Games Workshop Inquisitor game, so I have had plenty of practice in the past. Might be a nice challenge to do some big Napoleonic figures one day.

    Love these AWI videos. Question based on your experiences and skill level. As a beginner focused initially on AWI, ACW, Napoleonic, do you believe there is one speed paint better suited to historical between Citadel, AP speed paint 2.0 or Vallejo express?

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio
      @CullodenPaintingStudio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't really answer that truthfully as I haven't used Speedpaint 2.0 outside of a couple of metallics. GW are decent, stable to paint over, but expensive. Vallejo are less expensive, have a less blotchy finish than GW, but as I found out to my shock, reactivate when brush on Winsor and Newton matt varnish is applied! I also feel that as they have to be applied over a light base coat and contained to one area (unless you want to be constantly reapplying the base coat), they aren't perfect for beginners. Once brush control has been established they become a useful tool. I think regular acrylics will always be needed to paint when starting out. Blocking in acrylics plus a wash is a solid foundation to build from.

    Fine work. How would you paint the facings, of they were a colour other than white? Esp. how would you 'whiten' the lace? And how would you paint white hat trim?

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio
      @CullodenPaintingStudio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, thanks for watching. Typically when I am doing facings I will paint the facing colour and then go back over the lace with something like Vallejo Off White. EDIT: Hat trim would be a light grey, such as Vallejo Game Ghost Grey, and then the Off White.

      @@CullodenPaintingStudio Thank you kindly for the advice. I am circling the black hole, that is miniature wargaming, and have yet to decide if I want to jump in or not. The fine videos on painting, such like yours, have been enourmously helpful, so far, taking some of the edge off the fear of having to start with utterly ugly minis. Speaking of mines, I understand a very important part of good mini painting is the quality of molding and modeling on the mini itself. I hase a feeling the details on minis from Warhammer (either variant) and many other fantasy or purely arts based figures seem to be very precisely molded. Many historical figures look like they are not quite as crisply molded. Is that in fact true or am I missing something/looking wrong?

      @CullodenPaintingStudio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lutzderlurch7877 that's a fair comment about the quality of casts. I think that a lot of historical figures are made by very small operations with limited resources using more traditional techniques than quite a few of the fantasy/sci fi manufacturers out there. Even the big ones like Warlord Games and Perry Miniatures are small fry compared to Games Workshop. A few companies are now producing kits that have been created using 3D software (Victrix, Wargames Atlantic) and the difference in quality is improving. There are some stunningly rendered historical kits out there if you know where to look, and some wonderfully characterful figures with charming, if not cutting edge, designs too!

      @@CullodenPaintingStudio I understand the big ones design with 3D technology, then convert to CAD/CAM and machines metal molds with high pressure injection molding? What are the 'trditional' methods? Mildly interested, since I am a pattern maker by trade, so casting, foundry work etc. is still interesting to me. I am leaning towards 7YW and AWI, 28mm, British. So you say I should check out Wargames Atlantic and Victrix?

    • @CullodenPaintingStudio
      @CullodenPaintingStudio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lutzderlurch7877 Perry Miniatures for example sculpt in epoxy putty like greenstuff, and then have some miniatures cast in white metal. They also produce lines in injection moulded plastic - these they sculpt at 3x the regular size ("3 ups") from which steel moulds are tooled via pantograph by Renedra. A lot of the smaller companies are still producing small batches of spin cast metal figures at home or in workshops. It's very much a cottage industry still! For 18th century miniatures you can find AWI in plastic, but I can't think that anyone does SYW. Perry do a comprehensive line of AWI figures. Warlord Games are another option. Victrix and Wargames Atlantic are unfortunately not producing 18th century figures.

    Excellent review as always. Very much enjoy all comparison videos, especially regarding historical miniatures. I enjoyed this one as it coincides fairly well with my desire to paint up AWI Continental Army figures which have uniforms quite similar in color to French infantry from your period. Any other comparisons are very much welcomed to include preferred paint manufacturers for 17th-18th century miniatures. Most creators focus on fantasy so good on you for highlighting historical figures. If you do post a paint comparison then any information on a preferred paint range (of the main line companies like Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter) for beginners would really hit the mark. Thank you for your efforts.

      Thanks for watching this one as well. I do have a very slow burning AWI project on the go. I have been mainly working on militia but have a few continental regiments lined up. I'll be sure to make videos on how I paint them at some point. I think Vallejo are always a solid bet when it comes to painting. Good price and coverage!

    Interesting -- I tried a couple of the washes and didn't like them either. I use the rest of the CDA range a lot: their black is my go-to, the horse tones are good and there's a lot of nice 'military' colours. But the washes I did not get on with; I found them to be uneven at shading. I don't think I tried the one brown that you liked though. I ended up settling on the two Vallejo Game Wash colours that come in 200ml bottles and just use those for everything now...

      I quite like the CDA paints. They are a pretty good replacement for my old tall hex pots of Citadel from the 90s. Shame about these washes! Vallejo are on my list to test out now.
