  • Maybe you encountered the issue that you need to adjust your VND a lot while filming. It can be tedious and sometimes you accidentially smudge your VND when adjusting it.
There is a solution for this. The Tilta Mirage Motorized Matte Box and the SmallRig Matte Box VND Kit. But they come at a price and you could rather spend the budget on the last quarter which is missing for you next lense.
In this tutorial I show you how to reuse components you already have, like your matte box, DJI RS3 Pro gimbal with focus motor and also how to create a handheld setup with a motorized VND.
This is the second version of this video. I improved the audio and improved all cuts of the video so it is more pleasant and understandable. I also added part descriptions in the video so you can better understand which part is needed for what.
    TIPS FOR MOTORIZED VND
Here are some tips for a motorized VND. You can use superglue to glue on the focus ring on the VND. However, you have to make sure the glue does not flow into the gaps, so hold the VND downwards and always twist it for a minute so it will not stick and lock up. You can use nailpolish-remover to remove the glue in case it gets stuck, but you should definitely avoid it. Also, you should use metal rods instead of carbon rods because they will give you better grip on your VND with the focus motor.

not too bad but it does make it so you can't clamp the mattebox to the rods it seems but perhaps this could bee applied to the side the other problem you may run into is if you have an extending front element but its possible for a focus motor to slip laterally on the gear ring if its wide enough. I've done this using a metal lens hood with an 82mm front thread and a roughly 96mm diameter this also kinda works with the tilta mini mattebox adapter 82mm but the mini matte box is a bit too mini and the adapters are too limiting the worst is the rod clamp is single sided, which means you can't get away easily with leaving the rod clamp slightly loose on the rails enabling the movement back and forth while holding the lens and avoiding deflection. Your design is definately an option to consider.

I hope you get it working. I glued the focus gearing to the VND with superglue. Just make sure to continuously turn the gearing while doing this so you are not glueing the VND in place. See more in the description of the video.
I took my VND to Japan and also to Lapland Finland at -20°C/-4°F and it worked pretty well.
