  • Welcome to our first time watching Field Of Dreams (1989).
First time for both Dad and Son. RE-UPLOAD due to flagging.
Oh wow, this film hooked us both in and 100% grabbed our attention. We don't know baseball but that was ok, we got it! This film stayed with us for a while after watching it. And it grew on us more over the following days. In the edit, we saw that there was a moment when Dad was crying, and he didn't know he was crying during the watching! So wow, this is a strong film to do that.
Written and Directed by Phil Alden Robinson, starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster.
Nostalgia, family, Father, Son, sentimental - this film has it all.

Your son is very smart. He figured it out quickly. This movie makes a lot of grown men cry because who wouldn't want a second chance with thier Dad. I'm sorry your Dad never got to meet your son. He would have been so proud.

This field is still there, to this day. I live about 90 miles from it. They've added a Major League field just across one of the corn fields. The Major League schedules one game to be played there, every season. Also, the speech that James Earl Jones (Terrance Mann) gives, right before the girl fell, has had a life of its own.
I was very impressed with your Son, having the foresight to know what direction the story was taking. He must be a very inquisitive little man. That says a lot about his upbringing. You should be very proud of him.

    Howdy from Texas.
Another really great Father Son film I'd highly recommend is Searching for Bobby Fisher. It's very family friendly and extremely entertaining and touching. And probably best of all. It's based on a true story about real people. IT inspiring, touching, funny and sad, exciting and dramatic. It'll make you want to laugh, cry and cheer for the main characters.
It stars Lawrence Fishburn and Ben Kingsley and several others. It's definitely a film that you will never get tired of watching over and over again.
Love y'all's channel and always enjoy watching your sons reactions as well as yours. And how you allow your boy to discover certain aspects of each movie that you are already aware of. He's obviously very smart and sensitive. Watching you both is a real treat.

    Great reaction and review, guys!
@41:35 I think I agree with your Son on his theory..
I'm not sure, but I have a theory everyone that crossed into the corn field were dead already or stuck on Earth needing some kind of closure with their broken dreams in life...in order to crossover out of their own purgatory. This includes Archibald (Moonlight) Graham and Terrance Mann one of which we were brought to believe was still alive. If you remember correctly, Terrance Mann and Ray both saw the newspaper story about him no longer answering his worried father's telephone calls. Additionally, Terrance makes the comment "there are no rules here" in his own apartment hinting he may have even known himself already and suffering with pain as well...the pain of not doing what used to make him happy - writing.
Each of them had a surprise for them from the field of dreams allowing them closure to cross over. For the players, it was a chance to relive the game again they were banned from. At least two of the players asked "is this heaven?" indicating the moment feels surreal to them like a dream come true and are just as shocked as Ray is at the miracle. The doc got his at bat and recognition he desired and Terrance felt inspired to write again with his faith restored. Finally, although not dead or disappearing into the cornfield, Ray gets the closure from regrets with his own father. Ray was the center piece to bring them all together to the field of dreams. Baseball was the constant over the years as the common denominator for everyone to be brought home to finally rest in peace.
If I'm right on this idea, it's truly some remarkable writing to go along with the amazing score, casting, and acting. The way they all described baseball was poetry. Thick with Americana and nostalgia, I think liked the writers poetry the best. :) As you stated, it was a love letter to baseball. I also think it was a love letter to our human nature to second guess our choices in life.
Sorry for the super long comment. Your reactions inspired me!

I lost my dad in April and he was a big baseball fan. The last time he was able to talk to me I held his hand and we watched a Red Sox game on TV for a few innings. He fell asleep and I sat with him remembering when we played catch and all our trips to Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. I have a game used ball I showed him and he held it in his hands. It has marks from the batt and the green wall at Fenway. Holding it he measured the weight in his head and smiled. Is there enough magic in the world we can play catch again?

A person born in 1952 (like myself) would enter college in 1970; hence, Ray Kinsella would NOT have been at college in the 1960s -- he'd still have been in high school. Be that as it may, the story maintains its mystery and warm-heartedness. "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the 7 other White Sox from 1919 were actual major leaguers. The movie "Eight Men Out" -- the White Sox players banned from playing pro baseball the rest of their lives -- examines the "thrown" 1919 World Series. Ray's family doesn't see the players because THEY DON'T BELIEVE in all the possibilities in the universe. Ray, speaking with Terrence Mann, mentions "cosmic tumblers" (as in a combination lock) that "click into place," which is related to the universe's possibilities. You've got a mighty sharp youngster with you, Sir! Impressive!! In essence, two men are relieved of their pain: Ray's Dad as well as Ray himself! And while we don't see Mr. Mann in a movie scene again, we do witness the effects of what he writes about the field of dreams, as evidenced by the visitors at the end. A wonderful reaction video! Thanks! to you two!

I live about 45 minutes from the movie site. I have taken each of my boys there to "Have a Catch". At the time I went, it was still owned by the two farmers who owned the property. (most of the field was built on the farm that the house belonged to, the other part was another farmers field. They each had consession stands selling souvenirs on each side of the field. The whole site was eventually bought by wall street investors, I haven't been back since that happened.) The School book ban scene has my High School banner hanging in it. I guess this scene was filmed at Dubuque Senior high in Dubuque, IA.

My personal theory is that Terrence Mann doesn't die; he gets to come back and write his story, I base that on the original novel, which used a real living writer called JD Salinger in place of the fictional Mann. The writer wouldn't have killed off Salinger before his time, so I assume the movie's Mann survived as well. WP Kinsella didn't know Salinger and didn't ask his permission to use his name. For the movie, Salinger said he would not allow his name to be used; he'd become a recluse by then.
By the way, Moonlight Graham was also a real person. The people who told stories about him to Terrence Mann knew the real Graham. That makes their performance just that little bit more compelling.

The actor who played John Kinsella just lost his father days before filming. I believe this added to his reactions which is why he was probably crying in the scene. My thoughts are that Terrence Mann died a day or two before Ray caught up with him. The clue is in the newspaper article where his nephew said he wasn't answering his phone. It takes a few days of police investigation and then getting printed in the paper.

Ray only goes into the one room and convinces Terrance to go with him and Terrance never goes back into his apartment. At the Hotel Ray says Terrance is missing and the newspaper says his son who lives in another state has been trying to get a hold of Terrance. Ray leaves to let Terrance call his son, but we never see him dial a number, but Terrance wonders what he should say to his son. After Ray meets Doc. Gram and comes back, there is never anything mentioned about Terrance's conversation with his son, just his conversation with his wife for Ray to call her. So was Terrance Mann's body somewhere in the apartment and Ray met his Ghost?

I think it’s certainly plausible. That line about what to say on the phone is interesting. Stepping back, the whole arc for Terence is a metaphor for his change and to be inspired, like a new ‘life’ and even to ease his pain. If I were to watch this again, I would like to see the extent of other characters noticing or not noticing Terence

"Field of Dreams": A Baseball movie that can reduce strong men to tears, then call their father. "Is this Heaven? Yes, it's Iowa." "Terence Mann" is standing in for J.D. Salinger, who refused to have anything to do with this movie. (Idiot!)
