My honest opinion is that what makes JPOG superior is sound design, like think on it. Everything you said about evolution is so true and same goes with jpog. But the atmosphere of JPOG truly separates it from every other Dino game out there

A mod from 2008 called the GEP v2 improved even the pros you've cited here. Improvements through that mod include for dinosaur AI, coordinated pack hunting, herding and migration based on the relative safety of an area of the island, large carnivore forest ambushes, etc; and for island management, macro terrain editor tools to make truly massive mountains, lakes, forests, etc.
hope prehistoric kingdom gets to be the new great dinosaur park building tycoon, i dont think it should be considered an actual sequel to jwe, even though it seems to be a lot better, prehistoric kingdom isnt like jp in any way, not just in the sense that it hasnt got "jurassic" in the name but the fact that the game focus a lot more in realism.
in jpog dinosaur eating animations are more satisfying. the way T rex sways his head while chewing a goat, the way small carnivores rip off meat from goats ect. But in JWE T rex just puts goat in mouth and swallow
The one thing I REALLY wished for when playing Evolution was to just be able to run around the park as a ranger 😮 That would've just been insane. If the focus wasn't just on park Building, but also on a crazy cool single or multiplayer co op 3rd person campaign. To hunt and tranquilize and capture Dinosaurs from Site B or whatever, like, do things that relate back to your own park. Or search through the old ruins of Site B for useful Research or resources and information to improve your own park. That kind of Jurassic Park game would just be Insane. Heck, remove the park building and just do that ranger game as a stand alone and I'm all in 🤩
What you commented is what is really missing from the JP gaming brand! A really good AAA action adventure/survival game, set in the JP universe. It could be Uncharted or Dino Crisis like and have a strong narrative, maybe even set in an open world/sandbox environment with side quests etc. It's a true shame that, being a gamer for over three decades, the only significant JP adventure games I've played are JP for the Megadrive and SNES and The Lost World for the PSX!! Beyond those, the only noteworthy action adventure games featuting dinosaurs in general are the first two Dino Crisis titles!
I think a good JP adventure game would be best if it had some element that relates to a park like the examples I mentioned 🙂 So that there's not just a short packed campaign, but actually a continuous game to play that can expand. Like things you can upgrade, new hunting gear, traps, darts, new dinosaurs to get. Some sort of deeper game system beneath just the adventure itself. Being able to hunt for rare DNA, samples, research, take on different missions etc. Or just spend more time focusing on your parks finances, loans, funding, research etc. Inspecting security and so on. I think it could be an amazing game, JW Evolution still looks good enough with the graphics that it could even have the park building element too it at the same time, that would be truly insane 😮 Or imagine even hunting a dinosaur loose in a US City 🤩 my goodness, the possibilities are so much fun. Tracking it, hunting it, with help from the authorities. Limited to just an area of the city of course, but open enough to be exciting.
A nice commentary on both games, but I have a problem with reviews like this. They don't mention how game-relieces differ throughout the years. Back in the day (JPOG era) games were released with their full potential already there, while now we must wait at least a year for all the DLCs to come out and then we can talk of a full game. If we review the two games now, when JWE's development is almost finished I can say that both games are equal.
Well I really have mixed feelings on it. I appreciate new DLC and the devs supporting the game long after release. The Return to JP DLC added a lot of great skins and decorations and made some of the dinos so much better. But on the other hand a AAA game with a full release should be a good and fully completed without needing updates and DLC. it should stand on its own. When you pay $60 you should get a $60 game, not a half-finished one. I also can't predict which DLCs will come out to make the game better so I half to work with what I have at the moment. So yes you're right that game development has changed drastically but at the same time a modern game should rely on post-release fixes to be as good as one from 17 years ago.

If you have the dr. Wu dlc you can get a gene that can change the habitat needs too your liking, and you can see what the needs are for a dinosaur before you release it as long as it’s not your first time
in PC you dont need to download mods, all you need to do is change the file text without any addons. Not only you can change max dig sites but dino behaviours and health

This is proof that the game was planning to have more features, but due to the strict release date, universal being strict, and frontier being forced into a place they didint want to be in, they scrapped it and left us with An UNFINISHED PRODUCT and SOLD IT to the Steam Market. That is why 2 Years down the line it is still so lack luster. Yet it again had 2 YEARS that it couldve used to righten itself and make it a worthy product. The thing is, nowadays it is very easy to make a game look good without it actually having much depth. Devs have gotten better at covering their games in icing, so to speak, but forget to bake the cake to go with it. Games like JPOG didn't have that luxury. The visuals were not advanced enough to make them a games main selling point, so if you wanted to sell it, you actually had to put in effort and make a game that is fun and engaging instead of just fancy.
Sucks you can't get Operation Genesis anymore on PC, at least not by "legal means". The game is technically considered "abandonware" and can be acquired for free on the internet. I still felt dirty having to resort to that. I would've HAPPILY bought it on Steam if it were re-released there, but that isn't the case. I was a kid when Operation Genesis came out, on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2. It was such a neat concept, and whatever new park builder sim with the Jurassic name comes out, just call it "Jurassic Tycoon".

Got me confused for a sec as to why vets (I first thought veterinarians) would specifically enjoy JPOG more haha! I think it comes down a lot to two main things: time and device. Most JPOG (and throwing in ZT2) fans play them growing up, where they had relatively more time than who they are now as adults. JWE(2)/Prehistoric Kingdom and Planet Zoo are in theory the far superior sequels that the fans dream of and more. However, being far more complex, they take a lot of time to learn. And learning the basics is one thing, it’s another to master creating something beautiful out of it, it will realistically take months to years. And given that the fan base demographic are now adults with tons of responsibilities, they simply might not have the time. Rather, the old games are not only easier to learn, all the learning had already took place in childhood, giving them a legacy skill if you may - therefore being able to enjoy making something fast if they have a little extra time during the weekend. And device-wise, unless you have a proper gaming PC (I don’t even think a gaming laptop is going to hold up - not for long before breaking down at least), which I think many do not have, you won’t be able to enjoy the game properly. Just one more personal opinion that may or may not be true - with how realistic the games are, there’s a subtle expectation there to make something (an enclosure) realistic, and I suppose our inner zoo designer gets frustrated when we struggle to achieve that; not to mention the unrealistic hope of being as good as the game-dedicated TH-camrs in one weekend.
I put the game away since it was announced that it was possible and I was really excited, but as time went by I was finding fault with it and I got more and more disappointed with the details I saw like the dinosaur models, the maps, the AI, etc. Even if it's an old game, I'll stick with OG, especially since I'm waiting for the Jurassic Punk mod
It wasn't a thing until fairly recently. The fact is the devs never supported modding in the beginning and until now, so that isn't really a valid criticism to his take.
Actually, you can use tge veiwing vents and Towers in JWE. Jwe is FAR better than JWE2 and both are better than JPOG. And that's coming from a diehard JPOG fan.

Good review and comparison i have JPOG on CD and i am playing that game day today but it was a bit boring to me because I crossed it over a thousand times and i started to play jwe but my favorite is JPOG cus its so legendary
Jpog is still better then this game, & Jurassic World Evolution 2. the dinosaurs sounds are superior, the music is the best, for gods sake the AI is somehow more dynamic when hunting then both JWE & JWE 2. Herbivores & carnivores dont constantly kill each other in JPOG if a predator isnt able to find prey they do scavenge from pass kills. Bodies decompose in JPOG.

Maybe I'll come back to this comparison but I have a lot of content planned already. As for them not feeling alive, they certainly have more to offer than JWE's even now. They have animalistic behaviors like the raptors leaping in the air, Paras calling one another, sneezing, yawning, there's a much more in depth territory system, attack others when they have rabies, scratching when they have ticks, limping with bumblefoot, and playing chase with friends. There's so much more than my "cold one with the boys" analogy.

Jurassic world evolution on console is far better than console operation genesis as you could only have 60 dinosaurs in your park at once and only 3 save files. And Jurassic park operation genesis isn't a good game. The mods make it good
the sequel is much better... but the dinos in JPOG somehow still feel more alive and big. I think JWE need to stop trying to be a park management sim and focus more on being a zoo management sim. People arent playing the game to faff around with scientist tab and all that, give us interesting and fun interaction with our dinosaurs. Make feeding and caring for them more complex. They still dont even poo, and dont need shelter for instance. Its a shame. Quantity over Quality

And unpopular opinion : jpog is a great game but it's overly hyped by vets and it basically stands up on nostalgia nowadays

Got me confused for a sec as to why vets (I first thought veterinarians) would specifically enjoy JPOG more haha!
I think it comes down a lot to two main things: time and device. Most JPOG (and throwing in ZT2) fans play them growing up, where they had relatively more time than who they are now as adults. JWE(2)/Prehistoric Kingdom and Planet Zoo are in theory the far superior sequels that the fans dream of and more. However, being far more complex, they take a lot of time to learn. And learning the basics is one thing, it’s another to master creating something beautiful out of it, it will realistically take months to years. And given that the fan base demographic are now adults with tons of responsibilities, they simply might not have the time. Rather, the old games are not only easier to learn, all the learning had already took place in childhood, giving them a legacy skill if you may - therefore being able to enjoy making something fast if they have a little extra time during the weekend.
And device-wise, unless you have a proper gaming PC (I don’t even think a gaming laptop is going to hold up - not for long before breaking down at least), which I think many do not have, you won’t be able to enjoy the game properly.
Just one more personal opinion that may or may not be true - with how realistic the games are, there’s a subtle expectation there to make something (an enclosure) realistic, and I suppose our inner zoo designer gets frustrated when we struggle to achieve that; not to mention the unrealistic hope of being as good as the game-dedicated TH-camrs in one weekend.

LOVE this game!!!!
I put the game away since it was announced that it was possible and I was really excited, but as time went by I was finding fault with it and I got more and more disappointed with the details I saw like the dinosaur models, the maps, the AI, etc. Even if it's an old game, I'll stick with OG, especially since I'm waiting for the Jurassic Punk mod
In jpog you can view through forests but in jwe you can't go through forests .
Almost every dinosaur from Jpog are in JwE And Mods can add ALOT And i mean ALOT of things
It wasn't a thing until fairly recently. The fact is the devs never supported modding in the beginning and until now, so that isn't really a valid criticism to his take.
NGL, JWE is like the most frustrating game i've ever played.
Actually, you can use tge veiwing vents and Towers in JWE.
Jwe is FAR better than JWE2 and both are better than JPOG. And that's coming from a diehard JPOG fan.

It still suffers with some points he said. I played Jwe and Jwe2 and it i didn't really feel a different. I'll still find jpog to be more fun and enjoyable but hey if you enjoy jwe2 more than good on ya for having a different view

Good review and comparison i have JPOG on CD and i am playing that game day today but it was a bit boring to me because I crossed it over a thousand times and i started to play jwe but my favorite is JPOG cus its so legendary

Jpog is still better then this game, & Jurassic World Evolution 2. the dinosaurs sounds are superior, the music is the best, for gods sake the AI is somehow more dynamic when hunting then both JWE & JWE 2. Herbivores & carnivores dont constantly kill each other in JPOG if a predator isnt able to find prey they do scavenge from pass kills. Bodies decompose in JPOG.
I never played this game but I always wanted to play it but Im good with JWE (it can get very boring an stressful)

While JWE is a lot better now, it's still beaten by JPOG. We'd need a whole dinosaur overhaul in JWE.
Maybe I'll come back to this comparison but I have a lot of content planned already. As for them not feeling alive, they certainly have more to offer than JWE's even now. They have animalistic behaviors like the raptors leaping in the air, Paras calling one another, sneezing, yawning, there's a much more in depth territory system, attack others when they have rabies, scratching when they have ticks, limping with bumblefoot, and playing chase with friends. There's so much more than my "cold one with the boys" analogy.
Knavenformed But you have to add on the YT channels that have been shaped from JWE there are loads of documentaries channels like (John Hammond) That have been made from this game
What makes me really sad is that they (frontier dev.) didn‘t learn abour their failure on the first game, now the second is just the same with more dinosaurs and maps🤢
The new update today fixes quite a bit of that.

Jurassic world evolution on console is far better than console operation genesis as you could only have 60 dinosaurs in your park at once and only 3 save files. And Jurassic park operation genesis isn't a good game. The mods make it good
No, Evolution I always pick the same species they are just redskins and its so fast boring and I have only ever modded everything to infinite

the sequel is much better... but the dinos in JPOG somehow still feel more alive and big. I think JWE need to stop trying to be a park management sim and focus more on being a zoo management sim. People arent playing the game to faff around with scientist tab and all that, give us interesting and fun interaction with our dinosaurs. Make feeding and caring for them more complex. They still dont even poo, and dont need shelter for instance. Its a shame. Quantity over Quality
JW2 is better in my opinion, better graphic, models, animations etc...
