It was very useful, thank you. Originally I started to use TS-251 nas with a single, 3TB HDD in Raid 1 but later added a new 2nd 4TB drive. After rebuild, I was able to replace the 3TB with another 4TB and... with a few hours later, was able to extend the capacity without rebuild the entire system. Thanks for the tutorial guide! :)
So my problem is, that once I get into Data Managment, the "manage" button is greyed-out. It's disabled... I can't get to the "replace disks one by one" option. Anyone?
I upgraded from 2TB to 4TB hard Drives, when the process finished (2 Drives), I see the two hard drives with the 4TB capacity but the pool is still at 2TB, I could not see the Expand Capacity anymore??!!! I am currently Re-Synchronizing the Pool to see if that would resolve the issue.
I originally installed two 4 TB hard drives but to use Roon Core Ithey recommend an SSD drive. So I'd like to swap one out for an SSD. The rives themselves look very different and I'm not sure what to buy or how it installs. The SSD drive does not look like it would fit without a housing of some sort?
Good Video however with firmware updates things are different. When I select 'manage' I don't get the "expand capacity" option I only get the "change disc by disc". When I attempt the 'change disc by disc' it will not let me select any of the 4 HD's. Drive 4 is showing abnomal on the scrubs and suggest I replace. I am running raid 5 and currently have 4 - 3T HD's. I have a new 4T for the abnormal 4th drive. Can I just do a hot-swap? Will that mess things up going from a 3T to a 4T? And where would I go to expand the capacity of my storage pool?? Help please.
Hi, very use full tutorial☺ What is the procedure if I just want to change one of my drives, with a new drive (same capacity), because the drive is getting old?
I had to do that and maybe my reply is still on time for you :) 1. Shutdown the device. 2. Remove the drive you want to replace. 3. Important - switch on the device with the missing drive for it to detect degradation of the raid. 4. Shutdown the device again. 5. Insert new disk. 6. Switch on the device again. It will start the rebuilding process on the new drive.
Ryan Beuke I think they are but prefer to be safer for planned changes. If you just hot change hdd I think it will then need to check file system for errors...an extra step.
After removing a disk following this procedure QNAP web interface went inaccessible. I installed replacement drive but nothing changed. What should I do?
Purr Meow - Sounds to me like you’re RAID-1 (“mirrored disc”) was not properly initiated? Because when you remove the disc in BAY-1, the disc in BAY-2 takes over and keeps the operating system up and running. Then when you re-insert the new disc in BAY-1 it will begin ‘rebuilding’ from the disc in BAY-2. Report back with your results.
@@ianmoone1138 I did exactly what you said. When I've replaced first disk all was ok. It finished syncing and then I removed the second one following same procedure. Right after removal web interface and SSH stopped working, but NAS was still accessible through SMB. I tried to shut it off via front panel power button, but only hard poweroff worked. When I restarted the NAS it started sync from 0% and all went good. After full sync I checked Volume1 for errors and successfully expanded capacity. I still think it was software bug. My config: TS-269 Pro w/ 2 x Ironwolf Pro 12TB in RAID1 & 3Gb RAM, QTS 4.3.4.0734
I had to replace one of the drives as it was faulty and I decided to replace both of them to larger capacity ones. Do I need to go through this same process to expand the capacity to the already replaced drives? It takes a long time to rebuild and all I need is to expand the raid volume.
Must be a very big difference between Toshiba's laptop and desktop drives. Have replaced about 50 percent of Toshiba's 500GB laptop drives used in Dell 3030 All-in-Ones due to failed drives.
Obviously I'd have a full backup of all my data somewhere else, but.. When I am changing out the drives with bigger ones, one at a time and letting things "rebuild", all my data is being kept? And when I am done with all the drives the data is still intact and I have more capacity? Thank you
I want to upgrade my drives. I have looked at the videos and it seems simple however, my "Manage" button is greyed out so I can even get to the change drive options. Any ideas? Attached is a photo. Thanks I need to change drives today, if possible.

Great video, but really needs to be updated for 2018 given the changes in firmware.
Thanks Qnap, love your vids, you make it so simple and easy to follow!
My manage button is grayed out... how do i change it's status?
Great video! Showed me exactly what I needed to do.
What is procedure if I have installed only 1 disc out of 2 and need to upgrade that disc? Swap with bigger capacity. How I can do it? Thank for reply
Going for 2x6TB for my good old T212 !! perfect

Is there a way to see or track the rebuild's progress?
yes, in the top of the QNAP interface

What if I backup all into external disk. And replace all disk at once? Could I?
I just tried, the NAS did not boot and cannot get in web interface.
It is unclear that when we change first disk we need to wait until it is fully rebuilded and after that change second disk.
Wait until the raid is completely finished before moving to the next drive.

It worked!! ☺
Why not just pull the drive while the array is on and replace the drive, are they not hot swappable?

Thanks for this video, it was extremely clear and very helpful!

Kevin Carbonaro - This TH-cam link should answer question.

Gmtail - As long as you have RAID-1 properly setup, then yes, you will have everything intact once the rebuilding process is complete.
I want to upgrade my drives.

Thanks I need to change drives today, if possible.
My "Manage" button is also grayed out. I'm trying to add drives to a RAID and I'm not able to. Did you ever figure out a solution to your problem?
If the rebuilding process is ongoing and I really need to turn off my NAS, what should I do?
Don't shut off or you could corrupt some or all of your data. In fact, a UPS backup battery is highly recommended.
Yeah, I really wanna get one compatible with my NAS (I mean, with ethernet or USB communication with the NAS).
Does this work for a TS-451 with 4 drives in RAID-5? I have 3TB drives that I want to upgrade to a larger capacity.
Yes, it does.
This is four years out of date and does not apply for the current (2020) version of QTS
Mine won’t allow me to expand
I like the slightly lisping voice of the narrator. Makes me feel at home.
Also very old information. There is no "Storage Manager" anymore. Maybe "Storage and Snapshots" might be what is more relevant...?
Skip to 1:40 - Everything before it is a waste of time
This is outdated and now obsolete. Please remove and update with correct information.
Useless. None of these options came up on my QNAP NAS.
