  • The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light metro system serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London, England, and provides a direct connection between London's two major financial districts Canary Wharf and the City of London. First opened on 31 August 1987, the DLR has been extended multiple times, giving a total route length of 38 km (24 mi). Lines now reach north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport, and Woolwich Arsenal. Further extensions are under consideration.
Normal operations are automated, so there is minimal staffing on the 149 trains (which have no cabs) and at major interchange stations; the four below-ground stations are staffed, to comply with underground station health and safety regulations.
Passenger numbers have greatly increased as the network has expanded, and in the financial year 2019/20 there were 116.8 million passenger journeys.

Docklands Light Railway is probably the best example of how a light rail/metro system can perfectly complement a heavy rail metro system! It has constantly increased its passenger numbers and allowed a transit desert to have great public transit! I wish NYC would do something like this. The interborough express or BQX would be amazing but the US takes forever to develop transit systems

Even with the ibx, most likely it'll be something more akin the s bahn from germany than light rail

The MTA Interborough Express will be like The London Overground when it is built. The BQX needs to be built so that NYC can get back to their Street Car/Tram roots.

So the IBX will adopt a light-rail system, now whether that's a light-rail metro, i don't think it is, as there are touted to be some street-running portions to the track. A real shame as the IBX will connect so many locations and if extended both ways could potentially connect all 5 boroughs. We should have had our own DLR by now!

Nice. I just stayed at the Canary Wharf Hilton about three weeks ago. Our second floor suite was flush with the DLR line.

Amazing system!! The DLR didn't exist when I visited London late 1960s - early 1970s.
    Thanks DJ Hammers Trains.😀💚

I wonder if eventually instead of having 3 units coupled together, that they might have one longer unit, the equivalent length of 3 units, with ASDO used as necessary

Nice way of intermodal transport, but why isn't it growing as a commuting model?

Hoping the planners for the IBX have this in mind and not North American light rail lol.
