Just got my 2nd private lesson and am doing your video and is consistent with my instructor's. Your videos are awesome and thank you for sharing, I am a 67 year old first time swimmer.
I did 6 of these drills yesterday and they helped so much while being fun at the same time (I did feel sore the rest of the day so maybe it was too much fun 😂). I was finally able to move a significant distance while kicking. The improvement on the overall freestyle won't happen overnight BUT this helped tremendously to improve body position awareness and it gave me tools to check each individual component of the technique. THANK YOU!
Drill no.4 single balance breath that's the most important and toughest, if you master it you can swim longer and faster without gasping for air. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. After giving up years ago, I am trying again to learn to swim. These videos are so helpful. And why are commenters worried about her make up. Obviously, when making a video that people will watch over and over, one might want to look her best.
The problem with many beginners swimming techniques is bad training. Many start with a friend teaching them the dog style. Where you simply famble in water ..mixing short free pulls..hands wide apart ..head above water while doing frog kicks. Once one is able to float with this mixed tech it is hard to learn the basics.. one finds it hard yo do proper techniques and refuses to learn. In my experience it is easier to train one who cannot swim at all than one with these mixed motions. With free style..start with leg strokes.. master the leg strokes ..then learn the arm pulls...then learn body rotations then breathe. All these can be learned in two sessions. Provided the student is good at listening
This is by far the most helpful tutorial as well as narration EVER! My problem is sinking when trying to swim. I’m headed to the pool in a few, now I know what to do 😉
Thanks for the video. I think you may have hit on something I never gave a moments thought to when swimming… having an actively engaged core. I’ll try to incorporate this into my swimming next time I’m out.
Have not swim for a long time. I dont know or i can swim or float in the water. But this kinda calms me down. Gonna practise this soon before my holiday comes 🤣
This is awesome! I have been practicing the freestyle drills you recommend in your other videos and they have definitely helped me improve my technique. I will add these to my routine.
Just want to say thanks so much for making all these videos! I only just started swimming, your videos are so extremely helpful. And I think you are awesome!
A proper professional with easy steps to learn and practice. Some videos too much talk to the point were you're lost Nd can't follow anymore. Thank you!!
Love your channel so much! I am passionate about swimming, and watched a bunch of your videos to learn by myself. You are so professional! Thank you very much! By the way, love the way you make videos. The episode and the background music make it so fun! Hope to learn from you one day and to be a professional swimmer like you!
Awesome! I appreciate you sharing these free tips, my legs don’t sink but I have trouble with the free kick and will definitely be using drills 5 and 6. Thank you so much!
Ok...these look really tough! I know I have the power in my upper body but my legs are just like rocks. I'm going to try these for a few weeks as part of my warmup and see how it goes. Thank you!!
Thank you Chloe for the video! I was stuck with leg sinking for the longest time, until I tried the drill #4 and I finally figured out which core muscle to use to keep the feet up. In addition it corrected my bad habit of pushing my hand down to breath. I swim so much more efficient now. :) By the way drill #1 still seems impossible to me...
With covid-19, all community pools are closed, which is good but i miss ‘em so much, and can’t practice what you just wonderfully just taught... i lack these techniques and finds sinking at times
Awesome video! Thank you for your recommendations! As you mentioned in your video it is not that easy to stay horizontal to the water surface while swimming the front crawl. For me at least it is extremely hard to do, my legs are sinking so much. I will surely do the drills you are recommending to do and see what happen! Have a pleasant day.
Wow....!!! I have been watching this video and even watched it pool-side. The drills are very helpful, I appreciate how you clearly explain extending/stretching out my body, and I am improving. However,...I do not think that I understand what it is you mean by "engaging my core."
I’ve been going to lessons for 4 months now and I still have confusing ideas about correct kicking. First they say kick hard then they say the kick should be relaxed then they sey you should kick from the knees not from the hip..kicking relaxed from hip has helped me swim 25 m with breath every 3 stroke without stopping..but know the teacher says that I should kick from the knees more...but it’s exhausting..kicking hard is taking my breath...it’s very frustrating because I get contradicting information and don’t know which is the correct way...I am going to group lessons with different teachers and from each one I got indication that helped me but also other indication that are confusing..what is the difference between good body posture and leg position and body position when your legs are sinking? Where is the fine line between the two of them? What do you feel when you don’t have good body posture in the water? How do you know?
I didnt realize how much my legs were sinking! I have started to do your drills in this video. Boy are they tricky! Seems my core is not strong enough yet, but I'm getting there! How often do you think I should be doing these drills? Also is it best to use them before a workout or after? Thanks Chloe!
What exactly does it mean to have your core "engaged"? I've heard this in a few videos about front crawl, but don't really understand. Does it mean to tense up your lower back and abdominals to keep a straighter body position?
The method that I've been taught to feel that your core is 'engaged' is to imagine that you're stretching a stick of liquorice that's attached between the top of your pelvis and the bottom of your rib cage. As you stretch this imaginary stick, you will feel a tightening of the stomach, but more importantly, this will have a tendency of pushing your hips / bum towards the surface which in turn, will straighten your posture / legs so that you're more horizontal in the water.
@@garypoole1658 thank you Gary, I'll try to feel that next time I'm in the pool. The last couple of times I found two things that were a little bit helpful here: 1. ducking my head further underwater occasionally to look down my body and see where my feet / legs were! and 2. sometimes doing a fake breath during recovery -- i.e. turn my head to breathe, but actually don't breathe. You'd think this would be the same as turning to breathe normally, but it immediately highlighted that I'm almost stalling during the breath, causing my front arm and shoulder to sink.
Subscribed....and what I'd like to understand more is ankle flexibility vs forward propulsion with kick only. As an Ironman I can swim but I get almost no propulsion from my kick even though I feel like I'm doing the same kick with my legs! :-(
I tried "Drill #1: Floating" I give myself an F minus. I tried it with lungs full & lungs post exhalation. With lungs full, the legs sink a little faster-- they cut a hole through the water, down through which the rest of me slides.
The thing with the float is thogh, not everyone can do this. Men have a disadvantage. I for example have strong and heavy legs, and I can engage my core as much as I wont, there is no floating for me. The only way to stay up is by kicking.
I suggest trying to practice floating (staying still) by gently holding on to the hand rail (that runs along the pool). Lower your head, facing the pool floor, this should raise your legs above the water, bringing your body into the floating position. I am also male with a muscular body and heavy legs, the above technique helped me.
yayy! thank you Chloe, the legs sinking happens to me. Im going to try your tips the next tim I go swimming. How do you keep from getting tired though?
Great tutorial, as always ;) I'd like to get some tips on "why am i getting out of breath during freestyle and how to fix it". I'm a beginner swimmer, I can easily swim 50-60-ish 50meters in breaststroke. However doing the same with freestyle... it hurts, not only my shoulders, but also I am waaaay out of breath. Is freestyle has a higher demand of oxygen? (My overall fitness level wouldn't indicate getting out of breath this soon at freestyle, I can run a 46 minute 10k for example) thanks ;)
Water goes in my mouth when I turn to breath.. I guess it’s because my body gets down as I turn my head to the side and I just can’t seem to get to air.. it’s too high! I don’t know if I am making sense ! But thanks a lot for your videos very clear instructions
here a fix if ur bad at breathing while swimming while swimming ur face is in the water you gonna let out all the oxygen you have then do 1 butterfly to get the air you need then keep going
What if a person is bottom heavy; long, thick, muscular/fat legs, in comparison to their upper body? How does one overcome a physiological disadvantage relative to swimming to prevent their legs from sinking.
That's my issue - 6'5" and my height is in my legs, which naturally sink because I have more muscle there than in my arms. I've given up with front crawl because I'm not really built for it.
Greate video. I have a more basic problem. How do I kick those 12" kicks including the surface kicks. My kicks tends to be 6" and not hitting the surface all the time.
Go on one knee and give your core a 💍 .. just kidding !!! I have similar issue with kicking and going nowhere .. I can swim a full length with just hands and a pool buoy between my legs because I can't seem to kick and use my hands at the same time 😢
You don't need 20 minute videos when you really know what your talking about. Best swim vids out there. Thanks C.
Just got my 2nd private lesson and am doing your video and is consistent with my instructor's. Your videos are awesome and thank you for sharing, I am a 67 year old first time swimmer.
Hooray for you... I took my 1st lesson at my 60th birthday. It's never too late to learn.

After 30+ years of doing it wrong.
I can finally kick "my anchor legs"

Yeah! ENGAGE your core! Sometimes we forget our bodies have everything to do with actually swimming!
That's true not only for swimming, it helps in many activities. E.g. slacklining.
Great video, thanks Chloe.... How could 297 people actually dislike this video? The internet is weird!!
Best advice ever, short but very practical ! Thanks.
Thanks!
Engaging the glutes did the trick for me! Thanks a lot!

Oh Thank you so much for this.I have saved some money to learn how to swim on TH-cam.Will share this video.

Sound on this video is much better now, Can hear you now without the Echo sound.
Thanks for the lovely video Chloe x.
The problem i face the most is that when I am only kicking my legs ,i hardly move a few feet and then get tired
Thanks for the tips. I used to swim competition at a younger age, I’m rehabilitating now at a later age in life, thanks for the tips
Awesome! I appreciate you sharing these free tips, my legs don’t sink but I have trouble with the free kick and will definitely be using drills 5 and 6. Thank you so much!
One of the few video's on subject where drills to correct are provided, thank you
Finally one useful video about sinking legs

This is the best explanation I’ve ever seen! Greetings from Russia!
G'Day from Australia! Your awesome. I really like the idea of balancing a paddle on the crown of the head drill. Thanks for all the trips.
Great drills. Great tips. Terrific swimmer.
Thank you!
Great Coach... Today I tried kicking drill and came to know what is actually swimming from the core. Thanks 🙏
With covid-19, all community pools are closed, which is good but i miss ‘em so much, and can’t practice what you just wonderfully just taught... i lack these techniques and finds sinking at times
I’ve never been good at this stroke but s lot of things you showed resonated with me thanks
Why you stop making videos? You’re really good at them and giving tutorials.
Thank you! I got married and I’m having a baby soon. So I was busy and now I’m physically unable. I hope to again eventually.
Chloe Sutton : congratulations and all the best!
Thank you. These drills and ideas help break up a swim session. Will try the paddle on the head thing when its quiet in the pool.
Thanks for a great video. I'm new to your channel so I haven't perused through your vids yet, but can you make a video on breathing?
I learnt to swim but I needed the technique one of the best video thanks🤗
No one else can match your performance. Thank you for your hard work and for your efforts i hope i do it right.😘🙏
Iam brinnger still training 🏊♂️

You are a very good teacher. Do you have an academy where children can be sent to learn?
Wow....!!! I have been watching this video and even watched it pool-side. The drills are very helpful, I appreciate how you clearly explain extending/stretching out my body, and I am improving. However,...I do not think that I understand what it is you mean by "engaging my core."

One of the best Videos ever 👏👏👏
Can you please show how to float on back and how to stand in deep water?
Thanks a lot my Friend for the videos.
You are so important for us.
God bless your way!

I love your technical drills
The guidance you gave seems really nice. I am gonna try in my next session and let you know

What exactly does it mean to have your core "engaged"? I've heard this in a few videos about front crawl, but don't really understand. Does it mean to tense up your lower back and abdominals to keep a straighter body position?
This is a question that I have always had. I believe it is tensing the body in certain areas to hold a streamlined position.

Thanks Chloe, for your good tips for free style grettings
Hey Chloe thank you for all the tips and videos, greetings from México 🇲🇽
Thank you..helpful comments w each drill. Really using swimming post double knee replacement.
hi Cloe, can you pl. elaborate what exactly you meant by "Engage your core" ?
Pull your bellybutton in and point your tailbone to your feet. Stronger, straighter body line for faster swimming.
Thank you Chloe for putting up these tips they are really helpful
Loved all ur videos for swimming drills and learning
Can you make one on how to tread water?

The speed she gets from just kicking. Wow! I need to work on my kicks...
So clear and cool I love it 😊
Hi, miss Sutton. U explain everythig that I needed to swin better. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for your inspiring video. I am practicing like this but not confident. Will keep going.
Nicely explained styles with a lovely form.💐
Informative content.👌
Keep smiling☺💐💞
Amazing drills. Thank you !!
Oh, wow. Now I get why Olympic swimmers swim twice as fast as my best sprint.
Great tutorial, as always ;)

Unfortunately the answer to improving comfort when swimming is "just keep swimming"! Relax and breathe. Focus on a strong exhale. You'll get there
+Chloe Sutton Thank you, you don't know (of course you do know :D ), but this really helps! I'll keep "grindig" :)
Helpful video for beginner swimmers.

here a fix if ur bad at breathing while swimming
while swimming ur face is in the water you gonna let out all the oxygen you have then
do 1 butterfly to get the air you need then keep going
thanks for giving best tricks of swimming for beginner
Chloe how often should I swim in a week
Thank you very much dear....your videos is having very good and knowledge content for a new swimmer
Will try and show this clip to the swim club that I swim with next week!
This is very helpful.
Thank you mam.

Keep at it! With practice, it most definitely is possible, even for a more bottom-heavy swimmer.
Well the way you teach is very easy to understand thanks im learning alot from you
Thank you so much! with best wishes for you !
Greetings from Iran 🌸🌷🌹
Thanks to you.. would love to come and learn from you..
This is very helpful for me.. thanks for making this tutorial 😁😁
I wish I can effort to have you as my coach! Thanks for the video!
Thank you Chloe Sutton your video is so informative .
Can yoh tell us about how to prevent lack of oxygen while doing freestyle!
Thank you for the hints. How do I improve my front kick? I get close to nothing out of my front kick. Thank you!
What do you mean front kick? Flutter kick? Watch my kicking in freestyle video
Sek
@@ChloeSuttonswim I meant freestyle kick, or when I am on my belly with a kick board
Thank you so much. This is what i been looking for.
Now thats a good video and technique for correcting sinking legs❤❤👍
I can see your legs don't sink without kicking.
Is there any drill for that?
Greate video. I have a more basic problem. How do I kick those 12" kicks including the surface kicks. My kicks tends to be 6" and not hitting the surface all the time.
What is meant by engaging the core, how to do it?
tense your abs like you would with any other muscle, it helps support the spine and pelvis during swimming
Go on one knee and give your core a 💍 .. just kidding !!! I have similar issue with kicking and going nowhere .. I can swim a full length with just hands and a pool buoy between my legs because I can't seem to kick and use my hands at the same time 😢

Good swimming teacher, easly understood
This was particularly helpful.
Yay!
