  • Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing a very unique take on the classic penknife. This knife is by Maserin. Maserin is a Maniago-based manufacturer of Italian 'sporting knives' and has gained a relatively strong following since their founding in 1960. Today, Maserin utilises a variety of methods to produce their knives-combining modern steels and machinery with noble materials to craft bespoke pieces of cutlery. I own two examples of Maserin's work, and both pieces are beautiful, as they are utilitarian.
This particular piece is part of Maserin's Classic Line and is known as the 'Filiscjna'. It features a very slim and trim profile and houses a single, Wharncliffe blade. The handle is comprised of polished nickel-silver and exotic hardwood. This particular piece offers Briar wood burl, but other materials, such as Walnut and even Mother of Pearl are also available. This knife struck me as somewhat unusual, due to its blade shape and overall design. I'm quite happy to have it, as the piece makes for an excellent Gentleman's (or Lady's!) knife that one could carry almost anywhere.
    Maserin Filiscjna:
-440c hollow-ground, satin finished Wharncliffe blade.
    -Nickel-silver (integral) liners and bolsters.
    -Briar wood burl inlays.
    -Made in Italy.
Overall, the Maserin Filiscjna is an incredibly stylish take on a classic penknife. While a bit atypical in both its handle and blade, it captures the essence of what makes a traditional, small penknife. Being boiled down to ease of carry, function, form, and artistry. I'm glad to have this piece in my collection, even despite its slight imperfection!

Cute little knife. What with the briar scales and the small, narrow blade, I reckon it would make a nice pipe-bowl poker/scraper.
These are typical from Maniago and are usually found with mother-of-pearl scales.
They owe their name to knife-maker Giovanni del Tin, also known as Filiscjin, who in 1927 came up with the idea of recycling the small waste pieces from the manufacturing of larger mother-of-pearl handles, a valuable material at the time, alternating them with nickel-silver bolsters on the handle of small pen knives.
Sometimes they feature multiple blades, in different shapes, and I believe that the layard loop was used for a colored ribbon, rather than for an actual lanyard.

Once again, your insight on Italian knives is exemplary. This knife sure has an interesting history. Thanks again for the clarifications, I much appreciate it!
      Cheers, as always!

That's a lovely thing. It echoed of the french fruit knife for me initially, but I do see what you mean regarding the Clayton Spearpoint. Thanks for showing it.

That's a good way to look at it, as well! I hadn't really thought of that.

Very pretty, but the lanyard hole "protrusion" is hideous,,
The wood is beautiful, and nickel silver is far superior to brass,, and a hollow ground Wharncliffe is a work of art,,
Thank you so much for showing us this one,,
All the best my friend,, 👍

I'm with you when it comes to the lanyard hole! 🤣
Overall, this is a very nice piece, but it sits a little too high on the price scale, in my eyes.
      Thanks for watching.
      Cheers, as always!

In popular vernacular, that central piece is called a cigar band.

That is a gorgeous looking knife! I have a few Maserin knives, but not this one. I just tried to look this up on HH, but they don’t have it. My experience of this company is that their knives are generally very good, but rarely perfect, like your.Consoli. Mine has two lovely looking scales, but then not even close to matching one another.

If you're looking for this model, check Moonraker Knives. As far as I am aware, they're the only place in the UK that sells this knife!
      Thanks for watching.

I have two Maserin knives bought several years ago both with wooden covers nothing fancy they weren't expensive in fact very good value, both have offset blades in the closed position doesn't bother me as they are just users and nice size for pocket dropping. I bought them from Heinnie Haynes not seen any like them since. Briar Burr very attractive. 😁

Which models were these, if you can recall?

@@TheKnifeRaven Sorry can't remember what the names of the models were two different styles of knives but both have Coltello Maniago on the blades, very ordinary workaday knives stoutish pull and good walk and talk, must be nearly ten years since I bought them. 😁

That is a beauty mate!! I enjoy my Maserin knives in the collection.
I would like a nice knife like that to carry on my keys. But like you said...you wouldnt want to damage it. Higonokami has one with a leather sheath for keys. I might try and get something like that.
    Brilliant video my friend

I've seen those Higos! Very inexpensive, really. And I'm sure they'd make a great carry.
Thanks for stopping in, as always, friend!

@TheKnifeRaven I'm not a massive fan of the Higos. Love the history and the look. Just don't like them in hand. But I could use the keyring leather slip for knives like this on my keyring was my thinking.
I always thought these were a little pricey. They do some others around this price. But after watching your video....has changed my mind. Very well made and beautiful.
      Cheers mate!

@SteelCityKnives I certainly prefer the Mercator over the Higo, but I can still see the appeal.
This Maserin came in around 60 GBP, if I recall. It's not exactly cheap, but I'd still recommend them!
      Cheers, as always!
