    Thank you for giving love to this amazing band. When I first listened to Lore (my first Elder album), I felt like it was a band whose sound was made just for me. Such a unique combination of elements. I've loved basically everything they have done except the first album, which is just ok to me. They build on all of the music history we love and bring their own beautiful take on it. For those who have stopped looking for new music, you are missing out on some truly special releases like this.

      Agree 100%. I personally consider Dead Roots Stirring to be their first actual album. I think they do too considering they don’t play any of those first songs live. Elder is tied for my #1 band of the year.

    One of my favorite bands in the last decade. I was fortunate to see them live in a small bar in downtown Oakland in 2018 (I think), between “Reflections of a Floating World” (in my top 10 favorite rock albums of all time) and “Omens.” Thanks for featuring, I love this one, as well!

    Yeah, this album rocks, even better than Omens. Btw, Nick DiSalvo also released a solo album last year under the moniker Delving. It's titled Hirschbrunnen and it's a beautiful instrumental album somewhere between Progressive/Psychedelic Rock, Post Rock & Electronica.

      Yes! Nick’s Delving album was brilliant. Everything the guy touches is just masterful. Without question my favorite living artist, made even better by the fact that he’s one of the coolest guys you’ll ever meet.

    It really is amazing how these guys keep up such high quality material on every release. Got into them when Reflections came out and it blew my mind. Omens is addictive, and Passage is stellar. I find that their sound also mixes in some elements of 90s/00s indie and post rock, along with bluesy stoner/heavy rock, psych, and prog. And Nick’s vocals always sounded like a huskier Perry Ferrel to me. Happy to see Pete so psyched about this album and band.

    Glad you like it. Seen some mixed reviews on it. I love it. I think it’s their best to date. A solid mix of everything they’ve done up to this point, including nicks solo project delving, and the gold & silver stuff. My favorite tracks are Catastasis and Endless Return yet I find myself listening to the entire album all the way through. I must admit first listen was overwhelming. But as per usual with elder, the more you listen to it, the better it gets. One of my favorite bands and I can’t wait to see these songs live. I give it a 4.5/5

    Pete before the year is over you owe it to yourself to check out the new album by Parius called The Signal Heard Throughout Space. It's a proggy space opera concept album with influences from Between the Buried and Me, Haken, and Devin Townsend style material. It's one of the best releases of this year, and the vocalist is terrific.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have that one, pretty good. Bandcamp says of the songwriting: "Mastodon and Opeth with the eccentricities of bands like Mr. Bungle and The Mars Volta". It does play like an opera. The singer has a good voice but I don't always like the way he sings (like on "The Human Molecule" where he almost does that growly/speaking thing & parts of "The Outer Limit" where he actually goes there). "Contact" really reminds me of "Breaking The Law" if run through a heavy/death metal filter. "Dimension Y" is probably my fave track & "Arecibo" is interesting

    This is easily my favorite Elder album. I want to love Omens, but I just can't deal with the vocals. The vocals still aren't the strongest aspect of Innate Passage, but the approach is much better than on Omens. The vocals on Omens remind me of a mid 00's post hardcore/"emo" band and just don't work for me. I LOVE super heavy stoner doom (Sleep, Electric Wizard, Monolord, Acid King etc), but I feel a number of bands did it much better than Elder did on their first couple albums and I much prefer the direction they started heading in with the release of Lore.

      I have those Bramhall albums (5 total: s/t, Shades, Welcome, Jellycream & Rich Man), I just wish he'd cut loose more often. A lot of his tunes are pretty laid back - he can clearly play with more fire. Like on "Hammer Ring", "Snakecharmer", "Jealous Sky", "I'm The One", "Smokestack", "Green Light Girl" & "My People". Also like "Going Going Gone" (withTedeschi Trucks Band - Doyle & Derek together!). His version of "Hear My Train A Comin'" has a killer ending

    Hi Pete! Just curious and maybe you've done a video on this but I noticed you always hold up CD's as opposed to vinyl releases.Although I'm not an audiophile I like to have the best sound possible with every release. I jumped on the CD bandwagon in the mid 80's mostly because I didn't have a choice. 15 years ago with the resurgence of vinyl I opted out as I was already to deep in the CD buying/collecting and didn't want to have vinyl AND CD's but stick to one format. Now I'm thinking I made a mistake as many old LP"s that I love and were hard to get have now been re-issued. Also most people I see on TH-cam who review new/old music usually hold up vinyl releases. I end up feeling like I've missed out. Anyhow, what's your take?

    • @jimmycampbell78
      @jimmycampbell78 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could buy both and double up on format if you want, finances allowing. Or switch back to vinyl records.
      For me, I started to buy music right at the end of the 80s and early 90s so CDs became my thing. I don’t even own a record player, and CDs are cheaper. For me that answers one part of your question.
      In regard to the other, I think the stereo/speaker system you use and/or headphones makes far more difference to your audio quality and experience than vinyl/cd format does, I really do although people claim vinyl records have a ‘warmer’ sound.

    • @Benji306
      @Benji306 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmycampbell78 Thanks...I may under the illusion that most serious collectors are buying vinyl and that may not be the reality.

    • @wolf1977

      @@Benji306 Neither for me, went all digital via mp3 a few years ago & never looked back. I can now actually afford ALL of the music I wanna own without having to make choices (for example I've now downloaded songs from well over 200 new 2022 albums - over 1,000 total tracks). I'm also a 'reformed' audiophile - if you told me years ago that I'd be all digital I would've called you crazy, but have since put all my cd's in storage & sold my vinyl. There was definitely a period of 'accepting' mp3's, the key is to ensure consistently high bit rates. Sure it's a lossy format but honestly it's plenty good enough for my needs

    Hey Pete I got a show idea that may actually help u get more views etc long term.
    How about a show focusing purely on 21st century bands to bring people up to the current times. Do a 21st century thrash metal show and discuss current thrash bands older guys may not have heard of etc
    21st thrash metal
    21st century death metal
    21st century classic metal
    21st century Hard Rock etc
    It could possibly be recurring show. The point is create a show, about NEWER bands that people should check out if they prefer this sub genre or that sub genre. So you get Metallica fans into some new thrash band, then you get some Morbid Angel fans into some new death metal bands & so on. Maybe do 10 essential 21st century (insert sub genre here) bands everyone should know.
    So your 21st century show playlist has many different genres and you can focus on one band per episode, per genre or however ya want. The goal is a recurring show that pulls the older guys kicking & screaming into the 21st century.
    Just throwing it out there, have a nice day.

      I've done PLENTY of those...and very few people watch them. You have to understand, the vast majority of the folks who watch this channel are in the 45-70 year age bracket. And a high percentage of them don't care about new music and new bands.

    • @seaoftranquilityprog

      Just look at any of the Wednesday shows promoting new releases from newer bands, regardless of genre, or when we talk about 21st century bands and topics on In the Prog Seat, HVS, etc...they are the least viewed shows. I will continue to discuss new bands and albums, but just know that historically that's not what people come here to watch.

    • @integrity101

      @@seaoftranquilityprog
      Please forgive me *I wasn't very clear.* I understand what u said & I've heard you discuss it before. I'll try to be more articulate. I also come here because I'm almost in that age bracket and I love content on older bands. I am that demographic.
      Maybe the show is called *IF YOU LOVE THIS CLASSIC ALBUM, CHECK OUT THIS NEW BAND/Album (or side project).* Attention spans are short these days & people want to watch discussions about their favorite bands correct? So your guest spends just a few minutes discussing a classic then just a few minutes discussing a modern album/Band that really gives them a similar kind of vibe or feel 10-15 minute episodes. So classics like master of puppets or sabotage or Rising or whatever are on your thumbnail and you briefly discuss those to get the viewers interested, then basically *a short pitch on why we should check out this new band* before you lose our attention. Short episodes easy to digest. It's not overwhelming for the old guy and we can respectfully milk the classics a little more for content.
      Its basically an underrated modern album show/series but you are getting us grumpy old timers *in the door so to speak by covering the classic band.* For example I'm a big Pantera & Bad Company guy. Love those bands. If you had an episode of "If You Love Straight Shooter, Yiu Need to check out......" I would watch and I would be very curious to see what modern album SOT thinks may scratch that straight shooter itch so to speak.
      You do a fantastic job with SOT and I am not a content creator so if this idea is terrible I apologize. My goal is not to waste your time. I'm just saying if next month SOT has a show called "IF YOU LOVE VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT..." I'm gonna click but before I do I'm going to be very interested in the MODERN album you SOT guys come up with. I'm gonna enjoy the Pantera talk and I'm probably gonna check out the new band. I dont think I'd be the only one.
      Thank you for reading. Thank you for this channel. Please enjoy your holiday season.

    Only a few good brand new releases this past week for me (relatively speaking):
    Nervous Eaters/Monsters + Angels - pretty good rock album
    Haken/Nightingale - new single from this excellent prog band. Pete Jones is back on keys
    Marillion/Holidays In Eden - new SuperDeluxe Edition with 3 cd's plus a BD. I'm kinda on hiatus with this band but if you're a fan this set's got some good stuff including a bunch of live tracks from Rockpalast
    The Samurai Of Prog/Anthem To The Phoenix Star - on paper a superstar band, so many great players have guested across their various albums but honestly only Omnibus/Omnibus 2 & Undercover really grabbed me as albums. Otherwise just a smattering of good tracks. Same here, I liked "Killing Hopes" & "Behind The Curtain" but that's about it...The also put out The Spaghetti Epic 4 this year which is just weird
    Trey Anastasio/The Beacon Jams - cool concept, he's doing a weekly show from The Beacon over an eight-week 'virtual residency' stay. Benefits the non-profit WaterWheel Foundation. It's rockin', jammy, at times funky & quirky - everything here gets an extended treatment featuring Trey's great playing as the focus. I like this a lot, nice mix of solo material & Phish tunes...
    Mark Knopfler/The Studio Albums 2009-2018 - 6 cd set, this is A LOT of Knopfler (87 tracks)! Honestly I greatly prefer older Knopfler (or even Dire Straits) but there are some nuggets if you dig (mainly on disks 4 & 6). Much of this is introspective & mellow, not many songs that really show off the more fiery side of his great playing. Probably mainly for hard core fans only
    Pendragon/Fallen Dreams & Angels & All The Loose Ends - this band never really connected with me on a large scale but there's some good stuff here. It's a compilation somewhat similar to The Rest Of Pendragon, mostly tracks from the 90's. I was surprised by how much I liked this - I may have to go back & elisten to their earlier albums
    Tony Molina/In The Fade - surprise album of the week, melodic ALT pop/rock. Made up mostly of a bunch of really short songs (1.5-2 minutes each) that're really well crafted (a la Matthew Sweet?). Even covers Thin Lizzy's "Banshee" on an older album. Seems to have about 6 other releases of similar makeup that I'll have to check out...
