I used to be a GM tecnical trainer, now retired. 99 percent of buyers never read the owners manual period. Ford lists a serve duty maintence schedule to change the trransmission fluid at 30,000 miles. With over 80,000 miles on a 2022 that is serve duty usage. Be smart and take a couple of night to read it. I tell friends and family to do that, also check your oil levels ervery other fillup. Check your brakes as well every time you rotate your tires. You'd be suprised how many people never listen for strange noises etc., because they have their radio blasting all the time. Being pre-emptive on your vehicle will go along way to less expensive repairs. I doubt that Ford will offer good will with that many miles and proper maintence was not done.
Everyone freaks out when I tell them my 2014 focus st has 218k miles on factory engine and transmission. I always change my fluids and use the best fluids and filters. I change all the filters regularly because it's cheap when I do it myself and only takes a few hours of meandering through the fluid and filter changes compared to taking the vehicle in, dropping it off somewhere, getting a ride and being concerned about it being done properly. I change my own brakes and rotors, brake fluid, engine oil, trans fluid, etc are cheap and relatively easy with a floor jack and some heavy duty ramps and a basic set of hand tools.
Manufacturers are hard to figure. My Toyota claims you never need to change the transmission fluid. Owners manual and dip stick say - never. Oddly the transmission has a drain plug so I change it every 60000. Now it has 100. The owners manual on Chevy truck which I use to tow my camper wants you to change transmission oil every 45,000. Oddly the pan has no drain plug so the job can be a mess. I should have put a drain plug in it after the first change but couldn't find one.
I purchased a GM product new in 2008. I've had the transmission flushed every 50k miles , and I personally changed the oil every 3500 miles myself. It's 15 years old with 220k miles. The engine and transmission still run strong. The rest of the vehicle, well, that's a story for another time.
Don't panic. It's most likely dirty or just worn out fluid. Solenoids can stick open or closed to long. Have Ford change the fluid. Look over the owners manual for other maintenance intervals too. Driving long miles isn't severe duty it's normal duty but over doing the maintenance schedule is not good. Good Luck Daniel!
Whatever it is it's not the truck or Ford's fault. Ford says to change the fluid in the transmission and PTU every 30k under severe duty which is definitely what he qualifies as. I wouldn't take this as something "wrong" with the maverick.
From what I've read about the 8F35 transmission. It is supposed to be an 8-speed automatic except it will not utilize second gear and skip over it under normal acceleration. It'll go 1 - 3 - 4 - 5 - etc. Under extremely light pedal it will shift in the second gear. Mine only has 10,500 mi on it and I have noticed that my 3-4 shift sort of slams in the gear more times than not as of recently. If i recall correctly, for all those wondering, The owners manual of our Mavericks state that the service interval for the transmission is at 100,000 miles. Which in my mind is ridiculous.
I have a Blazer and I go by trust local mechanics recommendations on fluid changes. The auto maker/dealership could care less if you’re vehicle lasts past the warranty end date. They would much rather you buy a new vehicle at 100k than spend $10,000 to fix all the issues caused by lack of maintenance due to them not telling you or the manual being ridiculous with maintenance miles. I mean some of these manufacturers say to change your oil every 10k miles! If you’re not changing oil every 4-5k your wallet will be in for a world of hurt sooner then later!
I thought the Maverick transmission was a Chevrolet 9 speed with 2nd gear removed or something like that. That sounds a little sketchy to me. Ford has had a lot of transmission issues with their vehicles from what I've heard.
Try changing Trans. fluid (synthetic)with the same specs. it calls for. Had a problem like that with a trans. That procedure worked. Do NOT flush the trans. Just drain and refill what came out. Good luck Daniel.😎
You did beat on it pretty hard for 80,000+ miles without a transmission fluid change. The fact it isn’t blown up is rather impressive. Usually 30,000-40,000 miles is recommended for trans fluid changes
I totally agree with you, unfortunately many people never change their transmission fluid and the dealer is definitely not going to change trans fluid on a vehicle that has been traded to get it ready for resale.
From what I've heard this is a somewhat common issue with Ford's 8F35 transmission. Sometimes it's just a software issue but I doubt that would be the cause after so many miles. The Transit Connect has a TSB for "harsh engagement" but the fix is a transmission overhaul.
Same thing happened to me in my 2022 Ranger...hard 3-5 shifts. Same for down shifting and really hard reverse gear. Had my tranny replaced at about 28k which is ridiculous. Hope you get your issue figured out!

I think the Mav manual states an interval of 150,000 miles between transmission fluid changes for normal driving conditions. I think Daniel was correct to assume he'd be early at 100,000 if going by the manual....although......80K+ miles in a year and a half is some crazy mileage. Might exceed the definition of normal driving conditions. I wonder what the warranty is on the transmission.
I just got one of these. My manual says to change the transmission fluid every 150,000 miles with normal daily driver use. For towing trailers, car-top trailers etc, it's every 30,000 miles. Crazy difference in those numbers... Thanks for the video. I'm not a car expert and this made me look even harder at my scheduled maintenance.
Like already mentioned, can you do your own drain and fill of transmission fluid. Or have transmission repair shop (sooner appointment than dealer) due drain and refill, they usually clean or change screen.
I’m just glad you’re not one of those people who thinks 85,000 is a lot of miles. That would be completely unacceptable for a transmission in a truck. In any car to be honest. A truck should last 120 K before anything. Major goes wrong.
When I got delivery of my 22' Maverick about a year ago, I noticed all 4 tires were at 44psi ...that's the maximum pressure on the sidewall. It's supposed to be 35psi, cold pressure. Since finding that out I wanted to find out the levels of the PTU & rear differential. Good thing I checked them, both were low by 150ml. They probably fill both on a bench so they need to make sure it's closer to level since that's how both are filled .... until there's a stream of fluid pouring out, not just a drip. It took a while of pumping fluid in till it started coming out. Not very confidence inspiring.
For what it’s worth; I noticed with my 2020 ranger that how the transmission mapped shift points had a lot to do with how well the engine was running. A cheap and easy fix would be changing the spark plugs, or at least inspecting them for fouling. Who knows what damage our cheap ethanol laden fuels are doing to newer engine systems, especially after 80K miles.
Mine does the same. Mostly a hard early downshift from 4th to 3rd. But you definitely need to change ptu fluid. I think the interval is around 25k-30k. Mine has 15k and 16 months old mostly conservative easy driving but I plan to change it before it's scheduled.
I read this in the manual and it’s really a lifesaver. The information is something that is never told by a mechanic I don’t know why they don’t tell us.
So sorry Daniel. After 2.5 years Ford delivered my Maverick to the dealership. I told them I did not want it. It was exactly the same as yours except a Lariat. I'm enjoying my TRD 4runner. Bummer dude.... I hope it's fixed ASAP for you to use it for work.

I have a hybrid on order on my second year now waiting. I have an awd lariat eccobost while I’m waiting got in February and already have 15k on it. After following you my 30 a year doesn’t seem like much. I was really hoping to get 200k on it. Hope yours is an easy fix
The hybrid is probably much more reliable, transmission wise, although only time will tell. It has an eCVT, which isn't like standard CVT transmissions, it uses a planetary gear set making it much simpler. Toyota has used the same set up in their Priuses for a long time and it's pretty tried and true. Also have to point out, abusing your vehicle and then calling it unreliable when it breaks doesn't make much sense. Waiting til 80k miles to service the transmission is crazy. Especially since Ford isn't known to make good automatics for their Ecoboost lineup

Hoping it’s not too crazy, 80k miles is a LOT for 2 years you’ve driven it. Ford has different recommendations for vehicles with severe usage so they last longer. In the worst of months I was able to put 3k miles in 2 months in my old Nissan.
Yes change the ptu fluid. Seems all Fords need that at around 30k to 40k... Saves you money in the long run! Just change it and take it to FORD. Because of the codes!
Hope you get it figured out but I doubt the transmission is super heavy duty in the Maverick. Pretty much just adequate and doing a lot of towing, hauling and normal truck stuff I have a feeling will reduce the life of these transmission’s. Mind you I ordered a 24’ as well but I do not plan on heavy mileage and towing and hauling. Nothing is made like it used to be unfortunately. Hopefully it’s a quick fix and a fluid change takes care of it. Good luck.
I don't know anything about cars really, but it could be that its misfiring and you need a tune up and a spark plug change. Had a 2009 Honda civic hybrid shifting funny after about 150,000 miles and took it into the dealership and they said it needed new spark plugs and a tune up. After that it seemed to be running better. Just throwing that out there.....for what it's worth....best of luck my man....

Check your engine oil and replace it if it is dark brown. Change your transmission fluid and spark plugs if you haven't done so yet. If it has a crankshaft/torque sensor you might want to replace it too, those only last up to 100k miles only. If you don't use chevron gas or at least add fuel line cleaner every 20 or 30k miles, then your fuel filter might be all clogged up and not allowing sufficient fuel flow. To me it seems like a crankshaft torque sensor issue. Synthetic engine oil will last up to 5k miles. Transmission fluid best to change it every 50k only, regular motor oil no more than 3000. Spark plugs, change them every 50k miles. Change crankshaft torque position sensor and fuel filter every 100k miles if you're a careful car loving grandpa driver or every 50k if you're a hardcore off road guy, 75k for anything between a grampops and beast mode. And don't forget changing that coolant every 50k too. Don't beat up your car and you'll save yourself so much trouble. Be a Harold and always keep your life in preset mode.
Obviously it's nothing catastrophic to the vehicle if you can still drive. Change the transmission fluid, and then change it again. Get the PTU serviced. I'm willing to bet it'll be fine.
Change my ATF, PTU and RDU fluid at 10k miles. Less than 100$ for all the fluid. Will probably do it every 20k. Its easy. You should have done it a long time ago.
@@jay.0621 Power Transfer Unit. It attaches to the transmission and transmits power to the rear wheels. Ford's are notorious for them failing. However I don't think it's because they are junk, it's because the fluid is never changed.
Changed my tranny fluid, ptu fluid n rear diff at 15k. Ptu n rear diff were very gross black n had lots of metal. Rear diff magnet had 1/2" of metal slime on it. * I don't smash throttles, drove very mild up to 10k n maybe Floored it 3 times since then.*... So good luck on those fluids looking anything but terrible. My tranny fluid was still solid. I got scared when I did ptu/rear diff n thought " no way in hell this tranny is going to look good". I know break in occurs, but wow my rear ptu had me worried.
@@jay.0621 Power transfer unit. In Ford they have a transfer case that attaches to the transaxle and sends power. Think of it as a front differential. Recommend service PTU change at 30K (Rear differential too). If you have a hybrid maverick, they don't have the PTU part, so you don't have to worry about it.

In regards your transmission i almost lost it when you said you have not service your transmission and currently at 85,000 miles...OMG OMG!!!! I'm sorry hopefully its shifting due to a clogged transmission filter if it has one or a shift solenoid. Personally I service my transmission every 15,000 miles. Never do a transmission flush. If you dont know what thay is. Thats what a dealerships or AAMCO Transmission will use a machine and pump out old transmission fluid then pump in new ATF fluid under heavy heavy pressure in some to most cases IS NOT good on your transmission due to high pressure pushing old fluid brake down ans tiny Metal particles throughout your transmission that can cause to shift hard like the situation that you're having now for example. I highly recommend transmission service every 15,000 just like a oil change. DRAIN AND FILL ONLY AND if the Ford maverick has a transmission filter change it as well just drop the transmission pan. By doing drian and fill loke a oil change. You are protecting your transmission for the long run 200k 300k 400k miles. Knowing you have that clear cherry red color fluid making your vehicle shift very smooth like the day you purchase it. Hopefully its a minor issue and keep us updated. Perhaps call a local transmission or mechanic shop and ask them. Do you provide transmission service. Just drian and fill and if needed transmission filter. No transmission flush... dont do it no matter what they say. For example my oldest vehicle is a 2006 Toyota Sequoia 4WD 4.7L V8 engine currently just hit 219.000 miles. Oil change every 3,000 miles and transmission service drain and fill evey 15,000 miles. NEVER DONE A TRANSMISSION FLUSH.
I have a 2007 scion tc with a 5spd manual with 128k miles and ive neber changed the gear oil.... Im afraid changing it now will make ot start to slip. Anyone have suggestions?
Check your transmission fluid and ptu fluid & scan tool before you do all that test driving. You already know the problem is hard shifts stop making the vehicle hurt itself.
This is really scary for me I’ve been following this guy cause he has the most miles on his maverick and I own a Nissan Altima trying to move to Ford Maverick because of the bad CVT Nissan makes and now he’s having the exact same problem my Altima is giving me..
Maverick/Focus and Escape are all the same vehicles with body swaps. The automatic trans has had massive issues in all of those for close to a decade now and Ford (aka Driver Returned On Foot) still sells them. SMH. My daughters Focus went through 4 transmissions in 83k miles. There’s a class action lawsuit over this but don’t if it ever went anywhere, she got rid of that POS before that became anything or if it did become anything. Should’ve done your homework before buying.
Why would you wait until a 1000,000 miles to change your transmission fluid? You should have changed it at 60K and 61K then every 30K. You're actually doing more damage by driving and driving. WoW 😒
It's clear you don't take care of your truck. Driving thousands of miles knowing the transmission is having problems, cracked windshield, mess of an interior (what's the cable on the floor on the driver's side?). Why would Ford cover it under warranty when it expired 20,000 miles ago? Parts fail on all vehicles, 80,000 miles in a couple of years is a lot of wear and tear. So just man up, get it fixed and pay for it.
Love my toyota 4runners I have 2 of them, a 2014 with 316k miles and a brand new one I recently picked up. Not a squeak especially from the old one. Engine, tranny everything runs smoothly considering the off road abuse on the 2014. I would never buy a ford again. I used to buy fords all the time and they were good for 60 to about 90k miles thats it! Fords are trash!
This my 2nd one. I have a gen 3, limited model. She was a beauty, lifted with Bilstiens, k02s. Hated to see it go it had 260,000 I picked it up at 50,000 I loved it. My new one is a TRD, it's white with black wheels. I just happened to find Hot Wheels made that one for the boulevard series. LOL.... HOT WHEEL! funny.
Or maybe when you put your truck through severe abuse, and the owners manual says to change the fluid at 30k if it's severely abused, don't wait until 80k 😂.
My mom had a friend who bought a brand new Toyota. The engine blew at around the 20k mile mark because she never changed the oil. You gotta maintain things man, all cars break if you don't, doesn't matter what the brand is.

I can't believe the dealership wants $90 for oil change alone. Ive always done oil change myself.

A 2022 with 80k is very severe usage... should have followed the interval in the manual and changed fluids around 30k
Nope...... Follow the service manual. Ford uses very good fluids when new. Maybe cut it short a little just for peace of mind that's all

I got my tranny in my 22 maverick xlt hybrid replaced at 25k miles and it cost about $15k but is under warranty. Good luck on your repair.

It’s a Ford escape underneath, check out why they don’t go past 100k without major issues. People unfortunately are getting the Ford treatment, fix or repair daily. Good luck
I have a hybrid on order on my second year now waiting. I have an awd lariat eccobost while I’m waiting got in February and already have 15k on it. After following you my 30 a year doesn’t seem like much. I was really hoping to get 200k on it. Hope yours is an easy fix

The hybrid is probably much more reliable, transmission wise, although only time will tell. It has an eCVT, which isn't like standard CVT transmissions, it uses a planetary gear set making it much simpler. Toyota has used the same set up in their Priuses for a long time and it's pretty tried and true.
Also have to point out, abusing your vehicle and then calling it unreliable when it breaks doesn't make much sense. Waiting til 80k miles to service the transmission is crazy. Especially since Ford isn't known to make good automatics for their Ecoboost lineup
@@johnfoxsmith2077Oh for sure, the hybrids will be the ones lasting 300k easily 20 years from now. There was a wiring harness issue early on, but that's since been resolved.

Hoping it’s not too crazy, 80k miles is a LOT for 2 years you’ve driven it. Ford has different recommendations for vehicles with severe usage so they last longer. In the worst of months I was able to put 3k miles in 2 months in my old Nissan.
Yes change the ptu fluid. Seems all Fords need that at around 30k to 40k... Saves you money in the long run! Just change it and take it to FORD. Because of the codes!

Hope you get it figured out but I doubt the transmission is super heavy duty in the Maverick. Pretty much just adequate and doing a lot of towing, hauling and normal truck stuff I have a feeling will reduce the life of these transmission’s. Mind you I ordered a 24’ as well but I do not plan on heavy mileage and towing and hauling. Nothing is made like it used to be unfortunately. Hopefully it’s a quick fix and a fluid change takes care of it. Good luck.
The e-cvt in the hybrid is a super reliable transmission. Many of us hybrid owners tried to warn ecoboost owners about potential issues.
I had the same problem at 9k miles in my Maverick before I sold it.

I don't know anything about cars really, but it could be that its misfiring and you need a tune up and a spark plug change. Had a 2009 Honda civic hybrid shifting funny after about 150,000 miles and took it into the dealership and they said it needed new spark plugs and a tune up. After that it seemed to be running better. Just throwing that out there.....for what it's worth....best of luck my man....

Check your engine oil and replace it if it is dark brown. Change your transmission fluid and spark plugs if you haven't done so yet. If it has a crankshaft/torque sensor you might want to replace it too, those only last up to 100k miles only. If you don't use chevron gas or at least add fuel line cleaner every 20 or 30k miles, then your fuel filter might be all clogged up and not allowing sufficient fuel flow. To me it seems like a crankshaft torque sensor issue. Synthetic engine oil will last up to 5k miles. Transmission fluid best to change it every 50k only, regular motor oil no more than 3000. Spark plugs, change them every 50k miles. Change crankshaft torque position sensor and fuel filter every 100k miles if you're a careful car loving grandpa driver or every 50k if you're a hardcore off road guy, 75k for anything between a grampops and beast mode. And don't forget changing that coolant every 50k too. Don't beat up your car and you'll save yourself so much trouble. Be a Harold and always keep your life in preset mode.

It's more reliable than the Toyota Tacoma.
Obviously it's nothing catastrophic to the vehicle if you can still drive. Change the transmission fluid, and then change it again. Get the PTU serviced. I'm willing to bet it'll be fine.

Change my ATF, PTU and RDU fluid at 10k miles. Less than 100$ for all the fluid. Will probably do it every 20k. Its easy. You should have done it a long time ago.

Ford's are notorious for them failing. However I don't think it's because they are junk, it's because the fluid is never changed.
Changed my tranny fluid, ptu fluid n rear diff at 15k. Ptu n rear diff were very gross black n had lots of metal. Rear diff magnet had 1/2" of metal slime on it. * I don't smash throttles, drove very mild up to 10k n maybe Floored it 3 times since then.*... So good luck on those fluids looking anything but terrible. My tranny fluid was still solid. I got scared when I did ptu/rear diff n thought " no way in hell this tranny is going to look good". I know break in occurs, but wow my rear ptu had me worried.

@@jay.0621 Power transfer unit. In Ford they have a transfer case that attaches to the transaxle and sends power. Think of it as a front differential. Recommend service PTU change at 30K (Rear differential too). If you have a hybrid maverick, they don't have the PTU part, so you don't have to worry about it.

1sr let me say I ordered 2024 Ford maverick with same ser up as yours. In regards your transmission i almost lost it when you said you have not service your transmission and currently at 85,000 miles...OMG OMG!!!! I'm sorry hopefully its shifting due to a clogged transmission filter if it has one or a shift solenoid.
Personally I service my transmission every 15,000 miles. Never do a transmission flush. If you dont know what thay is. Thats what a dealerships or AAMCO Transmission will use a machine and pump out old transmission fluid then pump in new ATF fluid under heavy heavy pressure in some to most cases IS NOT good on your transmission due to high pressure pushing old fluid brake down ans tiny Metal particles throughout your transmission that can cause to shift hard like the situation that you're having now for example.
I highly recommend transmission service every 15,000 just like a oil change. DRAIN AND FILL ONLY AND if the Ford maverick has a transmission filter change it as well just drop the transmission pan. By doing drian and fill loke a oil change. You are protecting your transmission for the long run 200k 300k 400k miles. Knowing you have that clear cherry red color fluid making your vehicle shift very smooth like the day you purchase it. Hopefully its a minor issue and keep us updated. Perhaps call a local transmission or mechanic shop and ask them. Do you provide transmission service. Just drian and fill and if needed transmission filter. No transmission flush... dont do it no matter what they say.
For example my oldest vehicle is a 2006 Toyota Sequoia 4WD 4.7L V8 engine currently just hit 219.000 miles. Oil change every 3,000 miles and transmission service drain and fill evey 15,000 miles. NEVER DONE A TRANSMISSION FLUSH.
I have a 2007 scion tc with a 5spd manual with 128k miles and ive neber changed the gear oil.... Im afraid changing it now will make ot start to slip. Anyone have suggestions?

Check your transmission fluid and ptu fluid & scan tool before you do all that test driving. You already know the problem is hard shifts stop making the vehicle hurt itself.
This is really scary for me I’ve been following this guy cause he has the most miles on his maverick and I own a Nissan Altima trying to move to Ford Maverick because of the bad CVT Nissan makes and now he’s having the exact same problem my Altima is giving me..

Maverick/Focus and Escape are all the same vehicles with body swaps. The automatic trans has had massive issues in all of those for close to a decade now and Ford (aka Driver Returned On Foot) still sells them. SMH. My daughters Focus went through 4 transmissions in 83k miles. There’s a class action lawsuit over this but don’t if it ever went anywhere, she got rid of that POS before that became anything or if it did become anything. Should’ve done your homework before buying.

It's clear you don't take care of your truck. Driving thousands of miles knowing the transmission is having problems, cracked windshield, mess of an interior (what's the cable on the floor on the driver's side?). Why would Ford cover it under warranty when it expired 20,000 miles ago? Parts fail on all vehicles, 80,000 miles in a couple of years is a lot of wear and tear. So just man up, get it fixed and pay for it.

Love my toyota 4runners I have 2 of them, a 2014 with 316k miles and a brand new one I recently picked up. Not a squeak especially from the old one. Engine, tranny everything runs smoothly considering the off road abuse on the 2014. I would never buy a ford again. I used to buy fords all the time and they were good for 60 to about 90k miles thats it! Fords are trash!

My mom had a friend who bought a brand new Toyota. The engine blew at around the 20k mile mark because she never changed the oil. You gotta maintain things man, all cars break if you don't, doesn't matter what the brand is.
