When you said "bezels," it took my brain a moment to process that you weren't talking about the red part. I cannot fathom how it seemed okay to put such a small screen on a "jumbo" product.
Someone else said they saw them sold at a drugstore, so the target market was probably older people lacking the dexterity and motor control to handle a small device with small buttons. Solution? Obviously solved that issue, but now let’s give it a screen too small for them to see!
I would _love_ to see this thing get modified with serious internals and a proper LCD screen with the bezel cut out. Hell, maybe even a Raspberry Pi with some nondescript extra functions

Pi Zero would be a perfect choice, everything else you need can be had for a meager sum at your local hobby store, and a battery pack could easily be sourced since it would only need 5V to run and not for very long. Or James it up and just use a USB powerbank. Pop a BTR5 in there where the headpahony jack would be, too, just hooked up as a USB DAC. Honestly, I kinda wanna give it a go, I just can't be assed to spend this much on such a novelty project.

I haven’t been to an Apple store in a while, but I remember they used to have giant models of the iPhone hanging in their front window… this reminds me of that. It’s like a scaled up model of a mini MP3 player that was meant to be seen from afar
I can actually see making it cool. Throw a RasPi in it for the screen and interface, then put something like the MINT (Meta42 is Now Tiny) in it, as well as a decent DAC (disassemble a fiio or something), throw it all in the massive case, boom, super weird but inifinitely more awesome setup
You could easily make a home media player with an appropriately sized screen and a Pi 0. Just cut the casing a little for some I/O options. Of course, you'd lose the best part, the ｂｅｚｅｌ

Full screen usage with minimal to no bezel, more sophisticated speaker, and more competent internal construction, and this might actually be a thing I look at and go “Huh. Not my kind of thing, but I can believe there’s a market for it.”

yeah, i could see a market for something like this that can work as both a high end audio player (i.e actually good audio files not just mp3) and a bluetooth speaker. it'd be pure novelty, but nothing wrong with that
I think if this was just a speaker shaped in the look of a giant ipod it could be fun as a novelty thing. But the tiny actual screen inside the giant bezel and the horrible internal speaker ruin it.
I'm pretty sure the next step would be to toss a DVD reader onto it and make it a novelty portable movie player.
