Wow 18° in the winter..basically like spring! That was amazing of the family you met to give you food & water to take with you. Really liked the little rock house & the rocky ridgelines 😊
Very cool! I knew about the closure but definitely good to know it is passable! Hare Mtn and that ridge looked so amazing! Back before Fall, I did catch a tiny bit of the OHT from Spy Rock trying to find some falls that didn't exist and holy moly it was so grown up with p. ivy. Cannot wait to see you get there! I may have to get out and have my first hike of 2023 tomorrow. :) Aterthought: Herrod's Creek. We made it just before Herrod's and had to turn back because it was so overgrown. I had to go find my map! We went all of 2 miles in and 2 back from the trailhead on Morgan Mtn. Awesome views from there and we love camping along that road!
Thank you, JR! Yes, the stone house is super cool and I actually walked right by it without seeing it when I did the trail the first time three years ago, so I am glad I was able to see it this time. On my original 15-day schedule (before my flight was cancelled, effectively shaving three days off my agenda) I was supposed to camp in that stone house! Oh, well. Perhaps another time! 😊

I’m close to 40, and have body pain when I sleep on the ground, even with a good mat. Did you experience that when sleeping with your bag directly on the ground?
Hello, Lacey! I'm excited for you and your upcoming hike of the OHT! Best of luck with that! To answer your question, no, I did not endure any discomfort, stiffness or pain when sleeping directly on the ground, as I did. I can sleep anywhere, it seems, on a rock, amid loud noise, just doesn't affect me. ''No dimmer switch,'' my ex once said about me. Full force on, or dead asleep. I don't have any suggestions for you with regards to sleeping more comfortably, I apologize!
