Anamorphic desqueeze!!!!!!! I forgot to tell them I wanted that on all their video centered and hybrid cameras during our feedback sessions at camera camp. I’m so glad they were already working on that. Now we need shutter angle lol

Oh come on now. The A7sIII is significantly less expensive than the A7sIII. You cannot expect it to get everything the FX3 has. It's in a different product line. Just buy an FX3 if you want the features it has.
Just because it can do it, doesn't mean it's supposed to get it. They're two different products for different markets. A cinema camera doesn't have to have the same features as a hybrid camera.

Fun to see Sony playing catch-up to the S5II 😁 At 4:20, did you reframe or does the desqueeze crop for some reason? It punched in from the original unsqueezed image. Slate metadata definitely is nice; it's one of the things I love most about using the BMD Video Assist.

I’m mostly poking fun because I can (for a change). There are of course several other LUMIX cameras that are Netflix approved, both in full frame and MFT. I have NOTHING against Sony. They make excellent cameras. It’s just fun to get to poke a little bit.
Great update and very well presented. But too late for me. I own a1 and fx3 and I am deeply dissapointed about Sony’s update sttrategy. Too late, too little, and in the case of a1: nada. Will not invest in Sony anymore, moving back to Pana.

4k DCI QUESTION: After installing the update the DCI is the exact same field of view as the UHD with the top and bottom cropped off. Is the DCI a one to one read of the sensor or sampled down like the UHD? Also the filename looks so out of place always over the image when everything else is in the black bars.
So basically we now have sony crop 1800$ camera (fx30) that is getting better than a7siii, 3500$ ff camera. Well done Sony. I really don't understand why a7siii is forgotten when it comes to updates. 9 years ago I had 24p, DCI 4K and other stuff on GH4. Now with phase detect AF finally on Panasonic I'm tempted to go back. Panasonic was always giving everything they had, such a great company.
While I applaude Armando's video he is not being accurate. Sony is definitley NOT listening to Sony a7s iii users. There has been no significant update in 2 years. S - cinetone is not major. If I would have known that Sony was going to leave the A1 and the A7s iii in the dust, while upgrading less expensive or similar cameras, I would not have bought into the Sony ecosystem. Canon, Nikon and Pansonic update flagship cameras faster and more reliably than Sony is attempting NOT to do with the a7s iii.

Some solid updates, especially the breathing compensation, but really wish they added shutter angle. Feels like something that should just have been there from the start
For a Cinema camera is still missing very BASIC features, features you get on a Lumix for example for half the price. Shutter angle, open gate, and features that have should've been here since the beginning. Great video as usual
Open gate is only possible on smaller 4:3 sensors such as Alexa mini or Panasonic GH cameras. The full frame sensor on FX3 covers a vertical height that is equal to or greater than s35 sensors in open gate mode.
@@mathiastegtmeier9714 Open Gate simply refers to using the entire vertical and horizontal view of the sensor. Has nothing to do with sensor size or ratio of the sensor. Open gate is typically 3:2 (Arri started this on the Alexas), but again the ratio doesn’t matter so long as it’s capturing the full height and width of the sensor. Some sensors are 3:2 and can shoot open gate at that ratio, or shoot in an anamorphic 4:3 ratio cropping in on the sensor, as well.
100% agree. After all, the Panasonic S5mk II already has all these things, DCI, waveform, shutter angle, spot metering, (No false color), but you can get a false color LUT that works really well for viewing Log footage. All these features makes getting correct exposure on Panasonic really a dream. Why has Sony not incorporated these things? Panasonic has been offering them standard for years.

I’ve shot tests with it against Alexa, red, BM, canon, (all set to shutter speed and not angle) and in scenarios like a house with LED lights the fx3 is the only one to flicker. I love the camera and bring it most places I go, but this is annoying
Panasonic had shutter angle, DCI 4K, and 24.00 FPS all the way back in late 2017 with their GH5, and while I feel that Sony's FX3/30 firmware update is a step in the right direction, it is too little too late and the only reasons I'm still considering FX30 include autofocus performance, lens size, weight, and power zoom lenses
...I'm VERY glad you got to speak on some of these issues with the Sony Reps, but I would LOVE to know: Did Sony acknowedge the need for them to update the A1, nevermind the A7SIII when you spoke to them? You can't declare 'flagship' cameras and not update them as such... I'm an A1 owner who has stuck with Sony since the 'OG' A7 and all it's issues lol! 😳🤦😀😅
Hey Armando! Nice video! My rule of thumb is: If the firmware fixes bugs or a bad interface, we should expect that. Not all companies do this (or do it well), so we should appreciate it, but really it’s a base expectation. The device isn’t functioning as advertised, so they fix it. When an update adds features, we should be really happy because we are getting more than we paid for. It makes me happy when the manufacture expands the functionality of the device I purchased. Of course, when a manufacturer promises features in a future update, we should expect that update those features-the company is only doing what it promised to do. Then there is the question of crippling a camera to differentiate product tiers. I understand the thinking behind this, but it’s kind of bullshit if the capability is there but crippled by the software. (I don’t think that’s necessarily the case with the FX3. I think the software development was lagging and Sony released the camera when it was good enough.)

FYI that extra real estate doesn't exist on the FX3 and FX30 for DCI 4k. Because they're already oversampled downscaled to UHD, it just crops the top and bottom, instead of extending the sides.
If the A7SIII and the FX3 are going to diverge, thats fine. BUT! The A7IV has breathing comp!! The Alpha line premium cameras (A7SIII & A1) should get this feature at the very least
Lol...people love to complain about Canon cripple hammer but this is just another version by Sony. They want you to buy the latest models to get basic features. Lower end models sometimes get more features than higher end ones....a6400, fx30 etc etc. It's well known at this point that Sony has the worst firmware updates of all of them....
Great update! Only one thing missing, you can't do 4k external recording while being on cine ei mode (slog) if you wanna shoot log while doing external recording you gotta change a picture profile and customize it to make it slog,or external raw. That's a big issue of this camera I think.
Been sitting on the fence for either the A7SIII or FX3 but would probably go for the panny S5m2 for tools missing. The 16bit color depth is one I love from Sony. Canon has only 12bit and Panasonic I believe 10bit. Coming from MAGIC LANTERN, we're pretty much spoiled with all the cinematic tools like waveforms, histograms, zebras, and more. Plus 14bit colour depth in RAW. Shutter angle is also available for years now as well as Intervalometer, anamorphic utilities and simulations, 2.35/2.39 aspect ratios. But I'd love to have the Sony autofocus and low lights. Guess I'll have to wait a few more?

The FX3 not having Open Gate is unbelievable. You have a cinema camera with a 3:2 sensor and you can't use all of it? Even hybrid cameras by Panasonic and Fuji have it, Sony is simply riding on autofocus as if it was all that matters
When I bought my FX3 (also 2 years ago) everyone asked me why I didn’t just get an A7siii. I’d like to say I had a feeling something like this would happen but the reality was Im a DP so I got the more video focused camera. Glad that I clearly made the right choice
Where is the Camera ID setting on FX6? Can't find from mine. Only able to find Title Prefix and (Clip) Number Set, under TC/Media > Clip Name Format. I'm on V3 and so far that is the latest for FX6
Great update overview! To your last point, I do believe these updates are a thing that should be celebrated given the fact that Sony is a HUGE company who doesn't HAVE to listen to its customers. When we bought our cameras we knew that they didn't come with certain aspects however, we still made that choice to buy. Since this is the case, our expectations should be in line with what was advertised. If we bought the camera and Sony said "future updates will include x" and that didn't happen, then we could argue that they aren't doing what they should do. Thanks for posting this great video! I greed on Sony releasing updates that feels like should have been done a year ago. But surely welcome what’s encompassed in this update. Time will tell if we get a camera that matches closer the FX higher tier. I Will be testing the DCI against FX6 and see if it’s closer than before regarding color and picture profiles. Pocket 4K had all this plus internal Raw recording, Pro-Res recording, SSD recording, ability to imput LUTS, false color, amazingly simple menu system, no overheating issues and probably 10 other things I'm missing.
@@markr041 gh5 is not a cinema camera and have more cinema centric features than camera who is part of cinema lineup from Sony. I know other cinema cameras which has no autofocus, like Arri and Red, and nobody is complaining. Maybe the problem is not in lac of autofocus, but in real skill of a filmmaker?!
When I spoke to Sony about shutter angle they told me it is on the top priority on their list so take that with a grain of salt.

I miss my S1H. Getting a great image and colorgrading vlog was superior to my fx6. Will be switching back to panasonic with s1h ii

Focus breathing comp is what i extremely want for a7siii. Anamorphic desqueeze would be also cool since I woul not need to buy monitor seperately

No one mentions the fact that the DCI 4K setting doesn't allow you to shoot RAW with an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja.

Did you know with cine EI you can not longer record 4k externally? Do you happen to know why?
Great update! Only one thing missing, you can't do 4k external recording while being on cine ei mode (slog) if you wanna shoot log while doing external recording you gotta change a picture profile and customize it to make it slog,or external raw. That's a big issue of this camera I think.
I haven't upgraded to the previous firmware or current for this reason

The de-squeeze is just for preview the image or you can recording with the footage all ready de-squeezed without doing anything in postproduction???

Been sitting on the fence for either the A7SIII or FX3 but would probably go for the panny S5m2 for tools missing. The 16bit color depth is one I love from Sony. Canon has only 12bit and Panasonic I believe 10bit. Coming from MAGIC LANTERN, we're pretty much spoiled with all the cinematic tools like waveforms, histograms, zebras, and more. Plus 14bit colour depth in RAW. Shutter angle is also available for years now as well as Intervalometer, anamorphic utilities and simulations, 2.35/2.39 aspect ratios. But I'd love to have the Sony autofocus and low lights. Guess I'll have to wait a few more?
I went from Magic Lantern to Panasonic and it was a smooth as butter transition for me.

The FX3 not having Open Gate is unbelievable. You have a cinema camera with a 3:2 sensor and you can't use all of it? Even hybrid cameras by Panasonic and Fuji have it, Sony is simply riding on autofocus as if it was all that matters

When I bought my FX3 (also 2 years ago) everyone asked me why I didn’t just get an A7siii. I’d like to say I had a feeling something like this would happen but the reality was Im a DP so I got the more video focused camera. Glad that I clearly made the right choice

Where is the Camera ID setting on FX6? Can't find from mine. Only able to find Title Prefix and (Clip) Number Set, under TC/Media > Clip Name Format. I'm on V3 and so far that is the latest for FX6

To your last point, I do believe these updates are a thing that should be celebrated given the fact that Sony is a HUGE company who doesn't HAVE to listen to its customers.
When we bought our cameras we knew that they didn't come with certain aspects however, we still made that choice to buy. Since this is the case, our expectations should be in line with what was advertised.
If we bought the camera and Sony said "future updates will include x" and that didn't happen, then we could argue that they aren't doing what they should do.

I greed on Sony releasing updates that feels like should have been done a year ago. But surely welcome what’s encompassed in this update. Time will tell if we get a camera that matches closer the FX higher tier. I Will be testing the DCI against FX6 and see if it’s closer than before regarding color and picture profiles. So funny, my Gh5 have DCI 4K, shutter angle, and true 24 fps, anamorphic mode, waveform and vector scopes since 2018.
I say this all the time. That camera was so far ahead of its time. I still have it.
Pocket 4K had all this plus internal Raw recording, Pro-Res recording, SSD recording, ability to imput LUTS, false color, amazingly simple menu system, no overheating issues and probably 10 other things I'm missing.

Not as funny as the truly terrible GH5 autofocus.
@@markr041 gh5 is not a cinema camera and have more cinema centric features than camera who is part of cinema lineup from Sony. I know other cinema cameras which has no autofocus, like Arri and Red, and nobody is complaining. Maybe the problem is not in lac of autofocus, but in real skill of a filmmaker?!
