This was a huge missed opportunity too. Cuz the ENTIRE book everyone, even the main characters think Krum is some stuck up playboy, but this moment with Harry shows that he’s actually insecure and shy, and him and Harry actually end up bonding a bit. Harry is Krum’s first friend who didn’t care about his Quidditch Stardom.
To be fair Harry didn’t have a normal life by wizard standards. Raised by abusive muggles after his family was murdered, got famous from not being murdered as a baby, suddenly thrown into the wizarding world without warning, then spending most of his adolescence trying not to get clapped by the Dark Lord who for some reason has declared a child as his nemesis. I don’t think he had the time for normal things like becoming a devoted Quidditch fan 😂

Viktor was actually an amazing human being. Had Harry said he was interested in Hermione he would have backed off instantly. Even when he found out about Ron he still backed off and just became a long time friend of Hermione, just dropped any chance at romance.

Viktor saw pretty ladies drool over him all the time, but Hermione was just a good person to him (and being muggle born, didn't really have the hype). Viktor was the FIRST person to tell her how special he thought she was.
Yeah, I think you're on point with that. Yet, paradixically, even if Hermione was nerdy and not-caring about her looks, Krum was like the first one to perceive her as a woman and not as a geeky friend that knows all the answers and helps us with homework. Also, that characteristics of "not needing to chase after someone" or simply not being desperate is helluva attractive and that is what strikes Krum about her. Firstly, when we see Krum being chased by these women, Hermione comments on it rather negatively, being suspicious of him walking around the castle like that and those girls being after him... But maybe she already thinks of him like those girls do, but she's just not willing to do the same thing. She's got her life, her passions, and a friend in need to stay alive in the tournament. However, when it is Krum who approaches her, she's all in for it. The tragedy, sadness and loneliness of Krum, international Quidditch star, is on point too. He's still a kid, young man, a teenager. Kind of gives off that Draco's vibe, but with more self-reflection and humility - Draco's is rather compensating his needs for attention and warm from the parents by taking advantage of other people and being arrogant. Great to see him change later on too.

okay i really really dont mean to burst your bubble here and it probably isnt a good idea to say something that might start an argument but theres a key detail about krum that everyone just seems to forget… and thats the fact that he is 18 while hermione is 14. Its easy to forget because “aw cute romance” but uh, hermione has barely hit puberty while krum is literally about to be an adult. Four years may not seem like a big deal but when you are a teenager it absolutely IS. ESPECIALLY considering the fact that Krum is famous and financially stable while hermione.. isnt? They also didn't attend the same school but that's neither here nor there. I'm not trying to say Krum was sexually abusing her, because you are right, he never made her do anything she didn't want to do and they only kissed once. Yet, it's still weird. Sexual abuse isn't the only risk with those kind of relationships. Power imbalances are very incredibly bad for mental health and an age difference is probably one of the worst power imbalances. It would be so easy for Hermione to idolize Krum, and even if they had both had pure intentions and hermione was smart and krum was kind it would still be dangerous because of that age difference.

Have you thought about the fact that Viktor Krum cares more about a 14year old girl he just meant a few months ago more than anyone else, this means no friends or family that he cares enough about. For Cedric it was his girlfriend, Harry his best friend (practically brother) and for Fleur her sister, yet Viktor Krum cares more about this girl than anyone he has ever met. Edit: We're forgetting the wizards can apparate so they could have easily gotten Krums parents and all his friends were already at Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament
Fortunately Hermione is 15 when they meet since she's almost a year older than Harry so the age gap with Krum is not as creepy xD But yes it would be a bit sad although I think it's not really "the person most dear to you" like the song says, that's just a poetic exaggeration, they just use whoever is available closely. Since Fleur didn't really care about anyone here they had to get her sister but Krum at least genuinely cared about Hermione.
Don't forget how Karkaroff only treats him special because of his skills, and he is 100% aware how people's love only last until he wins games (he's not even good-looking). His entire life is like an illusion made on marketing and fame. He loves Hermione so much because he knows she can see through all this bs. He is also a child talent milked for business and possibly overworked. I always assumed that by how he had to spend so much time on the broom he has problems walking on solid ground, also he can barely socialize with people because that side of him could never develop in a healthy way, exactly a thing very well sheltered and overworked child talents experience. Then again a thing he loves Hermione for, cause Hermione is a very hard-working, talented witch, who has shown difficulties fitting in at a younger age!
I mean, that is the impression that everyone else got of him at first on the books took and then you as the reader get to actually spend some time with him and realize he is just socially inept. It's like the movies stayed on that phase of the character and never bothered to go beyond.

It was a real testament at how good a person was, that the _only_ reason harry coud find to dislike him, and even that not for very long, is because he was able to ask Cho out faster then Harry did. And even after that, you didn't get the feeling he actually _disliked_ Cedric, he was just salty about Cho.
My boy! But for real. Even the most minor characters got properly fleshed out by teams of editors and supportive writers in the books after the third, but the movies went backwards and dumbed them down for screen time and for (very mild girl-power vibes) political purposes.
I don't blame you. The way the movie was setting him up, I thought for sure there'd be a "surprise" twist where he's the bad guy all along. Usually teenage romance drama movies introduce jock whom the protagonist doesn't like just to make him the surprise villain. However, in the books you wouldn't think he's the bad guy because even though he's very popular, he doesn't really seek the popularity.

He's an underdog but other than that, he doesn't really have a specific personality. He plays sports but that by itself doesn't make him a typical jock. He still gets bullied, has a hard time finding a date to the Yule Ball, and he really tries to get good grades even though he doesn't.
Krum in the movies: dumb, brutish, jock, who's perfectly okay with the fact that his school is known for producing eviler wizards, and loves his fame Krum in the books: sweetheart, shows a fair amount of intelligence, hates his fame as much or almost as much as Harry hates his, attracted to girls who don't give him attention who also happen to be hated by the pureblood community (Hermione a muggleborn and Ginny a bloodtratior), and literally almost fights Mr. Lovegood because he associates the deathly hallows symbol with someone as bad/worse than voldemont in terms of blood supremacy
Or the fact that his performance during the Quidditch World Cup was completely omitted from the movie. But in the books he's quite literate and enjoys reading, and spending time with Hermione. He gets very jealous when Ron and Hermione are dancing at Bill and Fleur's wedding. Update: He also proceeds to talk about how nice looking ginny is To Harry and got upset because. Apparently, "What is the point of being an international Quidditch player, if all the best looking girls are taken?"
Well Ron took 2 to 3ish more Years to really do that :P One of the most frustrating things in the books because everyone with half a functioning Braincell knew since the second Book that they will love each other but it took waaaaaaaaay too long for them to commit to their Fate :P

I thought it was supposed to reflect the idiocy of the headmasters of both of the foreign schools: Beauxbatons' headmistress rejected Hagrid out of social norm bull, showing that she only cares about appearances and so brought only the cutest women along Durmstrang's headmaster is basically the representation of different conservative and hate groups in the world most of which treat women as weaker/inferior to men and so brought only men as a show of force.
Krum is my baby I love him so much in the book. He's shy, really sweet and is just so happy to have a friend in the books. But also a very very skilled wizard, he was critical in the Battle of Hogwarts and could defend against several death eaters at once.
If you're curious the name wasn't random. Victor Krum (the last name) is named after Khan Krum, one of Bulgaria's greatest leaders, famous for expanding the nation's territories and one of first to apply laws that were strict but just. You've got one heck of a duck there, haha :)
Honestly I can really see them connecting based on how simular they are in so many ways. I bet he'd be great at helping Harry just be normal for a little while and not force him to talk about horrifyingly traumatic events to satisfy personal curiosity, but when Harry chose to talk, he would listen and give advice to the best of his ability.
I liked the fact that in the book krum told a disguised harry that he found ginny attractive. Harry told him she had a boyfriend. Knowing damn well she was single at the moment.

They didn't have any time in GoF for side character development. To be fair, I can't imagine how I would have found any, trying to get all that action into two and a half hours. Other than cutting some major events (maybe a task or two.) But you know fans would have complained.
@@harringt100 I mostly agree, but adding a few personality traits like viktor's misprononciation of hermione's name, or other verbal / physical traits doesn't take time away from the movie. For example, quirrel's shaking voice (that definitely not the accurate term, but as a french I have no idea what it is) is a slight character trait carried out from the books, it doesn't tke time away from the movie, but it helps to define the character. Another example is maugrey's eye constantly moving, giving him a crazy appearance

Viktor Krum was an amazing Character in the Books.. first impression "grumpy Quidditch Star" and the more interactions he had with people the more it was revealed how damn nice and smart he was. He saw something beautiful in her when most people were only looking at her appearance. Even Harry apologized about how much grief he and Ron gave her about her looks, despite defending her when Malfoy teased her. Viktor saw pretty ladies drool over him all the time, but Hermione was just a good person to him (and being muggle born, didn't really have the hype). Viktor was the FIRST person to tell her how special he thought she was.
Yeah, I think you're on point with that.
Yet, paradixically, even if Hermione was nerdy and not-caring about her looks, Krum was like the first one to perceive her as a woman and not as a geeky friend that knows all the answers and helps us with homework.
Also, that characteristics of "not needing to chase after someone" or simply not being desperate is helluva attractive and that is what strikes Krum about her.
Firstly, when we see Krum being chased by these women, Hermione comments on it rather negatively, being suspicious of him walking around the castle like that and those girls being after him... But maybe she already thinks of him like those girls do, but she's just not willing to do the same thing. She's got her life, her passions, and a friend in need to stay alive in the tournament. However, when it is Krum who approaches her, she's all in for it.
The tragedy, sadness and loneliness of Krum, international Quidditch star, is on point too. He's still a kid, young man, a teenager.
Kind of gives off that Draco's vibe, but with more self-reflection and humility - Draco's is rather compensating his needs for attention and warm from the parents by taking advantage of other people and being arrogant. Great to see him change later on too.

Its easy to forget because “aw cute romance” but uh, hermione has barely hit puberty while krum is literally about to be an adult. Four years may not seem like a big deal but when you are a teenager it absolutely IS. ESPECIALLY considering the fact that Krum is famous and financially stable while hermione.. isnt? Sexual abuse isn't the only risk with those kind of relationships. Power imbalances are very incredibly bad for mental health and an age difference is probably one of the worst power imbalances. It would be so easy for Hermione to idolize Krum, and even if they had both had pure intentions and hermione was smart and krum was kind it would still be dangerous because of that age difference.
@squidpee I don't disagree that this happens but let's not project things onto kids that aren't happening. They only had a ~3 year age gap and were in the same school. It's a case by case thing where you should look at behavior and not make sweeping generalizations.

Have you thought about the fact that Viktor Krum cares more about a 14year old girl he just meant a few months ago more than anyone else, this means no friends or family that he cares enough about. For Cedric it was his girlfriend, Harry his best friend (practically brother) and for Fleur her sister, yet Viktor Krum cares more about this girl than anyone he has ever met.
Edit: We're forgetting the wizards can apparate so they could have easily gotten Krums parents and all his friends were already at Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament

Fortunately Hermione is 15 when they meet since she's almost a year older than Harry so the age gap with Krum is not as creepy xD But yes it would be a bit sad although I think it's not really "the person most dear to you" like the song says, that's just a poetic exaggeration, they just use whoever is available closely. Since Fleur didn't really care about anyone here they had to get her sister but Krum at least genuinely cared about Hermione.
Don't forget how Karkaroff only treats him special because of his skills, and he is 100% aware how people's love only last until he wins games (he's not even good-looking). His entire life is like an illusion made on marketing and fame. He loves Hermione so much because he knows she can see through all this bs.
He is also a child talent milked for business and possibly overworked. I always assumed that by how he had to spend so much time on the broom he has problems walking on solid ground, also he can barely socialize with people because that side of him could never develop in a healthy way, exactly a thing very well sheltered and overworked child talents experience.
Then again a thing he loves Hermione for, cause Hermione is a very hard-working, talented witch, who has shown difficulties fitting in at a younger age!

Was the case with Cedric Diggory too. I thought he was a villain when watching the movies but he was actually the sweetest guy in the books
fr, He was kind, loyal, fair... It was a real testament at how good a person was, that the _only_ reason harry coud find to dislike him, and even that not for very long, is because he was able to ask Cho out faster then Harry did. And even after that, you didn't get the feeling he actually _disliked_ Cedric, he was just salty about Cho.
My boy! But for real. Even the most minor characters got properly fleshed out by teams of editors and supportive writers in the books after the third, but the movies went backwards and dumbed them down for screen time and for (very mild girl-power vibes) political purposes.
I don't blame you. The way the movie was setting him up, I thought for sure there'd be a "surprise" twist where he's the bad guy all along. Usually teenage romance drama movies introduce jock whom the protagonist doesn't like just to make him the surprise villain. However, in the books you wouldn't think he's the bad guy because even though he's very popular, he doesn't really seek the popularity.

He's an underdog but other than that, he doesn't really have a specific personality. He plays sports but that by itself doesn't make him a typical jock. He still gets bullied, has a hard time finding a date to the Yule Ball, and he really tries to get good grades even though he doesn't.

Krum in the books: sweetheart, shows a fair amount of intelligence, hates his fame as much or almost as much as Harry hates his, attracted to girls who don't give him attention who also happen to be hated by the pureblood community (Hermione a muggleborn and Ginny a bloodtratior), and literally almost fights Mr. Lovegood because he associates the deathly hallows symbol with someone as bad/worse than voldemont in terms of blood supremacy
And also became such good friends with Fleur (his competitor) that he was invited to her wedding

In the English books, Ron asks Hermione who that "novel" is for that she is writing. Meaning it was a long letter. In the Dutch books, that was mistranslated as an actual romantic novel, which seemed so cute.

I thought it was supposed to reflect the idiocy of the headmasters of both of the foreign schools:
Beauxbatons' headmistress rejected Hagrid out of social norm bull, showing that she only cares about appearances and so brought only the cutest women along
Durmstrang's headmaster is basically the representation of different conservative and hate groups in the world most of which treat women as weaker/inferior to men and so brought only men as a show of force.
Krum is my baby I love him so much in the book. He's shy, really sweet and is just so happy to have a friend in the books. But also a very very skilled wizard, he was critical in the Battle of Hogwarts and could defend against several death eaters at once.

Honestly I can really see them connecting based on how simular they are in so many ways. I bet he'd be great at helping Harry just be normal for a little while and not force him to talk about horrifyingly traumatic events to satisfy personal curiosity, but when Harry chose to talk, he would listen and give advice to the best of his ability.
Krum was such a sweetheart in the books, and a great ally to Harry, I will never forget how they downplayed his character in the movies

They didn't have any time in GoF for side character development. To be fair, I can't imagine how I would have found any, trying to get all that action into two and a half hours. Other than cutting some major events (maybe a task or two.) But you know fans would have complained.

For example, quirrel's shaking voice (that definitely not the accurate term, but as a french I have no idea what it is) is a slight character trait carried out from the books, it doesn't tke time away from the movie, but it helps to define the character. Another example is maugrey's eye constantly moving, giving him a crazy appearance

Viktor Krum was an amazing Character in the Books.. first impression "grumpy Quidditch Star" and the more interactions he had with people the more it was revealed how damn nice and smart he was. And him going after Ginny at the Wedding was the icing on the Cake after he found out she was already taken.. that half joke half serious comment about being a star is worthless because all the good girls are taken :D
