I was the manager of Golds on second street from 1978-1980 along with Kent Kuehn and Bob Fisher. Great times with all the guys in this video. Wish it never would have ended.

Ric, I remember when you went set for set with Arnold pulling the long bar loaded on one end with plates, back in the early 70"s, Golds was the mecca of bodybuilding, Guys came from all over the world, Even at 79 years old I've got vivid memories of the 6 years I lived on Venice Blvd, in Santa Monica, 5 times a week I was at the gym, training was an addiction,we were drawn to that small gym on Pacific Ave I met some wonderful guys, they were the best years of my life Thanks for all the work and time you've devoted to promote the sport along with memories you've brought back to all of us old timers.

@Apex_grind562 pound for pound it was Franco I actually was right near the bench when he was lying flat benching 315 multiple times in perfect form, at least 15 reps and could have done more. Franco was compact and hard as a rock

I can vividly remember the first time walking through the 2nd street Golds Gym at 17, seeing Kent Kuhn, Robby Robinson and Mike Mentzer. It was my utopia. These men were gods to me. But mostly an immeasurable inspiration. One that carried me to becoming a national caliber competitor. Fantastic video! How I miss the golden era.

Dean Avanti, it will be. I am finishing up the rough cut, and then post production. The last four years I have dedicated a great deal of my tie to filming, and editing this passion project of mine. My POV of Gold's when I joined as a 17 year old in 1977 to the sale of the gym from Sprague to Grymkowski.

Born too late for the original golden era, but my dream of working out at Gold's Venice came true in '95. It was an unforgettable experience, but what a place this must have been 20 years prior. Now, 25 years later, even '95 seems romantic when it comes to in person experiences.

I was there from the summer of 77 until it moved back to Venice. Great video....really captured the feel. Mentzers, Manny Perry, Pete, Bill Grant, Larry Jackson.
Kent Kuhen singed me up. The place was wild. Guys would pull up in big station wagons from Pennsylvania and like they landed on Plymouth Rock. I remember the day the Barbarian Brothers first walked in looking like buccaneers. The gym was filled with guys from all over the country and world who would give up everything to live and train there.

I remember looking through the book at the great photos and I had to have that book and I took it home justifying it then that nobody at that school wanted it more than I did. Sorry Mr Wright.

I remember that Universal Bodybuilding ad. I was 13 years old and sick of being skinny. I sent for that course and you know, it was not a scam. It did steer you in the right direction...especially when you got to the final weeks of the twelve week course. It had the basics of building muscle: pumping the muscles with reps and sets, a high protein diet, and resting the body so as to let it rebuild the muscles cells broken down by the workouts. It did work. I always remember my teacher singling me out in class, saying how much bigger I was getting. Then a girl said it was in the right places. That Universal course in the comic books was great and not a waste of money like the other things. Hey, did anyone send away for those x-ray glasses so as to enjoy looking at the girls in a new, interesting way? lol

The word was that rudy worked out with sly. Stallone wore a tailored white suit and look awesome. Pete grymkowski was huge ,bigger than anyone else in the lineup, but when he posed nothing much happened.may west did a routine with the bodybuilder, must have been in her 80s but still had it. My last rememberane, leaving the show was seeing bodybuilder Don Peters and a way foxy lady, in my mind the most impressive couple ever. Don was not a great bodybuilder but had a frame like Steve reeves.i remember thinking if I reincarnate this is how I want to look. It was also an era when bodybuilders actually looked *good*. There was a sense of aesthetics even in the larger competitors (Arnold, Lou Ferrigno, etcetera). Nowadays, they simply look disgusting

I always felt Mike Katz was one of those guys who believed he was more than he was.

Kens skin did not react well to the steroids he was using.
His skin aged alot more than other bodybuilders his age.
ALL of the people featured in pumping iron were of a similiar age to Ken.
A simple search on Wikipedia confirms this.
Yet they did not age as much - especially when dealing with the skin of the face.
He was however, an excellent bodybuilder.
He retired in the 1980's, and in my opinion, he should have studied plastic surgery and learnt how to fix the reaction his facial skin was having to the steroids he was using.

horrible sound recordings (a $20 lav is all it would have taken) & the title cuts are too fast :(

@@williamyanosko4010 it's hard to when the titles rush by. And don't assume that the maker is as, apparently, fragile as yourself, when it comes to constructive criticism :)
