What this video fails to mention how surprisingly different is the feeling of driving an open convertible. The joy of driving in an open car in a sunny weather or in a hot Summer night beats all the costs, believe me!
And the stiff neck you get from looking around you. And the number of motors it can take to open a roof. Especially when one shears off, leaving the roof stuck half way up/down. And the perils of rain infiltration. And broken/torn/yellowing rear windows. And the price of a new roof. They're great when new. But second hand you're asking for it. There's no way i'd touch another one with a barge pole.
Convertibles with the roof down on a hot summer day are unbeatable. It's a whole new driving experience. But also, as convertibles generally have powerful cabin heaters, they are also lovely to drive roof down on a cold, dry winter day. Roof down driving in the summer at night is also an amazing experience. On a cold, wet winter day, they are fine too. The heater (and aircon if fitted) quickly make the cabin a beautifully warm and dry place to be. I'm on my second convertible and drive it all year round. If you can, get a two seater roadster for maximum fun.
Drive what you like. As a single man with no kids I just bought my second convertible after having sunroofs, Jeep, etc. I’d rather have a convertible it’s just better to me have fun and LIVE.
Bought an M Sport 1 series convertible back in April when it was raining, thought it was probably a bad idea at the time as I’d probably only get the roof down twice in the coming summer. Oh how wrong I was, 15000 miles later and around 5000 of that with the roof down and including 3 weeks down in the south of France, absolute bliss. My advice, go buy one
I have a Mercedes C43 AMG Convertible and it's bloomin lovely. I actually found this video to be a little negative towards open top cars which is a shame. There are a few trade offs, but these days the roof's are so much better and the noise is almost the same as the coupe.
Dude that's because you're driving a Mercedes. They make the best convertibles in the world. Other manufacturers are still struggling to reduce their cabin noise

For 2 retired petrol-heads, this had top car has no compromises, it’s a keeper. No one will ever sit in the back seats, it’s our 2 seat sports car.
My friend used to have '96 Ford Escort convertable. It was 4 seater, but it real 4 seater. I am 1.87m tall and I could fit in back seat with roof up and down. An boot space was more than good enough.
Does not look like a big car. A friend of mine used to have a Megane II CC. I happened to sit in the back sometimes. They only issue was the legroom which was really cramped but overall it was not that bad. The boot with roof up was really big actually.
Now that sounds practical. Much more practical than Megane hardtop, when you had to unload your boot if you were carrying something. I wonder how does soft top fare during the winter.

Point #11 Use sunscreen. Can't count how many times I burnt my face the first summer I had my SLK because I never though of creaming myself up just for going on a two hour car drive...
Pro tip when you buy a convertible used: Check if the top seals properly. If it doesn't run for your life, because it's gonna get damn expensive to fix.
Porsche 911 convertible and Boxster experience in Denver, CO, USA: Positives: engine sounds more prominent than coupes (positive with NA 6 cylinder engines), notaby more exciting and refreshing when driving curvy canyon roads and mountain passes than any coupe although not at level of two-wheeled vehicles (Vespa ET-50 through super bikes). Wide open views except windshield A-pillars: Negatives: convertibles that require manual snap-on tonneau covers (you'll tire of that quickly and won't bother > Audi TT first gen, Jaguar XK8, pre-liquid cooled Porsches), potential repairs of the convertible especially if back window is plastic (cheap on a Boxster, less so on 911), bigger blind spot back 3/4 view. Other: Targa, T-Top and Spider-type convertibles where you cannot look back across your own shoulders and have a fully unrestricted view are simply not enough of the convertible experience as you'll still feel more closed in although the rush of air over your head beats any sunroof. Put on your sunscreen 30 minutes before and get a wide brimmed hat unless you want to join the legions of older people with cancerous noses and ears. The Porsche 991 (modern gen) convertible is as beautiful with the top up as the coupe while prior models are not (mine included), and a hard top gives you a much bigger rear view but it doesn't make it a coupe as they can make some noises that a coupe simply would not. The Audi A5/S5 still looks like a well-made suit with the top up, and Mustangs are decent too. The convertible version of the Camaro is the only way to experience that car without it's one major vice (horrible outward visibility for the coupes, style chosen over practicality). As for comments about hair dressers, two guys looking wrong, and the other bs, ignore those jerks who likely don't have companions, nice bodies or stable employment.
Years of convertibles, then years of hardtops, and now I've come full circle with 2 convertibles.. and I'll Never buy a hartop ever again... EVER.... Nothing compares to a convertible.... Nothing....

As someone who has owned an Audi coupe and two Audi cabriolets, I find this video missing rhe most important point of owning a convertible... The Fun Factor. There is nothing like driving the coastline or hitting the twisty mountain road in the spring while behind the wheel of a drop top.
Cons: more expensive, more maintenance, more road noise, heavier and slower, less rigid, less storage space, top up visibility is worse. You'll start taking the long way home. Pros (with top down): phenomenal visibility, the sky is constantly in view, the feeling of the wind around you is unmatched, and you'll turn a lot of heads in town. Driving when the weather is nice, particularly on a starry night, is an incredible experience. Your mental health will improve because you'll choose scenic routes with less noise and traffic even though it's a longer drive.
i have a 2003 eclipse spyder GS convertible its a very fun car when its not raining. when the top doesn't leak. when the motors dont quit when the seal around the windows make proper contact so my seats down get drenched in water and i get wet when ever i want to go somewhere.. hell i wish i never even got the car. hell im paying more insurance for family sedan performance. if i had known all this before hand i would never got it.
My mom has this problem, when I first got my license i couldn’t give a fuck because the leather on her car (peugeot 307cc) gets rediculously hot, along with the aluminum gear stick. So I just put it down when it’s hot. My mom for some reason thinks it makes you look like a douche. Why she bought a cabrio to begin with is beyond me but whatever.
I'm introverted AF but always drive with the top down... I've wanted a convertible since I was a teenager and I think it's a waste not to take advantage of it as much as possible since I've actually owned one.
Longest hottest summer ever this year, drove 6000 miles with the roof down, also went to the South of France with the roof down, loved it, don’t care what anyone thinks, life’s too short:)
I was always scared to buy a convertible..now i bought my first one and only 3 small annoying things i noticed on my used audi a4 convertible 1. 2l tdi 140hp is too slow for that weight ..go with 200hp or more 2. If you're driving a 4 door car and live in the city 2 doors car a bit annoying cause of the length of them Though 4 can easily fit in but getting out from the back when the roof is on its a bit challenging.. 3. In the winter there's a bit more condensation on the windshield than expected but climate control car handle it ..just a bit slower than in limousine version
Overall i love it and im currently looking for an upgrade to even biger convertible cause we are planing on a family so it would need to be a family car too
Hey Mat, can you make a pair of top ten about cabrios? One with the most awesome, luxury, and fasters cabrios. And the other one with a top ten most economic cabrios, like Volkswagen Eos for example, or Renaul Megane Cabrio
At least for me, a well-designed sliding sunroof offers most of the enjoyment (front seat passengers only), while minimizing the downsides of a T-Top or full convertible: weight, performance, leaks, maintenance (cough, Smart ForTwo!), longevity, inconvenience.
Have you driven a convertible that's well put together? IMO, a sunroof doesn't even come close to providing the experience of driving with the top down. Yes it's a worse car with the top up, but the sheer amount of visibility you get plus the feeling of the wind all around you is unmatched. There are few things I like more than a top down drive on a curvy road when it's not hot out or a night drive under the stars.
@@jfox24 Triumph Spitfire, MG Midget and MGB, Fiat 124 Spyder, 32 Ford hot rod, BMW 323, various Jeeps, Corvette and Porsche T-tops, Mustang, Smart ForTwo, NA, NB and NC Miatas. All of them quite lovely, but all somewhat impractical and basically seasonal indulgences in the raw Canadian climate. With the exception of the Smart and to a lesser extent the Miata, most don’t allow for stolen moments on a dark December night, or between bursts of heavy rain on the highway during a thunderstorm. Those are the applications where a good power sunroof can be a real blessing, without costing you an arm and a leg or wrecking your hairstyle.
@@steverolfeca ah that makes sense. I live in Georgia (US) so it's much warmer here. I just got my first convertible last year after selling my Corolla. number 11) don't go all 'look at me iam a fireman" with the power wash on your fabric top convertible. the power of the water can damage the plastic inner layer and leave the fabric outer layer with water pressure patterns.

I have a m4 f83 with mpe as you can see in my picture. The sound and driving with open roof is unbeatable. The only thing i ve done wrong is I got the m dct instead of the manual gearbox
I daily drive the G29 Z4, wind deflector, heated seats, heated steering wheel, new climate tech, tons of diagnostics. A modern convertible is very very capable in the UK, in bad weather too. I would advise however to get a car cover when you're not driving, it's really helped keep it in good condition. Any questions about it please comment
Men .. your living the dream.. so how does it add up in daily usage ? Like groceries .. I don’t see the problem either but my wife pfff bears all over the road 😂
Just ordered an MX5 2017 Sport nav. CANNOT WAIT!!
A5hTriX no one cares
Craig Pearson exactly
A5hTriX well done👌🏽
zero fcks given

Point #11 Use sunscreen. Can't count how many times I burnt my face the first summer I had my SLK because I never though of creaming myself up just for going on a two hour car drive...
Pro tip when you buy a convertible used: Check if the top seals properly. If it doesn't run for your life, because it's gonna get damn expensive to fix.
My 1988 Ford Escort Xr3i Cabrio is my first convertible car, it's really fun and i love it, i don't think i will ever sell it.
0:51 *LESSSSS GOOOOO*
less go
Rain miserable weather = No thanks. I'll stick with a solid top
Or you can get a retractable hardtop like I have. :D
I payed 1900 euros for used 206 CC ..fun cheap car for summer and has metal roof
Dababy but with RTX Ray Tracing
All my friends say that they have tons of fun in my convertible and that alone outweighs all negatives
Brilliant, succinct review, very well composed. Thank you !
If all else fails, get hard coupe with a sunroof. Yes I agree not the same feeling but it solves the problem of getting your roof slashed
I’ll never not own a convertible lol every car I’ve had have been convertibles.. something about them is just more fun and I’m just drawn to them
Gotta have the new 4 series convertible.
I have a Toyota Solara, pretty practical for everyday use tbh
11. They are freaking awesome
DaBaby convertible the best
i have a 2003 eclipse spyder GS convertible its a very fun car when its not raining. when the top doesn't leak. when the motors dont quit when the seal around the windows make proper contact so my seats down get drenched in water and i get wet when ever i want to go somewhere.. hell i wish i never even got the car. hell im paying more insurance for family sedan performance. if i had known all this before hand i would never got it.
Love my m6 convertible 😊
Don't most people buy a convertible but never put the roof down because they're embarrassed?
Milind Dixit lol gtfo noob tell that to my 560 hp m4 nothing embarrassing over here
My mom has this problem, when I first got my license i couldn’t give a fuck because the leather on her car (peugeot 307cc) gets rediculously hot, along with the aluminum gear stick.
I was always scared to buy a convertible..now i bought my first one and only 3 small annoying things i noticed on my used audi a4 convertible
1. 2l tdi 140hp is too slow for that weight ..go with 200hp or more
2. If you're driving a 4 door car and live in the city 2 doors car a bit annoying cause of the length of them
Though 4 can easily fit in but getting out from the back when the roof is on its a bit challenging..
3. In the winter there's a bit more condensation on the windshield than expected but climate control car handle it ..just a bit slower than in limousine version
Overall i love it and im currently looking for an upgrade to even biger convertible cause we are planing on a family so it would need to be a family car too
best open top car is sports-supercar the noise from the exhaust goes into inside the car and it makes more special than hard top car
Its better to have a convertible in countries like Greece, Spain, Italy etc where the sun shines about 320 days a year...
Hey Mat, can you make a pair of top ten about cabrios? One with the most awesome, luxury, and fasters cabrios. And the other one with a top ten most economic cabrios, like Volkswagen Eos for example, or Renaul Megane Cabrio
Love these videos keep it up!! 👍first comment 👍
Thank goodness..... I've been looking for someone to tell me about weather it's safe to have one
Let's go
Next video: What you need to know when you're turned into a convertible
I'd never buy a convertible, but since mat is reviewing I'm still watching it!!
Bought a 228i off my dad who optioned it with all the handling upgrades. Storage isn't terrible, it has 4 seats, and has a power soft top that goes up in like 15 seconds when it rains. Summer is pretty much the only season where it's miserable to drive with the top down. Too damn hot.
I love mine a5 cabriolet I even sold my Audi s4 v8.
The cab was more fun to drive
Or just get a corvette with the targa style roof
Cobalt496 or get both like we did 😬😬😬😬
I’m interested in a 2003 bmw 3 series 320ci convertible. It’s a stunning car and I’m very keen on the idea. But I’m ngl, it also kind of terrifies me. Heard so many stories of people being killed instantly in convertible and how un-safe they are! Am I right to be put off by it or is it safer than what is deemed…?
How about a video on what to look for when buying a used convertible? Like Rust, Tears, Seals, and so on.
number 11)
don't go all 'look at me iam a fireman" with the power wash on your fabric top convertible.
the power of the water can damage the plastic inner layer and leave the fabric outer layer with water pressure patterns.
I really liked our Packard Caribbean!
We need to show dababy this video
I think convertible cars are for sunny countries. For example I'm enjoying my S5 convertible with open roof from April to October in Greece. 🖒
Well, I am from one of the "sunny Countries" and I dont think i will put the top down much as it gets upto 49 Celsius in summers
Swarnim Agrawal do it at afternoon or night 🖒
you need a roll bar if not installed. All of the DOA patients we have to do work ups on to get them a death certificate from accidents in open cars come in with the head in a bag. Sometimes all upper extremities. A roll bar costs 300 at the most.
Thinking about buying a VW EOS
DaBaby LESGGOOOO
Is this video about convertibles or about the Audi A5? 🤔
Matt, please please please do a 'First Car' video!!
My only car is a Mustang convertible and I LOVE it! However, it does leak sometimes when it rains.
what year is it?
Can you please explain the difference between convertible, cabriolet, roadster and spyder with selected cars.
DaBaby of course
I have E46 BMW with the optional hardtop for winter.
Not the slightest of mentions of cats. Warm, soft and comfy, my Audi A3 fabric roof rag top appears to be cat heaven for my neighbours cat.
tradeing open air with practicality vice versa
