Pretty good instruction for a basic pattern, I’m a flight instructor in real life and one suggestion I have is not to focus on trying to hold heading by focusing on the numbers so much. I always tell my students to turn to the heading and then pick a point of reference on the horizon in front of them and fly towards it, cross checking the heading every now and then. This will help them fly a straight line and also keep the eyes outside scanning for traffic.
That's why it's best to go to a real flight school and get some" Real Time" Flight instruction from a good CFI Like yourself!!! Thank you!! ( Ain't NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING!!!...)... 🐦..
We learned this same method flying SAR patterns. Flying 'by the numbers' allowed for too much drift before a pilot would realize they're way off track. Good advice there.

I've done about 100 hours of flying instruction irl and all I can say is Squirel is one great soft instructor. 👏

@@flutter8712 He misread the altimeter completely. Check that three-hand altimeter again or see my comment above/below. 30 feet. Verified via airport diagram. His QNH read just under 30ft under local baro, and the airport diagram lists RWY34 as an elevation of 32 feet at top-slope. Common sense also dictates that a sea-level airport is more likely 30 feet than 200 feet QNH.
I agree. I understand that real life instructors can be a bit cranky (after all they're putting themselves in danger for us students, and there is no pause or respawn), but calmness can go a really long way.

That's a minor mistake compared to the quality of his video.
But yeah, irl if his altimeter is 200 ft qnh instead of 20 ft, he would have had a huge gap when following altitude instructions by the AFIS.

Squirrel is the Bob Ross of sim flight instructors: "Just happy little accidents."
An easy trick for beginners to figure a reciprocal heading is the plus 2/minus 2 method.
If your heading is 270* you subtract 2 from the first number and add 2 to the second number and you get 090.
If your heading is 010 you will get 190 and so on.
this is one usefull trick, thanks because i'm learning for my written!

I would listen in awe to stories about navigating a bomber across the Atlantic using only a sextant, compass and paper charts.

Jacob Smith That doesn’t surprise me. I come from the maritime world and our instruments are different than yours. This trick is handy for when you’re not in the cockpit.
We still use dead reckoning and paper charts.
Solid trick, well done! I always did the +18/-18 method. +18 below 180, -18 above 180. But hey, different strokes, whatever is safe and efficient!
I just bought this 2 days ago. Coming from racing sims I have zero knowledge of flight sims. I’ve watched the previous videos in this series and these tutorials have been the best thing I’ve found to help me fly. I hope you continue to come up with ideas to keep making these tutorials because they have helped me immensely. Thank you very much
Everyone should realize how valuable this lesson was (is). Squirrel covered your first 10 hours of real flight lessons in 25 minutes. (that would have cost you about $2000) If it's all overwhelming, pause this video were you need to and make adjustments or notes. You get these concepts down, you really can fly anything. With other planes, just learn the same main speeds... climb, cruise and landing speeds. Eventually, use checklists so you don't forget anything as real pilots do. Great work Squirrel. Very well done.
I'm looking here at my FAA Standards Manual and Curriculum Guide for my flight students, and he's barely covered two lessons. The majority of the basic information he got right, but his overall command of the cockpit and demonstration of concepts was poor, and would have failed him out of any checkride. Not a stellar example of pilotage at the early First Stage PPL.
@@TitanTankNate Agreed, by the standards of a PPL checkride, which is done after 40 to 70 hours of flight time and 50 hours of ground school with a CFI guiding you all the way. He is introducing newbies to general aviation and you can't bog them down with the details we learned in flight school. That is what scares 85% of new flight students from general aviation. He got them in the air and helped them understand basic instrument interpretation, flight dynamics using great analogies and got them back on the ground without complications of why flaps are needed later on. He didn't cloud the instruction with carb heat or mixture adjustments. He already gets 27K views within hours and tons, tons of positive reviews. I think we have to relax and realize this is what newbies need to get excited about proper aviation instead of just "playing the game". I hope you see my point, without being critical of yours.
@@ForderLearnToFly I do see your point, completely. Actually, almost too well. After attending a "high end" (I mean no boast, they make that claim themselves) flight school and watching half of each attending class wash out or leave through attrition, I really do understand. But what I fear is Squirrel's nonchalant attitude of "hey, let's go flying, fuck the details, just fly, wheee" is going to lure students into a false sense of security. Then, when that FAA written comes up BAM the sudden realization is even more stark.
Think of it like contrast. The darkest darks make even the dullest colors brighter. If students come in even more excited about casual flight, then the realities and challenges of flight school will be even harsher. This was the problem at my flight school: excellent hype marketing vs challenges of becoming a safe, efficient pilot.
I just want to see fewer TH-camrs NOT putting the effort into a training series that they could. I would make one myself, if I had a computer setup right now, and happily teach a full PPL course. I want people to join aviation, but I want them to be prepared for the hardship, ready to be safe, and ready to take it seriously. You can be serious and have fun, but if fun is all we sell we will be in trouble when the serious part is required. Make sense?
@@TitanTankNate Makes a lot of sense. What really brings a new student into a flying school? A gift from a spouse? Extra money lying around? Maybe. There is a reason millions go to airshows every year. The love of flight. And unless they know a pilot and can hear what really happens in flight school and how hard it is to complete such an undertaking, they walk in with stars in their eyes and a love of all things flying with no knowledge of what's ahead. That's why so many leave. (wow, that's a lot of studying, testing, exact procedures, memorization, performance reviews and on and on...) I honestly think what Squirrel does, as I have done in my learn to fly courses on Udemy and Skillshare is get them going without all the roadblocks that are conventional in flight schools that scare everyone off. First flight at a flight school could be a fam flight. Right seat stuff but you are in a Cessna and thrilled to be flying. During straight and level they even give you the yoke.. (OMG!) for a bit. This is the hook, as you know. Many will sign up right then and there. I do the same thing with our open house at my sailing club. I take them for a sail and they sign up right then and there. They still don't know how to sail yet (or fly yet in this case).
So the insight Squirrel gives them is not from a CFI point of view but from a "Simmer" point of view, which is the majority of his audience. Beginner level. (what's that trim wheel for anyway) and not even touch carb heat or mixture, or primer. He is gently introducing them to more and more as he shows more and more. Last year in the Xplane 4 part series, he talks about using a field for emergency landing instead of the road for liability reasons. So they are learning and most of them will never take flight lessons but they are enjoying flying with their limited knowledge. I am on your side and I have sadly seen my peers leave flight school for money, spousal non-acceptance, learning roadblocks or just too heavy for their effort. They all loved flying but out of 18 of us from ground school, 4 of us graduated with our PPL. Sad. But that is probably a good thing. The rest of them can use a flight simulator and still love flying without a real plane to maneuver.

Nice simple tutorial for sim beginners. This is probably the first properly user friendly and accessible sim, the more people in the hobby the better in my opinion.
I agree with this tutorial for sim beginners but really, past flight simulators do the same thing, just not with the new fantastic graphics present. For those who can't fly this new sim with their current gear, you can still do these techniques with any version of flight simulator with a Cessna 172 (in FSX or Xplane). But now that you have seen this sim, you will want to go for it, I am sure.
When transitioning from level flight to ascent I was taught "PAT" - Power, Attitude Trim. Set your power for the manoeuvrer, adjust your attitute to reach a constant speed, then adjust the trim.
When levelling out of a climb / beginning a descent I was taught "APT" Attitude, Power, Trim. first set your attitude for the manoeuvrer, adjust your throttle to keep a constant speed, then focus on the trim.
Correct on all accounts! Well taught, well used.
Up the APTment, going down on PAT.
In FSX I could never trim the plane for level flight. It would always yo-yo between descending and ascending. I ended up using the autopliot out of frustration. So I'm hoping that won't happen in FS2020.
@@breytac Did you try very small taps of the trim button? Maybe you are overcorrecting trim?
On the other side I don't think that a flight can be trimmed out so it will stay on exactly the same altitude for more than a few miles.
Wind, turbulences, up and down drafts, even the torque from the propeller is constantly moving you off of your corse. So you need to constantly correct. Trim does only make the needed corrections less and soft.

I'm brand new to flying, never been around planes or anything but have always been fascinated with them and I've been watching your videos and learning as much as I can and coming from not knowing nothing at all about flying, I got my yoke and pedals today and made my first flight today! I thank you so much, you have no idea how much you have helped me, and will continue to help me. The only thing I have a little trouble with is trimming the plane, I'm sure I'll get better as this was my first day at it but I feel like I'll be getting a trim wheel add on soon lol. Fantastic series. If ANYONE has not yet set up with VR for this sim, however...you simply must. Ignore all the complaining about frame rate, etc. The experience is absolutely breathtaking---and Asobo has proven they WILL GET IT BETTER! I LOVED this sim before VR...but, I'm ADDICTED to this sim in VR. Nothing else compares, quite frankly.

Thank you so much Squirrel! Your tutorials finally got me flying and landing safely. I even landed on an old unmarked grass airstrip near historic Fort Monroe in Hampton Virginia. Took off from KORF, landed on grass strip, and made it back to KORF. Also love flying out of London City Airport flying over London Bridge! The Cessna 152 seems a lot easier to fly over the 172, and the cockpit and window views seem more expansive as well. Having a blast! Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, these are the only tutorials I have seen so far, and they are such good quality tutorials that I have bookmarked them for future reference. This series, is going to help so many people, so thank you so much for making them.
In previous videos, Squirrel has said that this sim will probably bring more people to General Aviation, meaning more will take flying lessons. With his tutorials and the great sim he is using, he will accomplish that.
This video reminds me of my first landing in a Cessna at Shobdon aerodrome around 20 years ago. The Cessna will virtually land itself if you let it. The only mistake I couldn't stop myself from making, was pulling slightly back on the yoke just before landing which set off a bunny hop landing. This came from my previous flight sim experience flying mainly fighter jets, where a slight pull back on the stick will reward you with a softer touch down. Enjoyable video!

Excellent step by step instructions!!! This is all you need to fly an airplane. Of course, if you'd like to fly like a real pilot, you'll need to take a few flying lesson hours with CFI (sometimes, it's worth to fly with different CFI's), otherwise, this video covers all the basic setups/knowledge to takeoff, fly, and land on the runway. The bonus of this video is the technique of using the Trim Tab. You don't get Trim Tab lesson from CFI after a few hours of flying in real airplane.
Fantastic work Squirrel, I have been keeping my eye on a few simmers posting content and yours is by far the most useful. I have been playing the Beta for the past few weeks and am looking forward to your tutorials later on that will hopefully cover IFR and more advanced aircraft. I was patting myself on the back so much for nailing this flight on the first try, except about 3/4th of the way into the flight I realized that I forgot to put my flaps up before take-off. OOPS!

The sim needs "shared cockpit" multiplayer functionality so Squirrel can make some extra money as a virtual CFI in the right seat with virtual student pilots!

You just earned another subscriber! I’m currently taking flight training and this is 100% true. I’m also going to practice more maneuvers on this new sim before trying it on the real thing! Remember, the more you practice either on a sim or a flying chair, the less you’ll have to pay for someone to teach you! And that will save you lots of money for your PPL
That is somewhat deceiving as you are required by FAA standards to meet "X" number of hours of BATD or AATD training, plus ground time, plus actual time, regardless of how well you fly them. However, you are correct in saying that practice in a good sim will stop you from making silly mistakes that will Unsat your lesson standards, and thus avoid repeat flights.

Great series of Videos, finally got around to downloading the game and getting my Rhino X55 stick and throttle controllers set up. Now to get some practice hours in. I particularly liked your explanation regarding the trim controls.

Honestly paul if i was gonna take up flying lessons tomorrow then id have you as my instructor you honestly should be one for real you know you would do well in that and i could listen to you all day as my teacher in that very simple but effective way to start learning on how to fly these things and it will help me when i get the game not really flown properly on fsx done multiplayer before thats about it so will give this ago when it comes out

I know absolutely nothing but am enjoying this game so much - I want to know about the flaps, how to deal with different weather/wind/visibility/altitudes/temperatures, autopilot, route planning, how the planes differ, everything.
