In terms of individual antagonists the Master is the most iconic one for the Doctor going all the way back to his introduction vs the Third Doctor. The Doctor and the Master have a long and complicated personal relationship, which adds a layer to their interactions that the Doctor doesn’t have with many other enemies and none to the same degree. The Master’s return was a big deal and they really killed it with both actors the cast to play him in his return story.
Well, the Doctor really only made one recording, but that recording was placed as an Easter egg on seventeen DVDs which were the ones Sally owned copies of.
The master was once the Doctor's friend. But while the Doctor took one path, the Master chose a completely opposite one. He shows up a ton in classic Doctor Who. I'd definately recommend going and watching some of the biggest Classic Who stories. They're great
This was great. Oh my. Everything came together. Just masterful (so to speak). The classic Who fans were so excited as we knew him, but it’s all written in a way you don’t have to in order to to “get” the story.
I watched this episode when it first aired on TV SEVENTEEN years ago, and to this day I still get the same amount of goosebumps seeing that watch and the reveal of Yana's name that I felt way back in 2007. Even watching your reaction just now, seeing you react to the revelation of Yana, ALL the chills. You're in for a treat with this finale, Emme!
Derek Jacobi has a wide range. He was terrific, just sorry his tenure was brief. Acronyms and anagrams can be wild and mind blowing! Loved the show’s use of the former. Other stories that have used those: Harry Potter, Anthony Horowitz novels, and more.
The Master = Classic Who villain who is like the Professor Moriarty to The Doctor's Sherlock Holmes. Derek Jacobi was only The Master briefly (on the show at least, his Big Finish stories are pretty great) but he remains my favorite Master. Love getting to see Jacobi go from a kindhearted Professor to scenery-chewing super villain. It was good demonstration of his acting range

It’s clever that they were able to tie the very last scene of Torchwood Season 1 and the opening scene of this Doctor Who episode. The cliffhanger is one of the best throughout the show’s history and The Master is up there as one of the best villains
I actually found this to be the most scary Dr. Who episode, the cosmic horror element of the universe dying and the people trapped at the end of time stuck with me.
22:07 Emme: The Master of what, time? Oh my dear, as if that would ever be enough. He's The Master of EVERYTHING! Finally the first appearance of perhaps the doctors greatest enemy definitely his oldest (that we know of). Is a bit ironic that he hid as a proffeser which is what ace(the last companion before the show was put on hold back in the 80s and personal favourite) used to call the doctor
My very best friend, who introduced me to Doctor Who on Iowa Public Television in 1995, and I were watching this in our mid twenties and about lost our minds when we realized what was happening. In defiance of all things God and Man and all things holy, he was back. This new Doctor had faced the Daleks and The Cybermen. They had not yet again faced The Master, and let me tell you, we had chills when he produced that pocket watch.
And this is why, to someone who's seen the classic series, "Even this thing never worked" ends up as one of the new series' scariest lines - it didn't occur to me at all that he was a Time Lord until the watch came out, but as soon as I did know I knew exactly *which* Time Lord he would be. As others have said, he's an arch-enemy second only to the Daleks, if that.
Welcome back to the Master, renegade Timelord and one time friend of the Doctor, plaguing him since 1971. In his first appearance he was working with the Nestene Conciousness / Autons who we met in S1E1 with Rose. In fact nearly all of Season 8 in 1971 was a Master vs Doctor story arc. He may not be as overtly dangerous as the likes of the Daleks and the Cybermen but no foe is more devious, if not deranged.
This was a stunning episode all around, with Jack, the Master and the end of the universe. I felt your excitement and distress, fantastic reaction and it just starting to get weird 😮😮 Martha's episodes are some of the best ones
Always liked the reveals. There's no real way anyone is going to pick on Yana's name and connect it to Boe's words, but it's still cool because you feel like the clue is there.
I mean, you probably know by now, but the Master is a CLASSIC Doctor Who Villan, just as classic as the Cybermen and the Daleks, the moriarty to the doctor's sherlock, etc etc. This story is just lots of fun, his reveal was tremendous back then, and he is such a well treated character in the show, always the most interesting plots and actors playing them.
The Master is from Classic Who. Most recently was in what was titled "Doctor Who The Movie" with the 8th Doctor. after the next two episodes as well there's a mini episode called "Time Crash" which is a decent watch.
The master is the doctors greatest foe from the classic era. He’s everything the doctor is but evil Childhood best friends and were like brothers, they went through the time lord academy together but the master took a more sinister life Regularly appearing throughout the 70’s and 80’s, more often than not working a long side the villain of the week. Yessss. The Master is another iconic Classic Who villain. Him, the Daleks and the Cybermen are, probably, the most iconic and well known DW villains. Much like The Doctor he's been played by multiple actors throughout the series.
Yeah, this one hits harder if you'd seen the classic series, because then you'd know who the Master was. The Master is an evil Time Lord. As is often said, if the Doctor is Sherlock Holmes, then the Master is Moriarty. Equally a Time Lord, equally a genius, equally has his own TARDIS... but lacking in all morals, and enjoys world domination and killing people. The Doctor's evil counterpart. (Indeed, if "the Doctor" suggests he's a healer, then "the Master" suggests he wants to tyrannise and enslave everyone.)

The Master fought The 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors countless times from then on and changed with different regenerations, each more insane than the last Long story short he was The Doctor’s best friend growing up on Gallifrey, they were like brothers but they eventually walked down different paths and became archenemies. It’s explained briefly in the next episodes about what happened to him in The Time War
The Master has been around since the Second Doctor era. Just like The Doctor, The Master regenerates. There have been a few different actors playing Master. You can always tell it is The Master when you see him no who plays him.
The master from when doctor who 1st started is his MORAL enemy nemesis only goal is to kill the doctor, I watched it from season 1 episode 1, 50+ years
If you go back to the episode 42, you will notice an early hint of who the Master is - if you listen in the final scene of Martha's mother and the blonde woman, you can hear the Masters theme music playing in the background as they discuss the election. Clever musical foreshadowing!
Sorry, Emme, but-I'm not sure where you could have seen John Simm, before, unless of course, you happened to watch the OG British Life On Mars, before this... ;)

I have met John Barrowman (Jack) and he's just as sweet and charming in real life as he is on screen.😍🥰
The Doctor has two arch enemies the Daleks and the Master.
"I hope he's gonna be ok!"
Yes! My FAVOURITE Story! You're on it! I LOVE this Finale!
welcome to the best character in doctor who the master you could say
I wish they'd kept Jacobi as the Master through this arc.
If you go back to the episode 42, you will notice an early hint of who the Master is - if you listen in the final scene of Martha's mother and the blonde woman, you can hear the Masters theme music playing in the background as they discuss the election. Clever musical foreshadowing!
Sorry, Emme, but-I'm not sure where you could have seen John Simm, before, unless of course, you happened to watch the OG British Life On Mars, before this... ;)
People feel feelings when they feel them.
This isn't the first time Derek Jacobi played the Master. He also voiced a android version of the Master in the 2003 webcast Scream of the Shalka.
Now then Doctor. Oh new voice! Hello hello (high register) hello (low register). Well anyway…
Sh*ts about to get crazy
Buckle up!!
The master is the doctor’s greatest enemy, second only to the daleks and cybermen
You Are Not Alone.
Watching people see this not having a clue that the master has been in doctor who for decades is funny.
Enter: The Master
2-parters are annoying enough, but this one has to be a 3-parter of course. I'm probably too late in saying this but don't start Torchwood Season 2 until after you finish Doctor Who Season 3. This 3-parter is kinda like a fixed point that both shows orbit around just for this brief time lol
Derek Jacobi was amazing as The Master.
The drums.
