I work in aerospace on many different types of materials like carbon fiber, fiberglass, plexiglass, high temp plastics, many types of aluminum, titanium, steels. You have saved my ass my times. the basics will take you far whether it’s boats, cars or planes. thanks again for reminding me.
Hi Pete, thank you so much for the explanation of the differences between the 2 types of sanders, I've spent the last 2 days reading specs on different sanders, and not having a clue what to buy. Your video explains this so clearly and easily, and when to use one or the other. Thank you, from UK. I love the MACH 1, and been after one for over a year now. Cheers :-)
Pete, Check out the 86 Interceptor Mustang at Streetside Classics Dallas location. It belongs to a friend and is for sale. I drove it and it is FAST! He had a clear film sealed over the paint... Interior is flawless and stock! Sleeper for sure! Thanks and keep up the good work!
Paying attention to your sander use videos... I've had that orbital file sander on my brain since I saw your video on it! Finally found a NOS Chicago Pneumatic from 1973 yesterday!! This dude is a beautiful piece of gear....can't wait to use it per your instructions!!
A sincere thank you! Informational videos like this help pass the knowledge for those like me to try and restore our own cars. Financially don’t think it would be possible without videos like this.
This is the first video I’ve watched and I am so thankful for you. I’m gonna watch more of your videos when I get the time. Awesome channel, keep up the great work!
This guy is a Artist love his videos! I am painting my 1990 Chevy 454ss and take a lot of pride in my truck and couldn’t of done it without my friend Pete! Thank you Sir!!!
Just wanted to say, thank you. I've learned alot from your video. I am painting my 1978 f150 I've been watching your videos and been following your steps on prepping my truck and it is coming along very nice. Thank you again.
i wish i had the money to restore my 85 c20 scottsdale because u r in my advice the only guy to get it done right i love love your show keep on keepin on
So for those of us that are non-production or resto shop guys working on a project or 2, how about some recommendations for cheap DA sanders, especially a short-throw/finish sander (I'm guessing that will work for power color sanding also?)? An almost 40 y/o sander that was $300something back then which may or may not be available still and if it is it would likely be outside of the complete tool budget for our projects doesn't do us much good and even the $150-700 that the common name brand (including the Mirka) short-throw DA's run are likely to break our budgets. I have an 8" bondo buster (I got lucky and got it really cheap used and it looks and works almost new), an HF long-throw style that seems OK (I've never used an expensive one to tell if it is, but honestly sometimes it feels like it cuts faster than the bondo buster), but for this kind of finish work I don't know what to try.
I just wanted to say thank you for the knowledge you put out here. I have been watching your channel for at least a year now and by far I think it is one of the best on youtube.
Not sure what this guy is talking about. You can buy both sanders with both types of "throws". It's actually called "diameter orbit" it's in the specs of each sander. Large diameter is for aggressive sanding, small diameter is for fine finish sanding.
I knew there was a reason I subscribed lol You are définitely a good source of īmformation been watching you quit a whíle I notice in one of your videos you recommended the flg4 devillbiss starter kit for beginners which I think is decent advice for north american availability but for anyone thât is gonna get serious about painting I would recommend getting the Flg 5 from Sprayguns Direct in England it comes in 1.8 1.4 and 1.3 I have 2 of them with the 3 tips It is by far the best budget gun out there only drawback is having to order from england but mine arrived fairly quick wondering if you had come across them yet again thx for ur videos
Great tip Pete I'm getting ready to paint my dads 67 mustang and was looking at hand sanding the whole car. Now at least I know it will go faster with sanding with the DA than hand sand with 180 than 400 wet
Hi why aren't you block sanding to level everything out , like your vids on the old car door , you went 80, then finished with 180? Then was ready for final primer
rich will with all the body work done on this it is pretty likely all the blocking and filling was already done. He said in the vid he’s just doing the last once over before tack, primer, base, etc.
Great Video! Thanks! I've been looking into DA sanders. Have been painting on and off for 25 years for myself. And until now, I never knew there was different throws on the sanders! I just always used a general purpose one, and didn't know it. Now I'm looking into a few good name brand DA's. Aggressive and finer. Thanks again...bob
Respirator is the most important tool you have. And then he sands everything without it on... lol. j/k. What kind of sander do you recommend for getting the car down to metal/fiber glass?
Wet sanding? Pete, my bud at the paint supply joint says "Don't wet and poly primers. They absorb moisture." He says if you're gonna wet sand use epoxy all the way or apply epoxy final sand over the the poly high build and then wet sand. Can you offer spiritual insight on this? Thanks, Larry Victoria BC
Oh yeah dynabrade hand sanders are for people who have carpal tunnel issues and the ones you want are $400-$600 each. They like your respirator are a long term life helping friend, make sure u use 3/32, 3/16 and 3/8 cut . That murky looks like the cheaper version of my dynabrade
Boss man i have question for you, i’m car detailer, what sander you recommend me for wet sand jobs and what type of sand paper and what brand you recommend thanks
Very informative! I'm gonna paint my truck and take the dents out, take it down to primer which is factory white. This will be my very first time doing this. I want to paint it black copper pearl, I know I'm taking a big risk doing this with pearl especially for a first time painter. But it's my truck so oh well. Any tips you can give me?
yes sr. this is the way i do it i lern it on the 80s so im doing the rigth way like mi friend pete thanks for your time my frind pete your friend pete!
I prefer electric sanders because I don't have a high capacity air system (yet). It seems in electric tools all you can find is random orbital sanders. What's the REAL difference between a dual action (DA) and a random orbital sander. Would it really make much difference? I have 2" (or so) DA and the action seems random depending on how much pressure and the angle you apply to it. Seems the DA is actually more random than the random.
Dual Action - Dual-action sanders are a cross between a belt sander and a disk sander, but they should not be confused with either one. A dual-action sander is a very versatile power tool that can perform some of the same functions as the other two sanders, but it is not intended as a substitute for either one
Pete, Is their an electric equivalent to the air DA sander? You are a busy man and I do not want to disturb you with what mite be a dumb ass question by calling you. I watch and learn from all your videos. I enjoy and appreciate all you try to teach. I which I had this in the 70s. Keep goin Pete
Hi, I saw another guy using a PC-XP DA Polisher as a sander for body work, I own one but never considered using my polisher due to the dust from sanding. BTW the polisher has adjustable speeds.
So he can assemble the car, get all the jambs right AND THEN paint the outside. On these early unibody cars with a lot of complicated shapes to them, you can get all the jambs right, take them apart to paint them and find that you can't get them to line up right again without modifying something which would mess up the paint if you painted them first.
They make plenty copies of that Mirka sander. Sadly the one I have doesn't have a speed adjustment but I manage. Can't wait to see that car with color on it.
Dynabrade invented the random orbital sander. I just picked up a 12,000 rpm Dynorbital sander at a pawn shop for $80.00.American made. Made in Clarence, NY. Great sander. Completely rebuildible, evrry peice replaceable. They'll last you forever.

finally someone who acually made sense between the two types of orbital sanders good job

Pete--the Mirka DA finishing sander with 180 should be followed up with block sanding with 180? The DA doesn't replace the block sanding does it?

I was having the same fitment issues with my 64' Falcon. The way that you did it is the only way to get it done and fitting right.
Great info as usual Pete, thanks for taking the time to show us good methods on the proper way to get it done
Hey Pete can I dry sand a hole car body with that type machine and prime with high build primer then wet sand with 400 or 600 , thanks my mate Pete.
Hi why aren't you block sanding to level everything out , like your vids on the old car door , you went 80, then finished with 180? Then was ready for final primer

I know this is old and may not be answered but... are you saying it's ok to go from 180 grit to wet sanding 400? or did I miss something?
I think there is always something to learn. That's why I love your videos pete.
My sander stops with too light pression. Is something i can do about this? Please help
Great video Pete...but that old school rotary wall phone really got my attention!!! Love those!!!
Pete is the man! Great stuff to watch at work and learn more AUTO PAINTING!
Thank you. Exactly what I was needing know about DA's
Anybody know if he already painted the Jambs yet? I must've missed it, dam
What air compreser do you us for the DA sander and or what psi?
What's the best thing to use to remove a bad rhyno lining job
I believe that your Mirka short throw is a copy of the Dynabrade. As usual.... Great job Pete!
Does it make sense to use these sanders when smoothing out drywall?
Respirator is the most important tool you have. And then he sands everything without it on... lol. j/k. What kind of sander do you recommend for getting the car down to metal/fiber glass?
Fellow Texan just up the road in WF love the channel man!
hi.whats the orbital throw on the mirka? 2mm or 2.5mm..thx
What grit you using
How much for orbit sanding?
Wet sanding? Pete, my bud at the paint supply joint says "Don't wet and poly primers. They absorb moisture." He says if you're gonna wet sand use epoxy all the way or apply epoxy final sand over the the poly high build and then wet sand.
Can you offer spiritual insight on this? Thanks, Larry Victoria BC
Which one is great for Sanding rough heavy rusty hot rod?
great video series, thanks. Any video or photos of the Mach 1 done?
Is there a difference between DA sandpaper and regular orbital sandpaper?
None, it's sandpaper.
My car pulls through the tunnel very easily sir
What size A DA is good for sand filler
Looks like a Dynabrade copy I have the Mirka bulldog, looks just like it. Love the vids.
Great video, I was just using both da sanders and thought the short throw was just a piece of junk. Keep up the good work!
Pete you teach us so much , god bless you for it . Keep up the great work and keep shining :)
bought my first dynabrade palm sander off a snap-on truck in 1996 so they have been around for a lot longer than you think.
Boss man i have question for you, i’m car detailer, what sander you recommend me for wet sand jobs and what type of sand paper and what brand you recommend thanks

another great lesson from the MASTER.............thanks Pete
Thanks for your vids Pete. I watch the heck out of them
Great info Pete! Question, is hand blocking better for a straighter finish as opposed to the DA?
Thanks Pete, the DA video was really helpful.
I thought you were supposed to paint on 600 grit sanded surfaces (not below that, such as 400grit)
Good video i liked and subscribed very useful and straight to the point ..
Tons of great info as always! Thanks Pete!
Thank you my friend Pete
Hope to see you soon
Good Info. Cant wait to see you paint it!
What the two letters (DA) stands for?
Dual Action - Dual-action sanders are a cross between a belt sander and a disk sander, but they should not be confused with either one. A dual-action sander is a very versatile power tool that can perform some of the same functions as the other two sanders, but it is not intended as a substitute for either one

Why paint door jams first?
So he can assemble the car, get all the jambs right AND THEN paint the outside. Where you from man?
Bone thrown brother! 😎🤘
In what world is mirka not high name brand? Arent their sanders stupid expensive?
They make plenty copies of that Mirka sander. Sadly the one I have doesn't have a speed adjustment but I manage. Can't wait to see that car with color on it.
Can't you just add an inline ball valve on the air inlet? That's all the adjustments are I believe.
I agree, way better video informative and to the point.
Typed “long throw handjobs” didn’t expect a body work video 😂
ahahahaha!!
Hutchins air Sanders are the best there's nothing else better either long throw or short throw
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR VIDEO N TIME
