    Most common Sandpaper I used the last 30 years is 40-80 (welds rust dynoglass / fibreglass )
    120 ( Feather back paint from welds and rust and Bondo)
    150 is normally a Wood grit not seen in body shops
    240-280 (smoothing out bondo and heavy duty 2 stage primer)
    320-400 feather edging and sanding down final paint and primers for paint
    400-600 dry and wet Removing runs in paint which would be followed by higher grits . Removing bad mistakes in paint and blending clearcoat on ether side of new painted panel for one long new looking paint job
    800-1000 color blending
    1000-1500 Removing orange peel and other imperfections and lowing grit marks left behind
    2000-2500 removing scratches in the paint Stone chip edging for touch up, dust and grit marks left in the paint
    3000-5000 final removal of scratches swirl marks and other These are used before rubbing compounds making the job easier for a final showroom finish ..I use 3m products in a 3 step compound, fine compound and buffing and a quick wax which my own truck had won awards

      very nice info! im looking to paint my car the paint is very nice no rust nothing but I replaced the roof panel and decided to paint the car a different tone of red , should i start sanding the good paint with 240 or 320? I guess theres no need to bring it back to bare metal if the paint is really good and solid

    I thought this was an amazing demonstration of the versatility of various sandpaper’s and also how worn pieces can be reused as a finer sandpaper. I love the lifetime VIP auto body course because I’ve made so many mistakes over the years and now I can learn from all of your wisdom and experiments . Trial and error . Thank you ☺️ Tony . Such a wealth of information.

    I have a few spots on my car that are starting to rust. After watching a lot of videos I'm thinking of going with 80, then 120, then Bondo, then 400 and just spraying with a can. I'm not looking for a pro like at the moment just something that looks good from afar. Any ideas? Suggestions? I don't have any painting equipment I'm just a dude with a garage and some free time

    I like this video it
    helped learn how to sand properly … a little heads up for
    everyone who plans on doing this. While I was doing this I had a hard time with
    all of the dust. I needed something to filter the air but I cannot use the
    typical dust mask because my safety glasses always fog up. My neighbor told me
    about a cool product the Air Commander Respirator. I bought it off of Amazon
    and it filtered the air just great without fogging my glasses. Anyway thanks
    for the great video now I have to start sanding the quarter panels yuck!

    Hi, do you use the Euro scale grits, with the P in front of the number for all your paper? I'm new to painting and I see there seems to be two main systems, the European and American grit scale. I'm not always sure what's being used in the various videos I've seen.

      Hey Man! For finish sanding with fine grit sandpaper (220 to 400 grit) to achieve a smooth and even surface finish and for a final polish or smoothing of the surface, you can use extra fine grit sandpaper (600 grit and higher). • @HowToPaintYourCar
      @HowToPaintYourCar  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Man! You can use 120 to 160-grit sandpaper to limit the rust and 80-grit or coarse paper for rough, intense rust. Make sure to remove all of the rust you possibly can. Any rust you leave will cause to the rust growth again. Know more tips on auto body and paint and get your free manual at vip.learnautobodyandpaint.com/home

    I'm about to start painting a bike with enamel spray paint. Most of it is steel but the fork is aluminium.
    I hear and read a lot of grit suggestions before priming. The most common recommendations are 320 and 400.
    What I want to know is, can I just prep both the steel components and the aluminium piece with 400 grit, OR 320 grit? Or should I do the steel with the 320 and the aluminium with 400(or vice versa)? Does this matter much or is the grit range just an approximation?

    • @livingonadollar2882
      @livingonadollar2882 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      might be alittle late on the reply but you should start with a 40-80 grit to remove the rust down to metal then clean the area at the edge of the metal were it meets the paint "feather edge" the paint so what you are doing is trying not to have a sharp edge add bondo over the old rusted area to fill in pin holes dents etc .. smooth that out with a few passes with 80 then 120 then quick pass or two with 240 ... use primer over the bondo area and any bare metal and over your old paint line filling in any sanding marks let it dry sand the area with 320 or 400 .. i make A/C Cobras and we sand the whole primed car with 600 wet for really flat paint mind you we also spray a paint glue promoter

    hi I have a 68 mustang I'm trying to sand down to the bare metal it's rust with old beat up burned paint if I use 80 grit to sand to the bare metal the scratches I leave behind on the metal will they show after painting??

    • @zahernasserjah
      @zahernasserjah 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, because you need to steadily increase grit. 80 is way way way to low for painting.

    • @josebaca97
      @josebaca97 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is it better to switch over to the 400 right before hitting the metal?

    • @bowtiechevy
      @bowtiechevy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey jose, yes hit the car with the 60-80 grit to remove the clear cloat/paint and heavy rust, then move up to 120-150 and go over it again, then again with 320-400 before prime or paint.

    I can't seem to find the answer to my question anywhere online so hopefully someone can chime in. Can I use multi-purpose (not automotive) sandpaper to strip paint to the clearcoat on my car? I want to use a ROS electric sander with 60 or 80 grit REGULAR sandpaper, and then hand sand it with actual automotive sandpaper until it's smooth enough for filler primer and primer. Thanks

    I have never used 240 and I work at Maaco auto body. We have 180 and 220, 320 400 and all the wet sand like you do.

    I have an 83 Camaro and I am about to do a quick restoration on for a flip. The body is dead straight and has very few rust spots. I'm not interested in striping the car. Can I just sand the paint thats on the car till it's flat and do the minor body work, then spray a coat of high build primer and block sand for my finish coat of paint ?

    I see some people will wet sand a bumper with 400 grit, but then they will go over that 400 grit with like an 800 grit, then a 1000 grit and so on. When i wet sand my plastic bumper with 400 grit before painting, do i have to go finer and finer grit after that, or do i just use the 400 paint and call it a day?

    I'm wondering if you can help me out here. No matter what grit I use, 320-400-600 before sanding and feathering it out, I still get scratch marks on my paint. I even spot putty areas that I feel will cause a problem along with sanding it, and it always shows. I used a cheap carquest rattle can custom paint with clear coat. 2-4coats of sandable primer. Is there something i'm doing wrong?

    • @TurboVisBits
      @TurboVisBits 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sand it more with multiple directions. You shouldn't see any scratches at all in the primer before you paint.

    • @AwesomenessIskey
      @AwesomenessIskey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about using filler primer? For some reason on the red I used, even though it was a exact match, doesnt match the original.

    So firstly im 18 years old.....and I collect portable consoles....such as nintendo, sony and even as far back as the early gameboys..........now....Some of my portable consoles have scratches on the buttons which really ruins the collection for me....its either mint condition or get out.....would 1000 grit sandpaper and up be recommended for that kind of plastic? Like all the psp's I have, have glossy buttons with scratches....which grit for that....or my gameboys and nintendos have like a matte finish.......what grit for that? Any recommendations would be helpful thanks.
