It’s the same as when they banned handguns here in the UK, it only affected the law abiding owners of legally held guns. I can understand why this means so much to you. Good luck.
Sort of, the government creates positions and departments. They, in turn, must be seen to be doing their jobs come hell or high water or they'll close that department and jobs. Regardless of the decisions or impact on the peoples, they did their job and won't be fired. Even if the department is a bit unnecessary - they will do their job...to the 'nth degree.

Suppressors in New Zealand are for hearing protection and it's more common to see a hunting rifle with a suppressor than not. It by no means makes them silent at all, but it takes the top ~30 decibels out of the shot, which make a big difference in reducing hearing damage. It makes the shot just a little louder than hammering a nail. In combination with ear protection it means you basically don't have risk of hearing damage, and isn't a public safety issue.

You can get AR’s but it so difficult to navigate the bureaucratic nightmare that is weapons licensing. I have had conversations with people about firearms and hunting and there is a real lack of understanding of the real risk to people of legally owned firearms (miniscule). To a lot of people not familiar with firearms it's the bogey man under the bed, its like people are scared of snakes or spiders or flying. There is only the feeling of fear and no logic. For a government that is making a mess of things, it is an easy mark. Australians typically are not interested in politics or the political process, shooters especially and it's been to our detriment. The other thing we have to contend with is the growing aversion to people going out and hunting animals for food or to control ferals. Thousands of animals get killed on roads, developers fill in wetlands or remove native flora that supports the fauna, foxes and cats kill native animals all the time and often its a miserable death, but the general public don't bat an eye. Have a human go out and try to quickly dispatch an animal for food or to cull a feral pest and it's an obscene act, they wouldn't do it so no one should be able to do it. Fishing is in their sights as well, its a natural progression of the disneyfication of animals and the average persons distance from nature and the actual food chain.
Exactly the same over here in the UK, the UK government is now talking about putting UK firearms certificates up in price to £400 each time you renew your licence

For anyone who says what about NZ - they did it , the latest police statement said they had a 43 percent increase in gun crime, (just waiting for that public safety to kick in.) in other news they said in the last six years nearly all the guns recovered by police in the course of their work had serial numbers removed or had been illegally imported or illegally manufactured making the new firearms register a big expensive white elephant, the money and resources they are pouring into the new gun register could actually improve public safety if they targeted organisations involved in gun crimes like criminal gangs
