Loretta Young was so beautiful and such a great actress she was a pleasure to watch in movies. Barry Sullivan was an actor who could make you hate him and that's what he did in this movie. I just watched this for the first time and Loretta Young's performance is unbelievable! I can't imagine how she was able to get wound up so tight like she had a few triple espressos followed by a Benzedrine chaser. Alfred Hitchcock couldn't have done it much better. I was a big fan of Loretta Young as a child. I think this is the finest performance I've ever seen with her. Thanks for posting this great movie.
I did see this movie so long ago I forgot. But, I started to remember what was going to happen next. I remember the letter for non-postage, of course at the end This is truly a wonderful movie with all the famous actors. Thks, for bringing it ❤❤💜💜. I think I will see another 8 times.

As much as I am a classic movie fan. I don’t know how I pass this one up growing up. It was early Friday morning that this movie caught my eye at the end. I teared up like a crying baby. I haven’t done that since I was 12 years old. I’m 58 now. This was the best movie I’ve seen in a long time and the way Loretta Young handled the role in that movie and she made me cry. I’m crying right now. she definitely should’ve won an Oscar.
I was honestly expecting, in the final scene, that the attending physician and "best friend" would be revealed to have actually been slowly poisoning George.

I picked up a a false clue when he asked "Is he dead?" instead of what might have been a more normal "He isn't dead, is he?" or "What's the matter!? What's happened!?" The actual ending left me pondering another question: Is it legal to see your husband die and then spend the rest of the day scurrying to and fro without ever notifying the authorities? I was also undecided as to whether Barry Sullivan was severely paranoid and genuinely believed his life was in danger, or whether he was a cold-hearted, mean-spirited villain who just wanted to hurt people.
What a good movie. I was on the edge of my seat first time I saw it years ago and I still enjoy the repeats. Loretta Young really knew how to pick movies that were perfect for her.
I thought George was a heel for so obviously hitting on his friend's girl from the instant they met. He made no attempt to be subtle about it and then became highly suspicious of them when he became ill and he thought the same thing was happening to him but in a much more sinister way. He, obviously, had a very mean "green streak", unlike his doctor friend, and couldn't handle the thought of losing Ellen back to him while he was sick. Knowing he was probably dying he schemes to ruin their lives after his death by writing a letter to the D.A. and blaming them for his death. A truly classic film noir study on the psyche of human existence. Thank you for posting another great film!
What I love about these movies that are of this time period is the feeling they give me of my childhood and how things used to be in life. I love the set decoration and the clothes and the way people treated one and other. A gentler time for day to day living ... the Blessed early 50’s!!! I enjoyed this movie so much, fine actors and I always love it when it’s filmed in California, especially LA!! Thank you!
I've thought the same thing many times. Recently, though, after viewing numerous gangster documentaries (Capone, etc), I realize we were protected from that reality back then. It existed, but we didn't know. Generally, though, you're right. People were far more civilized and polite. Down south, it was refreshing to move from the north and witness good manners many times. But don't take "bless your heart" too seriously.
Yes, Tanya, what a thriller, I was nervous for the wife. She was always running to do things for her husband, who was a nut case, but I'm glad she got out of the whole thing. I kept saying, "But you got a dead body upstairs!" Great movie, loved it.❤❤
Movies of this era were not made for shock value. They were made to make you feel better when you left the theatre than when you came in. There were often life lessons infused for good measure. These taught you to appreciate what you had or made you want to strive for better. Making the viewer laugh with the characters in the film and lighten the burden of everyday living. Sadly movies made today attempt to shock sadden or revolt the viewer. If Hollywood never made another movie I for one would be quite happy watching all the old ones forever more. Cheers for upload :)
Tarn Sand Exactly. It is supposed to refresh us. I have the TCM on the TV and now we have films here on Utube with no commercials. Remember when we had just the tube TV? If it got dark, we called the guy, and he replaced a tube for $24.00 Now we have to pay for the monthly TV, phone, and PC all together for over $100 pr. mo. I have only my SS to live on. I have been a widow for years. This economy scares me. Waiting for the big fall.

Yes, I enjoy housework. There's satisfaction in a job well done. Also you're you own boss; you can do things in your own time, in your own manner and you're in the security of your own home. There's no 2hr commute, and you can stop for a cup of tea whenever you feel like it. Though it's certainly harder when there's children, but they go off to school and very few thing more rewarding than kids. It certainly beats working for the man. You shouldn't feel embarrassed about enjoying it, no-one has a right to say you settled for something less than best; isn't love, and protecting and caring for those you love best?
I’m not going to bash you because I feel the same way. I still have my husband but we’re not close and my children are grown and scattered. I don’t do much homework anymore because I just don’t care.
I so agree Karel. Todays movies have to depend desperately on specialized computer graphics, endless special effects and plagiarizing and still cant captivate or hold a candle to a good story like the film noirs

I’m 42 and would watch these olden movies with my Nana when I was little. I watch them now with my son. The acting today can’t match the acting back then. Seriously was a nail biter ❤😂
I have loved Loretta Young since I was a small child, in the 60s. I think it had a lot to do with her and my mom, having similar smiles, with high cheekbones. But she was about the best dramatic actresses of her era. Even this movie had that drama where I was really feeling her, trying to get that letter back. Her and Spring Brighton were the sweetheart faces, I saw most on the screen, in the 60s. I wondered why I love old movies so, and figured maybe I was seeing things from my mom's era, is why. But there's no denying the acting was on point. Seems like the less money they made, the greater the acting. Most actors back then wasn't just trying to fatten their pockets, they were trying to pay rent. So they gave their ALL. And I know good acting when I see it.

Enjoyed this film. Loretta Young was great as always, amazing job as I could feel the intensity and her fear with her. The story George tells Ellen ab the bottle ship and then @35:18 - "... Graham may have you alright, but he'll be disappointed with what he gets." I felt so terrible for Ellen and loathed George for being so cruel. What a great movie. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. I married a George, and I could totally relate to her fear and anxiety. My husband died to, and he like to point his guns. My God, that is more common behavior than what I thought. Anyway she is an amazing actress. Did she receive an academy for this movie, because she should have.

She was totally believable and so pretty, of course She was an Actress of the Silver Screen, totally classy and beautiful. This is a part that I have never seen Barry Sullivan play, and he was great as a Man filled with physiological pathology. He was truly dangerous from the start, but nobody picked up on it.

I saw this movie as a kid, not seen it in ages. Loretta lived a few blocks from me. I saw her on occasion, she was more beautiful in real life. Such a sweet lady.
My whole life I live on the edge. But not like her. Just a bunch of city officials want me dead. They don't want to be exposed. I got my own army now. they spend taxpayers money on cases that were long over with and trial them anyway.
The film made a point very germane to the spiritual war we're embroiled in. Sullivan is not just a heel morphing into a nutcase, but portrays a true psychotic - a narcissist with a bent for malevolence to the point of self-destruction. He relates a childhood story in which he beat up aa playmate who tried to make off with his prize toy. When forced by his mom to surrender the toy in reparation, he smashes it. This is not just a study on the psyche of human existence, but more a reveal on the Luciferian mindset. Right now the Cabal knows its time is up, yet continues to wage an end-times assault against humanity in just the same psychotic immolation, knowing they can't overcome God but determined to smash His creation as they go down. While they can't win, they want to insure NOBODY can win. And that is the definition of Pure Evil. Charlie Ward often points out there is Good and there is Bad. The Bad can sometimes gain the gift of salvation through repentance, and that is the heart of the Gospel. But at the far end of the spectrum is Evil, the defining aspect of Satan the Accuser, which is a state of mind that can never be redeemed. When one consents to Evil, it manifests as the unpardonable sin; he becomes dead to his humanity and all hope of grace from God.

Loretta Young (1913 - 2000) was a very popular American star having a long and varied movie career from 1917 - 1953, winning the Best Actress Oscar in The Farmer's Daughter in 1947 and scoring her second Oscar nomination for Come to the Stable in 1949. She moved early into the fledgling TV industry with her series The Loretta Young Show (1953 - 1961) which won three Emmys. In 1986, she won a Golden Globe for her role in Christmas Eve. She appeared first in the silent film Sweet Kitty Bellairs in 1916 aged only three in uncredited role and appeared first under her birth name of Gretchen Young in Sirens of the Sea in 1917. She was first billed as Loretta Young in 1928 in The Whip Woman.
Thank you for a wonderful review of Loretta Young' most interesting career. I loved her I "The Stranger " with Orson Welles and Edward G. Robinson. Her television show was on point! Her wardrobe for the show was a show in itself.

Yes, I enjoy housework. There's satisfaction in a job well done. Also you're you own boss; you can do things in your own time, in your own manner and you're in the security of your own home. There's no 2hr commute, and you can stop for a cup of tea whenever you feel like it. Though it's certainly harder when there's children, but they go off to school and very few thing more rewarding than kids. It certainly beats working for the man.
You shouldn't feel embarrassed about enjoying it, no-one has a right to say you settled for something less than best; isn't love, and protecting and caring for those you love best?
I’m not going to bash you because I feel the same way. I still have my husband but we’re not close and my children are grown and scattered. I don’t do much homework anymore because I just don’t care.

I’m 42 and would watch these olden movies with my Nana when I was little. I watch them now with my son. The acting today can’t match the acting back then. Seriously was a nail biter ❤😂
I have loved Loretta Young since I was a small child, in the 60s. I think it had a lot to do with her and my mom, having similar smiles, with high cheekbones. But she was about the best dramatic actresses of her era. Even this movie had that drama where I was really feeling her, trying to get that letter back. Her and Spring Brighton were the sweetheart faces, I saw most on the screen, in the 60s. I wondered why I love old movies so, and figured maybe I was seeing things from my mom's era, is why. But there's no denying the acting was on point. Seems like the less money they made, the greater the acting. Most actors back then wasn't just trying to fatten their pockets, they were trying to pay rent. So they gave their ALL. And I know good acting when I see it.

Enjoyed this film. Loretta Young was great as always, amazing job as I could feel the intensity and her fear with her. The story George tells Ellen ab the bottle ship and then @35:18 - "... Graham may have you alright, but he'll be disappointed with what he gets." I felt so terrible for Ellen and loathed George for being so cruel. Excellent portrayal of an all around ass**** by Barry Sullivan. Thanks for the upload!

What a great movie. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. I married a George, and I could totally relate to her fear and anxiety. My husband died to, and he like to point his guns. My God, that is more common behavior than what I thought. Anyway she is an amazing actress. Did she receive an academy for this movie, because she should have.

+AMIRKHAN NOIR You are so right!... Film Noir films of those eras are unbeatable. I have watched "Cause for Alarm" more than once, and it is always good. Loretta Young did a great job in this film. She was totally believable and so pretty, of course She was an Actress of the Silver Screen, totally classy and beautiful. This is a part that I have never seen Barry Sullivan play, and he was great as a Man filled with physiological pathology.
He was truly dangerous from the start, but nobody picked up on it.

I saw this movie as a kid, not seen it in ages. Loretta lived a few blocks from me. I saw her on occasion, she was more beautiful in real life. Such a sweet lady.

The film made a point very germane to the spiritual war we're embroiled in. Sullivan is not just a heel morphing into a nutcase, but portrays a true psychotic - a narcissist with a bent for malevolence to the point of self-destruction. He relates a childhood story in which he beat up aa playmate who tried to make off with his prize toy. When forced by his mom to surrender the toy in reparation, he smashes it. This is not just a study on the psyche of human existence, but more a reveal on the Luciferian mindset. Right now the Cabal knows its time is up, yet continues to wage an end-times assault against humanity in just the same psychotic immolation, knowing they can't overcome God but determined to smash His creation as they go down. While they can't win, they want to insure NOBODY can win. And that is the definition of Pure Evil.
Charlie Ward often points out there is Good and there is Bad. The Bad can sometimes gain the gift of salvation through repentance, and that is the heart of the Gospel. But at the far end of the spectrum is Evil, the defining aspect of Satan the Accuser, which is a state of mind that can never be redeemed. When one consents to Evil, it manifests as the unpardonable sin; he becomes dead to his humanity and all hope of grace from God.
