Same here. I do hope that he is doing ok. He is going through a lot right now. Hopefully he will be back soon. We all miss you good buddy. Please come back soon.
If you ever burn up a selenium rectifier, they smell like rotten eggs. So, don't fart when conducting your test! You won't be able to tell if a rectifier is failing or you just sharted.
Fun fact, molecules with H-S bonds smell like farts or rotten eggs usually. Stuff with H-Se bonds smell the same but 100x stronger. Your threshold for it is already in the parts per trillion but it's 100x that now. And tellurium with H-Te bonds are even worse. At that point you are sensing a handful of molecules as a rotten egg smell. When universities do anything with the latter 2 groups of compounds they usually send out emails to warn people of the smell on the entire campus because if they don't, dozens will report gas leaks
I got here, researching the huge selenium rectifier in a vintage 60 AMP battery charger I am trying to fix. Then I am reminded of the old carbon arc lamps we used to burn printing plates, at the print shop many years ago. Great memories, Thank You!
Reminds of this one time when I was much younger with the biggest love of my life, we stumbled on this old worn out electrical box that was made by Rube Goldberg himself. It had like 25 knobs and 30 switches and it was like a cattle gate or something stupid like that (cracking up typing this btw).. I was a cattle gate or something and I started messing with the contraption and made robot sounds and stuff and she loved it. Up with 10 movements of 12 different knobs in coordination with pushing timed switches relayed to limit switches.. Somehow I didn't short it out or release any cows. It was awesome. This thing reminds me of how strange history is.
Just thought I would leave a comment to thank you for the years of entertainment and knowledge you have given me! I have been with you since late 2009 and have loved every moment, I still have the 2 t-shirts you sent and treasure them dearly, carry on the good work, and once again, thank you!
These are, by a country mile, the most entertaining videos I've watched on TH-cam (that's saying something cos I've watched me own!) Welding with a cordless drill pack? CRAZY! You're a top geezer, keep it up ;-)
An other great video. Love that power supply with the Selenium rectifiers. great score. Great fire works as usual. Thanks for being active making video's again and the timing was perfect when the misses was out shopping. LOL !
@6:20 you can just imagine the neibours or somebody walking along the rood and they see a silhouett of a figure with a visor held up to his head..,person walking past thinks..what the chuck in going on in Frankenstein house. Your soh is good and keep up the work in aid of Science.
Great times, glad he's back and doing well. Wish I had the knowledge I have now back when this was all I'd do with electronics, on a much much small scale
I laugh and learn all the time watching your video's, and I've seen then all. This is one of my favourites though, as are may others. Keep 'em coming Chap.
Ahh! The lovely T & Rs'. They were great, - though I did have one expire on me near the end of reel 5 of Get Carter (a nice 35mm print) with Mike Hodges (Director) in the audience. I had a Westalite (Westinghouse Brake & Signal) as backup. It happened so near the end of the reel that I had to make an early changeover. When selenium rectifiers fail, there's a distinct acrid smell. Many would attest that mercury arcs were more reliable. I was burning Marble Double Eagle 7mm neg/ 8mm pos carbons at 70 amps.
it's like christmas everytime there is a new vid photon! i would of never thought you could arc weld with a cordless battery! nice new rug upstairs btw!
Just as long as ur safe and know what ur doing its quite easy to play with electricity and be safe The main rule of thumb for avoiding shock is that you dont want 2 different parts of your body at different voltages - follow that and ur good to go!
I find if you put a big inductance in series with the DC supply you get a much bigger arc even with a small current. Love to see 100A through some big momma inductor and across to bits of metal!
A magnet and the carbons end to end are how they are used in a projector. Use DC carbons instead of the AC carbons on that supply. The DC carbons have a much smaller negative carbon.
Trouble is; The missus is gonna be comin through that door i a minute and she might not be too impressed - Classic opening. Then, gotta clean up all my shit up before she comes back - Priceless!
Just bought an old 'StartAll' battery charger/starter and it has a rectifier in it like that. Only one though :( puts out 130A 6/12/24V. Looks like it could be on antiques roadshow, but I like it. It was very dusty and when it fired it up on 24v got a few sparks on the rectifier and it smelt like someone had farted?
You are funny, you sound and look a very much how I imagine someone (a villain) from a Dickens novel would! You have a natural sneaky naughtness. Keep up the electric mischief!
That little rectifier is really a diode bridge with four diodes in it, for full wave rectification. That's why they use four of them big selenium diodes I bet, in a Greatz bridge configuration just like in the little one. But those old suckers has a much higher voltage drop, so they need way more cooling if you dont want them to pop. And when they do pop, they're supposed to smell like the most rotten fart you've ever felt. But I can't recall if the smoke is poisonous or not, but it might be.
I miss photon

@@wildliferescue8784 yea same here i still hope, one day, find an 1 day ago or 4 hours ago video of him (or newer video)
@@gabrielvieira6529 he is back. There will be new videos coming very soon.
@@wildliferescue8784 We can only hope.
@Electro Mega he deleted it to, got a link for reupload?
pause at 5:10 and change to slow motion and you can see one of the wires in the back of the tap change board glowing red hot.
JR9979 your right!
If you ever burn up a selenium rectifier, they smell like rotten eggs. So, don't fart when conducting your test! You won't be able to tell if a rectifier is failing or you just sharted.
@Irish Viking how did you manage that?
@@TS-jm7jm Well it's a natural thing, gasses build up and eventually you release them in a fart.
Actualy selenoorganics smell WAY WORSE than their sulfur containing analogues.

Never get tired of this legendary stuff.
How does a diode actually work?
Lol that's been a long time.

if this channel did not exist, youtube would be worthless. this is the best channel ever!! damn better than any TV show that exists!!
well you see....
Truth be told.
*Shrugs with an innocent look* "I dunno why we've got a faasund paand leccy bill, missus!"

i like transformer noises
Now all he needs is a creepy castle and a butler called Igor, the prefect mad scientist, lol.
Great vid as always
Viktor Hofer frankinstien
You threw a battery at a traffic warden lol.. what a legend :)
Far more effective than my call him names and do a burnout while driving off approach haha
I would totally do that too but in America you get shot for shit like that so maybe not
Beautiful equipment there. Real stuff! Made to last and man would I love to have those. So so sweet!
Amazing find man!, love the old skool ammeter and Se Rectifiers!
You should have a Richard Hammond style show on TV with your humour - great stuff (:

Watching this video I have literal flashbacks and can still smell/taste burning selenium rectifiers.
How the F**k did you burn them?!!?
@@drakethedragon457 Fire.
the real question is how many burns dose it take to destroy the carpet
He popped it XD
joe muncey I swear he's going to set it on fire some day. I'm sure he'll have it in one of his videos ^_^
2017.. still nope
Starving kids in Africa would eat that carpet xD
Till it pops
I could see you having a heart attack over the rectifier and falling on the wires like a defibrillator and coming back to life.
Are you a Phoenican like me? :'3
You have the AZ Cardinals!
Technically that would work if he fell in the correct place, it's pretty much what defibs do anyway

He is a true lover of his science, a true expert. Been following since the beginning. Love it.
The song that comes in at 7:50 should be your new theme music. Much more power to it.
Thanks for coming back! I just stumbled upon your new channel.

I think Igor used that model in the Frankenstein movie.
Frankenstein is from London
Years later I still feel bad for him that his marriage didn’t work.
miss your content man hope your life has worked out for better now
yeh, Andy is a great knowledgeable man!, even gave me some inspiration to do fun things with washing machines at one stage ;)
You sir are a gold plated luny
WOAH! these are the biggest selenium rectifiers i have ever seen! Very cool!
Love your taste in music, too photon. Great stuff.
Love the noises of that transformer under load. Could listen to that all day long.

So happy to see you still uploading man! awesome.
Stop playing with the electricity I can't skype to my relatives in UK because of you! Mad man!

Come back home Andy, all is forgiven. You are sorely missed.
Dude, totally loving that new title screen.
Your editing has come on a looonngg way!!
It's been far too long, thanks for the video.
It'll take that all day long, It wont even complain
I spent an afternoon melting glass and the concrete floor with a DC arc from a bunch of solar cells last year. Got my first arc eyes that day
I hope photon, where ever you are. Your aim has improved.

You've just invented a very portable emergency welder, im gunna make me one of them . Good on ya mate, good to see ya back.

That's definitely a reflection in the camera optics. You'll notice it moves when he moves the electrode.
Aren't arks normally made out of wood?
Oh, i like that noise.
Cool, me too. I like doing multicam recording and cutting. Giving it a little bit of a "professional" discovery channel look in the final cut^^
Got to love that angry hum.
