@@Mookie12911 it may be hard to believe but there is many parts in the world, even in the US, that has terrible Internet plans. Luckily I don't anymore but still common in this world
I think the real solution here would be just include the minimal texture settings by default, and have optional downloads for high-res textures. You could even split the packs up so its just textures for MP, or just Zombies, etc if you only care about certain modes. Requiring streaming is awful regardless of how minimal the effects are for most players. Especially when it forces modes like Campaign and Solo Zombies to have a forced internet connection.
@@sohan6058 same thing. Include the minimal quality textures, and have optional high res texture packs for the CoD app. I assume most of the shared assets are for Warzone anyways, so just make a Warzone high-res texture pack too.
as an Australian player, this is extremely disconcerting. the average speed here is 50mbps. Yes , you heard that correctly, and they charge $75 AUD for it monthly (one of Australia's biggest scams ever pulled off). I am very worried that texture streaming on such low bandwidth speeds in Australia/Oceania specifically will lead to lots of ping spikes, affecting their so-called "delta ping" (🙄), leading to even MORE lag-comp/de-sync which is already really bad in Australia due to our massive ping discrepancies and having to cram Oceania into one huge region.
I don't get why they don't just give us a high-res texture pack in the store to download? Then just add to it every update? If you're literally streaming the same textures over and over again, then a consolidated download seems like a better solution. I used to wonder why in MWII I had such bad packet burst, then I realized texture streaming was on. Once I turned it off I was fine. I'm definitely disappointed in their choice on our lack of choice.
Having a minimum texture cache of 16GB is comedy.. "saving all this storage space", but "let me use this much of your drive to temp store the textures we won't let you keep!" 🤦
The biggest part is not running around the map. What I think it will effect the most is when people are throwing flame or thermite and there is a lot that is where the texture streaming could be a problem.
-43 Gigs an hour is not insignificant. If you have a 1 TB cap, you will hit your monthly cap before the end of the month just playing 1 hour a day. So if its set to optimized by default, this could be an issue for some people.- I was a little off, 43 gigabits per hour is like 5.4 gigabytes per hour. And the 1 TB cap is usually listed as terabytes, so you would need to play for like 186 hours to reach that cap. Or like 60 hours if you have a 300 GB cap. Not impossible, but way more time required then I had originally calculated. Thanks to the people who replied who pointed out my mistake.
@@lesvegetables4973 from Ace's testing, it sounds like the "minimal" option will still meet the needs of situations like yours, you just need to pay attention to what that setting is set to and maybe add some alerts through your ISP for reaching certain data thresholds just to make sure you dont exceed your data limits.
I think it's closer to 0.45 gigs an hour. Remember, 12 megabits is only 1.5 megabytes! 1 hour a day for a month would use up 13-14 GB. Not defending this though, still annoying that it can't be turned off.
I think this is a result of the constant complaints of the game install size being "too big" but I think the bigger issue at hand is 1TB or even less still being the standard for consoles is just woefully inadequate for modern games.
I really hate the forced online that Activision has been doing especially for someone who didn't have internet way back then cause my parents couldn't afford it. I’d absolutely love the option to download texture packs. I live out in the countryside in the UK and currently, my max download speed is 28-30mbps. Nothing I can do about it whatsoever, it’s just an unfortunate drawback of living where I do. Forcing us to permanently download something at all times is, just like you said about the Campaign, absolutely ridiculous. We should have choices and your suggestions would solve all problems.
I'm using minimal and it's still lagging.... it's absolute garbage honestly.... Get it out. Let me turn it off entirely and just let me download whole textures ffs
I absolutely despise texture streaming, a constant up/down connection plus your little agreement of the TOS can allow whoevers on the otherside of that connection to do as they please, but thats a different topic so as for other technical reasons that Ace didnt mention or doesnt know about are Efficient Memory Management, ST can help keep memory down not just physical storage, Scalability across Hardware, ST can make it easier to build a "base" game then allow each different hardware to render to its best performance, a few others are Future-Proofing allows the ability for constant updates and Optimizing Load Times, ST can load the ” base" game the dl the textures allowing to get into match faster... Now most of these dont apply/work with COD lol but there it is

@@StolenJoker84 they used to have this option but since most the playerbase is still on last gen and with every game being condensed under one launcher it inflates the install size beyond 150gb and they can't compress the assets even though the assets they use look bad even on max settings and don't scale well even on higher end systems. They use high resolution textures but that doesn't mean shit when the base textures just look bad. Who is modern COD even catered to? “Without taking up a ton of storage space” says the game that just randomly decided to start installing an 80gb update with a total game size of 180gb… if that’s how much space it needs without high res textures….
I think one scenario you have not covered is if you have enough bandwidth (just) but two users request a packet at the same time across two clients in the same house i.e. not a bandwidth issue but a packet priority issue, I think this will create increased lag/ping
Ace, it would be really helpful to put out a video with tips on how to reduce input lag reduction on a PS5, Network, settings, controller set up etc etc. There isn't much out there that is super reliable. Great content as always. Keep it up!
Series X, hardwired, 55/20mb broadband (UK). No change to my setup before / after the update. The game is noticably worse post update, permenent packet burst icon, tangiable issues with hit detection. And file size is NOT the issue, HD textures havent been installed on the HD since WZ1 / Cold War. Switching between minimal and optamised makes no difference to the game performance.
Seeing that you have a series X this is ridiculous, those on series x or ps5 should not need texture streaming period, seeing how powerful we were told these consoles are. those on series s, ps4/pro, xbox one/one x well that could be a different story.
How hard is it for Activision and other game devs to understand this simple rule: give the player the choice. Keep texture streaming in the game for those who benefit from it. I have a 1 Gbps symmetrical connection and get crazy packet bursts with it enabled. I'd much rather have the choice of disabling streaming entirely and choosing between a low/high quality texture pack and having it be a set and forget option. It's also ridiculous that the single player mode can't be played offline due to them forcing texture streaming to be always on. How out of touch can they get?
How am I feeling about this? I hate it. I wanna be able to play Campaign and Zombies locally if I so choose. Sometimes when my wifi goes out or something, I go to play a game's campaign for the time being. With a system like this, I will literally be unable to play Black Ops 6's Campaign if my internet happens to go out, which is not even a rare occurrence for me tbh, it usually happens like once a year lol so if i did wanna play Bo6 when it does happen, I just can't. That is stupid.
"I wanna be able to play campaign and zombies locally if I so choose" Be wary of buying black ops 6, the Devs said you can't play any of it without having an internet connection.
Great, great video Ace. Coming with straight facts from real time testing. Love it. The lag I get in COD is server based issues, I am almost positive. I lag out for a few seconds every 4 or 5 matches on multiplayer and its even more common on Warzone for some reason. Maybe larger server size has something to do with it. The file size has been a problem so I get why they are doing this but even on PS5 you can get external hard drives and store as many games as you want. So is it really a must have? I dunno.
As a player with a really good internet connection + ethernet, it doesnt bother me at all. But my friends and other players have been complaining about this aswell so its clearly and issue. But imo, even *if* they added the option to download high res textures, people are still going to complain that "the texture pack is too big!" And such and will request the abilty to only download some of them. Theres no pleasing everyone unfortunately. Although one intreting thing i found after playing the bo6 leaked beta, is that for some reason Devs have the ability to turn off texture streaming entirely. Since it gave us the minamal, optimized, and a third option "None" with a pink Dev flare on it.
On PC (Warzone only)- Tried swapping between Minimal and Optimized every other game for 10 games on Warzone(Big Map). The "Minimal" setting caused stuttering and dropped frames consistently as I ran through the map. This happened to our whole squad. The "Optimized" setting played more normal, no more stuttering or dropped frames while running around the map. I think the options for player choice should be there. Catering to all players would include the option to turn off texture streaming. As someone who plays on PC, most PC players have more than enough HD space to handle the larger file size.
I severely despite this change. I don't want to increase my data usage monthly just to play this game. Just allow us to pre-download textures and graphics qualities of our choice, just like how we are able to choose to download or delete the multiplayer/campaign content of the game.
I just do not get why they would force it. Just give players the choice: if they want smaller file size, use texture streaming. If you are okay with larger file sizes, allow players to download the high res textures. Like most decisions like this are financially driven, but I do not see a financial gain for Activision to do this.

But it's _FAKE_ "size savings".. 😶 The texture cache is minimum 16GB, and it starts out higher than that on default, I think. So you need that much free space for it to fill it up with cache 🤦
Great topic to have touched on. I didn't even realize they messed with this. of course though, leave it to these Dev's to play with something that simply doesn't need to be played with..
Even for me with a good connection, no data caps and exelent bandwidth I still don't like texture streaming. The way the cod does it is that they separate a space on your ssd to be constantly overwritten that in long term can cause ssd degradation and even failure of that drive. And considering that the ps5 ssd is just memory chips soldered to the board I wouldn't advise anyone to play cod unless they install it on a added on m.2 drive
Ace thanks so much for doing this! I'm one of the poor bastards with a crap internet connection with max of 12 gb per second and I can barely get by. I really don't like them forcing this on us. I'm glad to see your testing show at least minimal setting helps.
At some point we won't even be able to play in native resolution and with local files anymore on AAA titles. They'll make the trailers look so good with a 4000$ GPU and 900 Go of textures and then regular players will have forced upscaling, forced texture streaming, force cloud computing, no offline.... Man that sucks. These techs were supposed to give breathing room, extra margin for performance like with modest configurations with limited space, limited processing power etc etc. But no. This margin will be eaten and used to push the limit without caring for optimization. Your game runs at 45 fps at 1080p with a 4070 ? Well go upscale mf. You have a 2To SSD for gaming ? We'll use your internet no thank you mf And also, what happens when the servers go offline in 10 years ? Gone ? Unplayable ? Do we need to WORSEN the problem of long term game preservation and archival ? Activision can't even bother patch their old CoD to prevent remote code execution hacking while still selling them 60 freaking bucks. These things should remain options. Usefull tools at your disposal to better your experience. Taking away player choice and agency is plain bad, just incomprehensibly bad. The whole AAA industry will take this and run with it. We couldn't prevent upscaling from being a more and more prevalent mandatory feature and this crap will set another trend we probably won't be able to fight. Depressing Oh and also, cool for the environnement having servers constatly uploading the same billions of textures again and again 24/7 instead of computers reading local files. Jesus christ the more I think about this the more pissed off I'm getting lol. Great video btw, first time watching you earned a subscribe.
Legit makes by sense. I could barely see the difference when Ace showed the high resolution textures. I feel it’s just an excuse for always online DRM.
This isn’t just a game issue It’s an issue with greedy internet providers and substandard infrastructure. Fast internet is possible for everyone but governments and companies hold back so much unless you pay up. Countries like South Korea set a good example on fast internet speeds. America being “large” is a good argument but they have the capacity to do it but lack of investment in rural areas and low income areas keeps people stuck in a loop. But I agree, the choice should be there that would be the best option
Yeah my eyesight is not good enough to be worth ANY risk of lag to stream textures. Also that pop-in you mention is a big factor I never would've thought of. Thanks for doing this research!
The game seems 100% like its more laggy with the texture streaming, i just want to be able to use the ssd space that i paid for so i dont have to do the streaming garbage
Mostly I’m worried about the future. Basically nothing can be played offline, so unlike BO3 if I go back to zombies 10 years from now I might not even be able to play it because of hackers or no internet
You are an absolute melon if you are downloading high res anything for an FPS game it will only make your game run much worse for a marginally better picture.
The only internet connection available in my area is my phones hotspot, so this has effectively killed my ability to play call of duty. F*** you activision, F*** you xbox.
I think its not That hard to implement a feature to ask the users if we want or not to install the Higher quality textures, its just downloading ONCE instead of downloading it Everytime in game, yes it has only to do with storage space and I think the streaming option is a good idea generally but yeah like I said earlier putting an option for the players that has an extra storage for it should also be a feature tho..
Very nice to see someone get some real data on this. I'm super excited for BO6 but all this mandatory texture streaming madness is baffling, it feels like such a ridiculous approach to deal with huge file sizes. Not a fan of how CoD is doubling down on it, but at least the data usage isn't too insane...
Ever since this update has happened at the Season Reloaded, I've noticed a TON more Packet Burst. This may very well be why, but I'm not sure. I have super stable connection otherwise 1gig down/40 up and the past few days especially have been borderline unplayable and I've played all the seasons mostly until battlepass completion. I have an extremely high end PC (7950x3d/7900xtx/32gb DDR5 6000) certainly capable of running this game at high settings and the constant packet burst stuttery mess is a joke for the amount of money COD makes. I'd much rather have large file sizes than be forced to use something like texture streaming even if it's not supposedly a huge performance/bandwidth hog.
I think a choice is always best! However, I do like the option of deleting files or 'modes' when I've finished and if doesn't make a difference in how it 'feels' to play, I'm not that bothered, but I hope pop-in isn't prominent in Multi-player - especially hardcore modes! I'm always connected when I play so I'm not bothered. If my Internet is 'down', it's because I have no electricity so can't game anyway! Call of Duty is mostly an online game these days so requiring an online connection for single player too isn't an issue to me...
What I’d also like to see is the recent censorship for German players in MW3. It can be forced by logging in with a German IP address. Basically, the censorship contains lack of dismemberment, no cursing and because the gore effects have been toned down, many bundles which feature finishing moves became a waste of money. This affects warzone, multiplayer and zombies and basically removes the option to enable/disable gore from the account settings.
Excellent data and well done synthesis. We need the right to play campaign offline and make our own data decisions. Hopefully they listen to the community and change this before launch.
It’s going to be laggy like BO1 all over again when they had theater mode constantly running in the background. Getting shot around corners was a nightmare.
The problem with how this test is being done is simply placing a limit on a router doesn't make your connection act like a 10mb connection. The issue that happens when a connection is saturated is called Bufferbloat which makes the latency spike. Gigabit fiber is not going to have this issue by imposing a router speed limit on it. Someone really on 10mb or any kind of slow connection is going to get a ping increase as a result of the download causing Bufferbloat.
The test shows that when the game recognizes you’re on a low bandwidth connection, it automatically turns off texture streaming so no buffer bloat would occur at that point
the time to kill vs time to die is insane now. everyone takes so much longer to die and i get insta killed. its like they have bo4 hp and i have mw2019 hp lmao
They're not going to let people turn it off anymore because they want their SBMM algorithm to manipulate someones bandwidth if playing too good in a lobby they're not supposed to be in.
I did notice texture streaming will sometimes cause a DEV error which Essentially locks you out of the game. This I experienced only ONCE, and all I did was disable it and it fixed the issue. I re-activated it and I never had issues again, being forced to use it for the campaign is just stupid beyond recognition. This is essentially the issue that NFS had with 2015 being always online, which the community did not approve of this decision, which is why every new NFS has a separate single-player mode and multiplayer mode. The same applies here, the game should not be online only. That basically makes it pointless to buy a physical copy if you can't even play it because it's always online.
I guess the fact minimal is effictively off makes it ok, why they couldn't have said this? Although we probably wouldn't have believed them, thanks for the info.
I really don't think this is them solving the file size issue. This is just their way of having more control over our games. Cause these games aren't any smaller, really. They are still over 120GBs, for no good reason. I'm no game dev, okay? But with how fast our tech is now, we should be able to make games much smaller, because of how fast our CPUs, GPUs, RAM, and SSDs are. Modern day systems have no trouble uncompressing files on the fly. So games should be getting smaller, not bigger. I find it wild how we used to have games that could fit onto a DVD or Single BluRay disc, and be played off of these disc no issues. On much slower systems, with virtually no RAM. Games were massive in scope, even back then, and had hours upon hours of play time, and only took up about 5 or so GBs of space(or even smaller if you go back further). It's getting pretty out of hand nowadays, and I don't know why. Laziness? Greed? Both? Who really knows. All I know, is it is really dumb. Just... Make games small again. Nothing wild, I just want games to be under 50GBs, at least. If you can make them smaller? Well, more power to ya...
Cod takes up 200g of my 250g Xbox space. It’s a fucking joke when I don’t even use or buy any operator or skin packs yet I’m forced to suffer the negatives of it without the options to turn it all off and save space on my console
the biggest issue is that its a CACHE not a download, soo when you reach 62 (not 64) the game will then overwrite meaning their is no end, just give the user an option to download it all like in MW19 high res texture pack for people that have that space. and trow that bandwdith to improving the connection. FYI the game will use IPV6 connection if you have that enabled for the CDN for the texture.
12 megabits is my bandwidth on average, if not less. No fibre only the old copper telephone lines. Thanks COD, just introduced a feature that changed a game I paid for nearly a year ago that wasn't marketed to function this way.
Apparently this will be the case with bo6. So for now we are testing how it works in mw3.

as an Australian player, this is extremely disconcerting. the average speed here is 50mbps.

People are spamming those even more than usual now
-43 Gigs an hour is not insignificant. If you have a 1 TB cap, you will hit your monthly cap before the end of the month just playing 1 hour a day. So if its set to optimized by default, this could be an issue for some people.-
I was a little off, 43 gigabits per hour is like 5.4 gigabytes per hour. And the 1 TB cap is usually listed as terabytes, so you would need to play for like 186 hours to reach that cap. Or like 60 hours if you have a 300 GB cap. Not impossible, but way more time required then I had originally calculated. Thanks to the people who replied who pointed out my mistake.
i only get 300gb a month no way I'm playing the game then😂
@@lesvegetables4973 from Ace's testing, it sounds like the "minimal" option will still meet the needs of situations like yours, you just need to pay attention to what that setting is set to and maybe add some alerts through your ISP for reaching certain data thresholds just to make sure you dont exceed your data limits.
I think it's closer to 0.45 gigs an hour. Remember, 12 megabits is only 1.5 megabytes! 1 hour a day for a month would use up 13-14 GB.
Not defending this though, still annoying that it can't be turned off.
My math could be off, but wouldn't it be more like 4.5gb per hour at that speed?
@lesvegetables4973 I'm just curious why do people have data caps? I'm in the UK and almost all providers are unlimited Internet usage a month
I think this is a result of the constant complaints of the game install size being "too big" but I think the bigger issue at hand is 1TB or even less still being the standard for consoles is just woefully inadequate for modern games.

What about Starlink?

I agree. We should be able to play any game WITHOUT internet connection. Especially the campaign.
They use high resolution textures but that doesn't mean shit when the base textures just look bad.
Who is modern COD even catered to? It's not catered to people on high end PCs bc performance doesn't scale well and hogs resources unnecessarily, it's not catered to consoles because then they have to either use a better compression algorithm to run more efficient with more limited hardware either And they don't want to do that. I think one scenario you have not covered is if you have enough bandwidth (just) but two users request a packet at the same time across two clients in the same house i.e. not a bandwidth issue but a packet priority issue, I think this will create increased lag/ping
This all started because of Warzone Mobile, and look how that turned out...
Xbox X also lag without any spikes. There is something wrong for some of us. It has to do with providers and some kind of bug
Seeing that you have a series X this is ridiculous, those on series x or ps5 should not need texture streaming period, seeing how powerful we were told these consoles are. those on series s, ps4/pro, xbox one/one x well that could be a different story.

Yeah, I would love the option for the HD texture packs as a single download. My PC has plenty of space to download more RAM and Hard Drive Disk space.
Huge lift for the community bro.

How am I feeling about this? I hate it. I wanna be able to play Campaign and Zombies locally if I so choose.

Even for me with a good connection, no data caps and exelent bandwidth I still don't like texture streaming.
We'll use your internet no thank you mf
And also, what happens when the servers go offline in 10 years ?
Depressing
Oh and also, cool for the environnement having servers constatly uploading the same billions of textures again and again 24/7 instead of computers reading local files. Jesus christ the more I think about this the more pissed off I'm getting lol.

This isn’t just a game issue
It’s an issue with greedy internet providers and substandard infrastructure.

You da man, Ace! Great video! I’ll probably be going with minimal
game thats 200gb in size still needs downloading to play.
Best part is that it isnt 200gb you have forced mw2 files and bo6 files in that 200gb...
Still get packet burst regularly, still a gigantic install size. I ain't giving them any more money. It was a good run.
Turning it to minimal helps me to have better connection.
As an Australian .. this is going to be great.. because our internet is totally amazing and reliable xD
Common sense and Activision don't mix
This is my biggest problem with COD rn. Them trying to force things on us, and not giving us options.. the main reason I'm not buying BO 6

For some reason after this update I started to have packet burst,my internet is good
Give the ppl options, is how I feel. But not able to play a campaign mode offline is outta control. Cmon on Activision 🤦🏾♂️
They're not going to let people turn it off anymore because they want their SBMM algorithm to manipulate someones bandwidth if playing too good in a lobby they're not supposed to be in.
Is the file size and why they are doing this down to the game engine? If so is it time they changed it to prevent this in the future
2024 and we are talking about streaming texture graphics.. Activision needs to go back to the drawing board.
Why would I pay full price for a game that will literally become unplayble whenever the developers choose to shut down the servers?

Man im tired of cod literally eomm and cringy skins but you keep it up
the biggest issue is that its a CACHE not a download, soo when you reach 62 (not 64) the game will then overwrite meaning their is no end, just give the user an option to download it all like in MW19 high res texture pack for people that have that space. and trow that bandwdith to improving the connection.
FYI the game will use IPV6 connection if you have that enabled for the CDN for the texture.
Get rid of cod hq and allow the textures to be downloaded these devs are incompetent.
