- Chevy wants to destroy Pontiac in 1964! You are losing the sales war Chevy so get out there and fight!
The Catalina is just a stripped-down overpriced car! 2$ extra for a glovebox light??? CMON Pontiac.
1964 Chevy! The car of reality! - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Compared to the Impala, the Catalina had a large 389 V-8 with 2-BBL standard... along with a longer wheelbase, Wide-Trak, and a nicer instrument panel. The Impala was very pretty, but the Catalina was a lot more car for only a little more money.
the Pontiac was also much better looking and a real bargain compared w/ the Chevy
Somehow it just seems odd to see a company compete against itself.
You're thinking of General Motors (obviously), but in this era, the DIvisions operated autonomously and had their own engineering & styling departments.
Possibly the worst were the divisions of the Chrysler Corporation. The original full sized Dodge Dart of 1960 - 1961 competed directly with Plymouth, pricewise, and the Chrysler Newport competed with both Dodge and Plymouth. Sadly, in the process of moving downmarket the medium priced makes weakened any desire for consumers to aspire to owning them.
And a whole separate management... had to cost a lot... Its why Desoto went under... completely separate factory, management etc... Chrysler design dept was at least combined...
Exactly 💯
The Pontiac was a more expensive car.
The Catalonia had a 389 cu. engine as standard, while the Chevy still had a standard 6 cylinder engine, and stick shift
Catalina had an automatic standard.
Biggest problem with the '64 fullsize Chevy is that it looked like the box a '61 came in. Pontiacs sold on style and the '63-4 big ones looked great.
64 has its own style... and a basic grill... Pontiac was certainly launching the iconic two stacked headlights which Ford tried to steal... Ford was notorious for spying :)
@@autochronicles8667 Plymouth and American Motors followed
I had both. I can say without reservation, Pontiacs were more comfortable and way faster.
Two features that have always closed the deal for me: glove box light and back up lights.
thats 25$ today... I think I'd take it... Car makers today wont add a single bolt for 25$... a lighted glove box would be like 150$
@@autochronicles8667 but backup lights, an option? Drivers in 1964 had to watch much more carefully for movement in parking lots! (I know this reflects what was required at the time, and not everything we require today was then. Maybe the sales brochure read “Backup lights … may be deleted for credit”).LOL
The comment about less depreciation for Pontiac was telling. Might the buyer spend a bit more on the Catalina so they would get a better trade in 3-4 years?
@@bc5441 In 1964, the Impala had standard-equipment back-up lights. Extra-cost option on Biscayne and Belair.
this remonds me of a short story to share. I collect old Pontiacs, have hundreds of them, sell parts, trade, etc. For many years, would buy them at impound yards for almost nothing ( $150-250ea ). Most I would take to my acreage, put in a battery and some fresh gas and have a running car. Anyway, some years back, I had just bought a '64 Catalina 4 dr. plain jane, no special options, was worn and had tons of miles on it,. standard 389 2barrel, automatic, etc. Anyway, had a high school friend wanting to help me a bit, to learn about cars, etc. I put a good battery in it, some fresh gas, primed the car and hot wired it to get it running. Once it ran, checked the fluids again. the kid wanted to test drive it, I said, sure see how the trasmission works, etc. Anyway, he was gone for a few mins. came back into my driveway with this super big smile on his face. he said, this car is FAST! faster than my parents cars. Yup, they ran that good. If you ever drove a 64 chev with an optional 283 v8/automatic, you would not feel that way. Pontiac built great cars for many years. find me at Pontiac Heaven .org
I'd probably opt for the Pontiac myself, but a SS convertible would be hard to turn down.
Chevy went "upmarket" with the '58 Impala into Pontiac territory.
In the early '60's, Pontiac was THE style leader, and took Chevy sales, since their markets overlapped.
In Canada, the Chevy 6 was available in Canadian Pontiacs, which outsold Chevy, iirc., because they were priced and marketed in Chevy's range.
In Canada, Pontiacs had the U.S. bodies over Chevrolet engines and transmissions...
Talk about hypocrisy!
I wonder how the owner of both a Chevy AND a Pontiac dealership would think of this filmstrip.
If you were selling to a more frugal buyer, you could say "you're paying more for features you don't need on chevrolet, at Pontiac, we don't force you to have a glovebox light and that saves you $2!"
Usually Chevrolet was paired with Oldsmobile if it was a dual franchise, and Pontiac would be with Buick.
@@nlpnt For smaller dealerships...especially in Canada
\
@@tomservo56954 In Canada, Pontiac was considered a low-price car (Strato-Chief, Laurentian and Parisienne were equivalent to Biscayne, Bel and Impala), and, since there were fewer dealers across Canada, Chevy and Oldsmobile formed one dealer network, and Pontiac and Buick formed the other network. (Cadillacs were sold by either network at their choosing)
You can bet, in the Pontiac dealership, they're watching a film about what a piece of crap the Chevrolet is.
Chevy should have gone after Ford and Plymouth
Chevrolet's main competition was Ford and Plymouth, but all of the "low priced three" were going after medium income buyers, Chevy with first their Bel Air, then the Impala, Ford with first their Fairlane, then their Galaxie, and Plymouth with their Belvedere.
The local Chevrolet/Oldsmobile dealer pissed my dad off in 1962. He went up the street to the Pontiac/Buick dealership and drove Pontiacs, until 1969 when he moved up to Buicks. Even when he wrote their group plan insurance, he still refused to buy from them. Not even an Oldsmobile.
Yeah its funny how many people car dealers do tick off... i guess if your cocky enough to piss off customers you're doing pretty well.
This has to be the strangest comparison I’ve ever seen. GM demeaning it’s own brand.
Pontiac was supposed to be a stepping stone brand. GM should’ve been happy Chevy buyers were moving up to a Pontiac. Then they should trade to an Oldsmobile, then Buick and finally Cadillac.
It's not 'GM' advertising; it's Chevrolet.
different plants... fighting for market share... strange Chevy did greenlight this though... I mean telling your salesman to cr@p on another division? I guess they felt they had all the market? had to take shots at other divisions? They were very different divisions though, different plants and different management.
That was Alfred Sloan's original plan--trading up from Chevy through Cadillac. Somewhere along the way car dealers began selling cars like Procter and Gamble was selling detergents. Yoiu'll recall Tide not only competed against Fab and Rinso Blue, they also competed against their own Cheer, Bold, Gain and Dash...and vice versa
Catalina 389 v8 and 3 speed turbo hadro matic over the 2 speed power guilde with a 409
Catalina had the Roto HydraMatic thru '64. 3-spd, but very different than the THM 400 the next year.
@@WQ59BInv any thing was better than a 2 speed power glide with a big block
My parents always had Chevy's and the first time l got in a Pontiac it was like being in a Couple DeVille
I'll admit im kind of fond of Pontiac :)
Pontiac looks way cooler.
Love the ending which basically says Chevys are garbage cars when it comes to resale value.
Shhhh :) hey but Pontiacs gas mileage sucks!
Oh a Catalina Coupe sounds good 👍
If Chevrolet was so great why did Pontiac hold a much higher resale value?
shhhhhh... :) cmon its more expensive!
It's double talk at it's best. They use the Catalina in every comparison, but keep jumping the Chevy between the Biscayne and Impala. Also, at 300 pounds heavier, naturally the Pontiac gets worse gas milage.
In 2010 they achieved success! They eliminated their sister division 😂
thats a sad day...
You have to really love the "ad speak" of these old video comparisons. It is really funny to see GM trying to tell you that they're low price line is better than their higher price line. As far as the years in question I would take a Pontiac over a Chevy any day of the week. Or even a Buick or an Oldsmobile for that matter.
CMON Pontiac is just selling you overpriced extra stuff you get for free on a Chevy!
0:50 Chevrolet got smart and decided to indulge the buyer in the market of prosperity with the Caprice...
My nephew and I bought our first cars in 1969. He got a Pontiac Catalina 389 4 speed, I got an impala 283 with power glide. His car had way better suspension, much better and quicker steering. My car was junk compared to his
Both our cars were 1964's. His cost $850.00 mine was $1,000
I mean the Pontiac was more expensive :) I guarantee the low priced 3 didn't pay attention to quality as much as the higher priced makes. And remember Pontiac was a very different company than Chevrolet...
film argument: Pontiacs have much higher resale value so move buyers UP? to a Chevy. seems they have up and down confused
typical sales garbage. The Pontiac was such a better car than the chebbies that year. Pontiac- 3 speed auto, Chev 2 speed auto. Pontiac full perimter frame and 4 foot wells for comfort. Chev, x frame and only foot well for rear passenger. chevy- cheap flimsy differentials and 2 piece drive shafts. Pontiac- 9.3 hd rear and straight driveshaft. and on and on. NO, they are NOT the same car. Pontiac was better engineered and better built. keep the chebbies for the low rider crowds
The xframe was revolutionary! cmon :)
Yes. Really stupid. So the Pontiac had a lot better about it, so they focus on options costing slightly less in the Chevy. Trying to appeal to an accountant or someone who knows nothing about cars, going on and on about minutia, covering up the truth about Pontiac being a better car. Basically lying to the customer. The truth is that for maybe 5-10% more, you got a 20-30% better car in the Pontiac. Also, the narrator mentions "let's compare v-8''s with 3 speed automatic transmissions." So a 3 speed auto was available in the Chevy in 64?
I just realized this was only shown to salesmen back in the day. So to get the salesmen to say anything to get them to buy before having time to walk out the door and change their mind, that probably was their M.O.
@@new2000car Not until 1965
Interesting that Pontiac used an X-frame from 1958 through 1960, then switched to a perimeter frame in 1961...
Most of these comparison videos will be manipulated for a desired outcome. That's marketing , that's what you do. Emphasize where your as good or better, ignore or downplay where your product isn't quite as good. GM was wanting to keep the salespeople competitive among divisions for complacency has no place in your sales dept. If they (GM) had 50% of the US Car market, you will want to get increasing share every year and the sales department was the bridge between the car manufacturer and the purchaser so that "never good enough" sales mentality kept the motivation and pressure to perform .
it was war... between the big three... Toss in some Volkwagons also :)
Well.. Of course the Chevrolet costs less than a Pontiac- Its SUPPOSED to by design of the GM brand marketing eschelon! Someone at Chevrolet marketing should have been fired for this comparison.
1964 Pontiac Bonneville sport coupe. I have one and know it is way better than the chev because I never had the chev.
Yeah but the Bonneville was like a million dollars more :)
and you hade 1 cubic foot smaller trunk...
Hhaha 1 cubic foot.@@autochronicles8667
Nope. Bonneville trunk is few inches longer than Catalina....:) I have one and for sure won't trade it for a Chevy... thank you for the nice video!
A classic case of sibling rivalry.
