Oh thank goodness I went before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Apparently from what I've heard is that is has gotten way worse because of all the construction to modernize everything
wowwwww im a lil bit surprised! hahahaha well...if u cannot imagine driving in beijing u should drive in indonesia (esp jakarta) then. its awesome here XD or maybe have you ever watch on youtube "dont drive here"? yeah...u can imagine through watching that show....XD
Talking about traffic, then come to my house in Indonesia. You'll be amazed by how bad the traffic is here. Even I wan't to move from here, when I was in high school, I thought I'll go crazy because of this traffic jam things that I needed to face everyday. I think another place in Indonesia doesn't have this kinda bad traffic. But I don't know what happen with my place.___.
In Scotland if the temperature gets up to 16 or higher, and is actually sunny for a change, the local Glasgow phrase is "taps aff," meaning "tops off." People strip as naked as local law allows and sunbathe on any available surface, including hanging out of second story windows. You have to wear sunglasses just to combat the glare of so much pasty Scottish flesh.
I mean it kind of makes sense, having your shirt off in summer. Trying to get a bit of a tan. Mowing the lawn though... Better to have a mini ecosystem as your front lawn with plants that grow locally. Lawns are easy to have, grow and maintain in parts of Great Britain where the concept originated from. Other parts of the world have different climate, species of plants etc. And what's wrong with guys being shirtless?
I am in winnipeg, canada and my 50 something neighbor man is currently mowing the lawn shirtless in jean short shorts with the pocket hangings out the bottom with flip flops. I do not think this man fears anything, not the lawn mower that could cut off his foot or the sun that is burning his already red and crispy old man hide plus he keeps waving to me even though I am inside my house.
In the UK whenever the sun is out and it's at least 15C guys start taking their tops off! I think people get so excited by sun and its not even warm and they go out sunbathing or swimming in the river.. The UK embraces nipples.
I remember being in a taxi in the Himalayan foothills. It was a rainy night, I didn't have a seat belt, and the driver was winding down the mountainside without using gas or the breaks. So safe, so safe.
cleodel88 I've been to Beijing, but I honestly think India wins this round in terms of scaring foreigners. :c Per capita deaths has China in the lead by a small margin though (and now I know to avoid cars in Eritrea).
I actually traveled in the eastern part of India in the mountains. Both times I traveled by taxi it was pretty safe, but the roads were so narrow and undeveloped, I was pretty sure I thought I had a good chance of dying. Even worse, I saw local rickety buses go down the dirt roads full of people right near the edge of the slope. .-.
"YOUR LIFE IS ABOUT TO DIE. " and btw the editing in this video was absolutely fabulous like I couldn't even. if this was martina......you're a genie. especially the part where you were talking about your lymph nodes. (the music!!!!!!!) hahahaha
I complained about driving in china and my Indian friend told me driving in India is the same except throw cows into the traffic. I would think India wins.
I'm not sure about other guys but In the U.S. It's pretty common.I live in Florida so the weather is pretty hot and sticky, personally me as a guy with muscular and manly physique I have my shirt off 24/7 DONT JUDGE ME! I'm fabulous!
***** tokekiex The struggle is real in Florida and the men...the ones that are wise (my polite way of saying old)...please put on a muscle tee or something because I just CAN'T!! #thestruggleisrealtho
Even in the US it's not that common, unless you're running or jogging. I seen one dude topless at grocery store. Everyone was staring at the dude with the same expression on their face "WTF is wrong with him?"
I live in CA. I don't see too many men shirtless, but every now and then there will be a guy jogging shirtless and people might stare a bit. It's not a huge deal but it's not common either.
beijing's air is one of the worst in china.guangdong, fujian, yunnan province are much better.but you cant ignore that a lot of countries set their factories in china. thats not our fault.you have to know that everybody wants a good air.we want it too.but the situation is we cant do anything.
Well in a sense of cruelty yes. It was quite one sided too since Korea was never interested in invading Japan. But, as long as number of casualties of the war wise, Korea and China did have some intense shit going on too(mainly in ancient days except in Korean war)
Yes, my dad is one of them but he does not have ignorant hatred against Japan.(he does hate ultra nationalists there) Sure, Japanese government has done some fucked up shits so did Korean government too. That does not give anyone any right to talk shit on the ethnic as whole.
I think the eastern Asian culture in general are extremely nationalistic(maybe the Korea is slightly more intense due to army service) I hope those ignorant people learn that Korea would have not been as successful as now without economic alliance with the Japan. It seems like some of us, Koreans, have inferiority against countries with greater power.
***** if you're not a korean then i really think you have no -fucking- right to say something like "omg guys what's happend in the past is a thing of past just forget about it" if you are then you're just a really bad idiot.
Kory Kwon you mean after japan destroyed korea to bottom 1% gdp and then they did korea so much favor that korea rose up to top 15 economy? idiots, idiots, complete utter idiots.
I see that a lot of the comments are saying that men in their country go shirtless when its hot. But, is there a country where the women go shirtless when its hot?!
Eat Your Kimchi im sure this is simon that commented! hahahaha! OCSleazy The Philippines is a country where you'll find both ends of the world. Traditional which is very Asia and quite advance +english literacy which is very western. Filipinos are unlike a lot of our asian neighbors that has a distinctive identity, we are a mixture of all, you can see our history right in our very face and everyday living with spanish, american and japanese cultures ubiquitously intertwined with some surviving traditional practices. Since you are visiting Binondo try doing food trips there -they have really good chinese food there.... stop by the longos cross near ongpin as youll see how chinese traditions and christian belief had fusion. I wish i could tell you more buti dont wanna spam simon and martina's page.... you'll enjoy the Philippines just know what and where to find it ;)
zOAngelOz Booo, I don't just want to see that on the beach. XD Though where I live you could only reasonably go topless during the Summer, or else your "free nipples" will be frozen, shattered into tiny bits, and on the ground as you flail around aimlessly in shock before you die from the cold in a very painful way. T__T
Don't go to Beijing if you're a foreigner...just don't for all the humanity in the world. The majority of local Chinese (especially in highly industrial provinces) grow up breathing in bad air so they kinda physically adapt to the awful environment. I left China when I was 13 (which is a bit too early and so I didn't adapt as well as local chinese;) and now, everytime when I go to visit my family, I DIE........nearly. And my family's not in Beijing. Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in China and please avoid it for your life property... I suggest travelling to YunNan, SiChuan, XinJiang or some other less populated parts of China. I travelled to those places and they were far less polluted, also fun with great local food.
coooldonkey they adapted! They developed some kind of immunity system against pollution. But I hear often from chinese immigrants in Europe that when they go back to china to visit family or travel they have a hard time breathing and feel sick,
I have read that food safety incidents have occurred frequently over the years in China, It's people have developed some immunity to contamination in food which will make normal human beings sick to death
I absolutely adore you guys! As a full blooded Korean, I approve of your messages! Where habe you guys been all my life?! Your descriptions of EVERYTHING cracks me up! I especially love the ramen video and the Korean pizza video! I totally agree! No one would believe me about the strange pizzas!
I'm so excited for your coffee shop! I'm definitely going to find time to take a trip over there. Maybe during Obon or one of the other festival weeks we have off.
k speaking of that, while this was many years ago, the first time I was in Vietnam, on our way out of the airport to our relatives' house where we were staying, there was totally a dead guy on the street, who'd been hit by a car...and all the other cars just kept going, occasionally bumping or running over him...Scarred for life, man. But really, I guess it's just scary when you're not used to it.
Haha I went to Beijing a few years ago... The friend we were traveling with put it this way: "The lines in the road are nothing but art." GOSH IT'S SO TRUE. And when I went, there were hardly any foreigners! We stood out a lot, and lots of people were taking pictures of us and feeling our (my) blonde hair. And (Ah this is like a running paragraph) YUSH THE AIR IS MURDER. Thankfully, it rained in the last few days we were there, so it totally cleaned the air into pure bliss... BUT, that resulted in all the cars/buildings being COVERED in a dust layer. It pretty much rained mud. AHHHH. Wonderful place though XD
- Never a boring moment with you two! Almost choked laughing with "Love is the moment" at the end. -I also had that "I'm sorry for saying your driving is bad" moment. I honestly thought that back home in Puerto Rico both traffic and our driving were horrible (including myself... according to my mother) but now that I'm in Brazil doing an exchange I apologize sincerely. Where I'm currently at they actually speed up when they see you crossing the streets. I almost died the other day while going back from the grocery store. - and yes, men not wearing t-shirts is quite common in PR. Since it's always hot is not strange, in those who have the body and those who don't...unfortunately.
Skin Cancer is a serious issue here in Australia, people don't use as much sunscreen as they should. Especially the guys, most blokes think it's useless.
Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in China due to the fact that a huge chunk of the population lives there. Next time, visit cities like Xian or Chongqing! Less populated cities with their own style of Chinese cultures.
@wesscoast my mistake. I just checked related information, and I found out there has been heavy fog in chongqing 30 years ago. Now, there is heavy smog in chongqing.
The air is not great in China obviously but it really isn't that bad, definitely not necessary to wear mask...I think it's your subconsciousness...when you think it's bad you will physically feel it as well
I was in Xi'an and Chengdu recently and honestly the air was so bad and it was really hard to breathe. The southern parts of China and HK don't suffer as much though luckily
+vivelafandom I don't think your "subconsciousness" or the "placebo effect" reduces people's life expectancy by 15 years if you live in Beijing. I mean, you can see the pollution in Beijing from space. I don't think it's in their heads...
Sable Rain well obviously if you breathe the air everyday then its gonna have an effect...i mean its not like you visit beijing, you land in the city and the moment you step out you'll cough to death...i go back once in a while to china, the sky is definitely not clear like out here in europe or australia where i lived all my life, but you dont actually "feel" the air pollution...its not like methane or sth which you can sense, its not even stuffy like you imagine...its invisible...so yea...i think its in their heads
Shanghai is much more adapted to having foreigners, so it is a lot easier to get around without being stared at etc. I've been to both shanghai and Beijing, and I've noticed that pretty much everywhere in China (regardless northern or southern) older ppl tend to be more "rude" as in they are not as adapted to the modern concepts of manners
I was thinking about this shirtless thing just recently. I live in Russia St.Petersburg. And in my city it's a very odd thing to see a shirtless person. Srsly - very very very rare. But when I was in Moscow I saw lots of men without shirts on the streets. I think the same thing is in little towns too. St.Petersburg is said to be a culture capital of Rissia and people call it a part of Europe and I guess it is really so.
I know it's been 2 years that this video have been upload but it's been 2 months since I've found your channel and you guys are simply amazing. The subjects, your humour, your style, the editing, I mean like everything is just perfect. You are Simon and Martina, simply as that.I know you guys are in Japan now so no more videos about Korea but please, never stop your good work. Can't wait to learn more about Japan as well! Thanks for existing and making my days better.
I visited Beijing in May 2009 for a few days while visiting my former in-laws with my ex husband. We experienced something probably very rare in Beijing... CLEAR BLUE SKY! I'm not kidding! We had CLEAR SKY :O I never noticed bad air quality while there, nor did I notice it in Shanghai. Not too bad at least. I spent most of my time in China in Suzhou and it's (for China) a medium sized city with only about some 10 million people or so, the air quality was definitely better there than in Shanghai but yeah, I never felt sick from poor air quality anywhere when I visited China and I'd be there for 3-4 weeks at a time. I went around by car a lot both in Suzhou, Shanghai and Beijing and never had an accident, so I guess I was fortunate enough to have a good driver lol The traffic in China is crazy, but it's some kind of disorganized chaos and it just works. There's also only one rule: Honk and drive :P
Omg same. I experience the clear blue sky in Beijing, but that was because of this huge rainstorm that hasn't happened for a long time. It was amazing after the rain, 3 days of clear blue sky.
I was there in May so it was in the 30's Celsius and no rain. But yeah, I didn't believe my eyes when it was so clear because I had heard about the smog and smoke of Beijing before I went.
+Jennie Svensson There is a HUGE difference between beijing 2009 and bejing now. HUGE. I never noticed the bad air quality before, when I went back to China. It really changed the past 2 years or so.
+Jennie Svensson It is clear my friend. Now lots of factories are moving out and government is trying to do something good for its citizens and tourists. I'm from a town near Suzhou and it's really nice here. Welcome to China again my friend! :)
u should visit shanghai or hong kong!! every city in china, including beijing, is very different from each other, in terms of food, culture and scenery. dont overgeneralise but i agree that traffic is just bad everywhere in china lol
Your description of China sounded pretty similar to India. I've been to Kolkata, and, the driving is INTENSELY TERRIFYING! I've been in rickshaws that swerved into the opposite lane with oncoming traffic. It was also pretty difficult to cross the street as a pedestrian! Getting across the street without being hit by a car was intense! Traffic lights do not make a difference, which is different compared to Japan. When I was in Japan, everyone obeyed the traffic laws!
Lol whenever you guys are like "What is it like in your country?" I can't say anything because not only am I also from Canada but I'm from Toronto so you guys already know!
Do Not go to Beijing in summer! It is very hot and air very dry and dusty. Korea is next to the ocean, the air is not so dry and dusty. The best month for Beijing is April to May and October to November. I lived in Beijing for 19 years, summer and winter are brutal. It is not uncommon to have 40 degree summer day with no wind! As for shirtless, let's just say that a lot men in the northern areas are not very fashion conscious. They are very comfortable with their body. Hehe
The driving & traffic in BKK is also really bad! I was in Thailand for 3 weeks in december and I witnessed 3 car accidents! Omfg also I don't understand why they don't use their seat belts!!! I was like "Why don't you wear your seat belt?" My friend "Because I don't like wearing it" WTF?! Well, I hope you can come to Thailand one day! =) Awesome people, food and culture!
I know this is a year old now but it would be cool to hear a little bit more about Martina's knitting, maybe hear how she got into it, what kind of stuff she's made, etc. I don't know if many people will be interested but I got into it around the same time and I found it was really awesome for achieving almost a meditative calm, while still being productive.
The t-shirt lifting, belly scratching is sooooo common in china and HK, anywhere in public they just scratch away. Im not sure whats more awkward, scratching your butt or belly in public xD
I found nothing wrong with being shirtless in a hot summer. I don't know why some people find that "shocking". Like are you easily turned on ,or you enjoy having a wet back. People in korea don't sweat? Men sweat more than women
Actually, asian people have smaller sweat glands and a different system when it comes to that from what I understand, so no, they actually don't sweat as much as whites or blacks do. Modesty is a huge thing in a lot of countries and some are sexually deprived so being turned on easily might actually be a thing (I don't think South Korea has that) that and it's not pretty to see an overweight person with out a shirt unless it's by their partner.
Freja Nordvoss You are making such a general idea on specific cases. Even asians generally are like that doesn't mean everyone is. oh ya, overweight people sweat more, so you knew the answer. And what are you talking about, Korea used to have a history that even women would expose their breasts- - ya, like everything. Don't expect me skipped my history class.
Oh, sorry. I didnt see it. Feel kind of dumb now :-/ But, thank you :-D I will check it out right now (This is me inside of my head:OMG! Eat your kimchi just replied my post!!!! *o*)
Angel Core I am pretty sure u regretted after seeing the comment section all the Kook bbongs and Japanese extremists fighting each other.. it is pretty nasty there
Driving in Vietnam is like that too! The only thing harder is everyone is riding motorcycles and that there are a couple of taxis around or cars. Driving is pretty random there because while I was trying to cross the street it was barren in Hue then suddenly a motor comes by and almost runs ME over.
OMG THE ROLLEP UP TSHIRTS!!! I will never get over that. My life had been divided in B.RUT and A.RUT. I understand that when I went it was summer but... Stahp that!!!
Well, I live in Las Vegas and y'all know IT'S HOT. So it is pretty common in the summer to see tourist walking down the casino Strip without their top...mostly guys...but I've seen younger girls walk with a bikini top (not their bra, thank goodness) since there's so many pools in the casino...but it's not as common 'cuz people do stare.
What's the difference between a bikini top and a bra? They cover up pretty much the same amount of skin (obviously that depends on the style and all...)
WorldParticles Well, for example, I wouldn't feel comfortable going to the pool with my bra but if it were a bikini top, I can at least go with it. But I am too conservative for 2-piece tbh...
See, it' just all social conventions. Which I am not in favour of when there is no point to them. I mean, I wouldn't be entirely comfortable entering the pool in a bra because the material is not made for it (although, thinking of it, maybe it wouldn't matter, idk). But walking around in my bra as opposed to walking around in a bikini top? The only reason to care is what is socially acceptable (or at least more socially acceptable). Honestly, I prefer the one piece too.
WorldParticles True. It really depends on that person too...like I said, it's still pretty rare for girls to walk around in a hot summer day with just a bikini top, but I've seen it happened. And many years ago I read that in France, people go naked in the beach...? That would be wayyyy weird here in the States.
Well both could work fine but if they don't want to create a whole video to show them talking Korean they could pick an old video and take the sound off and replace it with them dubbing it in Korean
After visiting Seoul for a week, I studied in Beijing for 9 weeks last summer through the Harvard Beijing Academy, so I can definitely relate to some of the comparisons you guys made! I had a great summer in Beijing, but I only saw blue sky about 4 times in the span of a 9 week period. I didn't consider myself much of an environmental activist before, but I definitely am now. Also LOL at the Chinese dudes pulling their shirts up and patting their big bellies. That's definitely a theme throughout China.
I've lived in Korea and been to Beijing for a week. Surprisingly, the people that I've interacted with in Beijing were really friendly. Also, the city is actually cleaner than I expected. I would really like to visit more parts in China.
When I went to China last year, the air quality wasn't that bad. But then again, it was winter time and most of the hotels that I stayed in were somewhere in the mountains so the air was fresher
Simon and Martina Haha not really, since I live in a tropical country, it is like 32-33 degrees all year round so I've lived my whole life sweating buckets everyday 😂😂 90% of my trip was me praying that I won't freeze to death and wishing that I was back home. It was a cool experience experiencing snow for the first time though!
When I was in Ecuador (Quito), traffic was like Martina described - lanes were just a suggestion and at every intersection cars just crept into any open space they could find that was closest to the light. Also, I left the city numerous times on trips, and on two separate occasions I saw tour buses that had flipped and gone off the road because the driver was taking a turn too fast. Crazy. What I loved though is people not being afraid to use their horn to assert themselves. I tried doing this when I returned to the states (out of then habit) and got a LOT of stank eye glances!!
Probably not a really relevant story but my friend and I were biking and we saw this guy without his shirt and he had Siwon abs, they were that good Im not even joking! My friend ran into a stop sign because she was too busy staring. It was hilarious.
Oh boy, the coffee shop! I should be coming to korea for the 2015-2016 school year so it'll be all open and stuff, and I love to crochet! plus i suck at making friends an meeting people so this sounds like a good thing. On another note, shirtlessness is super common in the states (though i'm pretty sure that's just like a known fact)- one of my neighbors used to be known in my household because we had never actually seen him wear a shirt. i mean people might not go into town without a shirt (some people do, but since you need a shirt to go into most shops, not many) but at home sure. women are honestly more common to see without shirts in town- i see women in just sports bras all the time (usually running).
I agree on the Yeouido skyline. When I got to Seoul I went to my hotel in Yeouido by subway at night, but the next day I sat by the river by the floating theater and the view was great with the central park and the 63 building.
In the UK, if there is the tiniest bit of sun. People start walking around shirtless and try to wear the least amount of clothes possible without getting arrested lol. Us Brits go crazy over the sun :)
When it's warm in Sweden it's extremely common to see guys, no matter what age, shirtless. Even them old ones with beer tummy. ^^ It's very common to see girls/women showing a lot of skin as well. Nothing many really thinks about here I guess. If it's hot it's hot! xD
What was it like moving abroad? Was it hard to pick what to pack, were there hang ups in getting your paperwork? How was trying to find a place to live?
Im a Saudi living in Korea and i went to Hong Kong for a visit , i totally agree with you guys . i have experienced everything you did. GOD BLESS KOREA
i went to fushun (near sheng yang) because my extended family is there. food is good. but EVERYONE SMOKES AND NO ONE SHAVES AND MEN ARE PRETTY MUCH NAKED AND BATHROOMS SMELL AND I HAD DIARRHEA EVERY NIGHT FOR 20 SOMETHING DAYS. but the lamb skewers were good.
I'm a South Korean who has lived in India for 19 years, and I have just come to Korea to attend Yonsei University. And I can guarantee that driving in India is terrifying. Korean roads are the safest roads i've ever been on ^ ^
King Kyong do you think that, if Indian see your comment, they are happy? The social order in every country has got better and better. Please remember that traffic situation in Korea in 1990 were a far worse than in 2017. Please do not compare, and try to understand and respect them first.
I know this doesn't have anything to do with most of the video, but in terms of the bit you said at the end: I'm so excited that your coffee shop should be up and running by the time I get there in September! Martina I taught myself to crochet and can definitely teach you if you want!! I had a lot of trouble learning to knit when I was younger, but crocheting is super simple, so if you've mastered knitting you can definitely crochet.
Jesus Christ the amount of hate I'm reading here, well any topic relating to China vs Korea vs Japan or US vs UK vs Russia whatever will generally end in tears. Not sure does Eat Your Kimchi really thought about the concussion of this topic, however here's my small opinion. I'm a Hong Kong Chinese that lives in the UK and I do check the news/read newspapers quite frequently tbh I hear more stuff about China than any other parts Asia, some news are good some are bad but in the whole China has become more important as a world player. However China is still a developing country and there are a lot to improve upon which I'm sure you can name a few. Currently here in the UK there are a lot of mainland Chinese and the first thing I notice they speak very loud mandarin and some do look very ragged like they just crawled out of the cave. Some of them are very rational and will kill you with words if you say something they don't like. Koreans and Japanese I see them as more considerate and polite compared to Chinese that I can't deny, perhaps thats the difference between people from the developing country compared to the people of the developed. However 10-20 years from now what will happen....China mostly likely will become world number one economy and gain the true superpower status. Surely by then things should improve and most of the negative stuff should disappear.....hopefully... I'm not China bashing, I just operate on tough love.
About the staring thing; Me and my family went on a charter trip to China a month ago, and spent the most time in Beijing. We're swedish, so to the Chinese people we look very different. So different that even the travel books talks about the staring. People there don't seem to have a culture to look away (as we have severely in Sweden) so it felt very weird with people constantly looking at your face. Directly. They seemed to immediately see that you were a foreigner, doing second glances and turning their heads. At some popular tourist places people would ask to take a picture with us or even just stand with their phones in our direction, not even slightly discreetly taking a picture! But it was all fun, and for that time it only felt like flatter (I can imagine it getting tiring for foreigners living there). Any others who's experienced the same thing?
Meme Ching Oh has it gotten better. I visited couple of countries in China in my teens...I agree with what S&M said about Beijing and all the big cities I visited. But Hong Kong was pretty bad too...the air, I mean. Although it was not as bad as the other main cities.
Well HK's air quality is probably bad but you wont feel like coughing up ur guts the moment u left a building. The main thing i find annoying about the HK is the humidity but i guess that applies to most of china.
I didn't really know about how bad China's airwas until I met a student from China in my uni and we were talking over dinner and she said one thing she loves about America is how clean the air is. Hearing your guys and her experience makes me so grateful for the clean air in the US at least where I am o;
Well I've been to Beijing and Qingdao in China for a couple of weeks during the winter when the temperatures were around 1 or 2 degrees and i'm sorry but I didn't share the same experiences as you did , probably that's due to the fact that I'm from India and the situation is actually pretty bad here and my immunity towards the "Bad Air" has improved ;)
It's opening in july??? Awesome. I'm coming to Korea in January and I really want to visit :D I live in Australia and I always find it hard to get good coffee in other places so I want to check out your coffee shop!
I've never been to China, but my dad has many times. He's been to different parts of Asia soooo many times. I remember him telling me about how he got so sick there. Like the second he was outside he felt really sick. I don't remember anything else besides him talking about it being hot and how sick it was. And the shirtless thing. We're originally from Jamaica. Honestly, if you have a shirt on or not doesn't really matter there. My family owns a store and to be honest there's some days where my uncle just rings people up behind the register with no shirt or shoes on. Like if some guy in the middle of the city has no shirt on he wont get an weird looks. It's not normal or anything, but it's not abnormal either if that makes sense.
it was an interesting video and it's just your opinion and experience, but i wanna comment on the smog thing, because i've lived in beijing for a whole year and i don't share your experience. i never had any pain from the air and i didn't even wear a mask. i only wore a mask during winter time, because that's when the pollution gets really REALLY bad, also because of all the coal heating. i think you exaggerated a bit with the whole dramatical music, that kind of got on my nerves, because it will make people think, beijing is /always/ polluted and everyone will get pain from just walking down the street. i know the pollution got worse again, but in general it's something you can deal with. i had no problem and it's not like beijing is ALWAYS polluted. the sky is super beautifully blue after a rainy day/night. so it'll be just sad if people decide not to travel to beijing just bc of the air. well. just my opinion.
Really @.@ i don't find it that bad compare to what Simon and Martina said about others countries. And i live in Hanoi, that pretty much the worst place to drive
I live in London and on the few days of the year that we get to remind ourselves of what the sun looks and feels like, its pretty common to see men walking down the street without shirts. I have to say that it does become less common in central London though.
I am korean and I wanna visit china someday. There is a big rumor in korea that chinese man are so nice to their family. Is it real? I think chinese man are attractive too like exomXD
I went to China years ago, and Beijing actually turned out to be the place with best air for all of that trip. In Shang hai it was gray skies the whole time, but we actually saw some blue in Beijing. As for the air quality, I never noticed it. Maybe it was the wrong time of year, of maybe Iwas just used to it by then.
After spending a few days in Beijing we noticed a few differences between China and Korea. We're gonna talk about this and more for this week's TL;DR
Did you guys use the red taxis? I heard they're more scary than the regular taxis there
I went a couple months ago. Never. Going. Back.
Scarred for LIFE
I like Martina's pink eyebrows ^^
Come to Hong Kong!!! Its totally different than Mainland China.
Oh thank goodness I went before the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Apparently from what I've heard is that is has gotten way worse because of all the construction to modernize everything
Indonesian subs now up as well. Party!
Ooooh Indonesian cool :D
I like her shirt.
wowwwww im a lil bit surprised! hahahaha
well...if u cannot imagine driving in beijing u should drive in indonesia (esp jakarta) then. its awesome here XD or maybe have you ever watch on youtube "dont drive here"? yeah...u can imagine through watching that show....XD
But I don't know what happen with my place.___.
sunsunmeey i feel you jakarta dude...hahahhaa XD im from bandung and this ramadhan..the traffic jam here is no joke.

We've got English subs up now. Woohoo!
Oh dear, in the Midwest in America, if you drive through any neighborhood in the summer, you'll see some shirtless guy moving his lawn XD
so true!! whenever i go home to ohio (july/june esp) EVERY ADULT MAN is mowing a lawn, drinking bud light, shirtless XDXD #scarred
Im in minnesota and right now you see people shirtless shoveling their driveway
Another Winterpeg!(⌒▽⌒)
Ruiyi Wu
Hells yeh!!!
I also remember seeing an honest-to-god flattened public bus being hauled away after it must have fallen off the cliff.
cleodel88 I've been to Beijing, but I honestly think India wins this round in terms of scaring foreigners. :c
Per capita deaths has China in the lead by a small margin though (and now I know to avoid cars in Eritrea).
BEARDLESS SIMON OMG THIS ALWAYS SURPRISES ME WHEN I REWATCH OLD VIDEOS
I complained about driving in china and my Indian friend told me driving in India is the same except throw cows into the traffic. I would think India wins.
I'm not sure about other guys but In the U.S. It's pretty common.I live in Florida so the weather is pretty hot and sticky, personally me as a guy with muscular and manly physique I have my shirt off 24/7 DONT JUDGE ME! I'm fabulous!
*****
tokekiex The struggle is real in Florida and the men...the ones that are wise (my polite way of saying old)...please put on a muscle tee or something because I just CAN'T!! #thestruggleisrealtho
Even in the US it's not that common, unless you're running or jogging. I seen one dude topless at grocery store. Everyone was staring at the dude with the same expression on their face "WTF is wrong with him?"
YYAAAAASSS!!!!!! FABULOUSNESS OVERLOAD~~!!! evn though I don't know you.
Xentradi97 No Shirt! No Shoes! No Service! is still a common sign in the south.
I live in CA. I don't see too many men shirtless, but every now and then there will be a guy jogging shirtless and people might stare a bit. It's not a huge deal but it's not common either.
MARTINA'S BOW IS ADORABLE AND I DEMAND A TUTORIAL
beijing's air is one of the worst in china.guangdong, fujian, yunnan province are much better.but you cant ignore that a lot of countries set their factories in china. thats not our fault.you have to know that everybody wants a good air.we want it too.but the situation is we cant do anything.
I am so happy how people are not fighting as much as Japan VS Korea... it was disgusting to watch.
You know...for science!
Right...for what other reason is there!
I wish i could tell you more buti dont wanna spam simon and martina's page.... you'll enjoy the Philippines just know what and where to find it ;)
In Denmark and France some women are topless on the beach ... Free the nipples!
zOAngelOz Booo, I don't just want to see that on the beach.
I travelled to those places and they were far less polluted, also fun with great local food.
ship them off to Shenzen. Half as hazardous. Beijing (along with New Delhi) is probably the most polluted city on the planet
yep, 1.3 billion breathing unhabitable air and somehow surviving, chinese magic right ther
coooldonkey they adapted!
***** They got sick but keep on living so. They won't go down with the sickness!
Can you do a tutorial on the hairstyle you have right now Martina? It's super cute!
Are Martina's brows dyed pink? That's so cute!
Sorry, I'm slightly off topic. Nice topic you guys!
Ok add Vietnam into your list of bad drivers! Vietnam is soo tiny but it has soooo many people! The driving their is so freaking INSANE!
Couldent Agree more
BUT, you'll rarely see an accident. People there mastered the dodging skill when they drive.
k speaking of that, while this was many years ago, the first time I was in Vietnam, on our way out of the airport to our relatives' house where we were staying, there was totally a dead guy on the street, who'd been hit by a car...and all the other cars just kept going, occasionally bumping or running over him...Scarred for life, man.
But really, I guess it's just scary when you're not used to it.
k I think because they drive slow. I seen loads of bikes going all sorts of direction but didn't see anyone overly speeding.
saerilee that sounds very unfortunate and disturbing... :(
Haha I went to Beijing a few years ago...
Ugh Martina give me your hair! It's ridiculously fabulous. It's amazing in every video
Everyone is shirtless in Australia! Seriously... in summer, guys refuse to wear shirts.
Hopefully they slather on plenty of sunscreen...that hole in the ozone layer over AUS is HUGE...
Skin Cancer is a serious issue here in Australia, people don't use as much sunscreen as they should. Especially the guys, most blokes think it's useless.
dayum, sexy aussie men! Super jealous
back when i visited Sydney during summer..shirtless men with boardy shorts were everywhere!! drool moment indeed~
Ditto for New Zealand!
Beijing is one of the most polluted cities in China due to the fact that a huge chunk of the population lives there. Next time, visit cities like Xian or Chongqing! Less populated cities with their own style of Chinese cultures.
***** if you compare the population, yes!
@wesscoast I think you are confused by fog(not smog because this kind of heavy fog has been there for hundred years) in chongqing.
@wesscoast my mistake. I just checked related information, and I found out there has been heavy fog in chongqing 30 years ago. Now, there is heavy smog in chongqing.
Yuxuan Yang haters gonna hate
KawaiiKiwi08 you re so right why i smell so much hate on beijing
The air is not great in China obviously but it really isn't that bad, definitely not necessary to wear mask...I think it's your subconsciousness...when you think it's bad you will physically feel it as well
placibo effect
I was in Xi'an and Chengdu recently and honestly the air was so bad and it was really hard to breathe. The southern parts of China and HK don't suffer as much though luckily
+vivelafandom I don't think your "subconsciousness" or the "placebo effect" reduces people's life expectancy by 15 years if you live in Beijing. I mean, you can see the pollution in Beijing from space. I don't think it's in their heads...
Sable Rain well obviously if you breathe the air everyday then its gonna have an effect...i mean its not like you visit beijing, you land in the city and the moment you step out you'll cough to death...i go back once in a while to china, the sky is definitely not clear like out here in europe or australia where i lived all my life, but you dont actually "feel" the air pollution...its not like methane or sth which you can sense, its not even stuffy like you imagine...its invisible...so yea...i think its in their heads
vivelafandom
Ok, thanks for pointing that out.
Pink eyebrows! Martina is definitely catching onto the Korean makeup trend of colorful eyebrows. I think TOP started it with his blue eyebrows.
Martina's "Sorry" is so Canadian. :D
Can anyone in Russia access the Internet? And is there heavy censorship there? Serious questions.
"I need to go back to my mind palace," I almost spit out my drink from the Sherlock reference.
I was knitting as I watched this video LOL Really excited about the coffee shop! It'll be fun to visit when I'm a teacher in Korea!
Are Martina's eyebrows pink?
No it's purple...im jk yeah she likes pink and it match her hair :)
I thought i was the only one who noticed that lol XD
But yeah, I didn't believe my eyes when it was so clear because I had heard about the smog and smoke of Beijing before I went.
very objective
+Jennie Svensson There is a HUGE difference between beijing 2009 and bejing now. HUGE. I never noticed the bad air quality before, when I went back to China. It really changed the past 2 years or so.
+Jennie Svensson It is clear my friend. Now lots of factories are moving out and government is trying to do something good for its citizens and tourists. I'm from a town near Suzhou and it's really nice here. Welcome to China again my friend! :)
I grew up in shanghai...went to beijing and almost died...thats saying something.
grew up in beijing went to shanghai to see the expo and almost died. Hahaha
u should visit shanghai or hong kong!! every city in china, including beijing, is very different from each other, in terms of food, culture and scenery. dont overgeneralise but i agree that traffic is just bad everywhere in china lol
***** toronto ? RV's wendy is from there hehehhe just saying
***** I am from sweden ,so it is pretty safe.
I so love Martina's brows.
Thanks guise for another amazing video!
Lots of love from Poland !
The next TL DR about two countries could be japan vs korea???
We've already done one of those for a TL;DR. You should check it out :D Korea vs Japan
Oh, sorry. I didnt see it. Feel kind of dumb now :-/
But, thank you :-D I will check it out right now
(This is me inside of my head:OMG! Eat your kimchi just replied my post!!!! *o*)
Eat Your Kimchi Do a TL;DR on my question about English language education and why Soo Zee's English is so good!!
Angel Core I am pretty sure u regretted after seeing the comment section all the Kook bbongs and Japanese extremists fighting each other.. it is pretty nasty there
Kory Kwon well, I enjoyed the video but you're right!! The comment section has nothing nice to see...
Do Simon and Martina speak Korean, I know they've said they're learning it in the past but what about now?
I think they're both near on fluent now :)
Would be cool if they dubbed a video in Korean or something. They make a video in mostly Korean as well, it would be nice to see
Vigilantiee do you mean subbed?
Well both could work fine but if they don't want to create a whole video to show them talking Korean they could pick an old video and take the sound off and replace it with them dubbing it in Korean
Charlie Sora they're conversational at best
so glad im not living in BJ. only because of the air quality.
Shouldn't you be happy to not be living in China at all with the censorship?
nope i love China lol
oh and I am not in China now.
Pollution is serious problem but you don't get a say because you are a property of the state. Sucks!
Thumbs up to Martina for using the term "mind palace"
Elementary
Driving in Manila is pretty much a walk in a park, JURASSIC PARK.
what I love about China? FOOD, culture, architecture, and the folks :)
When I went to China last year, the air quality wasn't that bad. But then again, it was winter time and most of the hotels that I stayed in were somewhere in the mountains so the air was fresher
I imagine mountain air hotels VS city in the summer are very different. Sounds like you had an epic time!
Will the coffee be like free? Or...
Or
lol free coffee...pfffft.
but i now want some fancy coffee...TO THE COFFEE SHOP!
Beijing smog is almost as bad as the historical London Fog. They say its starting to get real bad in China with the smog.
***** lmao need to rephrase haha
When I got to Seoul I went to my hotel in Yeouido by subway at night, but the next day I sat by the river by the floating theater and the view was great with the central park and the 63 building.
come to manila, then you'll know what real bad traffic is! and also shirtlessness. ;)
Koreans bad drivers ??? Never !!!!.......well.........not all the time, just sometimes. :-P
Ji
I will experience this first hand in 2 weeks. i heard the traffic is bad there. like there is only one major highway and only 2 lanes.
i will go for jolibeee
Manila/Philippines isn't as advanced As China, Korea, Japan, And Malaysia.... so im not sure if they will go.
.:J.M.Concept:. Hows the food and do you recommend any tourist sites in or around manila.
If it's hot it's hot! xD
Same in Iceland XD
What was it like moving abroad? Was it hard to pick what to pack, were there hang ups in getting your paperwork? How was trying to find a place to live?
Im a Saudi living in Korea and i went to Hong Kong for a visit , i totally agree with you guys . i have experienced everything you did. GOD BLESS KOREA
i went to fushun (near sheng yang) because my extended family is there. food is good. but EVERYONE SMOKES AND NO ONE SHAVES AND MEN ARE PRETTY MUCH NAKED AND BATHROOMS SMELL AND I HAD DIARRHEA EVERY NIGHT FOR 20 SOMETHING DAYS. but the lamb skewers were good.
i love how you ended with "but the [food] were good." food is all that matters! :D
End it on a good note XD
I laughed so hard at this ;P
I read this is a mad aggressive voice but then I reached the end and it was like "but the lamb skewers were good =)"
lol beijing's traffic is not even the worst. freaking pedestrians cross the street in the middle of no where in like busy traffic.
I'm a South Korean who has lived in India for 19 years, and I have just come to Korea to attend Yonsei University.
And I can guarantee that driving in India is terrifying. Korean roads are the safest roads i've ever been on ^ ^
Wow how did u find India? Apart from the terrible driving 😅
kkk it was actually pretty fun living there!
+King Kyong Isn't hard to be in Yonsei University?
I've wanted to go to S-Korea for some time, would love to go there sometime soon. Keep up the good work, love your vids! :)
You should try driving in India 😂
Amitha Alex do you want them to die? XD because there is no way they are surviving a drive in india
lol
+Amitha Alex India's drivers drive chaotic but, oddly enough, we felt safe even though we almost died and one of us got grazed by a car's mirror.
I feel like if we can survive driving in India, we can survive any situation 😂😂😂
Mind Palace! Was I the only one who thought of Sherlock right there? :D
I SEARCHED for a comment like this xD
Martina,I love your pink brows!
Driving in Thailand is also brutal
Thank god Im from Hk
you are still chinese dumbass. It is really stupid that Hong Kongers think they are non chinese.
I know Im still chinese but the air quality aint as bad in Hk
and please dont be rude
Meme Ching
Oh has it gotten better.
The main thing i find annoying about the HK is the humidity but i guess that applies to most of china.
as a chinese, i say come to shanghai, it's different than beijing
the air isn't that bad in sh
I didn't really know about how bad China's airwas until I met a student from China in my uni and we were talking over dinner and she said one thing she loves about America is how clean the air is. Hearing your guys and her experience makes me so grateful for the clean air in the US at least where I am o;
Anyone else pause the vid at 5:48 to admire?... or am I just being weird loll
*raises hand* Yes, am I guilty of this crime. And I found out I know half of the people on the photos... which is kinda creepy.
I had a trip to india in December and OMG my mum cried 😂
When I was younger in China I could rarely see the blue sky in China.
Bolun Zhang clearly not young enough
It's not normal or anything, but it's not abnormal either if that makes sense.
it was an interesting video and it's just your opinion and experience, but i wanna comment on the smog thing, because i've lived in beijing for a whole year and i don't share your experience. i never had any pain from the air and i didn't even wear a mask. i only wore a mask during winter time, because that's when the pollution gets really REALLY bad, also because of all the coal heating. i think you exaggerated a bit with the whole dramatical music, that kind of got on my nerves, because it will make people think, beijing is /always/ polluted and everyone will get pain from just walking down the street. i know the pollution got worse again, but in general it's something you can deal with. i had no problem and it's not like beijing is ALWAYS polluted. the sky is super beautifully blue after a rainy day/night. so it'll be just sad if people decide not to travel to beijing just bc of the air. well. just my opinion.
i think the trophy of worst driving goes to.... Vietnam! :D
(at least, in my experience, and i love the country)
Really @.@ i don't find it that bad compare to what Simon and Martina said about others countries. And i live in Hanoi, that pretty much the worst place to drive
lol, the traffic is great. u just cross the road and the motorbikes magically evade u.
In the Philippines, there are a lot of nipples and bellies.
I totally spotted the ActRaiser II music, Good choice of background tune!
I live in London and on the few days of the year that we get to remind ourselves of what the sun looks and feels like, its pretty common to see men walking down the street without shirts. I have to say that it does become less common in central London though.
HE LOOKS SO DIFFERENT W/OUT A BEARD
I am korean and I wanna visit china someday. There is a big rumor in korea that chinese man are so nice to their family. Is it real? I think chinese man are attractive too like exomXD
poortaiwanese ohh, taiwannese is here
And I've only seen (fit) shirtless men exercising, outside...Never just hanging it all out.

Ooooo same and I'm in Michigan
Ahahaha exercising men twinsies
Pink eyebrows? You go Martina!!💕💕💕👏💁
