Hmm. I think we might have been misinterpreted at the part on monolids. We weren't saying that ALL Asian people have monolids. We were trying to explain what double eyelid surgery is about, and we had to explain how monolids is what people are trying to fix, though we don't actually perceive the issue ourselves. Sorry if it came across otherwise!
That's true, I'm japanese, live in Brazil, and I have "monolids" but my sister doesn't, the other part is also true, my friends didn't notice my "monolids" until I pointed that out. Love you guys >.< you're so adorable. Cheers from both Brazil and Japan
I would say monolids is an asian thing as I'm yet to see a non-asian with monolids, but of course there are people with natural double eyelids. Just another fun fact of the day.. there's also two types of double eyelids - Open-cut and close-cut. forums.soompi.com/discussion/168486/open-close-cut-eyes-double-lidded-eyes Here's a gif with all the recent Miss Korea contestant. imgur.com/0MMzzLQ Definitely not hating as it's everyone's personal choice but it is rather interesting!
taniiah wow thats really interesting. didnt realise there were actually terms for different double eyelids. i have one single eyelid and one double eyelid. My eye thats double eyelid is both open and closed - but usually stays in closed mode. sometimes though wheni wake up my eye will become an open one but with a secondary crease where it should close - but will close during the day or when i wake up the next day. sometimes it stays open for weeks though lol
When I went to Korea this Summer, I was contemplating Double Eyelid Surgery. However, at the end of the day, I decided I didn't want to change my face~
everytime i look at the mirror and say ah i don't like this and that but when i really try to imagine myself without my figures i am like what on earth are you thinking adriana snap out of it, i like my beauty spots no one has them expect me!!! hahahahahahahaahhahah i like this and that
hehetheeheehehe for me when i see a person i don't find the person ugly i only think someone is ugly when they are wearing horrible clothe, makeup overly done or when they smoke cigarettes that there teeth becomes black and when i a person attitude is of an evil ass and that's it, all my friends has there own beautyness. :D
Every race has something that they think is ugly on themselves, but people on the outside think the exact opposite. I'm black and there are stigmas about our whole entire appearance, especially our hair... we think that we have bad hair and other people have good hair, because straight hair is good hair... it's a mess. Finally people are starting to realize that we are beautiful the way we are, slowly and surely!!! Your eyes are awesome!!!! Don't ever change them!!!
WORD EDUCATION FUNTIME CORNER The "plastic" in "plastic surgery" comes from a time when the word meant the same thing as the Korean translation: "reshaping", "sculpting", "malleable", "molding". Plastic surgery has little to do with plastic the material (in case you're wondering, silicone is not a plastic). Plastic the material was so named because it had these properties, but then became so ubiquitous that it supplanted the original meaning. Compare: "neuroplasticity", "plastic arts" (sculpture), "phenotypic plasticity"
To expand on your definition: plas/o is a combining form for development or formation. The suffix -tic means "pertaining to". So, plastic literally means "pertaining to formation" or "pertaining to development" -the more you know rainbow -
That was super fun to know though, it's like... I knew it, but I never really kept it in mind, ever. :D In my native language we have this word "plastical" which means something along the lines of elastic, you know, it describes something that has those qualities. "Plasteline" lol is the word for this substanse kids play with to sculpture their own creations and has nothing to do with plastic the material.
My eyelids have a mind of their own. They can fold up to four times, so instead of double eyelids I sometimes have mini quadruple eyelids, while other times I have mono eyelids. They are out of my control. LOL
Seeing how the two of you seem so completely in love with each other makes me like you guys and makes me believe and true love.. When i think of true love now i dont think about the romeo and juliet type.. I think about your kinda love..
I've often said Korean women look alike, especially in K pop groups and what not, and people would get annoyed by that. Now I've come to find out they literally TRY to look alike and I was right!
Well I'm Korean (Korean-American technically), but I honestly don't disagree with surgery, it's more like I don't want to get it done. Honestly if I'm ugly, so be it, but I don't want to change myself just so I can look more 'attractive'. People can get plastic surgery done, I'm just not going to do it. Anyways I live in the US, so who cares,
I had no idea Minzy from 2NE1 had a nose job. She still looks good :) Asian people are not shy about telling people to get plastic surgery. When I was in Vietnam, I had a few people told me to get rid of my mole. LOL…
really? it was really obvious to me...with this new comeback she also came with a new nose. i honestly think her real nose was really cute..but..it's her's so....
tigerlilie2289 I think I remember hearing that she did it because she had surgery on her nose and that left it crooked? But, either way, im glad she admitted it :)
I am Asian so I do understand why those are the popular surgery. And honestly, this video only proved that koreans cares a lot about their looks. Reformative surgery or plastic surgery. Whatever you call it means one thing, you change how you look. And if you aren't scarred from a fire, I don't see why you need one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The fact that koreans embrace plastic surgery or reformative surgery only goes to show that looks matters alot there and this is really dangerous. Because does that mean a person with talent is no longer considered for promotions in jobs just because they don't look good? You see why I have a problem with this. And the fact that there are people who look alike due to having the same sort of plastic surgery only scares me more. Why? Go read Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. By looking alike, we are getting rid of our individuality and is that what you want? In a way, this does not help me think of Korea in a better light.
I'm mexican american, and as much as I'm interested in korean culture, I've got to say that this is among the most negative aspects of korea. No matter where you go, people are gonna care about how they look. It is part of being human. However, it seems that Korea and other Asian cultures really take that to the next level. In my opinion, I think it is okay to tweak some parts with plastic surgery as long as it it doesn't completely change your appearance. Like you said, if we all start to look alike as a result of plastic surgery we will abandon the unique person we once were. It should be illegal in Korea to base potentially hiring someone or not on because of their looks and leaving their qualifications and skills aside. It is a clear violation of human rights and should be banned. I believe one of the main reasons why plastic surgery is so common in korea is because of the conformity they have when it comes to what is beautiful. Instead of learning to accept other types of beauties like we generally do in america they stick to certain characteristics of what they must aspire to in order to be beautiful. Things are changing, slowly, but still changing and korea is becoming more aware of other cultures so who knows maybe one day plastic surgery won't be so common anymore.
I wouldn't say that other Asian cultures are intense about plastic surgery like South Korea. I am an Asian living in Asia and as much as there are people who do plastic surgery, there are people who don't. And being hired does not come from your looks but instead your credentials. adriana12995 I agree that South Korea should make it illegal for people to get hired because of their looks because it's totally unkind. I do agree that Asians have a standard of beauty such as clear fair porcelain skin, double eyelids and the list goes on. But despite that standards, you don't see other Asian countries going insane with plastic surgery. So I don't think it's the standard alone. There must also be other factors that contribute to this insane plastic surgery culture. I hope you are right though. I hope things are changing in South Korea and that plastic surgery won't be so common there anymore. I hope that for the South Koreans sake.
carmen s Being hired does come from your credentials but like they mentioned in this video, if a company is considering hiring two people, who have the same qualifications, they will most likely choose the one with better looks. Looks alone won't get you a job but when it comes to an employer's decision, it seems that a more attractive person will be chosen over someone who has the exact credentials but is not as good looking. I also do think the're are others factors that contribute to Korea's obsession with plastic surgery like the media and idol's beauty. But really I believe the main reason is in fact their beauty standards. In most of Asia, and in many other parts of the world, fair skin, and big eyes are commonly known as features that one must have to be considered beautiful. However, in the rest of the world, aside from big eyes and fair skin, what is considered pretty is objective. Correct me on this if I'm wrong but I can't think of any other country that is as specific as Korea when it comes to what is beautiful. In korea you must have big eyes, double eyelids, fair skin, V-line jaw, small face, tall nose, small lips, long legs, very skinny body with S lines and X lines (which in my opinion don't look like curves at all) and a youthful complexion. Because of this unrealistic ideals that most celebrities have is why many look for plastic surgery. Sure there might be deeper reasons for this obsession but those standards are what contribute to it the most.
adriana12995 well it's just kinda sad to me that to differentiate yourself or to really secure a job, you need to get plastic surgery. Ummm....I think I disagree. The standards that South Korea have for beauty is something all Asians hold as standard as well. So, it's not just South Korea that is specific with what is beauty. In fact, the whole Asian community is.
Before I went to study in Japan I never noticed that monolids were a thing people cared about till I saw commercials for the surgery and eyelid tapes and makeup specifically to obtain double eyelids. And here I am being jealous of monolids for how smoothly eye makeup goes on and how well it accentuates your eyeballs x.x I put eyeshadow on and you never know cause it all just folds back to my skull! xD
I read this article about a story from Asia, maybe China, where the woman had plastic surgery and married a guy but all their kids turned out extremely ugly and the husband sued his wife because she lied to him.
I honestly have no problem with people getting plastic surgery because its totally their choice if they want to enhance/fix something. But sometimes, It just creeps me out how far someone goes to look like someone or like a whole different person :/
i feel like the surgeon has got really no right to disagree. its not his business. if the person does have issues it is not the surgeons problem, he could recommend a psyciatrist(too lazy to check how its written u feel me) but that could sound somewhat offensive. also if a person genuenly doesn't like what they see in the mirror and cant accept it why not change it completely? if they're not happy with it should they live an unhappy life because of a trivial thing like looks? also some (valerie lukyanova etc) i think look like walking pieces of art its amazing to have the guts to do something that permanent and extreme to yourself. do they do it in the heat of the moment, no. can they still change it if they dont like it, yes.
lxItsLauraxI Surgeons in Korea sometimes egg their patients on though, saying, "Yeah, you would be prettier if you got that procedure done." Or if a patient wants to get a procedure because they think it'll make their boyfriends happy, surgeon's will happily do it for them. In America, surgeons would refuse.
yea i understood that everyone does that there. which is fucked up if you ask me. but im afraid they're all so brainwashed that that is not gonna change in any time soon.
What i find really strange is that (as stated in the video) a shit ton of people in SK get a lot of work done on themselves, and it is so advertised, but then when KPop idols get work done (especially females) they get hated on by the fans and get called fake. Does anyone know why this is, it's so weird its very widely advertised but once a famous person gets surgery it's the end of the world lol
Good question! Maybe it's because idols are supposed to be perfect? Like, naturally perfect? Idk enough about Korean culture to say for sure, but this seems to be a good explanation due to the pressure that idols already get.
I can't say for sure, but I think that Nasuka Star is right about idols are seen as being perfect thing (supposedly). After all, they are supposed to be *idolized by people, so I think that they are criticized because their audiences may be in the mindset of, "this person is so much prettier and better so I should look up to them... wait, they're actually average and just got surgery?!" Once that kicks in, it's almost like the idol loses some of what make the special. They are no longer thought of as a heavenly-anomaly, but more of just a person who invested their wallet in their faces. I can see why they would though. Pressure from the media and public seems horrifically suffocating.
Interesting question... I think in the end, people all still wish to be "natural beauties" and even though plastic surgery is widely known and accepted, people still PREFER the natural route. And I agree with NasukaStar that people expect celebrities to be perfect and not have to get anything done. If they got something done like everyone else, then it makes them seem like real people, God forbid. lol.
Honestly, I think it's mostly foreign kpop fans that make a fuss over idols getting surgery. They are supposed to be idols and North Americans especially are easily offended by the actions of people they perceive as role models.
I'm African American and when I first found out about the eyelid surgery I was shocked. Its funny how the grass is always greener on the other side. I think that Asian eye shapes are beautiful! =)
Oh how the times have changed. My grandfather is half white and half Chinese. Throughout his life, he was shunned by his community for not looking like the typical Asian. When the Communist party won control in China, he moved to Vietnam where the same thing happened. Nobody in Vietnam, except one family, would give my grandfather an opportunity to work or buy things from them. When the communist invaded Vietnam, my grandfather and my father moved to South Korea for a better life. Although they weren't as shunned or looked down upon, they were still picked on for their tall nose, green eyes, slim face, double eyelid, and other things that made them an anomaly. My father looks like a paler, taller, and more European version of Lee Min Ho, but always got beaten/picked on by the home room teacher for petty things back in the 80s. It wasn't until they moved to America while my dad was still in High School that these notions started to change. The features which my family was looked down upon for are now considered beautiful. I'm just amazed how drastic things have become in just a couple of decades. As for what EYK said, I can see how some people have plastic surgery in Korea to increase their chances of getting jobs. Getting jobs in Korea is very competitive. If you're looking for a midrange to high tier job, most companies look at appearances too. My dad was able to pay through college by modeling for Calvin Klein before becoming an accountant. He would probably get a job over an average looking person in South Korea even if they are a little bit more qualified. I don't mean any harm from that statement. That's just how it works. I will never know how they feel because I was blessed with the features that Koreans will consider beautiful, but I understand where they're coming from. If getting Plastic Surgery allows Koreans to stay competitive in the work place and be happy with themselves, then why not?
***** Yay! Chinese and double eyelids connection haha. Not many people realize how low girls' in South Korea self esteem are. It's normal for girls to feel inadequate, but not many people know how extreme it really is. In the U.S. the general message is to love yourself for who you are (If you're kind at least). Although not as drastic now, in South Korea, if you don't fit the ideal image, people will straight up call you ugly or tell you to improve yourself (tends to be directed to girls). They don't mean any offense, but that was the society they were raised in. Things are improving though. Hopefully in a couple of years, appearance won't dictate the work field as much as qualification.
this just shows that there is a flaw with the society itself and what they believe in. If looks is what gets you a job and not because of what your qualification is, then, it is sad indeed. I don't blame the koreans getting the surgery to make them stay competitive in the work place. I blame the society for telling them that they have to.
It's mostly Koreans and Japanese that have monolids. Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnemese, etc. Most of the time have big eyes and creases. I myself am 75% Vietnamese and 25% Chinese and have creased eyelids. I personally find it cute that Korean have monolids, especially when they smile. ^.^
eyelids are not really important thing at all. it's eyeball itself. human eyes are basically eyeballs. most people forget this simple fact that all kinds of races/ethnicities are different from head to toe. it's not just skin color. everything is different. koreans have korean eyeballs that are clearly different from other asians. let's be honest. most northeast asians are not really attracted to southeast asians. people think that's because of skin color. no it's wrong. it's because of eyeballs. ne asians are not attracted to tropical beauty. it's not about being good looking. it's all about being attractive. don't forget beauty is very subjective thing.
I have really weird eye lids. My parents are both chinese. My mom "got one of here eyes done" and my father has mono lids. My left eye is a double eyelid, but my right eye is one day mono and the other day double. Apparently that's the reason my mom got it too :) .
I've actually had one monolid that kept changing and I honestly thought it made me look really weird so that's why I started using double eyelid glue to fix that monolid :p
The one thing I don't like about Korean culture is what you said, that they're not afraid to criticize your looks. I'm satisfied with my body, I like it. But in Korean culture, I would be considered fat, with a dent in my nose bridge, wearing glasses, having moles on my face... And it sounds like people wouldn't shy away from criticizing my every minor flaw. That can't be good for your self-esteem.
But it is also not good to dismiss people who have legitimate concerns about their looks with the “everyone is beautiful” BS. It erases the fact that pretty privilege exists and those who don’t have it can suffer greatly on a personal and societal level. It is not anyone’s fault for being uncomfortable in their own skin, none of us choose our bodies or faces so we should be allowed to criticize them and change them. The problem is that plastic surgery is not perfect and it cannot fix everything, it is expensive, sometimes things can go wrong or just look strange and patients with poor results can be treated very poorly by everyone around them and by their surgeons. If you are satisfied with your looks then the criticism should not bother you, I would think it would only become bothersome if you agreed with it or if it was relentless.
My daughter tried to explain and show me the difference between mono-lids and double-lids but I still have a really hard time to see any difference. I just think Asian eyes are so beautiful!
Double eyelid surgery is less invasive and much, much quicker than having a metal contraption placed on your mouth for six months to straighten your teeth. But you wouldn't think anything weird at people getting braces.
they won't be able to say: "the baby looks like you!" "No, he/she has your nose! your eyes!" here, when a baby born the first thing we do is to compare to their parents... that would be a sad part
I remember when I was in Korea, i talked about plastic surgery with my host sister and i was telling her that i really like the monolid look but she told me that for her graduation she was going to get the double eyelid surgery. I wish she would stay with her monolid because she is beautiful !! But whatever makes her happy :)
What's weird is that when the other countries in the world look at S. Korean men and women, they see them all as handsome and beautiful. I saw a documentary on this PS thing, and all I kept thinking was "Why did this guy/that girl get plastic surgery? They already look nice"...now I know why. :c Honestly, I actually can't believe that they ask for a photo on your resume and that they have the choice to pick between someone who is good-looking with no experience rather than to pick someone who isn't good-looking (in their view) but has a lot of job experiences. Faith in humanity...lost.
Attaching your picture to a resumé is normal in Germany, too. I never knew you didn't do that in North America until you two talked about it (not in this video, but I can't quite remember which one it was). It's usually just trying to look your best/most professional/friendly though, not necessarily going from one studio to another to get the best picture.
It's kinda sad actually, it's only after so many of them have done plastic surgery you start wondering how cute they'd look if they had those initial differences...I kinda miss their mono eyelids now...
I think that Asians (especially Koreans) should love themselves more cause i think monolids are actually really cute. I've always like seeing monolids.
TL;DR Sooo, Hey Simon and Martina. I've been reading this all over the internet but apparently Jonghyun from Shinee is supporting the LGBT community in South Korea. But he is getting a lot of backlash for it. I was wondering if you could talk more about the LGBT rights in South Korea and what's going on with college students protesting there. Thanks! :)
This is ONE of the reasons I tend to prefer boy groups over most girl groups. Even though members of male groups may also have had some form of surgery, because men have a wider variety of looks that can be considered good-looking, you can have groups like BAP, Super Junior, SHINee, Infinite, EXO, 2PM, C-Clown, BTOB, B2ST, or U-Kiss, where everybody has a different look, but are all still considered attractive. Because what is supposed to be attractive on women in South Korea is rather narrow and restricted, it tends to be that same look, time after weary time.
One thing I have loved about boy bands is that a lot of them don't get double eyelid surgery! Yes, some girls keep their mono-lids too! It's natural and honestly I like the way it looks. I prefer a Korean guy who doesn't have double eyelids, it's more attractive in my opinion :D
That's how I feel. I really think the monolid is extremely attractive. There are some girl groups I like, and those tend to be the ones I think look the most diverse like, Brown-Eyed Girls, Miss A, and F(X), Secret, Sistar and I like Wonder Girls because of their more active dancing. I must admit to not being familiar with the names of all the members in the last three groups, though! Also, I want to find out more about GI (Global Icon). They seem pretty cool. At least they've got short hair! That is a welcome change! I think short hair looks more interesting than the typical boring, similarly-styled long hair.
not all koreans that have double eyelids have had plastic surgery. It is natural for some koreans. It's just sad that when foreigners see double eyelids on koreans it's automatically assumed that the person had plastic surgery.
I don't assume that. In some pre-debut pictures, some people look pretty much the same and it's obvious they haven't had anything done. I just don't see why some East Asians seem to think that a monolid is unattractive, or even ugly, especially on women. And I've watched enough idols - Kim SungGyu for example - get ridiculed on shows for having "small eyes" to know that some people don't like that look very much. But, like I said, men tend to be able to have a great variety of looks that are still thought of as handsome, while women seem to be far more restricted by the idea of what female beauty is supposed to look like.
Well it's a cultural thing like big boobs are found attractive by men in western countries big eyes are seen as attractive in korean culture. And the reason why you see girls that have double eyelids and men rarely do is because in korea double eyelids are seen as a feminine feature. I mean its ok for guys to have double eyelids but they think it doesn't look "masculine" at least for koreans.
Eat Your Kimchi In Germany it's the same when it comes to VCs. It has something to do with how much care did the person put into the resume, is the photo good (did they went to a photostudio instead of a booth ) did they were appropriate clothes to be taken serious. Since many companies that I work with get so many applications that are equally good for example, the photo shows that extra bit of care that you put in and that you want the job and sometimes if you look sympathetic, like are you a person who looks positiv, that other people will want to work with you. It used to be standard and you had to do it but nowadays you can kip the photo if you don't like. But it might lower your chances to get the job. It's all about being noticable in a big stack of applications. This goes for the whole presentation of your resume, not just your CV (How is the cover letter written, what kind of folder did the person use etc.)
+Simon and Martina qMy friends have been hating Kpop because the idols have had plastic surgery. I have tried telling them that Korea's society is different from us ( North America too🙂 ) but they don't understand and they feel that Kpop is influencing people to have plastic surgery. Please tell me what to do and how to handle his situation the do not understand how Korean society works. On a side note can you please do a video on Korean/ Kpop society, it would really help when I show it to my friends. Thanks, your videos always makes me happy and I really like you guys💕
All the people getting offended by this video are probably the people who got plastic surgery >.> I mean there's nothing wrong with getting plastic surgery, but I wish these people would accept who they are and be happy with their natural looks.
This topic kind of reminds me of the "Uglies" book series by the author Scott Westerfeld. Where a future society at age 16 have plastic surgery to become more aesthetically pleasing and externally beautiful. This makes a world free of conflict(because everyone is the same), but in the process people lose what makes them unique, interesting, and externally beauty becomes what most people care about. Also in the series pre-surgery people are referred as "Uglies" and post-surgery people the referred as "Pretties".
I completely thought of that when I watched this video too! I'm almost finishing the first book, and will read the 2nd one soon. The friend who recommended them told me she didnt read the 4th one because it wasnt the same main characters. If you already read it, what do you think about it? ^^ (the 4th book)
Tati タティ yes, I have read the fourth book. they do change the main characters, but it's still an OK book. it does have more anime influences. But don't worry, the main characters from the prior books return as side characters. but the plot focuses more on popularity rather than beauty. but I still recommend it, even if you only want to know what happens to the original main characters when they get older.
In Korea, is there any racism towards Americans or any other ethnicity that is not Asian? Also, are there any non-Asian people in K-pop, and if so, do they get discriminated against? Thanks!
Can you please talk about what it is like to be a student in an Asian high or elementary school? And some of your experiences about having Asian students that have surprised, shocked, delighted or even made you think: "What did the parents do to make this child like this?"? Thx!
Eyelids, dang it guys. Some people have two double, some have two mono, some have one double and one mono, some have double in the morning and mono at night. Some have mono when they were young and naturally get double when they are grown up, some people paint glue on their mono to make double, some do surgery.
I love how you used idols from 2 top groups!!!! Lol the picture of bunch of women together looking alike kinda remind me of Secret, they all look alike now
When it comes to the "what happens when they have a love baby?" there was a chinese couple where the guy was hot (I don't think he had surgery) and the wife was too and their kids didn't look like the product of such beautiful people. The husband assumed she cheated on him but then the wife caved and told him she got $100, 000 worth of plastic surgery in South Korea. Awkwaaard!
I'm an Asian and I have double eyelids, and I have big nose, too. :D Why do you people want make yourself a twin to another?? We don't even know how differenciate you with the other ones. How creepy it is. Simon, yeap! It's so damn freaky!! No matter how they called it, it's still a plastic surgecy to me.
Me? Middle Estern? U're kidding, right? Asia not only consist of Japan, China, Vietnam, Korea or Arab like you said. There are lots of tropical country like mine, Vietnam is one of them. Know Bali? That's in my country, Indonesia. If Korea have Jeju Island, we have Bali. Sorry, IMO you should about Asia more, bro.
Julie Arif People from Vietnam and Indonesia look like Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, they're Mongoloids. East Asians tend to look like alike, just like Black Africans and White Europeans.
***** =D You have come to Vietnam and Indonesia to prove it. Mostly people in tropical country like mine and Vietnam doesn't have fair skin like Chinese, Japanese or Korean have. We tend to have darker skin, yellow undertone. Like Malaysians, Cambodians, etc. I don't say all of us but mostly. Thai people on the other hand have fair skin, even though not all of them because Thailand also known for plastic surgery, that's what I know for all this years. For other Thai fellas, forgive me if I'm wrong.
Julie Arif I am well aware that skin color is different depending on which country you are in Asia, but the facial structure of your faces is not so different, the only Mongoloids who look different than east Asians are native Americans which I have ancestry from ( and Spanish, I am Mexican after all), and I can't go to your country, because I do not have the money to go, I can watch documentaries about your country, but that's about it.
To answer Simon's question about the swamp donkey, a dude (I think in China but I could be wrong) married this beautiful woman who was once "ugly", and ended up having swamp donkeys and he sued her.
Swamp Donkey Def: A very ugly, usually fat girl who hangs around in bars and clubs waiting to sexually assault males who are too drunk to defend themselves.
TL;DR Question: I've heard of some parents abandoning their babies in the streets of Seoul, does this happen often? Have you seen it before? Plus I've heard there are boxes in which people put their babies in there and then they are taken to an orphanage, have you seen these as well?
I hope CL would never get any plastic surgery no matter how much YG comment of how 'ugly' she is. Seriously, I don't think that she is ugly! I think she is lovable just the way she is.
I personally think plastic surgery is awful because idk, it makes me feel like I don't know the real them but anyways..... I wonder if any of these people who get this done wonder how will they look when they get older? It really is scary when you think about it because people are walking around literally with the same face, now that's creepy. It makes Korea seem like the Wal-Mart of plastic surgery.
The way I see plastic surgery has changed a lot since I got into kpop and more in particular Korean culture. I used to be totally against plastic surgery and hated the idea of anyone getting it and would absolutely never even ink of dating someone who's had plastic surgery but after looking into Korean culture and understanding the Korean mindset more I'm actually ok with it now !? I mean I'd never get it myself because I just do t feel the need to I'm perfectly fine the way I am and I would still rather people didn't get plastic surgery but if someone wants to get PS I'm fine with it now, it wouldn't bother me and I wouldn't choose not to date someone because they had plastic surgery. Basically it's up to them what they want to do with their bodies.
I think it's because uou're a kpop fan. And being against PS for a kpop fan is weird, itslike insult the singers because fans have to love what their fav do, all of it. Youre still agaisnt psbut bc your fav did it you conviced yourself that ps was ok
well i dunno if my fave did it or not but you're right that it's because of kpop, a lot of kpop idols get ps so i guess i kinda came to accept it more because of that like you said
+Ahn Laura what i said is that you're still against PS but you don't mind when its your fav. idk if it was a western singer you don't like you'll probably be like "uuuuh she's so fake !". western ppl have this same reaction with make up, so with PS...
Delian Jay no i actually don't care about people getting ps tbh it doesn't matter where they're from and if they're my biases or not, these people got plastic surgery for their own personal reasons and I respect that. Basically what other people do is up to them, if they want to get ps i don't care I just personally wouldn't choose to get any. I'm still not entirely open towards it and yes, I'm more accepting of my idols getting ps but i don't mind western celebs getting ps and I know plenty of them have had it anyway it's just a norm in the industry.
I've never really cared if someone got PS cause it's their body and I have no right to preach to them. (I mean, that's like people preaching to my about saying "your Septum piercing makes you look hideous!" Like it's still a form of body modification soooo.)
Not all Asians have monolids XD I'm Singaporean and I have double eyelids. A third one appears occasionally when I am sleep deprived lol. Now I know why I kept saying everyone looks the same whenever my friend shows me pictures of KPOP idols... Most of them have some form of plastic surgery :( Edit: Here in Singapore, it is actually kinda rare to find someone with monolids(well to me anyway). My brother has monolids and I don't know who he got it from since my whole family has double... Probably from my great grandparents.
But I really love the way you portayed this topic, and the way you portray every controversial topic in Korea. I love that you never resort to scorning Korean society or culture, and that you actually explain the cause and roots of the issue! Love you guys so much xx
The "plastic surgery monster" reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" where people were required to get plastic surgery and there were only a few number of faces people can choose from so everyone basically looked similar. It's really creepy seeing something similar happening in real life.
One of my Taiwanese acquaintance (living in Korea) was asked to take her relative visiting Korea to get the plastic surgery and she was also suprised to see that the most people waiting in the plastic surgery were all either Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese. www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-10-10/plastic-surgery-lifts-south-korean-tourism.
Hi Simon and Martina! How do people in Korea get such pale, white skin? I understand they have whitening creams for their face, but how about their overall skin colour? I noticed some Korean celebrities such as SNSD's Tiffany, Hyuna and Ailee previously had tan skin but now their skin is very pale. Their skin is even lighter than their group mates' who originally had whiter skin than them. Thank you :)
Hey Martina and Simon! Can you guys talk about half-asians in Korea? Do you know any in Korea and if so, how are they viewed/treated? I'm aware that there are half-asian models in Asia but do some Koreans try to look more like half-asians?
TL;DR How do people deal with allergies in South Korea? I have dust and pollen allergies as well as a dairy allergy (this only includes cow milk and products from the milk). I have to take medicine every morning for my airborne allergies, and I was wondering if you are able to obtain medicine for your allergies, or are able to bring your own stuff over, or if allergies over there are handled differently? I also know that you two went to a vegan restaurant, but is it difficult to deal with food allergies(such as a milk allergy) at a regular restaurant or store? Thanks!
Actually Asian eyelids can be monolid or double eyelid. Majority of Asians with double eyelids didn't have surgery. Also, Koreans do generally ask to have "a nose like that celebrity" etc so that's why they end up looking so similar.
LMFAO! Seriously. There are so many amazingly hilarious moments in this video that I don't even know where to begin. Simon's resume, for one xD So awesome...Go, Fart Sucker Mcgee! (By the way, I am pleased to have discovered that I am not the only person in the world who tacks 'Mcgee' onto nicknames. Though, I still don't know WHY I do it, personally....Ok, getting sidetracked...) Love how informative this video is and as always I appreciate the EYK perspective ^^ Personally, my opinions on plastic surgery have changed too since being exposed to Korean culture,
When you're about to sneeze say "PINEAPPLE" and it will go away. :) I whisper it, because I would look like a weirdo randomly saying pineapple in public xD
Creammellow wel moles not so much but beauty marks yes, i don't remember her name but the main actress of a recent drama has a beauty mark on her nose and people think it's really pretty(i don't tho) artists like g-dragon and iu drewn on fake beauty marks for a period of time when they where promoting songs.
I'm really shocked that apparently in the usa and kanada you don't have a foto of you in the résumé O.O I always thought this is totaly normal. In germany you do this when you apply for university/internship/jobs and you try to look good on it like when you're going to have an interview.. but I think people never would get the idea that they need plastic surgery just because they should put a foto on their application. And I don't think people get rated on their beauty but when you have piercing in your face, for example, you won't get a job where you represent your company...
Shoot Anonymous Yeah that's kinda the problem in Germany... honestly speaking I don't even know the official reason to why one should attach a photo to an application. But we all know it's because the employer can choose the person whos face he/she likes. >.> Allthough, to be fair, concern about this has been stated in public over the last few years and it's not a "must do" anymore but a "can do". With that said and despite the fact that a testrun by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency on how no photo on an application actually increases the chances for women and immigrants to be invited for an interview, it still is most of the time demanded and won't change within the next few years.
I taught at a girls high school for 3 years in Korea. They used to put banners right outside the school saying, "Bring your friend and get your eye surgery for 50% off." It "somehow" managed to fall down every time I walked by it. There were 900 girls at that school and roughly 90% got some form of surgery done before they graduated.
Have you guys heard about yoona from SNSD dating Lee Seung Gi? As a fan of SNSD I am really happy for them both. What are your opinions on this and how do you think the fans are going to react? Do you think this will turn out the same way that Jonghyun from shinee's relationship did? Thanks!!
there was a "swamp doggy " before. a woman got plastic surgery and then scored a naturally handsome guy. after they got married and had a couple kids, it looked nothing like the married couple. the woman finally mentioned that she got plastic surgery and the man was so mad, he sued her. idk how it turned out.
pfffttt I don't consider mole removal as plastic surgery. Same as hair removal. How did you get the mole removal done? Just put a paste and it will fall off by itself after a few days right?
Why is it when people say 'Asian', they always think monolid people. Southeast and Southern Asians exist too you know. And most of us have double eyelid.
Cheers from both Brazil and Japan
iv'e searched on some of my idols and drama boyfriends "before and after" plastic, and some of them made me loose my jaw :p
I would say monolids is an asian thing as I'm yet to see a non-asian with monolids, but of course there are people with natural double eyelids. Just another fun fact of the day.. there's also two types of double eyelids - Open-cut and close-cut. forums.soompi.com/discussion/168486/open-close-cut-eyes-double-lidded-eyes
Here's a gif with all the recent Miss Korea contestant. imgur.com/0MMzzLQ Definitely not hating as it's everyone's personal choice but it is rather interesting!
scary thing is that Koreans see double eyelid surgery as a treatment just like a spa, they don't see that as a surgery!
taniiah wow thats really interesting. didnt realise there were actually terms for different double eyelids. i have one single eyelid and one double eyelid.
You ugly mate. Why didn't you do it?
Every race has something that they think is ugly on themselves, but people on the outside think the exact opposite. I'm black and there are stigmas about our whole entire appearance, especially our hair... we think that we have bad hair and other people have good hair, because straight hair is good hair... it's a mess. Finally people are starting to realize that we are beautiful the way we are, slowly and surely!!! Your eyes are awesome!!!! Don't ever change them!!!
Good. You are beautiful! Love your videos!
WORD EDUCATION FUNTIME CORNER
The "plastic" in "plastic surgery" comes from a time when the word meant the same thing as the Korean translation: "reshaping", "sculpting", "malleable", "molding".
Thanks for the mini-lesson! I didn't know that :-)
kitty katz
To expand on your definition: plas/o is a combining form for development or formation. The suffix -tic means "pertaining to". So, plastic literally means "pertaining to formation" or "pertaining to development"
-the more you know rainbow -
That was super fun to know though, it's like...
LOL
Same here. I have hidden double eyelids.
wow. OTL
Haha, that's the same for me. Sometimes I have double eyelids(both eyes) and sometimes triple eyelids(left eye)
SAME it annoys me soo freakin much =^=
l
But, either way, im glad she admitted it :)
tigerlilie2289 I'm terrible at noticing things like that :D
she got it done pretty recently lol
She got surgery because of medical reasons. But since she was already getting surgery, she decided to get her nose done
I hope that for the South Koreans sake.
.
carmen s Being hired does come from your credentials but like they mentioned in this video, if a company is considering hiring two people, who have the same qualifications, they will most likely choose the one with better looks.
And here I am being jealous of monolids for how smoothly eye makeup goes on and how well it accentuates your eyeballs x.x I put eyeshadow on and you never know cause it all just folds back to my skull! xD
I know! Monolids are cute :)
I read this article about a story from Asia, maybe China, where the woman had plastic surgery and married a guy but all their kids turned out extremely ugly and the husband sued his wife because she lied to him.
yeah and he won that law suit!!
I honestly have no problem with people getting plastic surgery because its totally their choice if they want to enhance/fix something. But sometimes, It just creeps me out how far someone goes to look like someone or like a whole different person :/
I think when people take it that far they must have some issues. Surgeons should not agree to it!
i feel like the surgeon has got really no right to disagree. its not his business. if the person does have issues it is not the surgeons problem, he could recommend a psyciatrist(too lazy to check how its written u feel me) but that could sound somewhat offensive. also if a person genuenly doesn't like what they see in the mirror and cant accept it why not change it completely? if they're not happy with it should they live an unhappy life because of a trivial thing like looks? also some (valerie lukyanova etc) i think look like walking pieces of art its amazing to have the guts to do something that permanent and extreme to yourself. do they do it in the heat of the moment, no. can they still change it if they dont like it, yes.
lxItsLauraxI Surgeons in Korea sometimes egg their patients on though, saying, "Yeah, you would be prettier if you got that procedure done." Or if a patient wants to get a procedure because they think it'll make their boyfriends happy, surgeon's will happily do it for them. In America, surgeons would refuse.
yea i understood that everyone does that there. which is fucked up if you ask me. but im afraid they're all so brainwashed that that is not gonna change in any time soon.
Just casually binging your whole damn channel because I just found your channel and just love you two!!!
That's awesome! Welcome to our channel!
Yes! This is so me a year later!
"Simon can stick his entire thumb up his nose." Pics or it didn't happen.
Tessa Seward Maybe but i have a couple of Korean friends that react that way too. Its weird lol
Very interesting and thorough comment. Lots to think about.
this just shows that there is a flaw with the society itself and what they believe in.
I see a lot of Chinese monolids, not just Koreans and Japanese.
***** It's funny because I'm half Vietnamese and half Chinese and I was born having one being a double eyelid and the other eye being monolid :p
eyelids are not really important thing at all. it's eyeball itself. human eyes are basically eyeballs.
most people forget this simple fact that all kinds of races/ethnicities are different from head to toe.
it's not just skin color. everything is different. koreans have korean eyeballs that are clearly different from other asians.
let's be honest. most northeast asians are not really attracted to southeast asians. people think that's because of skin color.
no it's wrong. it's because of eyeballs. ne asians are not attracted to tropical beauty.
it's not about being good looking. it's all about being attractive. don't forget beauty is very subjective thing.
Subtitles now available in English, if you want em :D
Long live the "nasty" fans!
Thanks again ^^
I like this video! Very informative
***** Glad you liked it :D
Eat Your Kimchi I love any video you guys make, even if it ruins the idea of Mandu for me :D
Some asians naturally have double eye lids, so no it's not an Asian thing only to have monolids. Heck, white people can have them too sometimes.
Yep, my ginger friend has more mono looking lids and I see a ton of black woman with them. I think it's so pretty.
true to that! I'm asian and naturally have double eye lids.
My daughter tried to explain and show me the difference between mono-lids and double-lids but I still have a really hard time to see any difference. I just think Asian eyes are so beautiful!
I find the notion of plastic surgery kinda frightening. I mean, someone's cutting into and changing you. It gives me shivers. Ugh.
I absolutely agree
me too
Good excuse to be childless by choice if you get plastic surgery 😂
sucks watching this in 360p
why's there no 720p? :c
who care LOL we're here for the discussion not some facy graphics.
Yea it would've been nice to see the surgery pix in HD. I can't tell the diff b/w Minzy's nose. Maybe that's why?
I remember when I was in Korea, i talked about plastic surgery with my host sister and i was telling her that i really like the monolid look but she told me that for her graduation she was going to get the double eyelid surgery. I wish she would stay with her monolid because she is beautiful !! But whatever makes her happy :)
What's weird is that when the other countries in the world look at S. Korean men and women, they see them all as handsome and beautiful. I saw a documentary on this PS thing, and all I kept thinking was "Why did this guy/that girl get plastic surgery? They already look nice"...now I know why. :c
Honestly, I actually can't believe that they ask for a photo on your resume and that they have the choice to pick between someone who is good-looking with no experience rather than to pick someone who isn't good-looking (in their view) but has a lot of job experiences.
Faith in humanity...lost.
i know, right?
may i just say, you guys are freaking amazing! i love your videos. they're so funny, informative, and great. please keep up the awesomeness. (^_^)
Unproductive Incorporated Thank you!
The only plastic surgery that I would get is mole removal.
Same
+Perry the platypus I would get a dick extension.
Same
+Perry the platypus Well yeah that's for health reason not cosmetic reason
Depends on the type of removal you get. My last mole was removed by surgical excision. (Cut out with a scalpel)
French subtitles now up as well! Thank you very much for making them!
Merci! 😋
merci
merci ! :-D
Merci ! :D
thanks! (Totally in French words)
Lovely! Danish subtitles are now up as well! Thank you to whoever made them, you beautiful person :D
(2:29) "It sounds like it's more like, 'I'm a BUTTERFLY & I'm going to transform into a COCOON."
--isn't it the OTHER WAY AROUND?
It's kinda sad actually, it's only after so many of them have done plastic surgery you start wondering how cute they'd look if they had those initial differences...I kinda miss their mono eyelids now...
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING UP MINZY ABOUT THE NOSE JOB BECAUSE THAT "FAT LOSS" PRESS NONSENSE WAS BS hahaha
Why can't you drink the water in Korea? Have you ever tried it and can it make you sick if you drink it?
Ooh! Arabic subs up as well, thanks to @Fatima S!
hey me too
The plastic in "plastic" surgery means capable of being shaped or formed. It doesn't refer to plastics compounds.
But it still has a negative connotation because plastic also has the other meaning, of being unnatural and fake.
Yes, well that's just how words change over time. Plastic surgery predated plastic compounds by around 50 years.
Actually in Poland you have to add your picture when you apply for job too,so it's not only Korean thing
Hungarian subs now up, thanks to @Judit L!
dear simon and martina :) can you guys make a tl;dr of skin tones in korea. do guys prefer only pale skin girls? i mean things like that
I think that Asians (especially Koreans) should love themselves more cause i think monolids are actually really cute. I've always like seeing monolids.
TL;DR
Sooo, Hey Simon and Martina.
I've been reading this all over the internet but apparently Jonghyun from Shinee is supporting the LGBT community in South Korea.
But he is getting a lot of backlash for it.
I was wondering if you could talk more about the LGBT rights in South Korea and what's going on with college students protesting there.
Thanks! :)
I love monolids. Out of curiosity, is there monolid surgery? To go from double to not?
From the wise words of Xander:
"I would choose a natural girl because I don't want to have a baby that is so different from the mum." lol
Romanian subs now up!
Yeeeeeeeeh :-* love u guys!
Eat Your Kimchi Romanian??? Wow I'm so surprised

YAY WTF Simon in Japanese Fake Boobs! .... soda out my nose ... thanks Simon!
LOL "Essence Releaser~" XD
Xiao?! O:
XIAAAAAAAO
xiaorishu! :D
Lol XD I did not know that you watch this show too!
How come this is not available in HD?
Thanks!
Yes there is. They have a video about that.
Ok thanks, I'll find it
Can you please talk about what it is like to be a student in an Asian high or elementary school? And some of your experiences about having Asian students that have surprised, shocked, delighted or even made you think: "What did the parents do to make this child like this?"? Thx!
Eyelids, dang it guys. Some people have two double, some have two mono, some have one double and one mono, some have double in the morning and mono at night. Some have mono when they were young and naturally get double when they are grown up, some people paint glue on their mono to make double, some do surgery.
I love how you used idols from 2 top groups!!!!
Lol the picture of bunch of women together looking alike kinda remind me of Secret, they all look alike now
I quite like Martina's nose. It is a mighty fine nose.
Awkwaaard!
And he totally divorced her... :p Poor woman!~ >< lol!
Yeah. "The truth always comes out" as my mother says but she's usually talking about my grades...
Vaga Bond haha! :p
LOL sorry but that story was proved false on several different news websites!
to not sneeze these steps must be taken:
1. do not look at a bright light
2. say "pineapple"
3. do not sneeze
Monolids are moreover the dominant trait, but it is possible for an Asian to have double eyelids.. (ex. Im Chinese and I have double eyelids.)
+KradVortex Same. I have more like quadruple eyelids XD I feel like it's more prominent in Korea though.
I have it on one eye .-.
+KradVortex I find monolids attractive too.
It is possible because in southeast asia natural double eyelids are common af
Yeah true
Is it just me or is this video not recorded in HD!? I want to see my EYK in HD, GRRR!!
I'm not watching this until it is in HD! This is making my eyes burn!! :(
This was really eye opening. And I'm sorry, I really didn't mean for that pun.
I don have HD :(
Whats with the Minzy shade, she has already admitted to having plastic surgery.
a little -.-:|
She only did just her nose that's not a big deal.
I'm an Asian and I have double eyelids, and I have big nose, too. :D
Why do you people want make yourself a twin to another?? We don't even know how differenciate you with the other ones. How creepy it is.
Simon, yeap! It's so damn freaky!!
No matter how they called it, it's still a plastic surgecy to me.
You look Middle Eastern, I am sure by Asian, they mean Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans etc, not Arabs.
And the Court awarded him $100,000 for it.
Swamp Donkey Def: A very ugly, usually fat girl who hangs around in bars and clubs waiting to sexually assault males who are too drunk to defend themselves.
Ah the "I thought I was getting a Lexus but instead a Toyota" jokes :L
TL;DR Question: I've heard of some parents abandoning their babies in the streets of Seoul, does this happen often? Have you seen it before? Plus I've heard there are boxes in which people put their babies in there and then they are taken to an orphanage, have you seen these as well?
I hope CL would never get any plastic surgery no matter how much YG comment of how 'ugly' she is. Seriously, I don't think that she is ugly! I think she is lovable just the way she is.
in latin america, you need a photo in your resumen too
Off topic but, your love for each other makes me want to cry. It's so beautiful TT-TT you're so lucky to have each other!
(I mean, that's like people preaching to my about saying "your Septum piercing makes you look hideous!" Like it's still a form of body modification soooo.)
in your next tldr can you please talk about sasaengs? i've heard some bad stuff about them but how bad could they be?
Not all Asians have monolids XD I'm Singaporean and I have double eyelids. A third one appears occasionally when I am sleep deprived lol.
Now I know why I kept saying everyone looks the same whenever my friend shows me pictures of KPOP idols... Most of them have some form of plastic surgery :(
Edit: Here in Singapore, it is actually kinda rare to find someone with monolids(well to me anyway). My brother has monolids and I don't know who he got it from since my whole family has double... Probably from my great grandparents.
Nijidesu My whole family has double eyelids too! My family lives in Toronto now but we're Singaporean as well :D
But I really love the way you portayed this topic, and the way you portray every controversial topic in Korea. I love that you never resort to scorning Korean society or culture, and that you actually explain the cause and roots of the issue! Love you guys so much xx
Yay! a TLDR on my birthday~ i will consider it as a present from you guys ^_^ haha XD
If Taeyang changed his eyes, I would be so upset because I love them so much. Sexy eyes, sexy face, sexy everything! OMG! He is beautiful!
I guess PS is the same as tattoo.. after you get the first one you get addicted and that's why you keep wanting to get more of it
Hey Martina and Simon! Can you guys talk about half-asians in Korea? Do you know any in Korea and if so, how are they viewed/treated? I'm aware that there are half-asian models in Asia but do some Koreans try to look more like half-asians?
that trend is more noticiable in japan tbh, they love halfies
OMG, why am I reading the subs- I SPEAK ENGLISH!! LOL
Effects of too much Korean drama??
TL;DR
How do people deal with allergies in South Korea? I have dust and pollen allergies as well as a dairy allergy (this only includes cow milk and products from the milk).
I have to take medicine every morning for my airborne allergies, and I was wondering if you are able to obtain medicine for your allergies, or are able to bring your own stuff over, or if allergies over there are handled differently?
I also know that you two went to a vegan restaurant, but is it difficult to deal with food allergies(such as a milk allergy) at a regular restaurant or store?
Thanks!
About the double eyelid thing I'm Asian and have natural double eyelids.....
They've posted a comment regarding about natural double eyelids ages ago; it only got flooded with other comments so don't worry, they know. :)
K I wasn't trying to be mean or anything its just that whenever they do this kind of video and it had something to do with I just like to point it out
same I'm mix though but do have double lids
Jennifer Nguyenwhy did people start calling it double eyelid when its just a crease in ONE eyelid i don't get it.
Idk (//・_・//)
WAIT WAIT. That actually works? D:
Badzeep
saying anything really....its a distraction technique.
TehMomo hehe I always thought the way the word "pineapple" is pronounced actually stops the sneezing. but I guess youre right ^^
Badzeep haha it does for me atleast!
Good job Simon and Martina! This is the first vid on TH-cam that gives a fair commentary on plastic surgery in Korea.
Are moles/beauty marks beautiful in Korea?
yeah
wel it depends what kind of mole
Can you give me examples? (If you can! :3)
TheICEgirl6100 Oh,you mean the actress from the drama 'My Love From The Stars'! Am I right? :3
And thank you so much for your reply! ♥
Shoot Anonymous
Yeah that's kinda the problem in Germany... honestly speaking I don't even know the official reason to why one should attach a photo to an application. But we all know it's because the employer can choose the person whos face he/she likes. >.>
Allthough, to be fair, concern about this has been stated in public over the last few years and it's not a "must do" anymore but a "can do".
With that said and despite the fact that a testrun by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency on how no photo on an application actually increases the chances for women and immigrants to be invited for an interview,
it still is most of the time demanded and won't change within the next few years.
Not all Asians have single eyelid
Yes, I agree with that. Southeast Asians like Filipinos have double eyelids though I am definitely not generalizing it with all Southeast Asians. :)
Yeah I have double
Lots of Eastern Asians have double eyelids too.
+Wendy Hu i have one monolid and one double eyelid. rip eyeliner.
I have 1 double eye lid and then I have 1 that's one eye lid it's just so weird so I cover my 1 lid eye
What does TL;DR mean??
***** THANKS!
does simon wear foundation lmao flawless skin
pfffttt I don't consider mole removal as plastic surgery. Same as hair removal. How did you get the mole removal done? Just put a paste and it will fall off by itself after a few days right?
Why is it when people say 'Asian', they always think monolid people. Southeast and Southern Asians exist too you know. And most of us have double eyelid.
dumm005 preach! hahaha in this part of Asia, it's actually difficult to see people with monolids! XD
And your point? Does it make you feel superior?
What part of my comment did I say 'We're superior than they are'? Jeez I was just saying that the way people generalize Asians is a little too much.
slsudhdnsmsjz Her point is that there are more Asians in existence than Northeast Asians. She couldn't have made her statement more clear.
