- Join me for 24 hours in the hospital - see what it's really like to be a junior doctor!
Currently I'm on a hematology rotation (specialty of blood disorders). In the morning I see patients in a hematology clinic, then in the afternoon I see patients in the hospital. When 5pm rolls arounds, I take on a new role covering the ward overnight. That means I'm seeing patients in the emergency department as they come into hospital and managing any issues that come up on the ward (patients who are already admitted).
When discussing patient cases, this is only my perspective and is not meant to be reflective of how all physicians should treat patients. Note: the chest x-ray is a borrowed image and not from the patient I was treating.

Welcome back! Some medical students at our hospital recently did a speed test on our tube system, and they go around at 27 mph! I was impressed. I work on a peds unit and the kids LOVE to watch the tubes fly in. Sometimes we send goodies amongst floors and the kids think “hospital elves” are delivering them presents 😂

I know you're just a junior Doctor, but I'm pretty sure you're more human and dedicated than other old/experienced doctors. My mom had breast cancer, and she always told me that 90% of any patient's recovery, is thanks to the great treatment/humanity from doctors and nurses. I believe that.
cristina solano Makes sense, older doctors have seen more death especially cancer patients. The Doctors tend to be a lot more jaded

I'm glad you're learning the benefits of clarifying your orders and encouraging questions, so staff don't have to wake you up later. You might also look into the benefits of "if this, then that' orders, particularly for routine procedures.

Entei Raikou Hi, I’m an NP doing my doctorate and did a recent ethics presentation. It is common in residents and under treated. I’ve read that some programs are working to raise awareness of early signs of burn out and resources as alcohol and other methods are used to cope. If you are experiencing this you should speak to the school about your resources available.
Yes most residents are burnt out at certain points during residency and this can go on for weeks, months or longer or come and go. You have to be available to work any day or night and so it is hard to plan hobbies, special events etc. You are often changing rotations or hospitals each month so you are always new in your environment. You are constantly evaluated and know in the back of your mind you are basically auditioning for fellowships and jobs. Many residents are pretty hard on themselves/perfectonists. Many residents are in $100,000-300,000 student debt in North America. You are often working 80 or more hours per week and expected to work for 24+ hours at a time without breaks or sleep. You work about half the weekends of the year and work on many holidays. (In the last 3 years I worked every easter weekend, every thanksgiving weekend, a Christmas and some other holidays). You witness a lot of death and suffering and are sometimes yelled at by patients or other health care team members. Occasionally doctors make mistakes because we are human but it can have big consequences to people's health/lives. All these reasons lead to recurrent burnout among many/most residents.

I love watching your videos so much! I've always found anything medical very interesting and though I'm not wanting to be doing anything on the medical side of things for work I want to work in a children's ward as a play specialist. I'm slowly working my way to that goal. I recently spent 2 months in hospital (in london uk) for 3 major emergency spinal operations with a lot of complications. I love watching the behind the scene style of your videos. always really informative and I learn a lot!

Would love to see a vid about feedback you get from the senior residents & attendings. On the documentaries I’ve watched it seems like the higher ups can be kind of hard on the newer residents so would love to hear your experiences with that
Great vid once again Siobhan! Wondering- how far away are your call rooms usually to where you are assigned? Are they in the middle of the hospital making it easier to go in all directions? What if your on different floors? How many floors are you generally assigned to check for the night? What if you're a full 10mins away or something from the furtherest patient? Sorry for all the q's!

Great channel and content! Question - when it comes to primary care, what is the difference between the internal medicine and family medicine specialties and as a single guy in my 20s, which should I choose for my primary care physician?
In my military service (Air Force), when we were on QRA5 (Quick Reaction Alert, in less than 5 minutes they must be airborne), basically scramble the fighter jets we used to sleep with the shoes on, just to save few seconds, but on longer QRAs (15+) we didn't.

i hope u can maintain your coolness down the road like maybe 10-20 yrs as a doctor. some of the doctors i work with in the hospital r grumpy/mean/rude and unprofessional... but then they're the older generation doctors hahah
