**CHEAP** Heater Controls Fix | Fan/Blower Speed Resistor Fuse Replacement | Fiesta MK6

  • Last year I made a video showing how to replace the resistor pack which controls the speed of the interior fan/blowers. These are a common failure point on these cars and mine has now blown for the 3rd time in about a year. I mentioned this in a recent video where I discussed the repair costs I've had since owning this car and one of my subscribers commented saying that it is the fuse on these resistor packs which blows and that it can be replaced. I looked into this a bit further and it turns out they are simple to replace and also much cheaper than buying a whole new resistor pack each time the fuse blows.
    You can find a pack of replacement thermal fuses here: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174947945686
    And if you need to know where the resistor pack is located/how to remove it, you can check out my video: • Fixing the heater cont...
    I hope you enjoy this video and find it useful.

    If you grip the thermal fuse with a pair of ping nose pliers they will take the heat

      I think you mean grip the wire

  • @bobp6742
    @bobp6742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You could also use a heat shunt on the fuse leads to divert the heat..

    It's easier to test the original fuse while it's still attached.
    Holding the wire with pliers between the fuse and the joint will stop the risk of overheating.

    Interesting video, thanks. I tested one of these by unplugging the plug and plugging it into spare resistor pack unit. I have a laser pointer thermometer and the resistor pack get very hot quickly, 200c on the green bit. because it wasn't in the blowing airflow. A clogged cabin filter will restrict air flow and and maybe cause faster burnout of the unit and as the resistor is next to the filter if it is mucky it will get toasted, or worse .maybe.

    I had this problem... the issue was the bearings running rough in the blower motor although the resistor pack did need replacing also.... a pig to exchange by having to reach and remove 6 bolts blind after removing the glovebox upside down in the passenger footwell...
    Obviously the fuse blow because they having to work harder because of the resistance of the knackered bearings.

      Yeah mine did exactly that the first time I changed the resister, it blew again within a few days. Changed the motor and it sorted for a year or so, then it blew again. That’s why I tried this and so far it’s not blown again

    I’m sure the original fuse is fused on / pardon the pun !
    Like a welding process heating up the two parts to be connected!
    Similar to spot welding where the metals are heated to a point where they embody each other.
    Didn’t want to use the term being fused together, even though that is what I mean!
    If I’m wrong?
    Apologies!

    Does it matter that you used a 250V AC in a 12V DC circuit? I can't find any 12V DC ones

      @@MendItModIt excuse me 😅, i was wondering if the solder doesn't melt from the resistor heat.... after a long period of use, maybe 5 continuous hours?

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@a.hernandez3319 oh I get what you mean now. It’s possible, I guess it depends on the type of solder used. Lead-free solder has a higher melting point if you were worried. I guess if it did melt the fuse would just fall off and stop it working. But I would hope the melting point would be higher than the rating of the fuse. Again it depends on the solder.

    Different but related issue with blower speed - when the A/C is on, it will only work on blower speeds 1 and 2. When you select 3 or 4, the A/C turns itself off. Any ideas what might cause that?

      @@fordfreak1442 The resistor is in three sections with the tappings going to different pins. If a section of the resistor is broken a speed wont,t work. The tappings or connections are the bumps in the green bit in the video.

    Good info to save a few quid, u need to brush up on ya soldering skills tho ... hamfisted comes to mind LOL ... always flux & tin all surface to be soldered, sand/file clean solder iron tip, if it's not copper coloured it's dirty, flux soots up everything it touches as it gasses off.

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to brush up on your listening skills then because I explained why I only used flux on the one side 🤭 most people won’t have it or even know what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️ they’ll also likely have a cheap, nasty eBay iron, it won’t be pretty, but it’ll work. My point is the video is meant to be relatable to the majority of people.
