Just as an FYI, if you lean on the saftey systems too much to correct your lane position, it will use the rear brakes A LOT to make corrections, to the point that they may overheat, and wear the pads in like 5-10k miles.
I had a 2010 JK Wrangler that did that although not to the point of overheating. No lane keeping obviously, but just VSC "helping" in every corner. Computer was chewing up rear brakes. I drive a 2019 BMW X3 now and it's not happening. The bimmer is using some kind of torque vectoring instead.

We own a 2022 MDX Advanced and we won't own another Acura product. Not because of issues, any car and all cars have issues. For me it comes down to how you're treated as a customer and how Acura handles those issues. Acura is a faux luxury brand that's probably dying and as such they seem to be cutting corners in the customer experience. They do not do loaners for maintenance and for repairs it's up to the dealer. That's a huge problem because that means I need to carve out half a day and as a business owner spending that time sitting at a dealer doing nothing is pretty brutal. More importantly Acura doesn't like standing behind their product. Case in point? Our driver's seat. I've owned dozens of cars and never had a seat structure fail but our driver's seat outside lower cushion bolster began to fail. The failure was related to the seat structure and the way the bolster was engineered. The bolster itself was fine. The whole thing literally began to detach from the rest of the seat frame. A known issues. I'm 6'6 and 200 lbs my wife weighs about 115. Neither of us are big people. The the bolster began separating, an online search showed this to be a common problem. I notified the dealer that I'd need to have that looked at and repaired on my next visit. We are still under the bumper to bumper warranty. Fast forward a few weeks, I take the car in, after reviewing it they said Acura was not covering it because this was "wear and tear". This is most definitely not wear and tear, it's not the leather cracking or getting ripped it's the physical structure of the seat that failed resulting in the bolster pulling away from the rest of the seat structure. I referred the dealer to similar issues reported by others, they said they agreed but Acura wasn't covering it and so I needed to escalate it and they would do the same. I logged into our Acura account that weekend and submitted the inquiry. In the inquiry I included links to several others reporting the same issue as well as Acura's own internal notification to dealers which was on NHTSA's website regarding the problem. Acura replied very quickly and promptly told me no saying "this fails to meet warranty parameters" whatever the hell that means. I sent a reply asking for clarification, to which they replied this isn't under warranty, a vague response. I replied back with all my info again (Keep in mind this was in the initial submission) stating my vehicles age, miles, problem as well as reminding them Acura is well aware of this issue. The reply? Not covered, this time they sent back a snipped from the warranty book, of which I also possess a copy. I replied back to Acura with add'l info from their warranty book as well as some state law on issues like this. Acura agreed to repair it. After I spent tons of time going back forth on an issue that was a slam dunk for basic warranty repair. We will NOT own another Acura and this has also soured us on Honda, of which we were planning to buy for our kids. As soon as the warranty and our already paid for extended service contract is over, the Acura is going away. They will not get another dime from me after such absurdity.
@@Hefe179 great question. I ask myself that a lot. I grew up loving Acura products and the vehicle gets a lot of things right. For example, the ergonomics and control reach is great for my wife and I both. This is rare given my height. The seats are fantastic and it’s reasonably quiet. The Acura was my wife’s top pick because she liked the three row at the price of the X5 so we went Acura. Won’t happen again.
Wow. I've never had any issues with my Acura's. Outside of a recall. My dealer gets me a loaner car whenever I take it in. I guess my only gripe with them is the loaner car is usually an Integra without the manual transmission.
That's what you see in the Japanese "luxury" brands. Their models are just up-badged consumer brand models. The entire line up is a line of "cutting corners". You'll hear "well the japanese brands have low cost of ownership" that's because they're cheap cars dressed up as expensive cars.
My BMW 5 series was nice and felt so special in it. It it all changed with all sorts of issues. Viewed fhe Acura MDX and we will probably buy one soon.
I was cross shopping between the MDX-S and X5 40i (m-sport). I went to 4 different dealerships for each. 3 out of the 4 Acura dealerships wouldn't budge below MSRP and the last one was willing to do $1,500 off (loyal rebate) however slapped some BS add-ons like ceramic coating, lo-jack ect.. So in the end it was still more expensive. On BMW side of things, from the 1st to the last, I was offered 3% off to the last one coming in at 9% off. With my CCA BMW membership, I was able to get another 1K off a new X5. So in the end, I custom ordered a nearly fully optioned X5 40i M-sport, got 10K off, vehicle was delivered in 3 weeks of ordering and out the door cost (NJ) was just under the MDX-S at MSRP. The thing that is really killing Acura right now are their prices and not willing to budge under MSRP especially on those Type-s trims were every single one of the dealers I walked into had 5K ADM on the integra's type-s.. Asking 80K for an MDX-S, a performance SUV, that honestly lacks the performance and fuel economy of it's competition, it's a hard pill to swallow when you can walk into the competition and get a better price for a better vehicle. Acura needs to understand it's not the type of brand for the money.
@@Big_Red1 it says you have to be a member for one year before rebates! I have to join even though I don't have a BMW that I don't want to buy until I get a rebate! Wow!
Totally. I went to try the type s but no dealership would let me, when I went to bmw they were like here’s the key bring it back when you done. Let’s be honest here the type s is a good suv but how they treated it like it’s a national treasure is just laughable. Also the second row I just can’t get comfortable with, felt like I was sitting on the floor.
Whoever convinced Acura to give up their Sport Hybrid system (it was in the RLX, and the MDX Sport Hybrid; it was a J35 paired with a mild hybrid system) should be fired
@willybehan770 As the owner of an MDX Hybrid, I've been preaching those exact words for years now, lol. Acura's hybrid system with their decently quick in-house dual clutch was and still is years ahead of what's currently in the hybrid market. Full electric cars are fast off the line, but i don't have the time to charge 20-30mins during work and family trips.
I don't love the styling of the new Lexus RX500h but its certainly the closest competitor - typically around 26MPG vs the 17MPG of the MDX-S. Same 5.5s 0-60 time.
All about $$ for current gen of mdx and rdx Acura doesn’t get enough money to modify the design it for hybrid. Integra in other hand is heavily based on civic so developing a hybrid version should be straightforward.
@@Jeez001 Yes but the power train already existed…so I don’t know why they killed it off? The current mdx still has a J35…the rdx tho I can see why that wouldn’t have a hybrid
This generation of Acura is so underrated. They've done a lot of things right here and I hope they continue in this direction, but it pains me to see how little they sell, especially the TLX.
Bad dealers, piano black gloss BS, bad fuel economy…it’s in a competitive segment and these obvious issues will continue to hold it back. The BMW and Mercedes dealerships are light years ahead in buying and maintenance experience.
We have a 2023 TYPE S since new about 26,000 miles. Absolutely no regrets. The air suspension is great, as is the Audio, seat, etc. Easy and inexpensive to maintain. Would buy another in a heartbeat.
The gas mileage on the MDX Type S is absurd and insulting for the lack of performance compared to real luxury rivals. I owned a 2024 GLE 53 and averaged 19-22 mpg with 429 HP and 413 lb-ft of torque. I traded it in for a 2025 GLE 63s and the dealership sold the 53 Certified Pre-Owned for $79K with less than 10K miles. Superior performance, better gas mileage, and far more luxury for only a few thousand dollars more (Type S is ~$76K) while retaining the factory warranty + 12 months of unlimited miles on the Mercedes CPO program. I'm glad Acura fixed the infotainment to a degree, but the archaic digital gauge cluster and Acura claiming that Type S is a "performance luxury vehicle" is inappropriate for this price point. Acura is not offering a bargain in this segment. They aren't competing at all. It's a different class vehicle.
100%. Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes compete in the mid-sized luxury performance SUV segment. To a slightly lesser degree, so does Audi. Acura does not. The MDX is a nice vehicle and I did consider it. But I bought a loaded 2024 X5 with the B58 and have zero regrets.
I own a 2025 M4 and have driven the BMW suvs. My wife has a 2023 MDX Type S. We have had the MDX for a little over a year and just got back from a 1500 mile road trip. The air suspension in comfort mode and powertrain is highly underrated on the Type S. It's not something that appears on a spec sheet, but for a ton of reasons I wouldn't trade the MDX for an X5 or X7 of any trim. There's a smoothness to the whole thing that just doesn't happen with the BMWs. Also, we averaged 24mpg going 82mph on the trip...
Here’s what you’re missing though… Acura will discount the hell out of these. I got my MDX Type S Advance for just under $67K. At that price point, it was a no brainer for me. I am OK with the 21mpg I get, though I do wish the range was better (only get around 320-330 miles per tank or so). If you want the best of the best, this isn’t it. BUT, if you want 90% of a BMW/Mercedes with a lesser drivetrain that is still more than enough for boatloads less money, then the MDX Type S could be the one for you. It was for me!
Had a 2023, loved it for the most part. Obviously one of the shortcomings was the touch pad system (crazy on a car of this caliber in 2023), and the wireless charging overheated my iPhone constantly. I wound up just plugging in the phone to charge it. Air suspension sometimes seemed to have a mind of its own, raising and lowering at stoplights. Aside from that, amazing car - very quick, quiet, smooth, and yes, one of the best sound systems in the world.
I just tried to “build” a 75k X5. Once I chose actual leather which the Type S has, I’m at 76k. This is BEFORE I’ve selected any options. Once I start selecting options that are already standard on the Acura, I’m above 80K easy.
100% we are “still” (actually switching) buying German- we are on our 2nd MDX a 2019 & it’s had a couple issues including a leaking radiator & forward collision camera going bad @ 75k miles to the tune of $1800, the X5 xDrive4.0 is actually cheaper, has more HP, a lot more TQ & gets much better MPG on top of it!! People reporting 23-26 mpg on avg & both our standard 2015 & 2019 MDXs only managed 20-22 tops, while the type S gets like 17!!! I’ll take more power/TQ, better handling, & nearly 10mpg better gas mileage w/ a lower price any day!!!!
If you're concerned about an $1,800 repair @75K miles, you are about to have your eyes opened going German. You will spend way more than that, way before 75K miles, multiple times, on stuff that shouldn't be breaking. Regret will soon set in - trust me.

Elegant design, for me the winner of the year or nexts in design, sure also in engine similar to all Japanese and Americans brand's, but I prefer Volvo for the resistant materials on the roof, front, back and sides. The safety of you, your family and pedestrians should be #1.
I’ve owned a type s and now own an x7. The type s is an incredible vehicle. Comfortable and actually fun to drive. However, the MPG is below average. And coupled with a smaller gas tank (18.5 gallons) you are getting a paltry range of 350 miles. The X7 has better room, is more luxurious, and gets 26mpg on average. Coupled with a 22 gallon g tank the X7 has a range of 570 miles to one tank. That’s a 32% improvement in MPG and a 63% increase in range…. Plus, the push button controls on the acura are terrible. It’s a tech that nobody wants and fortunately many are going to away from. Look at the new Suburbans / tahoes and the like. The new stalk for 25 is much improved to the outgoing model.
With a $25-30k budget (used vehicles fine), what would you guys pick for a mid sized sedan or small SUV? Want something fun but reliable and not horrible gas mileage. Virginia taxes the hell out of vehicles beyond $20k so don't want to go too high. Also don't want to go older than 2017 or so.
Don't think I'd like the touchy brakes especially around the city in stop and go traffic. I'm assuming this only applies to the Type-s with the Brembo brakes?
I think based on price alone the MDX type s has its hands full competing with the q7. The line up really good in that regard. X5 or x7 are better for more money though. I just don't know if someone does legit cross shopping and drives a GV80 or Q7 prestige, and chooses the type s MDX.
X5 with M sport suspension has a very firm uncomfortable ride quality. Drove the X5 coil over suspension (base X5) and its way to bouncy over road imperfections for a luxury vehicle. I'm hoping MDX type S does a better job with ride quality.
I don't get the hard on for these 30+ speaker audio systems? Must be a processing nightmare! Would be interested how it compares to a decent aftermarket system though. The midrange dip prob helps to keep vocals from sounding like they are in your face.
Yep. I had to turn some of the midrange frequencies down a bit because of that on our 2023 Type S using a 12 band eq. All the speakers, if well tuned like the Type S, does give good imaging in both the front and middle row which doesn't happen in smaller systems.
They should have give custumers more air vents in the second and third row even the CX-90 has third row vents even though they are at kneel level but a vent is a vent😃. The CX-90 just need a liitle more insolation materials, fix the transmission, add door sensors on the rear doors, off a bench seat because not everyone love captian chairs, more interior space, and lastly please make better infotanment system that has full touch capabilites.
The problem for MDX is fuel consumption. And the review model is type s and that price range around X5 or GLE ball park with better luxury package and fuel consumption. Acura still need to fix the fuel consumption.
@@star9732yes, mostly because of the range between fill ups, not so much the cost. For people that have to drive alot, having to stop to fill up a lot gets annoying.
Is there still no hybrid option for the MDX? I currently own one, and it’s a real gas guzzler. With the Lexus RX now offering 35 mpg, it feels like the MDX has fallen behind (I drive a lot). I also preferred the previous generation's double-line tail lamps-the classic Acura MDX look, almost as iconic as the Porsche’s signature rear lights. It’s disappointing that they changed such a beautiful detail to something that, frankly, looks a bit off and whatever.
I am still confused between this (non type s) and pilot. They are same length wheelbase, almost same length but pilot is much more practical. I think Acura just tried to make it look more "sporty" by lengthening the hood and not out necessity, given engine and wheel placement doesn't move.
@savagegeese did you ever figure out why your long term Type S would cut power after a sharp turn? Where I live I need to jump out into a divided highway like that and having the power cut would not be good to say the least.
@Que67kdro90 I had a CX-90 as a rental, and it was the most mixed-bag experience I've had in a while. Nice interior space. Great engine. Horrible rough tranmission and stiff ride. Not a great option from where I am sitting.
If you had up to 72k to buy an SUV and you were looking to keep it for 10-15 years and your focus was on reliability, good build quality and comfort what would be the top three SUv's you would recommend?
Ha, going on 15 years with my MDX, so yes, people do keep their cars that long! In fact, the average age of vehicles on the road has hit a record 12.6 years in 2024. I’d say the data speaks for itself, but maybe it’s time to update that outdated perspective. The truth is, more people are holding onto their cars longer, not tossing them aside after a few years. That is why reliability is an important consideration for people who invest wisely.
To expensive considering on lower trims its civic plus inside. I heard on the type s variant the vtm 4 was having issues. Also, have they fixed the hesitation when turning hard from a stop.
A big advantage is something they didn't change. The V6. I hope acura hears the complaints from Lexus buys and don't get rid of the V6 in the next gen. I think they should offer a 4 turbo but also offer a v6 for those who want it.
Ride quality and handling are far superior here. Much smoother, better seats and audio system. I think the Mazda Interiors are much nicer place to be has a much better looking exterior they just need a couple cycles of learning to smooth out the drivetrain performance and ride and handling
As long as you have AWD its going to feel good to drive. But the non type S is on the softer softer side compared to Mazda. Its about what you value, the Regular MDX feels slower as well.
I could not re create it this time. I was told there were calibrations changed and it felt like it. However was changed is internal honda knowledge only. It felt much better in this Type S compared to before.
What if you secured your phone/water bottle/whatever else rattles around every time you hit the gas and take a corner? I’m trying to guess what that would sound like.
I must be 1 of a handful of people that prefer the 1 to 1 touch interface of the old infotainment. And its weird to see Mark welcome the touchscreen considering he's a button guy.
I'll join that handful of people. I think it's pretty good, actually. I'm 39 and came from other brands with pretty good touch screens, and including a 11g civic as well that has the touch screen. I like the 1:1 touch interface in the RDX i own better. I dunno why. It's simple, easy, and frankly you're not interacting with it most of the time anyway even if it was a buggaboo.

Why did you buy a car from a faux luxury brand that is dying?
@@Hefe179 great question. I ask myself that a lot. I grew up loving Acura products and the vehicle gets a lot of things right. For example, the ergonomics and control reach is great for my wife and I both. This is rare given my height. The seats are fantastic and it’s reasonably quiet.
The Acura was my wife’s top pick because she liked the three row at the price of the X5 so we went Acura.
Won’t happen again.
I've gotten a loaner twice while getting my RDX serviced. I guess it's up to the dealer.
I thought this was a nice lavender in the thumbnail, only to find out in the video that it's typical Dystopia Grey
Honda has been absolutely KILLING IT on external styling these past few years 👍

My BMW 5 series was nice and felt so special in it. It it all changed with all sorts of issues. Viewed fhe Acura MDX and we will probably buy one soon.
what year model is your 5 series? I'm looking to get an X5 (prob M) but afraid of maintenance costs and crazy money pit.
Looked at Acura MDX and Mazda CX-90, bought CX-90. Excellent vehicle.
literlly that Mazda CX-90 is hard to not choice it over the MDX due to the price.
Acura needs to understand it's not the type of brand for the money.
what is a CCA BMW membership?

This suv is 90% perfect. Add in a mild hybrid system to bump up the power to 400hp with a bump in mpg to 20+mpg and this thing is a winner.
Nice review, now I’d love to see these updates crossover to the RDX as well as the type S treatment
This generation of Acura is so underrated. They've done a lot of things right here and I hope they continue in this direction, but it pains me to see how little they sell, especially the TLX.
Bad dealer experiences keep ppl away
This gen TLX is a poorly packaged product compared to Integra and RDX.
Bad dealers, piano black gloss BS, bad fuel economy…it’s in a competitive segment and these obvious issues will continue to hold it back. The BMW and Mercedes dealerships are light years ahead in buying and maintenance experience.
@@atl3630not . The interior is too small not fuel economy
100% correct about the braking, especially in any of the Sport modes.
Glad Acura had the balls to keep the V6 on all trims of the MDX while other automakers no longer use urinals. Love this channel.

@@ryanmcfarland1900 24 in the type S seems great real world economy. At that speed our regular MDX would get more like 22-23.
@@bradstonesifer3398 very fair comment. Did not realize they were discounting these much.

Am I still buying German cars? No, never was. 😂Another great review from Savage Geese!
Thank you for another great review. Always a pleasure
This is why a CPO mdx which is basically the same price as a cpo pilot is the best of both worlds.
I recently got 27mpg using eco pro mode on a 25 X5 M60. But Sport mode is on some other shit that Acura doesn't know anything about.
You get it 👍🏾
If you're concerned about an $1,800 repair @75K miles, you are about to have your eyes opened going German. You will spend way more than that, way before 75K miles, multiple times, on stuff that shouldn't be breaking. Regret will soon set in - trust me.

Fully loaded Type S is 75K, not 80K. That’s still A LOT cheaper and more reliable than most German options today. A loaded X5 with the fake “M”trim is $96K+ (but has a better engine of course), all other brands give you a rattly 4-cyl for more cash. This V6 MDX is a bargain even if you are leasing.

@@KhanJoltrane Yeah i have been around crappy speakers all my life so its interesting to learn about what makes a good audio system "good" because I feel that most can tell the difference between high end vs low end.
3:10 Brilliant ! Could BMW reskin the g90 to look like the familiar e39 ?
The new stalk for 25 is much improved to the outgoing model.
have they improved the ventilated seats?!
Its maybe 2% better
With a $25-30k budget (used vehicles fine), what would you guys pick for a mid sized sedan or small SUV? Want something fun but reliable and not horrible gas mileage. Virginia taxes the hell out of vehicles beyond $20k so don't want to go too high. Also don't want to go older than 2017 or so.
Don't think I'd like the touchy brakes especially around the city in stop and go traffic. I'm assuming this only applies to the Type-s with the Brembo brakes?
The MDX is what the most successful Mary Kay rep in your “suburb of a state capital”-level city drives
Love that frost pink
I wonder if it has to do with all the fake engine noise?
Do many people spending $75k on a new car care about fuel consumption?
People aren't dumping 75k at one time, they lease or finance. Fuel definitely is an issue at 4-6$ a gallon for premium which turbo engines need.
@@star9732Yes, yes they do care
@@wyw201 interesting. Because an extra 40 bucks a month in gas seems trivial.

Wow. They made it look like a cross between a CRV and the previous Buick Envision. No one is else is doing that in this price range. Pretty cool.

Buy two Honda CRV sports
Not sure anyone keeps their cars 10-15 years now.
