    Masterful performance this! The violin has a very unique voice that would make it very difficult to play for most violinists. It sometimes sounds even muted, yet in the second section, it enlivens. So, it must be the skill of the violinist that this violin appreciates and is "willing" to cooperate in the production.

    As a young man nearly 60 years ago, I first became hooked on Bach through a double LP of Yehudi Menuhin and George Malcolm playing the Violin and harpsichord sonatas, which I listened to again and again - until the records started to wear out! I always re-acted strongly to the 1st movement of this sonata (no. 5) and came to realise just how well Bach understood human emotions and how uncannily he could express them. This movement is marked as "Lamento" in some manuscripts, and indeed the violin does the lamenting while the harpsichord provides empathy and consolation. Menuhin's lament reaches an almost unbearable peak about 5 minutes in, but then the stolid suppport of Malcolm's playing (he does not attempt to make the harpsichord sound pretty) gradually calms the violin down - reaching a lovely togetherness at the end of the movement. I have therefore looked forward to the NBS recordings of these Sonatas with anticipation - and some trepidation. Sato and Ares make an excellent interpretation, and I have listened with huge pleasure. If I say that I think they don't quite reach the depths which Menuhin and Malcolm plunged, this is in no way a criticism, and may be coloured by my youthful memories. th-cam.com/video/d6m6-ScSjms/w-d-xo.html

    • @defnitely_not_me1843
      @defnitely_not_me1843 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those 2 recordings are completely incomparable due to the complete shift in interpretation paradigms. You cannot achieve the same level of (melo)-dramatization through baroque interpretation as you can through romantic interpretation - at least on long held notes.
      Beyond the benefit of "historical accuracy", baroque technique makes up for it generally through more refined and engaging articulation. However I think this piece just doesn't benefit from it as much as some others might.

    Great note arcs, concave. Give the sound an assertive start then let it dissipates. In contrast, common violin play uses convex arcs; start the sound and then push it louder.

  • @hiberniancaveman8970
    @hiberniancaveman8970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’ve watched this several times now, and compared a few other versions. In this one, at the start the violin seems to be full of painful emotional intensity, while the harpsichord seems to express “keep calm and carry on”, but they seem to come together as the piece develops. I wonder if that is what Bach actually intended?
    This unique contrast must, to a large extent, come from the players, but I wonder if the Baroque temperament has something to do with it? I have checked back with *Van Doeselaar on the Silbermann organ in Freiberg* starting at 3 min 16s, and he said that Baroque audiences expected this sort of harmonic tension.
    I find the harpsichord just a little soft: I wonder how it would sound on a fortepiano?

    • @stephenlee1756

    I disagree with the description that the second movement of this sonata belongs to the older trio sonata style. The right hand of the harpsichordist wasn’t meant for a second violin the same way the left hand wasn’t written for basso continuo.

      Yes, the harpsichord is unpleasantly harsh and loud in this recording. I think it's a recording issue, like microphone placement or mixing. Somebody needs to listen to this again and rebalance the audio, because most of the All of Bach recordings are spectacular in comparison.
