I have a hard time believing there will be a even greater composer than Bach. He is truly the best composer in my opinion. Thanks for a wonderful rendition as always NBS!❤
Check out Buxtehude, mondoville, Louis de caix d'hervelois, and Zelenka. Also, if you're into medieval music, I recommend Tomas Luis de Victoria, Gesualdo and Hildegard von Bingen
Knowing what you do, I can't argue with your choice, but being a retired performer and music historian I'm afraid I am not as able as you to claim a favourite. There were just so many composers at the time who were excellent in their own specific areas. It's often been said that Bach composed for God and Handel composed for man. I doubt that you'll find anyone from the time who composed better for the theatre, just as you can't find anyone more capable of composing chromatically than Bach. Rameau did a fantastic job composing for the French theatre and ballet, and in those genera there is none better, though Lully did a fine job in the former generation, especially with his chamber works. Handel stated envy for Telemann's ability to write, saying, "Telemann composes music like others write letters." It was an amazing time in music history with more great composers around in more different areas then there have been at any time before or since. To be sure, there have been other great composers, but they have simply never been in as great supply as they were then. That didn't always play to their advantage, but still, it has to be viewed as a golden age in music, and each composer of the time has to be viewed in the context of his (or in the case of Barbara Strotzi, her) own place in it. Do keep up your wonderful work, and your contributions to music on TH-cam. The world is wealthier for it.
The focus of this ensemble is sublime and magician Sato, total in control, is the magnificent centre of it. What a perfomance... unbelievable! (For those who're not well known with Bach, or classic music in general, but know something of soccer, this is Messi on the violin... one of a kind... and... he's also the coach)
This performance, this movement (more on violin than harpsichord), and this reconstruction burn with a hellfire, diabolical intensity that must have terrified listeners in Cöthen, Leipzig, or wherever JSB dreamed it up. It sure depicts the _viel Trübsal_ that Bach adapted it to depict in what we now call BWV 146. I can't imagine anyone alive at the time had ever heard anything so intense, angry, passionate, and complex. This, not least of all in the interpretive execution of Maestro Sato, is a miraculous testament to whom Phillip Aggesen below correctly identifies as the greatest composer of all time.
Non trovo parole (come sempre) per esprimere cosa provo ascoltando l’interpretazione della Netherlands Bach Society della suprema opera bachiana. Grazie. Siete unici meravigliosi strumenti per la voce di Dio. Grazie. Non riesco a trovar altro. Grazie
The new bar has been set. Outstanding. Kept thinking if period descriptions of what the great violinists looked like playing; Shunske has channeled Locatelli, Veracini, etc.
I sincerely feel that in cases like this it becomes less and less possible to understand it as a newly set "standard". I just don't see this ever becoming a standard. Not because of the impossibility of reaching this level but because I believe their is to much art in this performance to ever be considered as something to expect, to actually relate to. It's a masterpiece that can be admired not merely consulted. Music (just as life, knowledge, speech...) is free, interpretation is singular and musicians are human, therefore: unique, complete and perfect music. I find their performance to be this.
@@sbggillis6251 fair enough. However unique each performance is there are those we want to hear again and those we don’t. Was simply praising this one for being one I’d certainly return to as an exemplar of HIP.

Fantastic concerto performance! Personally, I prefer the authentic piano or harpsichord version as it has a unique beauty. Nonetheless, your playing is impressive. Well done!
This actually probably is the more "authentic" version, as it is thought that this concerto was originally written for violin, then transcribed for keyboard. (read the video description)

Wonderfully played by mr Sato, but as I said, I prefer the original BWV 1052 without an R.

@@staffanolofsson8201 the truth is no one really knows. There are features of 1052 that suspiciously very strongly resemble violin writing.
