Pokémon Gold and Silver: How Satoru Iwata Saved Game Freak

  • It's common knowledge that Satoru Iwata is responsible for helping Game Freak to include the Johto and Kanto regions in Pokémon Gold and Silver. The full story, though, is even more impressive.
At a time when Game Freak was about to collapse under the weight of Pokémania, with far too many projects to sort through and organize, Satoru Iwata swept in to save the day. Fans of Pokémon across the world have this man to thank for translating the original Pokémon games (Red and Blue) into English, as well as helping to make Pokémon Gold and Silver technological powerhouses with extremely efficient code.
This video is designed as a sequel of sorts to our first video, about the life of Satoshi Tajiri. Much like Pokémon Gold and Silver, this video is made from content that we cut out of our original video, which you can probably tell as we explore the contributions of Shigeki Morimoto and the infamous Mew glitch on the success of the franchise.
Tackling Satoru Iwata's history is something that a lot of you have requested, and this is only the start. We're considering a series of videos entitled "How Satoru Iwata Saved..." because, to a certain extent, everything Iwata-San touched turned to gold.
In the meantime, if you haven't already check out our original video on Pokémon Red and Blue, and Satoshi Tajiri's childhood. If you HAVE already seen it, check it out anyway! Have a look at how much we've learned over the past six months of making videos, and how crummy our first attempt was.
Pokémon: The Story of Satoshi Tajiri: • Pokémon: The Story of ...
Now, about the endslate of this video. As we mentioned in a previous video description, we've been running into a bit of financial trouble recently after our artist Kotor, who freelances for a living, lost one of his biggest clients. As such, while we didn't really want to start a Patreon, we're hoping that maybe a few of you might like to chip in a bit to help keep us fed over the next few months while we try to bounce back. Put simply, we don't have the luxury of a lot of time to work on these videos instead of doing actual paid work, which is why this is our first video in April.
But we don't want to do the whole Patreon thing if this isn't something you guys are actually on board with. If you're interested in helping us out and contributing so that we can make videos more frequently, let us know! We'd love to be able to do a video a week, but that's not something we can manage without outside help. So let us know what funky rewards you might like, although bear in mind that we're really hesitant about doing things that'll take creative time away from actually making videos (for obvious reasons).
Anyway, if you want to help us out but can't (or don't want to) donate money, that's totally cool. Be sure to give this video a 'like', and maybe share it with someone you know that loves Pokémon. If nothing else, just leave a comment, as apparently that helps the TH-cam algorithm in some way that I don't totally understand.
The music for this video is by Ross Budgen, and is the same track we used in our first Pokémon video, because we like consistency: • ♩♫ Emotional and Ambie...
Oh, and if you'd like to know where the information for this video came from, the majority of it comes from an Iwata Asks that was published by Nintendo for the release of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver: www.nintendo.c...
Some information was also taken from an interview with 4Gamer (translated by Silicon Era): www.siliconera....
Thanks for watching, you guys are awesome and we love reading your comments, even though we often don't have the time to respond in full.
Have a great day, and don't forget to keep working hard to achieve your dreams!

Iwata was Gamefreaks personal Mew. Was sort of present and no one was expecting anything but ended up showing himself when they really needed the help and helped Pokémon succeed. Amazing and also sort of fitting that Mew who was only vaguely in the game but was mystical, and far separated and apart from the game itself would randomly show up and become a real life myth within Pokémon community and spark the interest that would lead to its success.

Satoru Iwata "Revolutionized" the gaming industry with the Wii and DS. The company began to see a spiral with the failure of the Wii U and Iwata's death, but thankfully, we got an equally amazing President of Nintendo, Tatsumi Kimishima. Iwata's legacy in the Switch is surely showing. I think the Switch will surpass the record breaking sales of the Wii.

I mean, it's not entirely true. Pokemon had modest sales (not bad) and that mostly because they were released so late in a console's lifecycle. Pokemon's initial lack of success and support from Nintendo are blown out of proportions. The games did have development issues and delays, but that's partially because Game Freak almost ran out of money.
We know this because the first set of the TCG was released within the same year as the original Red and Green games, before Blue was even announced. Blue was initially a special release (and kind of a complete revamp, with updated art work and code) to celebrate hitting 1 million sales. TCG games aren't developped and printed overnight, they also take more than a year to properly develop. The anime premiered in April 1997 (6 months after the initial run of Blue that celebrated their 1 million sales). On average, the production schedule for an anime episode is 2 months, for a weekly series, that's usually a bit shorter, they have episodes finished well in advance and the entire thing needs to be planned, cast, written and storyboarded well in advance.
Pokemon as a franchise was already in full development before it even released, and it wasn't really a game on the brink of failure, it just had slow sales.

also, Iwata was the one who implemented the 2 region system in gold/silver/Crystal and also created the battle zone in Crystal. he remade Kanto in gold/silver/Crystal also created the transport system in less than a week from scratch all alone right before they where released.

The description of 'a map that was twice of the original games' doesn't cut it. Satoru Iwata's contribution to data compression made it possible to include the greatest feature a sequel title to have: access to a map of the original games where you could fight all the old major bosses, and ultimately, the player character of the original games. 18 years, and Pokemon fans have *still* been pining for this feature to come up again.

    • @KidPrarchord95
      @KidPrarchord95 ปีที่แล้ว

As much as I love the two-region approach, it was also kind of a detriment. Both Kanto and Johto ended up feeling under-baked in Gold/Silver, with the latter kind of feeling like its potential was a bit squandered.

      This.

    • @Ehal256
      @Ehal256 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is not actually true. All we know is that he did contribute some compression tools, but the compression used in Gold/Silver has a worse compression ratio than that used in gen 1. The algorithm was much faster to decompress though, that was the main improvement.

Talk to Morimoto, and he’ll have chat with you about ‘this amazing came out and helped with finishing the game.’ So happy GameFreak still reference him after 2 years.
RIP Satoru Iwata. Your legacy between Nintendo and GameFreak will never be forgotten, especially because you’ve helped skyrocket Pokémon into basically the #1 ‘best selling RPG game’.

Wow, I don't even know where to begin saying good things about this one. Sorry for not commenting on the last episode, by the way. I saw it the day it was posted, but I didn't have time to comment, and I forgot to ever go back and do so like I meant to do.
I had heard enough before about Iwata to know he was awesome, but.....wow. He really was an inspiration. Given the impact Pokemon had on my childhood and my life in general, I'm sure glad he did save the franchise and make sure it was translated for western audiences. Not to mention helping Pokemon Gold and Silver to exist at all, since Pokemon Gold is the version I have easily the fondest memories of from my childhood. Come to think of it, Pokemon Stadium was also the very first Nintendo 64 game I ever bought....I guess I really owe Iwata a lot (and may be just a bit of a Pokemon fanatic :P).
The moral of this episode feels like something I needed to hear right now. I'll be graduating from college after tomorrow, and I've been more than a little scared about figuring out how to make the most of my life afterwards. I feel a lot more hopeful now that I'll be able to find some way to make the world a better place by doing the kinds of things I like to do....even if I'm not entirely sure what that entails just yet :P
I'll gladly contribute to your Patreon once I have a new source of income. My only job up to this point - and it didn't even pay that well to begin with - was doing my comic strip for the school paper, so.....well, you get the idea.
Oh, and for the record, I strongly disagree that your first video was "crummy." Honestly, to this day it's still one of my favorite episodes of Video Game Story Time, and I re-watch it all the time when I need a pick-me-up :)

GF is lost without Iwata and it shows, Pokémon hasn’t had a Happy success since his death. The 2 switch games may sell like wildfire just means they have no incentive to close the massive divide between the fans and critics that grows wider every GF bonehead decision

Iwata was a bloody genius, and will be sorely missed, not just because of his abilities but because of his heart. He knew gamers, because he was a gamer first, and nothing could deter that.
    Rest in peace, Iwata-sama.

Can't believe this channel has only 3k subs. Just binge watched all of them. I really like the way the stories are presented in a very simple, easy to digest form with very good artwork and calm, but very articulate narration. If only I have dispensable money to provide support.
Also I would love to see a bit longer video about Iwata and his deeds and achievements. I see him as a pinnacle of love both of his career, craft and expertise with the heart of a true gamer. I know numerous channels made a documentary about his life and work but I'm interested on how your style of storytelling fits into that.

Iwata is missing. His dreams are missing. Nintendo changed again to the worse I think.
Iwata's creation "Nintendo Direct" is fading away...only mini directs. Nintendo got quiet again.

And thus with Pokémon saved, the franchise became one of Nintendo's biggest money-earners ever, giving them a nice nest egg when times were tough by the power of Satoru Iwata.
