I love how that first card instantly captures the magic of this game. You look at your card and you're certain you know what the ghost is saying, then another play chimes in with a different theory, and now you're not so sure. Meanwhile the ghost is just silently panicking, because one of you was right. Maybe your first guess was right, and your friend just lead you down a completely wrong path, or reverse, or worse, neither guess is right and now the ghost needs to course correct and it's brilliant.
the table props make for a great mood. the dress up makes it even better.
The best soundtrack to play with Mysterium is the soundtrack from the movie The Legend of Hell House... and it should begin with Belasco's record where he says:
'Welcome to my house. I'm delighted you could come. I'm certain you will find your stay here most illuminating. Think of me as your unseen host, and believe that during your stay here I shall be with you in spirit. May you find the answer that you seek. It is here, I promise you. And now, auf Wiedersehen.'

AWESOME video. Great Matt reaction shots, I really appreciate the extra editing effort to put those in! Really good editing to show cards you were discussing as the audio was talking about them. Well done!
Great play through! A small quibble: The culprit tokens were used incorrectly at the end. They aren't used to label the psychics' collections. The psychics' collections are labelled with the tokens the ghost uses behind the screen to keep track of which psychic has been given a dream card that hour (the color-coded ones with the small picture of each psychic); flip those over and they're numbered for labelling the collections. The numbered culprit tokens have question marks on the other side. Once the ghost has chosen the murderer, that culprit token is placed question mark side up on the question mark on the clairvoyance track. This commits the ghost to a murderer and prevents them from changing the answer to match the most popular psychics' choice.
It was so funny there seemed to be so much tension and then the couple kissed and I’m like “ohhhhh they’re togetherrrrr...that makes sense LOL”
Yeah, it made me cringe each time she halted the game flow just to isolate Quinn from the group. But so funny afterwards!
He called her Babe at one point in the game. I wasn't sure whether I caught it right, but now I'm pretty sure about it.
Good job filming everything. I have been hoping to find some more board game play-throughs that show both the players and the boards/cards that are in play. Everything else seems to be one or the other, so at the moment the only game in town is TableTop (or flipping cameras on the rare Dice Tower event that supports it). If you can continue with this level of quality, I think you'll find that your popularity grows pretty quickly as there's more demand for this sort of content than TH-cam currently has available.

This was fantastic! Great job. And Matt's expressions! Gold. This doesn't matter really as long as everyone at the table knows, but the rules say knock once for yes, and twice for no and that kept messing with my head having played it that way.
I like it much more this way. You hear one knock and are desperately waiting for another.
Makes more sense than waiting to see whether you're really right.

Great video! We played this once when we first got it but haven't played it since but this has totally renewed our interest!
One suggestion: It would be great to show the card and the player's token when asking the ghost if the guess is correct, possibly a split screen or something? A lot of the fun is looking at the cards and with all the guessing and re-guessing it's sometimes hard to remember exactly which card the player is referring to when asking if they're right.

At 37:40 I believe you should have gotten some clairvoyance points for finishing (I think one point for every remaining round on the clock)
edit: looks like it didn't matter, since you all ended up behind the 3 cards point

Just bought this recently and played it tonight. Really cool game. I would highly recommend.
Couldn't tell if the players that got finished "early" got their bonus clairvoyance or not. If you finish early you get one point for each remaining round. Not sure if it would have helped.
Somewhere, Tim Burton is watching Matt's performance and is planning a Mysterium movie, but with Matt in the Johnny Depp role.
The playthrough with the zoom in on all the cards and stuff is amazing. I am sure it wasn't easy to make though.
Thank you for both this video and the how to play video of this game. I plan to play this game tonight and looking through the rules a few weeks ago i was a bit lost. You all did a wonderful walk through and loved the out fits. Keep the videos going and keep having fun together.
I've been hearing mixed reviews but this just makes it look like a blast
After doing a ton of research and realising that all those other games that people claim replaced Mysterium have lower scores on Board Game Geek I went ahead and bought Mysterium... have not regreted it a bit! So much fun!
Lovely to revisit this video after several years, really makes me want to invite a bunch of non gamers round and show them Mysterium.

Didn't matter here, but you do gain clairvoyance points for reaching the Zone of Correct Guessing, equal to the number of hours you personally had left over.
True. And I just read in the rules that the ghost can give more than one card at once to a psychic. I never really noticed someone doing this, even in another play through that I watched. (Does it make it too easy? Or maybe you rarely ever have more than 1 card that even vaguely resembles what you want.)
He said in the review they made a home-rule for the ghost giving only 1 card at a time.
B Spits sometimes more than 1 card makes it harder. Like if one card seems to suggest one thing, and the other card another

This was an awesome vid guys! Really well done.
If you've never played this game, know this; it is INCREDIBLY difficult to play the ghost. So, just as a matter of well, good manners, please don't say things like "What were you thinking!?" in an exasperated tone, until you tried being the Ghost yourself. After your experience AS the ghost, you'll understand the problems, and never find the need to say things like that, you'll be commiserating instead.
I only play on the ios. What are your policies regarding good manners and AI?

Hmm I hear a lot of people say Deception: Murder in Hong Kong is more fun than this, but I enjoyed watching this be played a lot more than I enjoyed watching people play Deception. I'll probably only ever get a shot to play one, so I'm in dubio...
Mysterium looks like it'll be better enjoyed by people who like abstract, creative games like Dixit

If you knock once for 'yes', you can get better tension by making your double-knocks so sloooow.
the rules actually say 1 knock is Yes and 2 is no. I feel there is just as much tension waiting for that second knock for yes.

Question on the gameplay: can the ghost communicate via timing? ie, handing out dream cards when someone says something, or perhaps handing out cards really, really fast right at the beginning (thus indicating that there is a superficial matching going on, such as primary color?)
You arent supposed to use color as a guide (this was a rule break they made). It will do more harm than good, there are very few primary colors. And since this is a dark (spooky) game, lots of art is dark colors. Anyways, the ghost is not supposed to give any hints, it would make the game waaay too easy. But you can play with house rules (like was played here, they didnt use the 2 minute hourglass timer, and they used color as a clue).

For someone with access to Dixit, would it be somehow possible to adapt Mysterium's rules to Dixit's cards?
I don't think it'd really work. They've done an amazing job with recurring themes and cross-hinting across the card set in Mysterium. It's really worth the money, we've played some two dozen times now and still not sick of it. Also it's very different from all the other games because there's zero math or words.

Me and my friends prefer to choose the killer before. So it will be more hard.
@@pionierul7500 yeah, our house rule is (but not enforced.. its up to the ghost and how good mystics have been doing so far) to discard the 7 cards in hand... pick the killer, then draw new 7 and use those. That way you have to be more creative.
I know matt is playing a ghost but how the heck did you get him to stay quiet and not argue he is a poltergeist?
Do you think you could mix in the dixit cards and it could still be a valid clue? 😂 thinking of the replayability of dixit
We tried this and something about the Dixit cards made them rarely used by the ghost. They ghost was experienced as a ghost though and maybe biased to the standard cards, so I reckon give it a go.

I'm generally happy with abstract and with creative, but I played this game once and it was very frustrating. Sooooo many different ways to interpret the "visions," and it seemed like I was always wrongedy wrong wrong wrong.
The Ghost can pass on as many visions as it wants. Also there are 3 difficulties. If you find the game hard then have ghost pass on multiple visions to each person.

House rule do you guys prefer not to use the 2min sand timmer?
if the crowd is lively and engaged, Id say forget the timer. It may make the game go longer than the quoted '42' min, but if everyone is having fun then why not? But if the crowd is bored, turns are taking forever, then you can use timer to speed things up. In this game a lot is on the ghost, he/she has to make sure there is a constant feed of cards/info to keep mystics engaged and discussing things. Matt did a good job.
So, I'm in the US and my game is at the cabin so I can't check this. Either I read misread the rules or the game changed for us, but the tokens at the end in my game have to do with how many votes you get rather than how many cards you get to see...at least that's how I remember the rules working. Anyone know for sure?
In this version (there are at least three versions with some changes and variances), your position on the track indicates if you get to look at one, two, or all three of the final dream cards. If you can vote more than once, the game would come with additional voting tokens, but I'm not aware of that variation. I have only actually played one of the earlier Polish versions of the game, though.

I thought you could give more than one vision card per person per turn?
yes you can. You can gives as much "vision" cards as you want per round, even gives more than one card to a specific person. They basically ignored a lot of the rules, there's a timer for each round too and didn't even use it...
@@tnykuuh on thing to remember is that you cant give out vision cards in waves. You can give as many as you want at once (which would be max of 7 due to that being your hand as the ghost). But once you give anything to a mystic, you can no longer give anything to that mystic for remainder of that round. So you cant like give 1, then later that same round give another one.

Have to ask, is each dream card ALWAYS associated with a particular character? If so, wouldn't you quickly learn which cards belong to which character after several plays?
No, it is always up for personal interpretation.
Potentially a gaming group that plays the game a lot together could build up a lexicon, but it’s important to remember that the ghost gets random cards, so getting the right cards at the right time can be tricky.
no its a random deck of art cards. no one card is actually associated with any of the things they have to guess. but if you played it a thousand times with the same group certian patterns might emerge

This game works GREAT for teaching English too. It just needs a bit of tweaking though to get the best out of it (especially for keeping those alpha gamers under control). Damn the original set three (murder weapons) sucks big time. The motive cards from one of the expansions are much more interesting and challenging.
Also those last 3 cards for the finale was perfect, I guessed right immediately!
