Guitarist Marc Moreland had a uniquely dissonant style that blended perfectly with the band's dark wave songs. Great band !

I saw Stan's new band right after this in a nightclub... Stunning... I thought better... but after I saw this I think I under-rated this band. The thing is... they cared about the sound... the sound more than they cared about being rock stars... the real thing. And Stan is one of the great song writers. Very smart very funny man with complete artistic integrity... something rare in the commercial world of music. I had a friend who had Stan and his wife over for dinner, said Stan was a motor mouth full of stories... as one would expect. A great story teller. Great brain. Nice man.

    • @waanaabe-4795

The fact that they were underappreciated in a world of vapid pop stars (be it, then, Madonnas or Green Days or "enter name here") underscores their brilliance. Most people go with what "is around". Most music aficionados find pearls where others just see shells, if seeing them at all. The sad thing is that it makes such music hard to find...

Once upon a time, somebody used to book bands at Magic Mountain ( Amusement Park, North of L.A , for those outside of Southern California. )
Wall of Voodoo was booked to play a Halloween show at Magic Mountain, I begged and pleaded with my dad to please take me to this show.
It was a no - go because earlier that year we went to Magic Mountain for its original purpose..
My dad said, " they will play again, their from L.A, you'll see them soon enough."
US Festival comes around, and Dad took my sister and I to heavey metal day because he liked Judas Priest and Scorpions.
Finally, who was booking the shows at Magic Mountain?
Lords of The New Church played there, KING performed there, my dad unofficially photographed The Bangles at the venue, this was when ' All Over The Place ' was released.
Many years later at the Bangles , " Doll Revolution " release party, my sister handed over a bunch of the photos which tripped out the band..
Anyways, if I had access to a time machine, WALL OF VOODOO shows is the first stop.
I would go in reverse order. To be the bongo player that sat in a chair at the US festival , ON STAGE!
And only got up when it was time to play his parts. PLUS!!! If you spy, with your little eye, beer was on stage!

This is what you tube is for. To be able to "time travel " and see again the best band I have ever seen in over 40 years of gig going and over 1000 concerts.
Saw them many times in the 1980's both versions of the band and got to meet them too.
No other band has touched them for brilliance and musical originality. Over 30 years on they still sound fresh and not at all dated.

    W.O.V. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't usually comment when everybody else have already said what I would like to, but, man, in this case I have to add myself to the "fan salad"
what a ridiculous display of raw talent and one of the most unique bands ever. I only saw them twice, definitely not enough
    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!

I have never lost my interest in Wall of Voodoo after hearing Mexican Radio while watching on MTV. Then the song Don't Box Me In which helped to highlight the Frances Ford Coppola 'art film for teenagers' Rumble Fish. The movie and song must have come out after this show. (Don't Box Me In not on playlist). Almost hard to believe this was 41 years ago! Yep I was just 15 when I first heard Stan Ridgeway/Wall of Voodoo.
It still has a unique sound. Hints of Prince and the Revolution; and The Velvet Underground come to mind.
Honestly this is the most I have listened to this band on one sitting. Great video. Feel like I've been treated to a rare great find 😎

The Stan R fronted WOV broke up. But they brought in the excellent Andy Preiboy as a new singer and a new drummer and lasted until 1988 releasing 2 studio albums and a superb live album which featured songs from both WOV era's.
This version of the band were just as good (eg Brilliant) . Moreover, Stan R although a superb lyricist did not compose the band's music. The Moreland Brothers (rip Mark) did this . In fact Mark had the original idea for "Mexican Radio"
. In addition Andy after a nervy start in 1984 became an assured and confident lead singer. Furthermore he also composed and wrote lyrics. My fav WOV track (and I like loads from 1979-88) is "wrong way to Hollywood"- which was Andy's track:
Stan R's contribution to WOV is overrated as much as I love his vocals and lyrics. Note Andy's solo stuff is far more interesting than Stan's far more "downmarket commercia"l stuff. Andy has also written a book and musical. nuff said

    • @keithbate9405
      @keithbate9405 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Jem'isha Bippo "you suck along with all the other garbage you watch on you tube"
Evidently the same garbage you watch as I saw WOV 9 times in the 1980's including both eras of the band
. Best band I have ever seen both incarnations. So join the" garbage club" (LOL)
Thanks for noticing and clearly appreciating my input ! must stick in your crow eh (LMAO)
Wouldn't normally feed a (infantile/abusive ) troll like you but on this occasion I will .
I was also on the guest list for WOV in London (Preiboy era) met all the band and I also met Stan and Joe from the early 80's version. As you say Andy was a nice guy and so were the others, and Marc and Joe (rip)
You are entitled to your opinion re AP era WOV . Many would agree with you but many would not. Moreover, SR was not responsible for that brilliant music he was a great lyric writer and lead singer . But the Moreland Brothers' and Chas wrote the majority of the WOV mark 1 era's music- SR only contributed bits.
Andy contributed music and lyrics to WOV mark 2 (including my fav song "wrong way to Hollywood"
I saw the Andy era WOV 7 times and did not see a smoke machine and I am not keen on those myself generally.
Your comment on "crappy songs" in the Andy era is hilarious because of the point I have made above Wall of voodoo's music Mark 1 and mark 2 was composed largely by the same 3 people. So ergo if the songs were crap in the AP era they must have been crap in the SR era.
I hope you have learned some thing but I doubt it trolls don't learn only crash and burn Sucker. (LMFAO)

Jem'isha Bippo Ah the troll doesn't like it when his argument is undermined and disabled by some one with more knowledge and nous

This is amazing--thanks for sharing this! I can't believe how great they sounded live, and that, shortly after this set, Stan decided to walk away from WOV due to how crazy their success started to make them. Stan is the only harmonica player I've ever enjoyed listening to. The guy's a genius.

The Wall of Voo Doo did two shows at the fabled Atlanta club "688". I was there for both. They were promoting their album "Call of the West" which I consider a rock masterpiece to this very day. If memory serves me, they had their equipment stolen on this gig and had to improvise. The show was simply mesmerizing on both nights. Stan Ridgway was every bit the showman PT Barnum had in mind. Yet it was Marc Moreland's Spanish influenced guitar work that stood out to me. Had the Wall of Voo Doo remained as a band, they could have been one of America's finest. Unfortunately, they broke up a year later. Internal strife and infighting. Ironically, on the 25th anniversary of Call of the Wild, Stan toured supporting the music using NO members left of the original band. I saw that one too at Smith's Olde Bar. Incredible lyrics to this song. The lyrics alone rival anything Zane Grey wrote about the American West. It's hard to believe this show is coming up on 40 yrs now.
