Joe Nanini was such an incredible drummer and percussionist. RIP Joe.

I'll share this story about Joe with you. The Wall of Voo Doo toured the US in '82 to support the release of one of THE best albums I own. CALL OF THE WEST. I lived in Atlanta at the time they hit town. Unfortunately, someone stole their equipment while they were in the city (welcome south brother) and they had to scramble to find enough stuff to play two sets at the legendary Club 688. Which they did. I was so enamored by the first show that me and my gf came back the following night. To this day, I can't say that I've ever seen better shows at that legendary club. They were so novel. Stan was the consummate performer. Animated, energetic and mesmerizing. So was Marc Moreland and Joe Nanini. Chaz Grey had his own personality.
Joe used to borrow his wife's pots and pans in order to develop new sounds. He lived for percussion. When the band finished the album title cut, "Call of the West", in the end Joe would add his voice, "I USED TO BE SOMEBODY. DON' T WALK AWAY FROM ME, GODDAMN YOU. i USED TO BE SOMEBODY." It was so kewl. I still can see and hear him yelling that. Then he'd return to the next song. Moment over.
I loved that band. They should have. .and could have. .been one of America's finest. They had all the elements. But Stan had other ideas and decided to leave. The irony is. . he chose to split a year after the successful debut of Call of the West. Something really blew up inside the band. Joe Nanini left as well. Of course, Stan's career as a solo artist moved on but Joe got tired of the music scene and moved to. . .Atlanta. He and wife got jobs in a factory and actually lived not far from me. They also played trivia in a small bar that I used to frequent. Only I never saw him nor knew that until later. When he passed away, I learned the news from a local radio station. He was 45. Far too young.
I still play CALL of the WEST a lot. It never gets old. Marc Moreland is gone. Joe is gone but their work inside that iconic album will never disappear. Had he lived, Joe Nanini would have ranked among the best.

@@michaelwolf6424 The story from Stan is that drugs are what broke the band up. I never heard him elaborate on it any further.

@@Trainy2 He should know. I knew Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde. .and really good friend of Marc Morelands. I'd question her about the break up but couldn't get a definitive answer. Too bad. That band could have been spectacular had they been able to stay together.

Thanks for posting this. I had the huge pleasure in supporting this incredible band back in 1981 along with XTC on the bill. (San Fran & L.A.)Absolutely blew this London boy away. Became good pals with Marc and Chas especially, Marc stayed with us when in London. Such a fantastic band , sound ,and bunch of guys. Still sounds magnificent. Sadly missed but never forgotten .

The drummer is very unique. I get there’s a drum machine. This is where “percussionist” comes into play. Very nice job.

Joe Nanini "borrowed" his wife's pots and pans. He was the ultimate percussionist, never satisfied with the sounds he created but he should have been . He was brilliant.

This group's instrument setup can be a soundman's worst nightmare. However, that crazy use of delay/reverb on Stanard's voice and Joe's snare is a little bit much.
