    OK, Ross. Herer's my message I should have prob'ly shared a while ago. My story is a little different than yours. I used to play guitar totally by ear, learning with others and from others in blues/jazz workshops. Got some playing in jam sessions and pub gigs under my belt - all of that like 20 years ago. Now after having raised my kids a trifle and getting to grips with the professional path I chose, once again I manage to find half an hour or a full hour to sit with a guitar and crack my fingers bending again.
    And here comes you with this very distinctive kind of serving attitude that shines through all you do here. It's as if you were running to record a video strip to share some idea that you have designed or learned from somebody. Others have already complimented the composition and flow of your videos. What I would like to pinpoint is that your use of "call and response" technique is splendid - it truly guides watchers' attention.
    What I personally love is that you link so many dots from within guitar practice, musicality, music theory, your personal experience growing with a guitar on your lap and kindness towards the listener that you've managed to re-energise old mans' joyful and mindful playing.
    Please accept my sincere gratitude for your work.
    BTW: Your pronunciation is bliss for a non-native speaker educated in high-brow standard English. For me it is like listening to a fresh and insightful manner of phrasing on an instrument ;-)

    Ross is now my favorite electric blues player, because he *gets it*, meaning each of his phrases sounds like it was composed beforehand, it tells a gorgeous little musical story, and both begins and ends in exactly the right place.

    I've recently been re-inspired to break through the intermediate plateau and started scouting TH-cam to supplement my in-person lessons. I've watched hundreds of videos at this point and Ross is really one of maybe two people I aspire to play like. The lessons and explanations are just fantastic and inspiring. The licks are unique and impressive, but not totally out of reach either. Signed up and waiting for the 2.0 course to be released. Thank you for creating all this valuable content Ross!

    Other than the playing, which is great, I like to point out that the format and presentation of the video itself is very good. It's all I want in an instructional video: accessible, clear, structured, bite-sized, the illustration of the concept is good (we can hear it, we can read it, and we can use the video to navigate - the shot helps), and gives enough information to help us develop our own ideas.

    I caught a glimpse of the title 'Robben Ford' as I moved my phone. I had my headphones on as I was working & the vid started playing. I thought hmm that sounds a lot like Ross though I thought it was Robben of course. Then you started your introduction & I realised it was one of your vids. We can't escape our own peculiar styles can we though we do take a lot from each other?

    Great lesson! Now I’m wondering, is there any place in an A blues progression when you could use a whole-half diminished scale starting on A (i.e., A, B, C, D, D#, F, F#, G#)? Maybe going from the I chord to the V chord?

    In this case what's the difference in the usage of the half-whole diminished and the altered scale? I mean there's only a note that misses and the flattened sixth different... Is this sufficient to choose one instead of the other to create some tension?

  • @slimturnpike
    @slimturnpike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is actually only one diminished scale, starting on C, C# or D. The contrast between so-called half-whole vs whole-half merely marks where you start in the scale. But that's the same with any diatonic scale as well, so to me it's an artificial distinction. What he's playing here are fragments of a diminished scale.

    I bought his online Bullet proof theory course a few months ago and trust me, it has to be one of the most well explained, accessible and easy to understand theory courses in the world. The best way to create tension with a string instrument is to put 12 gauge strings on your acoustic guitar for the first time and tune up the G string slowly until it's aaaalmost in tune but then starts creaking. AAAAAAHHH!!!!! *Turns head away from fretboard*

    I’ve just watched 4 diminished scale lessons - 2 by R Ford. All totally confusing. But you are lesson number 5. And you are the first person to explain that the scale is only for the lead up to the 4 chord. The A dim scale doesn’t land on D7. It’s a half step shy. Whew! Clarity. Plus you took the trouble to explain that the only real magic note in the scale is the flat 9. Now I know what to do. Sign me up.

    Totally random observation but I will never understand why 7#9s have always been called the "Hendrix chord" because he was nowhere near the first person to use them. Wes used a D7#9 to resolve the main riff of Four On Six and The Beatles used it in Taxman. Those are just a couple of instances. Maybe they call it that because he used it in such a rock context? Anybody else ever thought of that?

    Thanks for putting soooo much effort into these. A resource like this back in the sixties would have been useful, to say the least. I had "Mel Bay Guitar Method Grades 1-7". It was wretched. Never practiced and sight-read everything (poorly). All the teacher did was puff on Winstons and write the fingerings over the chords. Put me off of playing until I was 17. I'll see myself out.
